Church leaders shouldn’t keep silent over Brexit risks

Speaking to the Church Times, the Lord Bishop of Leeds, who is the lead bishop for European issues in the House of Lords, said it was their duty to “tell the truth” about the consequences of Brexit, regardless of “what people think they want to hear”.

The Rt Rev Nick Baines wrote “I was told in the General Synod that the bishops were out of touch with poor people in the north, and should accept their suspicion of immigrants, [their] resentment against established politics, and populist anger.

 

“Try suggesting that to bishops in 1930s Germany, or 1970s USSR.”

Meanwhile, a new poll has found most Church of England bishop’s views on Brexit are opposite to most Anglicans.

Archbishop’s views on Brexit don’t reflect those of most Anglicans, poll finds

The study, published in the journal Religion, State and Society, found that 66 per cent of Church of England Christians voted Leave, compared to a national average of 53 per cent.

Most Rev Justin Welby indicated ahead of the 2016 referendum that he would vote to remain in the European Union.

 

In fact, according to The Daily Telegraph, just one Church of England bishop, Mark Rylands, Bishop of Shrewsbury, is on record as supporting Brexit.

Greg Smith from the William Temple Foundation and Linda Woodhead from Lancaster University wrote in the London School of Economics and Political Science’s blog to try and uncover the reasons for the disparity between “the beliefs of UK evangelicals – including the Archbishop of Canterbury – and ‘normal’ Anglicans”.

They concluded: “Most Anglicans take a positive view of English culture and ethnicity, and regard the EU as a threat to their heritage, values, identity and parliamentary sovereignty.

“These concerns, which are sometimes lumped together as ‘nativist’ are greater even than their economic ones.”

They also noted that “Anglicans tend to be older than the population as a whole, and that older people were more likely to vote Leave”.

Multi-faith school in Israel builds bridges

Margaret MacDonald spoke out about Tabeetha School in Jaffa to mark UN International Day of Peace on Thursday.

The Church of Scotland institution has a mix of 339 Christian, Jewish and Muslim children from across the world.

 

Ms MacDonald, of Bo’ness in West Lothian, said: “The school is a special place and the Church of Scotland’s presence in this country is very important.

“It is a bright light in a very difficult land.

“It is a land of fear where there is mistrust and lack of understanding among the Jewish and Arab communities.

“The Church of Scotland brings both groups together.”

She added government-run schools in Israel generally cater to individual communities, which leaves little opportunity to learn about anyone different from themselves.

Tabeetha, founded in 1863, is one of the few places in Israel where children and young people of different languages, faiths, cultures and histories are educated together in English.

It has 34 teachers from around the world and has formed a new twinning partnership with Braes High School in Polmont, near Falkirk.

To mark UN International Day of Peace, which commemorates the ideals of peace, a joint no-uniform day is being held at both schools.

Topic: Decide to Be Second [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Saturday September 22, 2018]

Be devoted to one another with [authentic] brotherly affection [as members of one family], give preference to one another in honor. — Romans 12:10 (AMP)

Giving preference to others requires a willingness to adapt and adjust. It means to allow another to go first or to have the best of something. We show preference when we give someone else the best cut of meat on the platter instead of keeping it back for ourselves. We show preference when we allow someone with fewer groceries in his cart than we have in ours to go in front of us at the supermarket checkout counter, or when we are waiting in line to use a public restroom and someone behind us in line is pregnant or elderly and we choose to let that individual go ahead of us.

Each time we show preference, we have to make a mental adjustment. We were planning to be first, but we decide to be second. We are in a hurry, but we decide to wait on someone else who seems to have a greater need. A person is not yet rooted and grounded in love until they have learned to show preference to others (see Ephesians 3:17). Don’t just learn to adjust, but learn to do it with a good attitude. Learning to do these things is learning to walk in love.

Prayer Starter: Father, help me to truly prefer other people today with a good attitude. Help me to humble myself and love others the way You do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Catholic bishop accused of raping nun arrested by Indian police

Franco Mulakkal was formally arrested after police questioned him for three days in the southern Indian city of Kochi.

The nun with the Missionaries of Jesus order filed a police complaint in June accusing the bishop of raping her from 2014 to 2016.

 

Mulakkal is the bishop of the northern Indian city of Jalandhar.

He denied the accusations, saying the nun was angry because he had ordered her to be disciplined.

Police officer Hari Sankar told The Press Trust of India news agency that Mulakkal will appear in court.

Dozens of nuns, activists and advocates have protested outside a court demanding his prosecution.

In her police complaint, the nun alleged that Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions. She said she had to approach police because church authorities did not act on her complaints.

Earlier this month, she wrote to the Vatican’s representative in New Delhi, alleging that the bishop was using “political and money power” to “bury” the case and seeking his removal.

On Thursday, the Vatican relieved Mulakkal “temporarily” of all pastoral responsibilities as the bishop of the Jalandhar diocese, the Press Trust reported.

