1.5 Million Evacuated as North Carolina Prepares for Hurricane Florence

1.5 Million Evacuated as North Carolina Prepares for Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence, a powerful Category 4 storm, is less than 48 hours out from making landfall in the Carolinas. This morning, Hurricane models are predicting that Florence will stall over the Carolina coast and make an unexpected shift south toward South Carolina.  According to Fox News Senior Meteorologist Janice Dean, this behavior might cause “a major flooding event.”

Though the storm is predicted to veer south, meteorologists are still urging Virginians to prepare for the possibility of heavy rains and tropical storm speed winds.

According to the Washington Post, the Cat. 4 storm is predicted to have damaging winds, cause flash flooding, and could possibly cause widespread power outages.

The Post reports that the storm could cause the sea level to rise by 9 feet at its peak and heavy winds have the potential to take down trees and damage property. Similar to Hurricane Harvey’s behavior, Hurricane Florence is expected to slow significantly when it reaches the coast and dump dangerous amounts of rain in the Carolinas.

Florence is predicted to be the most intense storm to strike the region since Hugo, some 25 years ago.

Forecasts hypothesize that Florence’s center will arrive at the South and North Carolina border on Friday as either a Category 3 or 4 hurricane. As the storm approaches the coast, its forward motion will rapidly slow, with the winds and…

Iran Looks Warily to China for Help as US Sanctions Resume – Urban Christian News

It’s hard not to see China wherever you look in Iran.

From Chinese goods flooding markets to its business people eager for deals as Western business interests flee, Iran likely will further embrace Beijing as an alternative market for its crude oil and financial transactions amid uncertainty over the nuclear deal.

That doesn’t mean China offers a safe haven to Iran without conditions. Beijing will try to extract the maximum benefit, analysts say, and there is growing concern that China may take advantage of Iran.

Iran “has had to rely on China to offset the Western-induced isolation, predominantly championed by the United States,” said Arianne Tabatabai, an associate political scientist at the RAND Corp. who recently co-authored a book exploring Iran’s ties with China and Russia. “I think that what we’re going to see . is the return of a quasi-monopoly of key sectors of the Iranian economy by the Chinese.”

Trade and ties between China and Iran date back over 2,000 years to the ancient Silk Road caravan routes that brought the textile to Europe. Modern relations began under then-ruler Mohammad Reza Shah in 1971 after the Americans acknowledged Beijing’s Communist government. The 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew the shah caused ties to cool until the mid-1980s.

For China, Iran for years served as a crucial gas pump for its rapid economic growth. Up until 2012, Iran was China’s third-largest source of crude oil imports, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Then came sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program, sparked by the West’s fears…

Justin Welby told to resign after commenting on government issues

Most Rev Justin Welby told the TUC’s Congress Guide ahead of his speech at the group’s conference on Wednesday that the Church will form new partnerships with various unions and ensure that “oppressed” people are protected from “cruel employers”.

“Holding businesses to account and making sure the needs of people are put at the centre is vital,” he said. “Christian faith starts with knowing that each of us is loved by God and are of infinite value to God.“Therefore, the value of every human being is the same. Jesus was very practical about applying these values.”“The TUC grew out of the need to come together to defend vulnerable and oppressed workers against overmighty and cruel employers. It is one expression amongst many of what it means to value human beings and care for human dignity.”Archbishop Justin’s comments were met with some resistance. According to The Express, MP Phillip Davies said the archbishop should quit his role and join the Labour Party if he wants to comment on government affairs. Mr Davies said: “Justin Welby ought to consider removing his dog collar and replacing it with a Labour Party rosette.“No wonder church attendances are so poor – another member of the metropolitan Elite establishment out of touch with the silent majority.”

Weighing the Spiritual Cost When Saints Turn Out to Be Scoundrels

(RNS) — When Sarah Joy Hays learned in the summer of 2016 that her pastor in Baton Rouge, La., had been having an affair with another woman in their church — a woman who had been her spiritual mentor for many years — she was angry and confused.

“I got pregnant out of wedlock, and she was one of the first people I told,” Hays recalled. “She kind of pastored and mentored me through it.

“To find out she was actively involved in this affair throughout that — that’s where I had the hardest time, figuring out how to react to that. I was going through something that was very obvious, an ‘external sin.’ And she was in the same situation, essentially, but nobody knew.”

Both the pastor and the woman with whom he had an affair were disciplined by their denomination, and he was removed from the pastorate, Hays said.

Two years later, the small congregation has a new pastor, many members have taken advantage of periodic one-on-one and group counseling provided by their denomination, and some measure of healing has been achieved.

But Hays said she is still guarded spiritually. “It causes you to question any amount of wisdom and discernment from then on,” Hays said. “It helps determine trust and how you give away trust.”

Putin Says Russia Identified Suspects in Novichok Poisoning, Says There Is ‘Nothing Criminal’ About Them – Urban Christian News

President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia has identified the two men that Britain named as suspects in the poisoning of a former Russian spy, and that there is “nothing criminal” about them.

Britain last week charged two alleged agents of Russia’s military intelligence agency in absentia with the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. Britain blames the Russian government for the attack, a claim that Moscow has vehemently denied.

Speaking at a panel of an economic conference in Russia’s Far East Putin insisted they do not work for the military.

“We know who these people are, we have found them,” Putin said. “There is nothing special or criminal about it, I can assure you.”

Asked by the panel’s moderator if the men work for the military, Putin replied that they are “civilians” and called on the men to come forward.

