Billy Graham 18 September 2018: Finite Beings—Infinite Desires

Topic: Finite Beings—Infinite Desires [Billy Graham Daily Devotional 18 September 2018]

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. — Hebrews 13:14

One of the basic desires of the soul is to live on and on. Self-preservation is the first law of nature. People may grow tired of aches and pains and the decrepitude of old age, but they do not grow tired of life itself. God has arranged to satisfy this yearning of the soul to live forever, and the desire to be free from pain and sickness and trouble. People are little creatures with big capacities, finite beings with infinite desires, deserving nothing but demanding all. God made people with this huge capacity and desire in order that He might come in and completely satisfy that desire. God made the human heart so big that only He can fill it. He made it demand so much that only He can supply that demand . . . Jesus Christ is the only one who holds the keys of death. In His death and resurrection He took the sting out of death, and now God offers eternal life to every person who puts his trust and faith in His Son Jesus Christ.

Prayer for the day: Lord Jesus, when I come to the end of this earthly life, You will be there to guide me to my heavenly home. Thank You, my loving Father.

Christian charity ready to help people affected by Typhoon

Two women have died in a landslide and torrential rain continues. The typhoon made landfall before dawn in the coastal town of Baggao in Cagayan province on the northern tip of Luzon Island.

More than five million people were at risk from the storm, which the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Centre downgraded from a super typhoon but said was still punching powerful winds and gusts equivalent to a category four Atlantic hurricane.

Mark Bulpitt, Head of Fragile States & Emergency Response at Christian charity World Vision told Premier: “We’re taking this as a very serious typhoon. It’s expected to hit at 200 kilomentres an hour and you compare that to Typhooon Haiyan…which was the strongest ever typhoon to hit the Philippines.”

Mark explained how several people are there, ready to offer aid as soon as it’s safe: “World Vision is in the Philippines and we have been there for 60 years – we have a lot of dedicated staff that have expertise in responding to crises like this. They have worked in 16 crises in the last 5 years alone.

“We’ve already pre-positioned supplies for 4000 families, ready so they can be moved quickly so we can respond immediately to help anyone that needs life-saving equipment.”

“The equipment we have includes things like hygiene kits, blankets mosquito nets so we don’t get secondary issues arising, such as from malaria.”

“Once the typhoon hits, we have assessment teams that are already near the suspected locations…they can move…

Samaritan’s Purse Aids Families in N.C. after Hurricane Florence Leaves Massive Damage

Samaritan’s Purse Aids Families in N.C. after Hurricane Florence Leaves Massive Damage

On Saturday, Samaritan’s Purse North American Ministries sent two disaster relief teams and staff members to North Carolina to assist residents who were “hit the hardest” by Hurricane Florence.

The Christian organization wrote on their website that they have sent the two teams to pre-stage in the towns of New Bern and Wilmington, N.C. As of Sunday, the first relief base was established at Port City Community Church in New Bern. The New Bern mayor is reporting that approximately 4,000 homes were damaged in the storm.

Samaritan’s Purse staff and volunteer teams will start work on Monday aiding homeowners with cleanup in a variety of ways including “tarping roofs, chainsaw work, and mud-outs.”

A representative for Samaritan’s Purse wrote on their website, “Our task is to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus for those in need in the hardest hit areas.”

Florence is now a tropical depression but is continuing to drop large volumes of rain in the Carolinas. Reportedly, some parts of North Carolina have already received almost 35 inches of rain. The town of Swansboro has reported nearly 34 inches. This is the most rain to ever be deposited from a single tropical system in North Carolina.

Though the property damage that has occurred as a result of the storm is great, it is not the only concern for N.C. Because of Florence, sections of…

(Screenshot: Vimeo)Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village Church in Highland Village, Texas.

Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village Church in Highland Village, Texas, revealed on Sunday that police are currently investigating a sexual assault allegation involving a minor from his church. The incident reportedly occurred at a camp for kids held six years ago.

“The investigation is regarding information that has come to light about the 2012 Mount Lebanon Kids Camp that The Village Church attended. The Cedar Hill Police department, under the direction of Detective Michael Hernandez, is investigating a report of sexual assault by an adult against a minor at the camp,” Chandler said to his congregation, reading from a prepared statement. “Earlier this year, the minor came to a place where it was possible to verbalize the memory of what happened for the first time through ongoing therapy. Detective Hernandez has been investigating the case since that time.”

While they are only investigating one case of assault at this time, Chandler said they have tried reaching out to every family that participated in the camp to inform them of the investigation.

“If you are the mom or dad of a kid that was at the 2012 camp, we had a meeting Monday night with Detective Hernandez to inform you of…

Peterborough Cathedral visits rocket following spaceship landing

The Soyuz capsule was installed at the church at the beginning of August with an appearance from Peake himself to launch the free exhibition.

Year on year figures show a 600 per cent increase in the number of visitors.

Along with the spaceship, the parachute which brought it back along with Peake’s space suit are also on display. Visitors also have access to a virtual reality experience on life on the Soyuz.

With the display staying until November, thousands more are expected to visit in the coming weeks.

Speaking to Peterboroughtoday.co.uk, Vice Dean Canon Tim Alban Jones, said: “We have been delighted by the phenomenal visitor response to Tim Peake’s Spacecraft exhibition.

“Most visitors are seeing the capsule and the cathedral for the first time, and it’s wonderful to see their reaction to both.”

Hindu Extremists Accelerate Clampdown on Christians in Uttar Pradesh, India

Hindu Extremists Accelerate Clampdown on Christians in Uttar Pradesh, India

NEW DELHISeptember 17, 2018 (Morning Star News) – Under the influence of Hindu extremists, police and media campaigns against Christians in Uttar Pradesh state, India has mushroomed since one such attack sent a pastor into hiding last month, sources said.

