Church of England rejects gravestone as ‘over-sentimentalised’

A couple, Natasha and Benjamin Bibby made the request for a blue granite gravestone in memory of their son, Kai-Jay at St Saviours in Ringley.

But the Chancellor of Manchester, Geoffrey Tattersall QC applied strict church rules in rejecting the design.

He said: “The stars, heart, hand and footprints would over-sentimentalise the memorial in a way which is undesirable and unnecessary.”

Mrs Bibby said she saw the the heart-shaped stone as a “symbol of love”.

Premier has contacted the Diocese of Manchester for a full statement.

21,000 Knitted poppies donated for church tower cascade

People from around the world crafted the handmade poppieswhich adorn St Peter’s Church in Sudbury, Suffolk and the nearby town hall.

Teresa Elford, of Sudbury Town Council, said the cascade over the 90ft church tower is more than 100ft long, including a section draped over the ground at the bottom.

More than 23,000 poppies were contributed, with more than 21,000 on the church tower and the rest placed on the front of the town hall, she said.

Some of the poppies are purple rather than red, in memory of animals who died during the war.

Ms Elford said people had wanted to do something special to mark the centenary of Armistice Day and their idea was inspired by a previous knitted poppy display in Walsham-le-Willows, 28 miles away.

“Our initial target was 5,500 poppies and we were just going to do something on the town hall.

“We smashed our target within weeks – they just came in floods.”

She said poppies arrived in the post from as far afield as Australia and Denmark as word of their project spread on Facebook, and a weekly volunteer group was set up in the town hall to attach the poppies to the netting with cable ties.

The cargo net for the church tower display was donated by RAF Honington and firefighters hung it in place last week.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “Every time…

Ten Goofy Criticisms of Pastors

Podcast Episode #480

SUBSCRIBE:
iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio • Spotify

We asked our members at Church Answers for the wildest criticisms they had ever received. The answers did not disappoint.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • I still remember criticisms from 25 years ago. They stick with a pastor.
  • Often times, criticisms of a pastor have less to do with what a pastor does and more to do with not doing things that a previous pastor did.
  • Many lay people don’t know that their pastor is criticized like this.

The 10 goofy criticisms we discuss are:

  1. “You should not wear a pink shirt to the pulpit.”
  2. “Pastors are not allowed to use hand-held mics.”
  3. “You can not preach with power unless you wear a flag lapel pin.”
  4. “There are too many new Christians in our church.”
  5. “You don’t trust God since you go to board meetings.”
  6. “The Holy Spirit cannot use you if you plan your sermons ahead of time.”
  7. “You are lazy since we sang consecutive hymns from the hymnal.”
  8. “A pastor should not have a dog as pet.”
  9. “Your wife should work no more than 15 hours a week outside the home.”
  10. “Your wife should not be pregnant.”

Churches Defend Asylum Seekers as Trump Sends 5,200 Troops Against Immigrant Caravan ‘Invasion’

(Screenshot: YouTube/AP Archive)Thousands of migrants set out before dawn on October 24, 2018 from the far-southern Mexico city of Huixtla toward the U.S.

Churches in America have defended asylum seekers and opposed military action at the U.S.-Mexico border, as President Donald Trump sent in 5,200 extra troops against the migrant caravan.

Various Roman Catholic charity groups, including Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA, spoke out in an official statement issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops calling for humane action toward the asylum seekers, many of whom are coming from Honduras.

“While nations have the right to protect their borders, this right comes with responsibilities: governments must enforce laws proportionately, treat all people humanely, and provide due process,” the charities declared.

“We affirm that seeking asylum is not a crime. We urge all governments to abide by international law and existing domestic laws that protect those seeking safe haven and ensure that all those who are returned to their home country are protected and repatriated safely,” they added.

“Furthermore, we strongly advocate for continued U.S. investments to address the underlying causes of violence and lack of opportunity in Central America. Our presence…

Justin Welby hits the town for Halloween themed club night

Most Rev Justin Welby visited the Tap n Tin Nightclub in Chatham, Kent, to join a new chaplaincy group and mix with guests to see how developing pastoral outreach works.

