Evangelical Belief in Reincarnation and Astrology Shockingly High, Survey Finds

Evangelical Belief in Reincarnation and Astrology Shockingly High, Survey Finds

Roughly half of self-identified evangelicals affirm at least one New Age belief, including a third who believe in psychics and one in five who believe in reincarnation or astrology, according to a new Pew Research Center poll.

The survey of Christians and non-Christians found that New Age beliefs may be more widespread than previously thought.

Among self-identified evangelicals:

  • 24 percent believe “spiritual energy can be located within physical things.”

  • 33 percent believe in psychics.

  • 19 percent believe in reincarnation.

  • 18 percent believe in astrology.

Forty-seven percent of evangelicals affirm at least one of the four New Age beliefs. That percentage is even higher among Catholics (70 percent), mainline Christians (67 percent), and Protestants from the historically black tradition (72 percent). Twenty-two percent of atheists and 56 percent of agnostics affirm at least one of the four New Age beliefs.

Among the general population, 69 percent of women and 55 percent of men believe in at least one New Age tenant.

“Just as women are more likely than men to identify with a religion and to engage in a number of religious practices, women also are more likely to hold New Age beliefs,” Claire Gecewicz, a research analyst at Pew Research Center, wrote. “Across all four measures – belief in psychics, reincarnation,…

Timothy Keller Warns Christians Not to Assign the Church a Political Party

Timothy Keller Warns Christians Not to Assign the Church a Political Party

Christian author and American Theologian Timothy Keller argued in a New York Times op-ed that Christians cannot and should not assign the church a political party in an effort to combat modern social issues.

Keller wrote on Saturday that the Christian approach to social concerns could be argued from both the left and the right.

“For example, following both the Bible and the early church, Christians should be committed to racial justice and the poor, but also to the understanding that sex is only for marriage and for nurturing family,” he wrote.

“One of those views seems liberal and the other looks oppressively conservative. The historical Christian positions on social issues do not fit into contemporary political alignments.”

Keller asserted that he is not saying that Christians should avoid making stands on important issues, in fact, he counters that idea pointing to the churches in the 19th century that did not speak out against slavery. Keller said, “American churches in the early 19th century that did not speak out against slavery because that was what we would now call ‘getting political’ were actually supporting slavery by doing so.”

The founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church continued, “The Bible shows believers as holding important posts in pagan governments — think of Joseph and Daniel in the Old Testament.” “Christians should be…

Open Heavens 3 October 2018 – Dangers of Bad Habits

Open Heavens 3 October 2018 Wednesday Daily Devotional by Pastor E A Adeboye – Dangers of Bad Habits

Topic: Dangers of Bad Habits (Open Heavens 3 October 2018)

Memorise: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.Romans 12:2

Read: Mark 7:20-23 (KJV)

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Bible in One Year: Isaiah 30-32, Luke 1:26-56

Open Heavens 3 October 2018 Wednesday MESSAGE:

Bad habits may initially start as harmless actions or inactions that can be easily overlooked. Nevertheless, don’t be deceived, bad habits can ruin a person’s life and prevent him or her from achieving God’s plan and purpose over time. Bad habits don’t start suddenly; they become habits after an individual fails to stop them early enough. Over time, they grow into something big and difficult to control, having enough power to destroy the destiny of their victim. Is there a character flaw in you that people are beginning to complain about, or do you find yourself indulging in things that you know are inappropriate? Attack that character flaw now before it destroys you.

In today’s Bible reading, Jesus made it clear that a person is defiled by what comes from inside him or her, and that evil thoughts originates from within the heart. This is equally true for bad habits. Before a habit is formed, it starts as thoughts and suggestions that seem harmless. If a fellow chooses to accept these thoughts and suggestions, dwells on them and begins to cultivate them in his or her heart, they will soon begin to manifest outwardly in that person’s speech, actions and motives, if the fellow does not quickly notice the character flaw and take steps to change it, it becomes a habit that will end up defining him or her. For example, some people have the habit of going late to meetings. It usually starts with thoughts like “am sure this meeting won’t start at the time stated,” and before long, they will find themselves arriving late to every single meeting. For some people, it is the way they eat. When they are indoors, they say to themselves “let me eat the way I like; after all, nobody is watching me.” They then become accustomed to eating in an uncultured or unhealthy manner, and they end up embarrassing themselves when they eat like that in public. Habits, small as they may seem, can be very costly if not managed properly. As a young man, I once lost a chance for a commonwealth scholarship abroad because I had poor eating habits.

