Chinese Police Investigate Sexual Misconduct Claims Against Buddhist Monk – Urban Christian News

Chinese police have opened an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against one of the country’s best-known Buddhist monks whose case has highlighted the growth of the #MeToo movement in China.

A statement issued by the State Religious Affairs Administration on Thursday said police were investigating claims of sexual assault by Xuecheng. It said he also faces censure from the official government-backed Buddhist Association on suspicion of “violating Buddhist precepts.”

Xuecheng has denied the claims but earlier this month resigned as head of the Buddhist Association.

Thomas Cook Evacuates All Its Customers From Egyptian Hotel After Woman, 63, ‘Dies From Grief’ Hours After Her Husband, 69, Was Killed by a Heart Attack During Their ‘Holiday of a Lifetime’ There

Thomas Cook has removed all its customers from a hotel in Egypt where one of its employees ‘died of grief’  – hours after her husband was killed by a heart attack on a ‘trip of a lifetime’ holiday.

Susan Cooper, 63, and her husband John Cooper, 69, were on a Thomas Cook holiday at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic hotel in the Red Sea resort town of Hurghada.

Mr Cooper, who ran his own building company in their hometown of Burnley, Lancashire had a heart attack and was rushed to hospital where he died on Tuesday.

Mrs Cooper, a long-serving Thomas Cook employee, died ‘of grief’ just hours later, said Dr Maged Eledawy, the head of Hurghada Hospital.

Thomas Cook said in a statement: ‘We are deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of two of our customers who were staying in the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in Hurghada, Egypt. The circumstances of their deaths are still unclear. We have also received further reports of a raised level of illness among guests. Safety is always our first priority, so as a precautionary measure we have taken a decision to remove all our customers from this hotel.

‘We will be offering customers alternative hotels within Hurghada, as well as giving them the option to return home. For those customers who choose to come home, we have made arrangements to fly them back tomorrow, 24 August. While we understand this is upsetting for those on holiday, we believe this is the right thing to do.’

We continue to work closely with the hotel and are supporting the authorities with their investigations. The Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel was last…

Pastor Scott Lively Exonerated by US Court of Appeals

According to CBN, the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit exonerated Pastor Scott Lively of Springfield, MA last week. In June 2017, an appeal was filed by the Liberty Counsel on behalf of Lively after he won a summary judgement against an LGBT activist group called the Sexual Minorities of Uganda (SMUG).

In 2012 Lively was sued by SMUG for sharing his views on homosexuality during several visits to Uganda in 2002 and 2009.

SMUG accused Lively of “international crimes against humanity,” citing the Alien Tort Statute (ATS) to give them legal backing to file suit. In 2013, however, the US Supreme Court verified that that the ATS was not put in place to allow foreign citizens to sue US citizens. Instead of dismissing the case, CBN reports, that the US District Judge Michael A. Ponser allowed SMUG to continue their litigation. The litigation went on for a grueling four years, but SMUG was unable to provide any evidence to prove Lively was guilty. SMUG did, however, provide evidence that showed that Lively encouraged respectful and dignified treatment toward the LGBTQ+ community.

Eventually, Posner dismissed the case in 2017, but not without offering his opinion of Lively during the ruling saying, Lively’s efforts and writings against the LGBT community was “odious” and “crackpot bigotry.”

In an effort to continue their litigation, SMUG tried to use the judge’s ruling to continue litigation in other courts. CBN reports, the pastor went on to appeal his win to have the judge’s statements taken out of the records.

Judge Bruce M. Selya of the appeals…

Beer Church Donates to Planned Parenthood; Pastor Says Jesus Killed By White Supremacy

(Photo: Screengrab, NowThis Facebook Page)Christopher VanHall, pastor of Greater Purpose Community Church, Santa Cruz, California.

The pastor of a progressive church where beer is served during services says that Christ was killed by white supremacy, and portions of funds given to his church will benefit abortion giant Planned Parenthood.

Christopher VanHall, who pastors Greater Purpose Community Church, which holds services in a local food lounge in Santa Cruz, California, will soon be opening a brewery and restaurant they converted from an old bookstore. Sunday services will also be occurring there.

“What would it look like to be a church that looked like the movement that Jesus started and not like the church that we know in America today? Out of that consistent questioning came this model for a brewery church that generates funds for local charities,” VanHall said in a video interview for NowThis Tuesday.

He further explained that they are environmentalists and openly LGBT-affirming, and are anti-war and feminists as “Jesus was, too.”

