Bible college reinvents ‘incorrect’ Christmas carols

The Moorlands College version of ‘We Three Kings of Orient Are’ points out that the gospels do not number the magi who visited baby Jesus, while Bethlehem’s landlocked setting means vessels could not have sailed there as the song ‘I Saw Three Ships On Christmas Day’ suggests.

During a tongue-in-cheek introduction to the musical compilation, Principal Dr Steve Brady said: “You will be corrected and immunised against the nonsense that so often flows around at this period in the year…”

The video asserts that Jesus was “probably” born during autumn, contrary to what the popular carol ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ suggests – and no one can be sure the cows mentioned in ‘Away in a Manger’ were definitely “lowing”.

In answer to Eric Boswell’s popular ‘Little Donkey’, staff break out into song when they point out “there’s no donkey, there’s no donkey in either Matthew or Luke”.

Meanwhile, lyrics to “O Little Town of Bethlehem” would have been more fitting in they had described the settlement as “O mid-sized town of Bethlehem.”

The video was produced…

Explorer: Ark of the Covenant May Have Been Found

Explorer: Ark of the Covenant May Have Been Found

The head of an exploration institute that searches the world for biblical relics says the Ark of the Covenant and the Ten Commandment tablets may be resting in a church in Ethiopia.

Bob Cornuke, president of the Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (BASE) Institute, wrote in a blog post that a recent investigation led him to Ethiopia, where tradition says the Ark of the Covenant — and the Ten Commandments that it housed — were taken following events described in the Old Testament.

The Ark allegedly is housed at St. Mary’s of Zion Church in Axum, Ethiopia, where a “Guardian of the Ark” spends his entire life protecting it. No one else is allowed to see it.

“This man, reportedly, lives his entire life inside a fenced-off area surrounding St. Mary’s of Zion,” Cornuke wrote in the blog. “He will not leave this fenced-off compound until he dies — when he will be replaced by the next Guardian of the Ark. In the chapel of the church, 30 robes from 30 previous guardians are on display — and every one of those 30 professed that the object they protected was the true Ark of the Covenant.”

Cornuke isn’t the first person to investigate the church’s claims. Smithsonian Magazine conducted its own investigation more than a decade ago. But Cornuke’s newest blog has been quoted in newspapers and websites worldwide.

The Ark was the subject of the…

Pope Francis Says Their Is “No Room” for Homosexuality in Priesthood

Pope Francis Says Their Is “No Room” for Homosexuality in Priesthood

Pope Francis told Father Fernando Prado during an interview for his book The Strength of Vocation, that homosexuality among clergy is a “serious matter” that “worries” him.

According to the BBC, the pope labeled homosexuality a fad and called it “fashionable.” Francis also urged members of the clergy to maintain and practice their vow of celibacy.

In excerpts of the interview published by Corriere della Sera, Saturday, the pontiff said that the Church must be “demanding” during the selection process for priesthood candidates.

He said, “The question of homosexuality is a very serious one” and those whose responsibility it is to train priests, he continued, have to make sure the candidates are “humanly and emotionally mature” before they are ordained.

He continued, “For this reason, the Church urges that persons with this rooted tendency not be accepted into ministry or consecrated life.”

The BBC reports that this principle also applies to women who want to be nuns.

Francis said, “In our societies, it even seems homosexuality is fashionable. And this mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the Church.”

Francis stressed, however, that there is “no room for this” in the lives of priests and nuns.

This is not to say that Francis is completely against homosexuality.

In 2013, the head of the Catholic Church noted that…

Home Secretary responds to questions about Asia Bibi

During questions on Monday in the House of Commons to the Home Secretary, Mike Kane Labour MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East asked if the Pakistani Christian mother-of-five cleared of blasphemy would be offered sanctuary in the UK.

Sajid Javid replied: “Our primary concern is for the safety and security of Asia Bibi and her family, and we welcome a swift resolution to the situation.

“A number of countries are in discussions about providing a safe destination once the legal process is complete, and it would not be right for me to comment further at this stage.”

His words echoed what the Prime Minister  said last week when put under pressure in the Commons to “put the record straight” and explain why the UK hasn’t offered Asia Bibi and her family asylum.

The Catholic Church in England and Wales, and the Catholic Church in Scotland have both said they would contribute to secure Asia Bibi’s safety.

