Christian headteacher buried in coffin covered in drawings by her pupils

Sue East died at a hospice aged 58 on 19th December last year following a short battle with cancer.

On the day she died, she wrote to students at St Andrew’s Church School in Bath to tell them “she was ‘going to die soon’ and to thank them for their “joy and friendship”.

Quoting a passage from C.S. Lewis’ 1952 novel, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the mother-of-three wrote: “Never forget there is fairy dust to be found in every situation, no matter how difficult.”

Almost 700 pupils, parents, ex-pupils and staff members attended her funeral at Bath Abbey on Thursday.

Mrs East’s coffin was adorned with drawings of fairies, butterflies, love hearts, rainbows and ‘fairy dust’.

Her three children, John, Susannah and Josiah East, all read tributes to their mother, alongside readings from staff members and close friends.

Her daughter Susannah highlighted how her mother’s faith that enabled her to not fear death.

“She said that death is not to be feared, for it is only coming home,” Susannah said.

“She said how even in the most difficult situations, you find fairy dust.”

The diocese of Bath and Wells has also paid tribute to Mrs East.

Open Heaven 19 January 2019 – Our Heavenly Father

Open Heaven 19 January 2019 Saturday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Our Heavenly Father

Topic: Our Heavenly Father (Open Heaven 19 January 2019)

Memorise: “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”- 1 John 3:2

Read: Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV)

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Bible in One Year: Mark 9, Isaiah 16:12-17:14

Open Heaven 19 January 2019 Saturday MESSAGE:

The prayer outlined in today’s Bible text, popularly called “The Lord’s Prayer”, is of great value to us as believers. Through it, our Lord Jesus Christ introduced God to us as our Heavenly Father (Matthew 6:9). In so doing, He used the known to teach us about the unknown. Everyone is familiar with the relationship that exists between a father and his child. Our Lord used this prayer to open our eyes to the nature of relationship that exists between God and us after we become born again. I came to understand this truth when I gave my life to Christ. I therefore began to call my Heavenly Father “Daddy”, because I knew He surpasses all earthly fathers. This same sentiment is present in the writings of John the Beloved. Carefully meditate on what he wrote in 1 John 3:1-2:

1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”

It is indeed amazing to be called children of God. If you are wondering how a mortal being can become a child of the Immortal and Eternal God, I refer you to John 1:11-12, which says:

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

Jesus Christ revealed the secret behind this mystery to Nicodemus in John 3:5-6, where He said:

5…Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

God is Spirit, and once you are born of the Spirit by giving your life to Christ, you become a child of the Spirit and a spiritual being. Having received this endowment, there is an obligation that follows it. 1 John 3:3 tells us what this obligation is:

“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”

Purity makes us resemble our Heavenly Father, and it is a compulsory virtue for us to manifest. The good news is that when you are empowered by God to become His child, He also implants His seed into you to enable you live like Him in this wicked world. The Holy Spirit tells us in 1 John 3:9:

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

A glorious transformation occurs in us when we become born again! Believe in this transformation and determine to exhibit its character by faith.

Open Heaven 19 January 2019 Saturday Action Point:

Outline the transformation that occurs in a life that is born again and weigh yourself against it. Apply your faith to areas where you are not yet manifesting who you really are.

Open Heaven 19 January 2019 Saturday Hymn 9: In Christ Alone

  1. In Christ alone my hope is found,
    He is my light, my strength, my song;
    This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
  2. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied –
    For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.
  3. There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine –
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
  4. No guilt in life, no fear in death,
    This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath.
    Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
    Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

LifeWay Christian Store Announces They Are Closing Several Locations

LifeWay Christian Store Announces They Are Closing Several Locations

Popular Christian book store, LifeWay Christian Store announced Wednesday that would be closing several of its store locations due to a significant decline in sales.

According to the Baptist Press, LifeWay Christian Resources president Thom Rainer sent out an email to all LifeWay employees to announce the disappointing move. He wrote, “We prayed and hoped that our investments in and commitments to the LifeWay stores would prove fruitful. That just has not been the case.”