Lastly, many people look at children of God and make a conclusion about God from what they see in their lives. Don’t let your habit give God a bad reputation. Be careful what you do and how you do it. Most times, people don’t come and tell you about your bad habits, but they can see it all. This is why you need to watch yourself. Ask for the truth on bad habits you may have from someone close enough to be sincere and open with you. I pray that you will become so filled with the Holy Spirit that all your words and actions will be directed by Him alone in Jesus Name.

Open Heavens 3 October 2018 Wednesday Action Point:

Find someone close to you who you know will be honest with you and ask him or her to tell you the bad habits they may have observed in you.

Can peace afford.

I need Thee, Oh, I need Thee,
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh bless me now, my Saviour;
I come to Thee.

Temptations lose their pow’r
When Thou art nigh.

In joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain.

Teach me Thy will,
And Thy rich promises
In me fulfil.

Most Holy One;
O make me Thine indeed,
Thou blessed Son.

Christian charity accuses government of ‘undermining marriage’

Ministers said the move, announced at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, was an “important step forward for equality”.

It follows a Supreme Court ruling that legislation on civil partnerships, which are currently open only to same-sex couples, was in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan (pictured above), a couple from London had taken their case to the Supreme Court.

The Government said extending them to opposite-sex couples in England and Wales would provide greater security for those who wanted legal recognition for their relationship but did not want to get married.

In a statement Mrs May said: “This change in the law helps protect the interests of opposite-sex couples who want to commit, want to formalise their relationship but don’t necessarily want to get married.

“As home secretary, I was proud to sponsor the legislation that created equal marriage.

“Now, by extending civil partnerships, we are making sure that all couples, be they same-sex or opposite-sex, are given the same choices in life.”

Christian charity CARE has criticised the move.

In a statement, spokesperson James Mildred said: “Coming off the back of the Government’s rush to implement no fault divorce, coupled with today’s announcement it’s a double whammy.

“There is a real narrative developing that this is a Government unwilling to…

British City Protests Franklin Graham Visit with Giant Rainbow-Colored Jesus

British City Protests Franklin Graham Visit with Giant Rainbow-Colored Jesus

The Franklin Graham-led Festival of Hope in Blackpool, England, saw an estimated 9,000 people attend and more than 200 churches participate, despite opposition from city officials and LGBT activists.

Protesters outside the Winter Gardens – where the Festival was held in September — pointed to Franklin Graham’s stance against same-sex marriage and his statements calling homosexuality a sin.

The city’s 518-foot-tall Blackpool Tower was lit up in rainbow colors and also displayed a rainbow flag to show the city’s solidarity with LGBT people, according to The Guardian. Some urged the city to stop the festival, but the city council said it had a contractual obligation to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

A handful of protesters outside the Winter Gardens handed out pamphlets with quotes from Graham. Accompanying them was a 12-foot-tall mannequin dubbed “Big Jesus,” which is owned by the LGBT-affirming congregation, Liberty Church. The Big Jesus figure wore a rainbow sash and held rainbow-colored balloons.

“Franklin Graham maintains wholehearted support for Trump and has a belief that God put Trump in the White House. To me, in the light of the many Trump policies that have harmed the most vulnerable in society, Graham’s support for Trump questions his credibility as a Christian leader,” Nina Parker of Liberty Church told The Guardian….

Advice for Christian parents as stats say phones cause daily arguments

A study by Common Sense Media and the University of Southern California found that a third of parents said phones interrupted conversations and 28 percent said they disrupted meals.

Dr Bex Lewis, Senior Lecturer in Digital Marketing and author of Raising Children in a Digital Age told Premier’s News Hour that sometimes there is scaremongering involved in these studies:

“I think there’s a huge amount of stuff in the media about screen time which is actually causing concerns about screen time. it’s self-creating.”

“We need to look at what people are doing on it. I think there’s going to be a lot of battles if parents are being told all the time ‘reduce your screen time, reduce your children’s screen time’. Whereas I would go much more for a ‘talk about how you’re using it’ [approach], talk about if you’ve got concerns that someone is over-using it but Matt Hancock (the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care) is talking about introducing a new law on screen time time and I’m just not sure that’s ever going to work because people are different.”