Commenting on the evening, Archbishop Justin tweeted: “I’m about 100 years too old for nightclubs but it was so encouraging to visit @tapntinchatham and see the chaplaincy team in action – they provide vital care and support for those who find themselves vulnerable on a night out.”

Archbishop Justin is on a two-day visit to the Diocese of Rochester.

Holocaust survivor escaped death in Pittsburgh

Judah Samet was rescued from Germany’s Bergen-Belsen concentration camp seventy years ago. He survived Saturday’s attack on his synagogue in Pittsburgh because he was running late.

Born in Hungary, Samet was six years old when his family of six was put on a train to Auschwitz. The route was blocked, so their train was eventually redirected to Bergen-Belsen.

An estimated fifty thousand people died in this camp, including Anne Frank. Samet’s family was eventually put aboard a train intended for another concentration camp, but they were liberated by American troops before reaching their destination.

Samet eventually made his way to Pittsburgh, where he owns a jewelry shop. Last Saturday, he was talking to his housekeeper and was four minutes late to Shabbat services. He entered the parking lot and was pulling into a handicapped spot when gunfire erupted. He was in the line of fire but wasn’t hit.

Two beloved brothers will be buried together

David and Cecil Rosenthal were not as fortunate.

The brothers had Fragile X syndrome, a genetic disorder that often results in mild to moderate intellectual challenges. The two were developmentally disabled and lived together.

Cecil loved to greet people at the door of the synagogue before services. A friend called his laugh “infectious.” He added that “David was so kind and had such a gentle spirit.” They were two of eleven killed at their synagogue last Saturday. Their funerals are today.

The Pittsburgh shooting is unfortunately not the only tragedy in today’s news.

A student was shot dead yesterday at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina. Indonesian officials are searching for clues after a jetliner crashed into the Java Sea yesterday, likely killing all 189 passengers and crew. Seven people were shot and wounded early yesterday morning during a Halloween party at a Southern California nightclub.

But I want to focus this morning on the synagogue shooting for three important…

Joyce Meyer Devotional 30 October 2018 — Love Does Something

Topic: Love Does Something [Joyce Meyer Devotional 30 October 2018]

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:7

Our ministry has taken various people on mission trips to minister to desperately needy people, but they don’t all respond the same way. Everyone feels compassion, but some individuals become quite determined to find ways to make a difference.

Indifference makes an excuse, but love finds a way. Everyone can do something!

I remember a woman who decided she had to help in some way. For a while she couldn’t figure out what to do because she had no extra money to contribute and she couldn’t go live on the mission field.

But as she continued to pray about the situation, God encouraged her to look at what she had, not at what she did not have. She realized she was very good at baking cakes, pies and cookies.

So, she asked her pastor if she could bake during the week, and offer her baked goods for sale on Sundays after church as long as the money went to missions. This became a way for her and other church members to be involved in missions, and it kept her active doing something to help someone else.

Another woman is a massage therapist, and she organized a special spa day and donated all the proceeds to help poor people. She raised one—thousand dollars for missions and also testified that the day of giving was life changing for her, those who worked with her, and those who attended.

We all need to be loved, but I believe our personal joy is strongly connected to loving others. Something beautiful happens in our hearts when we give.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to not only feel compassion, but to find creative ways to express my love for others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

MFM Daily Devotional 30 October 2018 – Killing Spiritual Robbers

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 30 October 2018 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – Killing Spiritual Robbers

TOPIC: Killing Spiritual Robbers (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 30 October 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 10:7-13

MEMORY VERSE: “Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:Psalms 144:1

The MESSAGE:

The three major ministries of the devil are to steal, to kill, and to destroy. But Jesus came not only to destroy the works of the devil but also to give us life in a measure that is more than enough. The one who steals is a robber, anyone who destroys is a destroyer and the one who kills is a killer. On the contrary, Jesus’ ministry is to stop the activities of the devil and his demons before they carry out their assignment, and recover whatever they may have stolen, destroyed or killed in our time of ignorance. The devil is not omnipresent. That is, he cannot be everywhere at the same time. But he has to his side, one-third of the angels who fell with him. They operate every second, every minute, every hour, every day, every week, every month and every year. They operate at the beginning of every good (new) thing in life. They are everywhere, homes, offices, markets, streets, schools, and churches and even in our dreams.