Mr Sankar told reporters on Friday that the police would now investigate charges of rape, illegal confinement, unnatural sex and intimidation. A judge would decide whether Mulakkal would be…

TOPIC: Beware Of End-Time Deceivers (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries Saturday, 22 September 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Timothy 4:2-5

MEMORY VERSE: “For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.” – Matthew 13:15

The MESSAGE:

One of the characteristics of the end-time in which we are, is the great outpouring of knowledge of God. The Lordship of Jesus Christ is widely known and most of the signs of His return are evident. Unfortunately, iniquity still abound and the love of many has grown cold. Experiences have shown that the message of the cross no longer excites many Pentecostal Christian church members. What most Christians want to hear now is on prosperity and breakthroughs. Christians are now more involved in the issues of wealth and affluence while holiness and the Great Commission are pushed to the background. My interaction with young people has revealed that in some modern Pentecostal churches, it is considered old-fashioned to carry the Holy Bible in its printed form, so that young people who cannot afford iPad stay away from church services. This is very disheartening.

In some situations where God in His mercy releases some messages to impact people’s lives, some of the hearers unfortunately, rather focus on the vocabulary, the tenses, the pronunciation, the dressing of the Pastor and other irrelevant things. These are people with itching ears and who do not fear God. The devil also blocks people’s ability to listen by causing them to sleep while the sermon is going on; he causes satanic buying and selling in some people’s minds. The Bible, however, makes it clear that Jesus will deny many of the so-called miracle workers as well as their seekers, on that great day. It would be a tragedy on that day to hear the words: “I know you not, depart, ye worker of iniquity!”

The world and all its glamour are passing away. Why not tune your ears now to the word of life and to the frequency of the Holy Spirit? God wants to heal your heart and your life; be open to receive. So, confess your faults to Jesus and make a decision to follow Him to the end. He will hear you and give you the desires of your heart.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

Matthew 22:36 “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.“

Text: Matthew 22:34-46

Jesus revealed that all of the Old Testament laws were designed to instruct us how to love God and love others. Therefore, the two commands that dealt directly with loving God and others (Lev. 19:18 and Dt. 6:5) were the most important.

The religious leaders had become so obsessed with keeping every minor detail of the law that they had lost sight of its ultimate purpose. They neither loved God nor their fellow man, yet they thought they were keeping the law.

The same thing is happening today. Some of the cruelest acts of men towards their fellow men have been done in the name of the Lord by people who thought they were defending God’s holy commandments. However, if we violate one of the two greatest commandments in an effort to enforce some other commandment, then we are misapplying God’s Word just as these religious Jews did.

The Old Testament law and the New Testament concept of grace compels men to the same end, that is to love God and their fellowmen. However, the motivations to this end are different. The Old Testament law motivated men to love God and their fellowman through fear of punishment if they failed to comply. The New Testament concept of grace freely gives men a God-kind of love that is unconditional and tells them to love others as they are loved.

It is possible to display actions of holiness, but not love God. It is impossible for God’s kind of love not to produce holiness. Holiness is a fruit and not a root of loving God.

Salvation is an act of God. It is initiated by God, wrought by God, and sustained by God. The faith that saves the soul is described as faith in Christ as the Son of God—not as a good man or a great man, but as the uniquely begotten Son of the living God!

This is consistent with the witness of the entire New Testament and with the proclamations of the first preachers of the Gospel. All proclaim the necessity of faith in Jesus Christ as deity.

Topic: When You See Jesus [TREM 22 September 2018 Daily Devotional]

“In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.” Isaiah 6:1 (KJV)

One thing is to be born again, but another thing is to truly see the Lord and what He has done on your behalf. There are many who are born again, but are yet to see Him as He is. The scripture declares that in the year king Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord. That means Isaiah had been a prophet, called and anointed by God but had not seen Him. He has not come to terms with the God that called him and the God that was using him. God had to get Uzziah out of the way because Uzziah had become like a god to Isaiah. Thereafter, as soon as Uzziah was taken out of the way, his eyes were open for the first time to the God that called him.

There are many of us believers that love God with all our heart but we’ve not truly seen Him because He is not reflected in the way we do things. Yes, you’re born again, you speak in tongues, you’re in church at all times but you have not really seen Him.

Imagine what happened to Isaiah after he beheld the Lord; he immediately realized his filth. He said to himself “…Woe is me!”, because he was then able to see himself in the light of God. “Woe is me, for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips…” In other words, he was not qualified to come before the Lord. At that point, an angel from God’s presence placed hot coal on his mouth, and declared that his iniquity had been taken away, and his sins purged. Immediately something happened to him. Guess what Isaiah’s response was to God’s grace and mercy? He immediately made himself available for the Master’s use.

Beloved, when you see Jesus, everything else loses value. He becomes the center of your life’s endeavours. Nothing will be too big a price to pay for the sake of Jesus, because He paid the ultimate price for your sake.