He continued, “To the contrary, we not only continue to see an erosion in the brick-and-mortar channel, we have seen an accelerated rate of erosion in recent months. It was our hope that greater traffic would result in greater sales, and that with our expense reductions and product cost savings, we would be able to offset sales declines.”

“That hope has not been realized with the declines we have seen since September,” he added.

Rainer went on to note that the company would be shifting its focus away from brick-and-mortar sales and toward online sales.

Rainer wrote, “In simple terms, a strategic shift is required for moving more and more of our resources to a dynamic digital strategy. We will be transitioning many of those resources from our LifeWay stores to digital channels.”

He added, “The good news is that we will be better prepared to meet the future. The challenging…

Charity pleas for refugees after winter storms hit Lebanon

World Vision says storms, snow and flooding have lefts many refugees exposed to the elements in Lebanon.

The charity’s Operations Director for Lebanon, Rami Shamma, says sub-zero temperatures at night time  have increased the suffering of refugees from the conflict in Syria.

“They’re living in severe, hard conditions. You’d only anticipate that such storms and such severe winter weather would lead to casualties.”

World Vision estimate that there are up to 1.5 million refugees living in Lebanon. The country’s population was previously only 4.5 million and so the number of refugees is putting a strain on the country’s resources and infrastructure.

For Rami Shamma it’s the scale of individual human suffering that need to be brought to the world’s attention.

“Imagine a person who has been living in a tent for the past eight years, you would get half a metre of water in your tent.

“You either freeze to death because of the cold weather or you actually have to search for a relocation to another place temporarily.”

World Vision workers are seeking to bring aid to the refugee camps which have been worst hit by the extreme weather. Rami Shamma is appealing to Christians in the UK to pray for the Syrian refugees.

“In the last weeks we have had about 70,000 refugees who were at risk. The people are still in need and there are still people who…

Restaurant Fined $7,000 for Telling Biological Male Not to Use Women’s Restroom

Restaurant Fined $7,000 for Telling Biological Male Not to Use Women’s Restroom

A D.C. restaurant was fined $7,000 by the city this week after it tried to stop a biological male customer who identifies as female from using the women’s restroom.

The restaurant also must post a sign declaring that “all individuals are allowed to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity or expression.”

The controversy started last year, when Charlotte Clymer, a transgender woman who was born male, entered the women’s restaurant at Cuba Libre, a Cuban restaurant in the District of Columbia. An employee followed Clymer into the restroom. A manager even asked for Clymer’s identity.

After being told to leave, Clymer – an activist with the Human Rights Campaign – called police. The D.C. Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination based on gender identity.

The fine is part of a settlement with the office of D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine. A statement by Racine said the restaurant also must hold training for employees.

“The District’s laws reflect one of our residents’ most deeply-held values: that all people should be treated equally,” Racine said. “With this settlement, Cuba Libre is required to maintain policies that will ensure this type of discrimination does not happen again. I want to thank the restaurant’s management and staff for cooperating fully in our investigation and seeking to rectify…

US VP’s wife defends new job at Christian school which bans LGBT employees

Second Lady Karen Pence previously taught art at Immanuel Christian School in northern Virginia for more than a decade while her husband Mike Pence was a member of Congress.

The school requires job applicants to agree that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Applications for employment state: “I understand that the term ‘marriage’ has only one meaning; the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive covenant union as delineated in scripture and that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other and that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity is engaged in outside of marriage between a man and a woman.”

The form adds that: “Moral misconduct which violates the bona fide occupational qualifications for employees includes, but is not limited to, such behaviours as the following: heterosexual activity outside of marriage (e.g., premarital sex, cohabitation, extramarital sex), homosexual or lesbian sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female, sexual harassment, use or viewing of pornographic material or websites, and sexual abuse or improprieties toward minors as defined by Scripture and federal or state law.”

‘Criticism of Christian Education in America Should Stop,’ Vice President Pence Defends His Wife amid Media Backlash

‘Criticism of Christian Education in America Should Stop,’ Vice President Pence Defends His Wife amid Media Backlash

Vice President Mike Pence’s wife was the target of criticism this week after she announced that she would be teaching art at a private conservative Christian school, and the Vice President is stepping up to defend her.

