Lessons on Jesus should consider Muslim views, say academics

Showing pupils a range of perspectives on Jesus from different individuals and groups will make religious education more rigorous and encourage pupils to have empathy with others, according to academics.

At a time of year when questions about Jesus’s identity are likely to arise, a new textbook is being launched to encourage more varied teaching.

It supports teachers to move beyond telling the story of the birth, life and work of Jesus and instead highlight the way he is seen by people from varied cultural, religious and academic backgrounds.

This would help students in GCSE and A-level RE lessons to investigate how Jesus is portrayed by assorted individuals and groups – including theologians, historians, feminists, the visually impaired, artists and southern African cultures.

Professor Rob Freathy, who led the team that put the textbook together, said: “There is no single, neutral and objective answer to the question ‘Who is Jesus?’.

“Answers differ depending on who is being asked. RE teaching and assessment that recognises that, by asking pupils to think about subject matter from different perspectives, is intellectually more rigorous and can promote the educational benefits of open-ended inquiry.

“It also best prepares pupils to enter a world characterised by a radical diversity of beliefs, religions and world views.”

The textbook, titled Who is Jesus?, introduces…

Andrew Wommack Devotional 21 December 2018 – Minister The Good News

Topic: Minister The Good News [Andrew Wommack Devotional 21 December 2018]

John 20:21 “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”

The dictionary states that to reconcile means to re-establish friendship between; to settle or resolve, as a dispute. The key to reconciliation is to effectively deal with the enmity, ill will, hatred, or hostility that caused the dispute, etc.

The enmity between man and God was sin. God took the initiative to remove this barrier through the means and agency of Jesus Christ, thus leaving man and God as friends once again.

We have received the ministry of reconciliation. That means we are in the ministry of reconciling people to God. Much of what people call the gospel today is actually alienating man from God. True, we need to show people their need for God to get them to receive His forgiveness and reconciliation, but the angry and bitter attitude some people have when confronting the sinner, is not correct.

Imputing people’s sins unto them was not the way God used Jesus to reconcile the world unto Himself. We should not focus on the problem of sin, but on the answer of God’s grace (Rom. 5:20).

When you read a newspaper, you read about things that have already happened. They are not reporting prophecy. They are reporting the news. So our real job as ministers of reconciliation is to announce the good NEWS, which is an accomplished fact – that sin has already been dealt with through the person of Christ. We should say, “Now we beseech you, be ye reconciled to God. Change your mind and believe the gospel so that you may partake of what has already been done on your behalf.”

Billy Graham Devotional 21 December 2018 – Neglect of Soul

Topic: Neglect of Soul [Billy Graham Devotional 21 December 2018]

“Blessed is the man who reveres God, but the man who doesn’t care is headed for serious trouble.”Proverbs 28:14 (TLB)

All Christians believe in God, but many Christians have little time for God. They are too busy with everyday affairs to be taken up with Bible reading, prayer, and being thoughtful to their fellowmen. Many of them have lost the spirit of a zealous discipleship. If you ask them if they are Christians, they would probably answer, “I think so,” or, “I hope so.” They may go to church at Easter and Christmas and on other special occasions, but otherwise they have little time for God. They have crowded God out of their lives.

The Bible warns against neglect of your soul. It is possible to harden your heart and shrivel your soul, until you lose your appetite for the things of God. This hunger, then, that you should have is a desire to be always right with God. It is a consciousness that all searching for peace of heart, except in Him, is in vain.

Prayer for the day: I hunger today to know more of You, Lord.

Thomas More Society Asks Illinois Supreme Court to Cease Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

Thomas More Society Asks Illinois Supreme Court to Cease Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

Lawyers from the Thomas More Society are requesting that the Illinois Supreme Court block a state law calling for taxpayer funding of abortions for those who receive Medicaid.