A young man once opened a new business in a location where there were many competitors. The welcome reception they gave him was to place, at night, a bottle which contained a big toad at the entrance of his business centre. This was a big signal that the devil was interested in the new business. It was acidic prayer of recovery that bailed him out. At the beginning of any new thing, you need to confront, attack, destroy and oppose the devil and his demons before they carry out their evil assignment. Therefore, you need to learn how to submit all your new ventures and endeavours to God and jealously guard them with prayers. Pray every day to protect your blessings, to stop the enemy from hijacking it. If you have lost them before now, it is time for restoration. God bless you.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
PRAY EVERY DAY TO PROTECT YOUR BLESSINGS AND TO STOP THE ENEMY FROM HIJACKING IT.

PROPHETIC WORD:
Every satanic robber attacking your blessings shall die by fire.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Lord Jesus, I thank You for giving me abundant life that destroys the works of the devil, in Jesus’ name.
2. Spiritual robbers, I arrest you, I bind you and I recover all, in Jesus’ name.
3. Activities of spiritual robber in my life are terminated by fire, in Jesus’ name.

EVENING
4. Every physical and spiritual robbers hunting for my blessings this year, become deaf and blind, in Jesus’ name.
5. Wasters and hijackers of prosperities, you have done enough, die, in Jesus’ name.
6. Hidden and clever devourers and destroyers waiting for today and for opportunity to operate in my life this year, die, in Jesus’ name.
7. As I go out today, the riches of the Gentiles shall locate me by fire, in Jesus’ name.

Teens Open Heavens 30 October 2018 – Destination of Sin

Topic: Destination of Sin [Teens Open Heavens 30 October 2018]

Memorise: But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Revelation 21:8

Read: Romans 6:21-23 (KJV)

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 27-28, 2 Timothy 4

MESSAGE:

This season, all will be well with you if you allow the Lord Jesus Christ to take charge of your life and every situation. You cannot expect all to be well with you if God is not completely involved in every area of your life. Our assurance that all will be well is also hinged on the fact that the Lord deals with problems right from their roots.

According to Romans 6:23, the immediate or remote destination of any act of sin is death. A thief who is caught stealing may be shot dead. A fornicator who sleeps with a person who is not his/her spouse may contact the AIDS virus which can lead to death. What of anger, malice and bitterness? If you take stock of those who die prematurely, you will be shocked to know many people are victims of these sins. So when God says you should keep away from sin, He is only making a clarion call to life; he wants you to live, you must deal with the problem of sin in your life. Any sin that is present in your life is simply leading you to hell. Break away from it today!

Prayer Point: Lord Jesus, let sin no longer reign over my spirit, soul or body, please terminate sin’s death mission in my life.

Hymn 7:

1. I am Thine 0 Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Divine Prescription for Serving God Acceptably By Pastor W.F Kumuyi

DEEPER CHRISTIAN LIFE MINISTRY
END OF THE MONTH SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICE NATIONAL GS MESSAGE BROADCAST OCTOBER 2018 EDITION (NCSWS) SUNDAY, 28TH OCTOBER, 2018
TOPIC: DIVINE PRESCRIPTION FOR SERVING GOD ACCEPTABLY
TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 13:1-4; 7-10
MINISTER: PASTOR W.F KUMUYI (BROADCAST MESSAGE FROM GBAGADA, LAGOS HQ)

Topic: Divine Prescription for Serving God Acceptably

Looking at the Scriptures today, we need to understand how important the ark of God was to the children of Israel. It depicted the presence of God, showed them the way to go, it divided the Red Sea, gave them peace and rest of mind. When they were to go to battles, when the walls of Jericho was to be pulled down, the ark was there with them. When the ark was in the midst of the children of Israel, blessings came to them and peace from the presence of God, hence, they carried the ark wherever they went.