“Talk to children about what they’re actually doing online and see if you’ve got any concerns. Don’t focus so much on the time, talk to them about what they’re doing, try and demonstrate that you understand that it’s positive and that you’re not necessarily trying to limit it and then I think the children will open up…

Trump Administration Denies Visas to Same-Sex Partners of Foreign Diplomats

Trump Administration Denies Visas to Same-Sex Partners of Foreign Diplomats

The Trump Administration implemented a new policy on Monday which denies visas to the same-sex domestic partners of foreign diplomats and United Nations employees. This reverses a policy put in place by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2009. The Administration will now only grant visas to same-sex partners if they are legally married.

The Trump Administration argues that this policy brings the treatment of same-sex couples in line with the treatment of opposite-sex couples and is more in keeping with the 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage. The United States only issues visas to the spouses of opposite-sex couples and not domestic partners, so the new policy brings treats same-sex couples equally.

The United Nations issued a circular in September from the US mission to the UN explaining both the rationale and the implications of the new policy. They informed diplomats and employees with same-sex domestic partners on G-4 non-immigrant visas that they will have to be legally married in order to stay in the U.S. They have until the end of the year to comply or leave for their home country.

Opponents of the new policy argue that this places a hardship on same-sex couples from countries that either criminalize homosexuality, do not recognize the validity of gay marriages, or only have civil unions. They say this forces the partners of UN…

Are Children Saved? Christian Theologian Examines Age of Accountability

(Photo: Unsplash/Charlein Gracia)

The Bible’s stance on the age of accountability and whether children are saved is debatable, according to a Southern Baptist theologian.

Stephen J. Wellum, professor of Christian theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and editor of the Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, argued in an article for The Gospel Coalition on Monday that an examination of the question may open the door to the possibility that “exceptional” cases of salvation are possible.

Still, Wellum, who is also an author, insisted that debating such cases should not push Christians away preaching the “normal” path of salvation.

“Most Christian traditions teach that children enter the world fallen due to Adam’s sin, but some argue children are not guilty before God until they knowingly disobey God’s commands. If the child dies before reaching that age, he or she receives salvation based on Christ’s finished work,” he noted.

“Once the child knowingly sins, however, they become accountable for their actions and have reached the age of accountability. At that point, salvation comes through conscious, active repentance and faith in Christ.”

When looking at questions relating to children’s salvation, along with the salvation of people who have lost their mental…

‘Unprecedented’ scale of evangelism planned for 2020

The campaign Advance 2020 was launched at Lambeth Palace on Monday with over a hundred leaders present.

It’s being spearheaded by Andy Hawthorne, from youth charity the Message. Speaking to Premier, he said: “I felt like we need to see a multiplication of the evangelist gift but also in Isaiah 60 it says ‘assemble my people’ and I felt like we need to start going big again”

Those involved in the project include Hope, the Evangelical Alliance (EA) and the Church of England.

Speaking to Premier about the EA’s involvement, Gavin Calver said: “We’re dreaming of seeing the United Kingdom come back to relationship with Jesus as many people are released as witnesses to their friends, their communities, sports clubs. We’re really excited.”

Between now and 2020, there will be training events for those wanting to engage in more evangelism.

It’s hoped that a united approach will lead to “the gospel being taken to the nation on an unprecedented scale”.

Death Toll in Indonesia Climbs to More than 1,300, Includes 34 Bible Camp Children

Death Toll in Indonesia Climbs to More than 1,300, Includes 34 Bible Camp Children

Authorities found some 34 bodies of children in an Indonesian church after an earthquake and tsunami pummeled an Indonesian island Friday.

Red Cross spokeswoman Aulia Arriani said the children were attending a Christian bible camp when they were killed. Officials expect to find more bodies as the death toll continues to rise.

According to reports, more than 1,300 people died in the disasters.

Volunteers in the area are working on digging a mass grave for the dead.

Meanwhile in Palu, a military plan carrying supplies was unable to land because of crowds at the airport.

“There was a fear of the crowd mobbing the plane,” a representative for an aid organization said. “People are so desperate for aid.”

Other reports say that stores have been “cleaned out” of supplies and there has also been some looting.

“Security on the ground is not great,” the aid worker said. “There’s no power, there’s limited food and no access to clean water … Our biggest concern is the security of our staff and making sure that their supplies will be going to the most needy.”

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said tsunami detectors buoys were not working, but a tsunami warning was still issued.

But many in Palu did not receive the warning because of power outages.

Nugroho also added that…