The December 17, 2018 filing on on behalf of hundreds of thousands of taxpayers in Illinois, the financing for the law goes against the state  constitution’s balanced budget obligation. In September 2018, a court of appeals supported the adjournment of a lawsuit against the funding for the law, which was formerly known as “House Bill 40.”

Thomas More Society Special Counsel Peter Breen had this to say: “The decisions of the lower courts effectively write our balanced budget requirement out of the Illinois Constitution. We’re asking the Illinois Supreme Court to interpret and enforce the constitution and protect taxpayers against future unbalanced budget spending, including the unfunded spending for elective abortions required by House Bill 40.”

Breen noted that, although House Bill 40 was authentic in its legislation, funding was not given validly, and its effective date was determined in a way that was incorrect. The petition claims numerous problems with the new law, including that House Bill 40:

  • Lacks legal funding, as the General Assembly has not yet made the approximate calculation of usable revenues to finance the abortions, as needed by the Illinois…

Syrian priest warns Donald Trump’s troop withdrawal risks ‘chaos’

Fr Nadim Nassar, the first Syrian to be ordained as a priest in the Church of England, fears the decision could spark a fresh power struggle in the region.

He told Premier any effort to de-escalate conflict in Syria was welcome, adding: “They shouldn’t be there in the first place, anyway; they should have left Syrians to decide the future of Syria.

“But they decided to march in… instead of helping the Syrians to find a solution for their own conflict.”

The US President said on Wednesday that Islamic State had been defeated in Syria, suggesting his administration was preparing to send 2,000 American troops currently there home.

Among those criticising the claim was the British defence minister Tobias Ellwood, who tweeted: “I strongly disagree.

“It has morphed into other forms of extremism and the threat is very much alive.”

Fr Nadim said a decision by the US to withdraw without securing strong support for in-country allies would mark a highly unusually step by Washington.

He voiced concern such a move could prompt neighbouring powers including Iran, Russia and Turkey to embark on fresh efforts to assert greater influence in Syria, unleashing further “chaos”.

China Tells Police: Arrest Christians or Get Fired

China Tells Police: Arrest Christians or Get Fired

Chinese authorities are setting quotas on the number of Christians that must be arrested and are threatening police officers with dismissal if they don’t meet the minimum standards, according to a magazine that monitors religious freedom in the country.

The magazine, Bitter Winter, reported that the National Security Bureau in Liaoning’s Dalian city sets the standards, which are based on a “100-point evaluation system.” Bitter Winter interviewed a police officer from the city.

“If the assigned quarterly arrest quotas are not met, the station chief faces losing his job,” Bitter Winter reported. “To fulfill the quotas, police stations distributed a list of previously arrested believers to local communities and building managers to keep an eye on such persons and report to the police if they notice suspicious activities.”

All faiths are targeted. That includes Falun Gong, a meditation-based religion.

The arrest of a local Christian church leader is worth 10 points on the 100-point scale, according to Bitter Winter. Police stations often “buy” lists of previously arrested Christians from other police stations.

“Police officers have been ordered to arrest any believer who has in possession three or more religious books and transfer such persons to the National Security Brigade for interrogation,” Bitter Winter reported.

The police officer told Bitter…

Christian MP convicted for perverting course of justice likens herself to convicted biblical characters

She said: “I am in good biblical company along with Joseph, Moses, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends who were each found guilty by the courts of their day.”

Onasanya was found guilty at the Old Bailey of not only driving above the speed limit in July 2017 but also denying that it was her driving. She is yet to be sentenced but has been suspended from the Labour Party and urged to quit.

The Times report that in a Whatsapp message to other Labour MPs she wrote: “As many of you are already aware, due to widespread media coverage, I was found guilty of perverting the course of justice. Although I vigorously maintained my innocence, the jury has decided that I am guilty.

“I campaigned for justice and for the interests of ordinary people throughout my entire working life to date, but it is this which has made both national and international press. The first jury was dismissed having failed to reach a decision last month but the second jury reached their conclusion within days.