God had ordained and commanded how the ark was to be carried: by the levites on poles resting on their shoulders, in fact, they were not to touch the ark with their hands. But at that time, when they were to move the ark back to its place, they completely forgot about all these important details.

We must know that TIME does not CHANGE the WORDS and COMMANDS of God.

We must check out our foundation: the foundation of our Christian life, journey and service to God. If it is wrong at the foundation, nothing good can eventually come out of it.

Uzza might mean well, but God called his action a sin. To others, his action was a misdeed, a mistake, but to God, it was simply a sin. It is not the will or plan of God for sinners to die, but as for Uzza who died under the anger of God, it was the judgment of God that came to him. We must ensure we are very careful not to flout God’s directives, because whatever He calls sin is sin.

The children of Israel should have known earlier the truth they found out later in Scriptures. 1 Chronicles 15:11-15. David instructed the levites to sanctify and make themselves ready to bear the ark. In doing anything for God, we must sanctify ourselves. Doing something good in the wrong way is as good as bad. Even in doing the right thing, we must not relegate God’s word to the background, the levites eventually carried the ark the way they ought to have carried it in the first place.

The things of God must be done God’s way, not in our own way. Action without appropriate submission to God’s word is not acceptable.

Romans 15:4 Everything written in the scriptures, both in the old and new testaments are for our learning and admonition. God intentionally recorded these incidences for us so, that we can learn from the errors and virtues of the sages of old.

Isaiah 55:8. We must always pray for grace to follow the way, will and prescription of God in our lives, families, places of work and in the church. God has nothing to do with the new ways that just came up, the new and so-called better ways of doing things. His way is His way, and He expects His children to always fall in line with whatever He wants.

Hebrew 12:28-29. God in the New Testament is not weak or indulgent, He will not overlook any act of sinfulness. He is a consuming fire. We cannot serve Him the way we want. His desires, purposes are what matter to Him, and they must matter to us as well.

1. THE DANGER OF UNACCEPTABLE CONSULTATIONS WITHOUT SCRIPTURES

1 Chronicles 13:1
David had good intentions, he knew the importance and value of the ark but he did not consult the word of God before embarking on bringing it back. Rather he consulted with all the leaders and the people.

Some people bring suggestions and counsels which they want to be accepted and used immediately, not bothering to know whether such counsel is profitable for the church of God at that particular time.

All the congregation decided and agreed on bringing back the ark, but no one remembered to consult the word of God on how it should be done. A thousands or millions of people cannot stand up to God. He is God, His will matters most. So, it is crucial to always seek His face before we take any step.

Numbers 4:15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.

As seen in this text, only the levites were permitted to carry the ark. II Samuel 6:6-7. Uzza stretched his hand to steady the ark, against God’s instruction, and God killed him. We must not take God for granted, our God is a consuming fire.

David usually asked for God’s mind on every issue, on whatever he wanted to do, so why not now? I Chronicles 12:32. It was because of the children of Issachar, who were men of understanding, whom their brethren listened to, they were the ones who counseled David. They were the ones he listened to. Hence, the word of a God was swept under the carpet.

Deuteronomy 12:8, 28, 32. We must not always do things which are right in our sight, but to do all things according to the will and purpose of God. We must not elevate the plan and purpose of man above that of God. How do we take decisions, make progress, or know what to do? By resorting to the word of God.

Proverbs 16:25
There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Ch 19:2 That leaders, counselors, advisers be without knowledge is not good. Hasting to take decisions leads to error and sometimes death. Uzza died for lack of knowledge. Hosea 4:6. Many people perish for lack of knowledge. . .

Some people know how to talk and manage things well, but lack the knowledge of the word of God, and they always want their counsels to be taken urgently. Not so. The word of God must first be consulted for proper guidance and direction.

Romans 10:2, 27; Hebrews 2:1; 10:26-31.