“I would like to call on them so that they can hear us today: They should go to some media outlet. I hope they will come forward and tell about themselves.”

After the Skripals were poisoned March 4, Britain and more than two dozen other countries expelled a total of 150 Russian spies working under diplomatic cover. Russia kicked out a similar number of those countries’ envoys.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the use of a chemical weapon in the city of Salisbury, which left a British woman dead and four people, including Skripal and his daughter, seriously ill, was carried out by officers of the GRU intelligence service and almost certainly approved “at a senior level of the Russian…

Academic advantage of faith schools ‘short lived’

UCL’s Institute of Education used a sample of 10,000 people born in the same week in 1970 and assessed whether faith schools made an impact on their results at O-level, A-Level and University.

They found that there were only short-term academic advantages of Catholic schools and Church of England schools, up to O-Level, providing an equivalent of an extra third of an O-Level.

Professor Alice Sullivan, the study’s lead author, explained how background was a bigger influence than school: “Pupils who were raised in religious homes were more likely to succeed academically than those from non-religious backgrounds, whether they went to faith schools or not.”

The authors say this would explain why religious schools may sometimes do better, as their students are overwhelmingly from religious home lives.

For example, in the C of E schools attended by children in the study, half of the pupils had an Anglican upbringing, 20 per cent were ‘other Christian’, 9 per cent were Catholic, 3 per cent were of other faiths, leaving 19 per cent having no religious background.

Professor Sullivan added that this should change the perception held by some that faith schools automatically lead to a better education.

She said: “Past studies have claimed an advantage for faith schools, without accounting for the religious background of the pupils. This study suggests that that is a…

“A beast like no other”

This storm is a monster. It’s big and it’s vicious.” This is how North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper described Hurricane Florence, the most devastating storm to threaten the Carolinas in decades.

The National Weather Service states, “This will likely be the storm of a lifetime for portions of the Carolina coast.” CNN is warning this morning, “Even for a major hurricane, Florence is a beast like no other.”

It’s not too late for God to intervene. If Jesus could heal the sick, raise the dead, and calm a storm, he could turn Florence back to sea or otherwise prevent this disaster.

We should be praying fervently for him to do so, remembering that “you do not have, because you do not ask” (James 4:2 NRSV). As Gabriel told Mary, “Nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37).

But what if God doesn’t answer our prayers the way we want him to?

The worst thing we can do

If you had a child with cancer and your oncologist could cure her but chose not to, your outrage would obviously be justified. If God does not stop this hurricane from devastating cities along the Carolina coast, many will wonder why.

We could blame the Fall since our sin led to a broken world with hurricanes and other disasters (Romans 8:22). But God parted the Red Sea, stopped the flooded Jordan river, and calmed the stormy Sea of Galilee–all miracles that occurred in our fallen world.

We could blame the victims, remembering that God used natural disasters to judge the sins of Pharaoh and the Egyptians. But he sent Moses to warn them before the plagues began; I know of no prophetic warnings issued to those in North and South Carolina. Nor am I aware of any unique sinfulness that would make them a special target for divine judgment.

When disaster strikes, the worst thing we can do is to blame its victims. I had a dear friend in one of the churches I pastored who was dying of cancer. I asked her if some aspect of her experience was hardest. She replied, “It’s…

Bishops adopt international definition of antisemitism

They made the decision during the annual residential meeting of the College of Bishops, which is taking place in Oxford.

Their joint statement endorsing the IHRA definition on behalf of the Church includes all of its examples of antisemitism.

The bishops also called for everyone to reject using language that could cause “prejudice, stigma or hatred towards people on the grounds of their religion, culture, origins, identity or beliefs”.

Rt Rev David Walker, Bishop of Manchester said: “The Jewish community, among whom I live in Salford, carry with them the vivid memory and scars of the Holocaust; they know all too well that antisemitism is never far below the surface of our society.

“Today’s statement from the Church of England bishops assures them that we will continue to reject such prejudice and bigotry firmly, in line with our practice over 75 years.

“At the same time we will continue to speak out critically when governments here and elsewhere act in ways that our faith calls us to challenge.”

The Church of England’s interfaith team and national advisers already use the IHRA’s definition of antisemitism as the benchmark in their work and ministry.

However, the bishops noted the “necessity of making explicit” the Church’s adoption of, and adherence to, the definition.

Last week the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Rev Justin Welby, also spoke of…

Sex abuse scandal is Catholic Church’s own 9/11, says Vatican official

Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, an aide to both retired Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, told a book presentation that he by no means was comparing the scandal to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the US on September 11 2001.

But he said the years-long sex scandal, and recent revelations in a Pennsylvania grand jury report, showed “how many souls have been wounded irrevocably and mortally by priests from the Catholic Church”.

“Today, even the Catholic Church looks full of confusion at its own 9/11, at its own September 11, even though this catastrophe isn’t associated with a single date but rather at so many days and years, and innumerable victims,” he said.

While no one has attacked churches with planes full of passengers, Mr Gaenswein said, recent news from the US “sends a message that is even more terrible than the sudden collapse of all the churches of Pennsylvania together with the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington”.

Mr Gaenswein, who serves as secretary to Benedict and prefect of Francis’s papal household, was speaking at a presentation of a book by conservative American author Rod Dreher, who has been at the forefront in reporting on the recent scandal in the US over ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

Francis removed McCarrick as a cardinal in July following a credible accusation that he groped a teenage altar boy in…