Mr Kane – who chairs the Catholic Legislators Network, was able to secure a meeting with the Home Secretary to discuss the offer.

“It is not appropriate for me to talk about a particular case, especially if there is a risk that it might put the individual or their family in some kind of further risk, but I assure him that my first concern is the safety of Asia and her family,” Mr Javid explained.

“We are working with a number of…

Tyson Fury’s prayer moments before heavyweight title clash

The British fighter, who regularly speaks of his Christian faith, got up from two knockdowns to score a draw with American Deontay Wilder, with most viewers claiming he should have been awarded the victory.

The fight capped a remarkable comeback from Fury who gave up his world titles after a battle with drugs and mental health issues.

In his time away from the ring, it’s reported he ballooned to 28 stone.

An underdog going into the fight with big hitter Deontay Wilder, Fury rose from the canvas after being floored in the final round – a move which was described as “miraculous” by journalists.

Speaking after the fight, Fury said: “I don’t know how I got up…I had a holy hand upon me.”

His trainer Ben Davison also claimed it was “the man upstairs” who helped him up.

In the aftermath of the fight, a behind the scenes video showing Fury in a huddle with his team moments before entering the ring at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was released by YouTube boxing channel IFL TV.

He’s seen praying: “In the mighty name of Jesus, give me strength and power tonight, Lord.

“Let both men come out of the ring very well and go back to their families safe.

“As I walk through the shadow of death I will fear no evil. Amen.”

Fury then hands over to a Muslim member of his team who prays in Arabic and asks Allah to ‘give us the victory’.

Fury ends the huddle shouting ‘Let’s go to…

Religious Leaders Recall George H.W. Bush’s Priorities: Friendship, Faith, Family

Religious Leaders Recall George H.W. Bush’s Priorities: Friendship, Faith, Family

WASHINGTON (RNS) — As the nation learned of the death of former President George H.W. Bush, religious leaders from across the country reacted with statements recalling his leadership, his dedication to his family and his embrace of civility.

Bush, a longtime Episcopalian, died Friday (Nov. 30) at the age of 94.

Here is a sampling of the reaction:

James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and the James Dobson Family Institute

“I knew him as one of the most kind and generous men I have known. I met him when he was vice president under President Ronald Reagan. Bush invited me to his office in the Eisenhower Building, May 1988. One month later, my mother died suddenly. Despite our casual acquaintance, the vice president took the time to write me a personal letter of consolation at our loss. … I became only one of millions of others around the world who considered President Bush to be their friend.”

The Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference

“In a time where Washington can seem more fractured and divisive than ever, President Bush’s life serves as a powerful reminder that we can indeed come together, regardless of our differences, for the common good of all Americans. He was that rare politician who possessed such integrity, honor and good humor that he was embraced and respected by…

Man tries to rescue Christmas decoration

A veteran named Alfred Norwood, Jr. was walking past a home in Austin, Texas, when he saw a man dangling from a second-story roof. He immediately stopped to help, trying unsuccessfully to use a ladder that was leaning against the home. He then called to people who were passing by, but no one stopped to help. So he called 911.

It turned out, the “man” in danger was a mannequin meant to look like Clark Griswold in the movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. It’s so realistic that it’s easy to see how Mr. Norwood was fooled.

The homeowners tracked the veteran down and thanked him. One pointed out that hundreds of cars go past their house every day, but he was the only person to stop and help. A reporter commented: “It’s nice to know there are still good people in this world who care.”

Let’s consider Mr. Norwood’s experience as a parable for our day.

Services for a war hero

President George H. W. Bush’s body is lying in state today in the US Capitol. It will remain there until tomorrow morning, when it will be taken to Washington National Cathedral for a state funeral. Tomorrow afternoon, the body will be transported to President Bush’s church in Houston for a service Thursday morning, followed by burial that afternoon.

His services are being conducted as a military operation befitting a war hero. They involve military units coordinating movements in at least three states and the District of Columbia.

The procedures are detailed in a 133-page manual titled “State, Official and Special Military Funerals.” As many as four thousand military and Defense Department civilian personnel will be involved in some capacity.

Mr. Bush was prepared to die. He knew that life is uncertain and death is coming for us all (unless Jesus returns first).

Good Samaritan stabbed to death

Unlike the former president, our culture does all it can to avoid the subject of mortality.

Like those who passed by the mannequin in Austin, we drive by…