Sinning willfully after our knowledge of the word of God attracts the wrath and judgment of God. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Anyone who finds it difficult to abide in the will of God is not born again, otherwise, it should be an easy thing to do. Such a one must seek salvation first.

ch 12:25. David had consultations with all the people, but jettisoned the aspect of God. But he realized this error and sought to make amends immediately.

2. THE DEMANDS OF UNWAVERING CONSECRATION WITH SANCTIFICATION

1 Chronicles 15:11-15.

David now called the right people, the levites, and told them to sanctify and make themselves ready to carry the ark of God. He wanted everything this time to be done properly. There must be salvation first before we seek to serve God. The levites did exactly what David told them to do. Church leaders must be careful the way they put people in position of God’s work.

1 Chronicles 15:15
And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.

Leviticus 20:7-8, It is wrong and ungodly to do the work of God without sanctification.

We must learn the technique, acquire knowledge of all that we need to do for God from institutions of learning outside there in the world, we then come into God’s sanctuary and apply these knowledge in holiness and sanctification, we do not come into God’s work in the ways and manner of the world.

2 Corinthians 7:1. We must perfect holiness in the fear of God. II Timothy 2:19. The Lord knows those who are His.

Also Read: Attaining Intimacy in Marriage (Part 3) By Pastor Faith Oyedepo

In the case of Uzza, God felt dishonoured, neglected, pushed aside. Whatever we do for God, we must do for God’s glory. Also, we must ensure that in our service to God, we keep ourselves holy, we must avoid immorality and flee the lust of the flesh, especially in the relationships between members of the opposite sex who work together in the sanctuary of God. There must not be room for uncleanness of any form for our services to be accepted. I Peter 1:14-16.

Ephesians 5:25-27; I Thess 5:22. In our consultations, administration, the word of God must be at the centre, we must flee every appearance of evil.

There is nothing as important as our salvation to get us to heaven. Before preaching, teaching, singing, etc. there must be salvation.

God demands:
– Salvation before Service
– Sanctification before ministry. Matthew 15:13-14
– Sanctification before Soul-winning
– Sanctification before Seeking the Lord
– Sanctification before Sacrifice
– Sanctification before giving our Substance

Mark 8:36-37. What shall it profit anyone if he gets the ovation, clapping and approval of men after rendering service to God, and he loses his soul eventually? The approval of God matters most, much more than the praise of men.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3; Proverbs 21:27. The service, good deeds and works of sinners is abomination before God. God demands from us unwavering sanctification and consecration.

3. DELIVERANCE FROM UNBEARABLE CONSEQUENCES OF SINFUL SPEECH

1 Chronicles 15:29
Michal, David’s wife despised him in her heart, because she felt he was ridiculing himself by dancing in the presence of God. She thought he was not dignifying himself as a king should. As a result of this action, God shut her womb, she was barren throughout life. II Samuel 6:16, 20-23

Our negative attitude to servants of God could result to fruitlessness and hinder our prayers. When the king came in to bless his household, Michal put her negative thoughts into words:

2 Samuel 6:20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

This was the woman David loved so much that he risked his life to get the foreskins of several philistines in battle to present to King Saul, her father as bride price. She was supposed to be the mother of the heir to the throne, but her womb remained permanently shut because it was God who did it Himself.

David responded fire for fire, making reference to how God rejected her father, Saul, and appointed him as king. Thus, family issues and squabble was brought out into the open.

Some people with their tongue destroy themselves, hinder their progress, prayers, getting help, making spiritual progress, and even making it to heaven. James 3:5-6; Ecclesiastes 5:2-6. We must not be rash with our mouth. We must choose our words carefully so that we do not incur the wrath of God.

ch 10:13-15.
vs 20a. Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber . . .
God wants us to bring our tongues under control, He does not approve of us speaking ill of our leaders, both in the church and in the nation.

Job 42:3; 34:31-32; Psalm 139:23-24. Even today, there is opportunity to make amends.

PRAYER:
– May God Almighty keep us from all errors. May we always give due honour to Him and His words.

– May God bless and keep our father in the Lord for us, May he continue to place a high premium on the word of God everyday of his life and ministry. Amen.