After false media reports of large-scale, fraudulent conversions of Hindus by pastor Durga Prasad Yadav in Jaunpur District went viral in July, followed by false police charges, there have been multiple area reports of disrupted worship meetings, pastors and evangelists arrested and Christian leaders fleeing their homes to avoid arrest, sources said.

Pastor Yadav is a resident of Bhulandih village. On Sunday (Sept. 16), Jaunpur Police blocked all roads to Bhulandih village, keeping worshippers from Bhulandih Church, sources said.

“They have stopped believers and asked them to go back home,” a source said. “Hindu extremist groups are shouting anti-Christian slogans around the churches in many places in Jaunpur. They are threatening believers with severe consequences and asking every believer as to how much money he has been given to convert.”

Christians have been targeted in at least five cases, four of them Jaunpur and one in Pratapgarh District, 58 miles away. Four of the cases erupted on Thursday (Sept. 13).

At least 12 pastors have gone into hiding since then, a source…

Texas Megachurch Says Disputed Retirement Benefits Were to Be Funded From Natural Gas Revenue

(Photo: Facebook)Crossroads Christian Church in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Crossroads Christian Church in Grand Prairie, Texas, revealed Monday that a disputed supplemental retirement benefits package for which former executive pastor Mel Dietz and his wife Vicki sued for millions of dollars was to be funded from natural gas revenues that could not support the plan overtime.

The explanation comes after a jury decided last week that the church failed to provide the couple nearly $4 million in supplemental retirement benefits despite employing them for more than 20 years.

“Crossroads is disappointed that compelling evidence was not present to provide the jury with additional facts, which could have changed the outcome of the jury’s decision about the Supplemental Retirement Plan,” Andrew Stubblefield, lead trial counsel for the 8,000-member church and an attorney with Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, said in a statement to The Christian Post. “Crossroads remains unfailingly committed to its mission, its ministry, and its members. Once the verdict is finalized, the Church will weigh its options for further action.”

A release from the law firm representing the couple, Clouse Brown PLLC, said Dietz worked at the church that preaches financial freedom, from 1995 to 2015. He…

Call for prayer by those left devastated by typhoon in the Philippines

The typhoon has weakened to a tropical storm and, on Monday, it slammed southern China, where 2.5 million people have been evacuated.

Many of the communities were prepared for the storm but a rescue mission is underway as dozens missing in a gold-mining area in the Philippines are feared buried in a landslide.

Nick Guttmann, head of humanitarian division at the charity described to Premier some of the devastation caused by the typhoon.

Speaking during Premier’s News Hour, he explained: “People’s homes have been destroyed, there have been flooding, there have been landslides and also it’s caused huge damage to crops which were about to be harvested.

“So, the devastation for people’s livelihoods – how they’re actually going to be living over the next months ahead – is very, very serious indeed.”

Soldiers have been deployed in the Philippines to stop illegal mining which – after heavy rains – has made the soil unstable.

Despite the devastation, Guttmann said all hope is not lost.

He added: “People will need cash in order to purchase items.

“Some of our partners will be providing food and equipment to help people make sure they do have safe drinking water.

“There is always hope and people will be able to recover in the long-run, but it’s going to be tough.

Guttmann encouraged…

Beth Moore Tells The Atlantic the Struggle Women Evangelists Face

Beth Moore Tells The Atlantic the Struggle Women Evangelists Face

Author and Evangelical Beth Moore, 61, composed a series of tweets in 2016 criticizing the words and actions of now President Donald Trump and the ‘evangelical political machine’ at a great personal cost.

This month, The Atlantic sat down with Moore to talk about the controversy surrounding the tweets she posted during the 2016 presidential election and the fall out that came with them.

In the article, which will be published in the October 2018 edition of the Atlantic, the author speaks about how in October of 2016, Moore came to hear the infamous Access Hollywood tape where Trump is recorded talking about women in vulgar and graphic terms. After hearing the tape, while on a plane home from a ministry event, Moore filtered through stacks of newspaper clippings and transcripts to try to distinguish and understand the character of the then-presidential candidate along with the people who defended his words.

Moore told the Atlantic that she could not dismiss this as “locker-room talk,” like so many of her male counterparts had, noting that she was “so appalled.”

After looking into Trump’s comments and the defenses of so many evangelists, Moore decided to take to Twitter. The Atlantic writes that “she decided to compose the tweets that changed her life.”

She wrote, “Wake up, Sleepers, to what women have dealt with all along in environments of gross…

Tripadvisor reviews for Salisbury Cathedral halted after interview with Novichok suspects

Spoof comments appeared in the wake of a broadcast including Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov – who British authorities believed targeted former Russia spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in March this year.

The pair told Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of RT (formerly Russia Today), that they were visiting the Wiltshire city as tourists eager to see the “famous Salisbury Cathedral”.

Among the apparently false reviews later spotted on TripAdvisor, one read: “I wanted to visit the WorldWide famous town of Salisbury since I was a boy. Could say it was eventful.”

Asked about their intention for visiting Salisbury, Mr Petrov and Mr Boshirov said: “Our friends had been suggesting for a long time we visit this wonderful town.

“There’s the famous Salisbury cathedral, famous not only in Europe but in the whole world, it’s famous for its 123 metre spire.

“It’s famous for its clock, one of the first [of its kind] ever created in the whole world which is still working.”

One comment to appear on TripAdvisor following the interview said: “Came all the way from Russia to see the spire, which is 123 metres tall you know.

“Wonderful place to visit and very glad we came. We came two times. All just a short 3,000km hop from Moscow, well worth it!”

While another said: “Me and my co-assassin, sorry, ‘tourist’ went there because the big man (Putin) needed a loose end sorting…