Karen Pence announced this week that she would be teaching art at Immanuel Christian School which requires its applicants to sign a document signifying that they believe marriage is between one man and one woman and that they would not promote “transgender identity.”

After making the announcement, Pence was met with harsh backlash from critics who believe it is inappropriate for the Vice President’s wife to work somewhere that “discriminates against the LGBT community”

Tony Pasanski wrote on Twitter, “She needs to explain why it’s okay to teach in a place that discriminates against the LGBT community, who are Americans that pay taxes.”

The ALCU also criticized the decision tweeting, “This sends a terrible message to students. Do we want to live in a country with…

‘Our country is going through one of the most trying periods in its history’ Zimbabwean bishops raise concern

Badly injured people streamed into a hospital in the capital Harare after alleged assaults by security forces.

“Our country is going through one of the most trying periods in its history,” the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference said in a statement lamenting the government’s “intolerant handling of dissent” and its failure to halt economic collapse.

Media group MISA-Zimbabwe shared a text message from the country’s largest telecom company, Econet, calling the government’s internet order “beyond our reasonable control”.

The High Court will hear a challenge to the shutdown on Monday, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said.

A prominent pastor and activist who faces a possible 20 years in prison on a subversion charge arrived at court, one of more than 600 people arrested this week.

Evan Mawarire (pictured below) has called it “heartbreaking” to see the new government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa acting like that of former leader Robert Mugabe.

Mawarire is accused of inciting civil disobedience online. “It’s a shame what’s happening,” the pastor said.

Mother and Teen Daughters Create Pro-Life Fashion Line Just in Time for March for Life 2019

Mother and Teen Daughters Create Pro-Life Fashion Line Just in Time for March for Life 2019

The 46thannual March for Life kicks off on Friday, January 18, and one mother with her three daughters are showing up in style.

Carla D’Addesi and her teen daughters launched a pro-life fashion line called Culture of Life 1972, in January, CBN News reports.

The line, which contains, leggings, t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, gym bags and more, is meant to serve as a celebration of life for all of the yet to be born children.

D’Addesi told CBN News in an interview that she and her daughters came up with the concept of COL 1972 during a family dinner one day. She said, “We’d really like to get back to a culture of life, the year 1972. 1973 is when our Supreme Court ruled that the tiniest people did not have the right to life.”

D’Addesi said she was motivated to create this line with her daughters because they wanted to spread a message that they could stand behind. She told CBN News, “We are shopping all the time and we felt a little bit marginalized because some of the messaging that was on the shirts just went against our core principles, our core values.” She continued, “We want to support companies that support our core values.”

According to D’Addesi, the clothing line was conceptualized with 10 to 30-year-olds in mind and designed by an experienced designer from L.A. The athleisure brand launched at the start January…

Christian hotel worker fired for refusing to work on Sundays awarded £16.2 million

Marie Jean Pierre sued the Conrad Hotel in Miami, Florida – accusing bosses of breaking discrimination laws by dismissing her when she missed six shifts.

Commenting on her victory at a federal court, the 60-year-old told NBC 6 Miami: “I love God. No work on Sunday, because Sunday I honour God.”

The mother-of-six, who attends the city’s Bethel Baptist Church, claimed she had informed her employer when she was hired in 2006 that she could not work during Sundays.

The court heard how Ms Pierre was forced to swap shifts with colleagues when, in 2015, a manager began ordering her to come in during Sundays anyway to wash dishes.

Despite the efforts of co-workers, she was dismissed on the grounds of misconduct, negligence and “unexcused absences”.

The jury ordered Conrad Hotel, which is owned by Hilton Worldwide, to pay Ms Pierre $21 million in punitive damages, $500,000 for emotional anguish and $36,000 for lost earnings.

Hilton said it was “disappointed” by the verdict and it intended to appeal against it.

A statement said: “We were very disappointed by the jury’s verdict, and don’t believe that it is supported by the facts of this case or the law.

“During Ms Pierre’s ten years with the hotel, multiple concessions were made to accommodate her personal and religious commitments.

“We intend to appeal, and demonstrate that the Conrad Miami was and remains a welcoming place…
