Bert and Ernie Are NOT Gay, Sesame Street Creators Say

The production company and creator behind Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie said Tuesday, the couple is not gay, refuting a comment by a show writer that suggested the characters are homosexual.

“As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends,” Sesame Workshop said in a statement. “They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”

The confusion began when Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman – who is homosexual — said he viewed Bert and Ernie as gay when he wrote scripts.

“I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked ‘are Bert & Ernie lovers?,’” Saltzman told a gay new website. “And that, coming from a preschooler was fun. And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them.”

Saltzman said he viewed he and his boyfriend as Bert and Ernie.

But Frank Oz, the famous puppeteer who helped create the duo and voiced Bert, said the duo are not…

Universities lack diversity, Student Christian Movement agrees

On Wednesday, the organisation backed the document, written by the Universities and College Union, which also highlighted a lingering attainment gap between black and minority ethnic (BME) students and their white counterparts.

Feylyn Lewis, the BME student rep for the SCM told Premier: “Things really have to start [to change] at a senior level and work their way down.

“I think there really should be more of a prioritisation of the Race and Equality Charter.”

The Charter was introduced in 2014 to boost the representation and progression of BME students and staff at universities. So far, 48 institutions have signed up.

“We want to see universities, particularly at the vice chancellor-level, really taking this a duty… to support all of our students.”

A document published by the University and College Union (UCU) called for institutions to ramp up their efforts to ensure more students and academics from BME backgrounds are in further education.

It suggested expanding name-blind university applications to help stamp out discrimination and rewarding universities who fulfil the requirements of the Race and Equality Charter with a research funding boost.

Feylyn Lewis added: “We’re really seeing lower numbers of black and minority ethnic students actually enrolling at university and then sustaining a place at university as well.”

Asked why the issue is important for…

Hillsong Church Becomes Own Denomination, Splits From Australia’s Largest Pentecostal Group

(Photo: Facebook/Hillsong Church)Pastor Brian preaching on ‘My Faith, My Strength’ at Hillsong L.A.

Citing the growing global nature of the church, Brian Houston, global senior pastor of the popular Hillsong Church, has announced a split from Australia’s largest Pentecostal denomination to become a denomination of its own.

Since their inception, Hillsong Church has been a part of the Australian Christian Churches, a branch of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, which is the largest Pentecostal denomination in the world. In a recent letter to the ACC, Houston said Hillsong’s operation as a church had outgrown the capacity of the ACC.

“As Hillsong Church has continued to grow, we no longer see ourselves as an Australian Church with a global footprint, but rather a Global church with an Australian base — our global office now resides in the USA. Two thirds of the people attending Hillsong Church each weekend live in countries beyond Australia. We have pastoral staff in twenty-four nations around the world, representing 123 campuses and locations, with 263 different church services on any given weekend. We consider it to be ‘One House, with many rooms,'” Houston explained in the letter.

“So with that growing footprint in mind — it has become clear to us that we…

Christian fair trade charity Traidcraft fold

In a statement to supporters, CEO of Traidcraft Robin Roth said: “Traidcraft plc’s recent trading has been poor, and despite enormous efforts by staff, management, Fair Traders, and many fair trade shops over the last few years to reverse the company’s performance we have not yet succeeded.”

Traidcraft started in 1979, selling fairtrade coffee, sugar and chocolate as well as rugs and handmade baskets from Bangladesh. They started selling at church stalls and at markets, with a philosophy of close interaction of those who made the products and cutting out the middle-man.

They went on to sell fair trade clothes and wine.

Roth went on to say in his statement: “Traidcraft plc’s mission to put the principles of fair trade into commercial practice is not, in any sense, fulfilled but we appreciate that it is time to consider new approaches.

“We are very much aware of the impact that this will have on our producer friends. Over the years we have built up personal and trusting relationships with many organisations and we deeply regret that these will be coming to an end. We are communicating with all our partners to see if we can help them transfer their business to other organisations.”

He emphasises that the staff’s passion for the issue of fair trade has not changed and that they are grateful for potential doors opening elsewhere: “Many supporters have already offered…

Christian Leaders React to Ford Allegations against Kavanaugh

Christian Leaders React to Ford Allegations against Kavanaugh

Christian and evangelical leaders Tuesday said allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should be taken seriously, although some said the timing of it makes them skeptical.

“The timing makes it all very suspect,” Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, said on his radio program, Washington Watch with Tony Perkins.

If accuser Christine Blasey Ford “refuses to show” up for Monday’s Senate committee hearing to which she had been invited, “that is even more revealing than the fact that [Democrats] sat on this for six weeks,” Perkins said.

“[They] met with [Kavanaugh], did not bring it up, did not bring it up in the closed-door sessions,” Perkins said. “… [They] waited until the last moment to drop this … to keep him off the court.”

Republicans previously had scheduled a Thursday vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination. But when Ford alleged that Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her in high school, GOP leaders delayed the vote and invited Ford and Kavanaugh to testify before the Judiciary Committee Monday. Ford’s attorney now says she wants an FBI investigation into the allegation before she speaks to the committee.

Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, appeared on CNN Tuesday prior to Ford’s attorney saying she wanted FBI…

Atheist Politician Finds God, Gets Baptized at 85 After ‘Gnawing Pain in Soul’

(Screenshot: YouTube)Bill Hayden, former Governor-General of Australia, seen in this archival footage interview.

Bill Hayden, a former Governor-General of Australia and lifelong atheist, has found God and gotten baptized in a Roman Catholic Church at 85 years of age.