“Regardless of what you believe or suspect, the fact remains that I Fiona, sought to be the choice and voice of change, but this may now take a different path. More than ever before I am asking that you commit time in prayer for my family.”

She added that she does not feel isolated in her position: “In times like these the natural inclination of believers is to ask God why? I personally do not,…

Cross Salvaged from Church that Burned; ‘God Is Very Powerful’

Cross Salvaged from Church that Burned; ‘God Is Very Powerful’

A cross saved from a church destroyed by fire is a reminder of God’s power, a member of the congregation says.

Siloam United Methodist Church near Denton, N.C., caught fire Tuesday and burned to the ground, but not before firefighters were able to salvage a brass cross from the altar.

The congregation was formed in the 1830s.

“God is very powerful and he saves his symbol to show that anything is possible, even through the fires,” Rachel Davis, daughter of Siloam United Methodist Church pastor Scott Davis, told WGHP.

The pastor said the congregation will continue to meet.

“We are devastated at the loss of our building where we have worshiped. Siloam United Methodist Church is more than a building, though. It is a body of believers,” Davis told The Courier-Tribune. “Our congregation will continue through this with God’s help. Our trust and our hope remains in Jesus Christ, our Lord.”

The cause of the fire is not known.

“Our congregation began as a Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1833,” the pastor said. “They worshipped in a log structure on this ground. The founding families have many descendants who still worship here today.”

Nigerian Bishop kidnapped by unknown gunmen

The Synod Secretary of the Diocese confirmed the incident to local media and described the event as “shocking”.

The kidnappers broke into the bishop’s residence around 7pm on Tuesday.

The Secretary General of the Anglican Communion, Dr Josiah Idowu-Fearon, said that he was “distraught” to hear about the kidnapping.

He added: “This is absolutely terrible news. My heart goes out to his wife Edna, the rest of his family and everyone in his diocese.

“I would urge the whole Anglican Communion to join me in praying for his safe release.”

While no suspects have been named, the state’s 2019 governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Tonye Cole, linked the abduction to the bishop’s relationship with himself.

A statement released by Cole’s campaign organisation stated: “The gentle and respectable priest, whose whereabouts are still unknown, was the clergyman who received and prayed with Cole when he visited the area.

“Since the APC flag bearer’s visit, the priest has received threats from persons at large.

“We are disturbed that kidnapping has degenerated so low that a man of God who has dedicated his life to the service of mankind can be so brutally assaulted by thugs acting on the orders of their godfathers.”

Deputy Superintendent Nnamdi Omoni of Rivers State Police said an investigation is ongoing.

Man Falsely Convicted of Murder Is Set Free after 27 Years, Says, ‘I Just Kept Believing in God’

Man Falsely Convicted of Murder Is Set Free after 27 Years, Says, ‘I Just Kept Believing in God’

For years a Baltimore man was behind bars for a murder he didn’t commit, but now, 27 years later, Clarence Shipley has been released.

According to Faithwire, Shipley was arrested in 1992 and convicted of first-degree murder. The site reports that the Baltimore man heard that police were looking for him and decided to turn himself in. Even so, Shipley maintained his innocence, claiming that police had arrested the wrong man.

It wasn’t until this year that Shipley’s claim was investigated. Faithwire reports that Shipley’s family hired a former detective to look into his case. This led the Baltimore native’s case to land on a desk at the Baltimore Innocence Project Clinic. According to the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, police never looked into Shipley’s alibi and there were several inconsistencies in Shipley’s conviction. Reportedly, a witness testified that whoever committed the 1991 murder of Kevin Smith was right-handed, Shipley, however, is left-handed. Between the inconsistencies and the lack of solid police work, Shipley was set free.

The Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby made a statement apologizing to Shipley on behalf of the state. She said, “When a man, who is an innocent man, spent 27 years of the prime of his life behind bars, so on behalf of the criminal justice system, as a representative of the…