According to The Australian, Hayden “said it was witnessing so many selfless acts of compassion by Christians over his lifetime, and deep contemplation while recovering from a stroke, that prompted his decision.”

Australia’s The Catholic Leader reported that Hayden, who during his political career identified as a humanist, was baptized on September 9 at St. Mary’s Church in Ipswich.

Hayden revealed that he had been experiencing “a gnawing pain in my heart and soul about what is the meaning of life.”

“What’s my role in it?” he stated of the questions that bothered him.

He said that although in a declining health, he is hoping his new-found faith will inspire others.

“This took too long, and now I am going to be devoted,” Hayden noted.

“From this day forward I’m going to vouch for God,” he pledged.

Amnesty International Claims Children Were Killed by Being Swung Against Tree Trunks, While Other Civilians Were Raped and Burned Alive by South Sudan’s Military

A new report by Amnesty International has detailed the crimes committed with ‘staggering brutality’ by government soldiers and allied militia in South Sudan.

Children were killed by being swung against tree trunks and civilians were raped, burned alive, run over with armored vehicles and hanged from trees, even as the government pursued a new peace deal to end a civil war, it says.

The report, released Wednesday, is based on interviews with 100 displaced people from Leer and Mayendit counties in Unity State.

It describes attacks that took place between April and July this year, during a targeted offensive aimed at ‘clearing opposition-held areas.’

Leer and Mayendit have been among the hardest hit regions during South Sudan’s five-year civil war, in which tens of thousands have died and over 2 million have fled the country, triggering Africa’s worst refugee crisis since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

According to the report, those unable to flee the government offensive were often killed, with elderly and disabled people burned alive in their homes.

Civilians told Amnesty how soldiers and militias drove amphibious vehicles into swaps in search of people who had fled, while firing gunshots at random into the reeds hoping to hit them.

An elderly woman, Nyalony, described how she witnessed her husband and two other men killed by soldiers: ‘When the attack started, early in the morning while we were sleeping, my husband and I ran to the swamp together.

‘Later in the morning, after the fighting was over, the soldiers came into the swamp looking for people, and sprayed the…

Christians in central Asia facing worship bans, arrest and torture, pastor claims

The charity Release International has linked this to a rise in Islamic nationalism across central Asia in places like Tajikistan.

Pastor Batyr fled Turkmenistan after being arrested and tortured 18-years-ago for talking about Jesus.

Speaking through a translator, he told Release the situation there remains tough.

“The totalitarian control over all leaders and churches goes on.

“Freedom of movement and freedom to preach the gospel is not allowed. Turkmen and Uzbek churches never get official registration and the state doesn’t want to recognise Christians.”

Security police in Tajikistan arrested and fined ten Christians last for handing out gospel literature.

Release International said the group had gone to the Pamir Mountains to give out tracts and were fined about £750 – more than most Tajiks would earn in six months.

In neighbouring Kazakhstan, a new religious survey has found that 263 people were punished in 2017 for hosting religious meetings, offering religious literature and other offences.

The authorities prosecuted 30 Christians for sharing their beliefs, according to Forum 18. Most of those prosecuted for ‘religious crimes’ were Protestants.

Highlighting the persecution Muslim converts face, Pastor Batyr said: “We become enemies of the people.

“They [Muslim converts] suffer more than all and are persecuted more than all.”

Christine Blasey Ford Requests ‘Full Investigation’ by FBI of Kavanaugh

Christine Blasey Ford Requests ‘Full Investigation’ by FBI of Kavanaugh

The California professor Christine Blasey Ford who recently accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a high school party, has called for a “full investigation” by the FBI before she goes to any congressional hearing or “interrogation” into her accusations.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, responded to this call saying, Ford has been and still is invited to speak with the committee, but the FBI he said, would not have “any bearing on what Dr. Ford tells the committee, so there is no reason for any further delay.”

According to CNN, Lisa Banks, one of Ford’s lawyers, said in a letter to Grassley, that Ford “will talk to the committee,” but is not prepared for the hearing on Monday.

Banks goes on to say that Ford has been dealing with the receipt of threats since her name was publicly tied to the accusations.

“There should be no rush to a hearing,” Banks continued.

Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, said he wanted to hear from Ford before voting on Kavanaugh’s confirmation, but he along with other top Republicans who wished to hear from the accuser, have expressed that they will move forward with a vote if Ford decides not to testify.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., took to Twitter on Tuesday saying, “After learning of the allegation, Chairman @ChuckGrassleytook immediate action to ensure both Dr. Ford and…

(Photo: Willow Creek Association)Willow Creek Community Church’s founder Bill Hybels speaks to participants at a Global Leadership Summit in Lebanon via live broadcast.

Willow Creek Community Church has announced that the heads of two top denominational groups will lead the investigation into sex abuse claims against Bill Hybels.

Willow Creek made the announcement on Tuesday along with the Willow Creek Association, revealing that the investigative advisory group will be led by Jo Anne Lyon, general superintendent emerita of The Wesleyan Church, and Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals.

The statement explained that the group will “consider allegations related to Bill Hybels as founder and pastor of the church and founder and spokesperson of the association.”

It will also “review organizational culture of the church and association” and “make recommendations to the church and association for future actions.”

The evangelical megachurch first announced in August that it will be commissioning a new investigation into Hybels, who retired prematurely in April after several women accused him of decades-old sex misconduct and abuse.