“We are all for racial justice, which Jesus was a Palestinian, Jewish rabbi, he was a person of color that was killed by white supremacy so we’re usually making every effort to be on the front lines for racial justice. So that’s what…

China Is Holding Minority Uighurs in Re-Education Camps, and Chinese Business Is Keeping Much of the World Silent – Urban Christian News

A layer of secrecy shrouds the Chinese government’s clampdown on Muslim ethnic minorities in the region of Xinjiang. Authorities continue to deny the existence of re-education camps there and punish anyone who speaks out publicly about them. Some citizens of Kazakhstan have been detained in the crackdown, and released Kazakhs are one of the only sources of information about what is going on inside the camps.

Since 2016, the government has transformed the region into a dystopian surveillance state with cameras and checkpoints covering the cities, residents tasked with spying on their neighbors, and police throwing Uighur men into re-education camps, where they are brainwashed and tortured. Left-behind wives and mothers don’t know where their husbands and sons are held and whether they are alive.

The international community has done little to call China out on its actions: Isa noted most Muslim countries were reluctant to raise the issue with China because of their dependence on Chinese investments. Western democracies have also remained largely unconcerned, save for a few voices calling for their leaders to press President Xi Jinping on the internment of Uighurs before it escalates into an ethnic cleansing.

BORDERING KAZAKHSTAN AND MONGOLIA, Xinjiang is strategically important to China as it holds a third of the country’s natural gas and oil reserves and is situated on the historic Silk Road, which China aims to revive with its recent Belt and Road Initiative. Yet the 11 million Uighurs living in the area have long bristled at China’s heavy-handed attempts at assimilation,…

The Surprising Ways the Bible Impacts Modern Culture

Expand | Collapse
(Photo: Thomas Nelson, Inc.)

How much does the Bible influence pop culture and modern-day life? Some people might be shocked to discover the sweeping influence that Scripture has on film, TV, music, Broadway, and even our daily sayings and proclamations. A trip to the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., offers some insight into the Bible’s unparalleled influence.

Ilena Madraso, content manager at the Museum of the Bible, recently told PureFlix.com’s “Pure Talk” that it is “kind of surprising” to see references to Scripture deeply embedded in our modern culture.

“The Bible has had such a large influence on so much of the world,” Madraso said.

She explained that the museum’s “Bible in the World” exhibit offers a lens into the widespread influence, with the exhibit promising to “give guests an unprecedented look at the Bible’s impact on culture worldwide.”

Watch Madraso explain the fascinating ways the Bible is impacting culture:

Madraso said that the exhibit sheds light on the Bible’s influence on literature, art, stage, and screen, with some surprising elements that show where Scripture references are hidden in plain sight.

“You wouldn’t think it was the Bible, and then it hits you,” she said.

From ex-NFL star Tim Tebow’s famous eye black featuring “John 3:16” to more random connections such as model Heidi Klum’s decision to dress like an apple and serpent for Halloween — a clear reference to the Adam and Eve narrative in Genesis — the museum showcases where the Bible and culture have intersected.

Fmr. Willow Creek Lead Teaching Pastor Steve Carter Backing Campaign for Church Sex Abuse Survivors

(Photo: Courtesy of Willow Creek Church)Volunteers at Willow Creek Community Church of South Barrington, Illinois, hold up care packages made for prisoners for Christmas, December 6, 2015.

Steve Carter, the now former lead teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church, has said that he’s backing a campaign raising money for church and clergy abuse survivors.

Carter wrote on his blog last week following his resignation in the unfolding scandal concerning founder and former senior pastor Bill Hybels that he trusts that God “has a plan for Willow.”

“Willow Creek, as you humbly seek Christ to restore and forge your future, this pastor who once called Willow home is praying for you and cheering you on,” Carter said.

“The kindness we have received has been overwhelming and has prompted us to find a way to extend that love and support to others,” he added, speaking of his family.

“To this end, we feel called to lift up this grassroots campaign focused on creating scholarship programs for those who have survived church and clergy abuse. Its aim is to provide survivors with access to therapy, mental health resources, and safe spaces to heal,” he added.

The campaign in question is titled “We Believe You,” and says that it is aimed at standing with the “brave individuals” who have…

Some Poorer Nations Are Growing Wary of Generous Chinese Investments – Urban Christian News

During a five-day trip to Beijing this week, the prime minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, took a strong stance against further Chinese investment in the Southeast Asian nation, canceling $22 billion worth of China-backed infrastructure projects. Malaysia is the latest country to adopt a cautious view of generous Chinese investments as poor countries fall into China’s debt trap.

“We do not want a situation where there is a new version of colonialism happening because poor countries are unable to compete with rich countries,” the 93-year-old Mahathir said on Monday after meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Mahathir’s predecessor, Najib Razak, led Malaysia into $250 billion worth of debt. Najib had eagerly agreed to projects financed and built by China, including a deep-water port, a renovated harbor, a rail network, and four artificial islands. Mahathir after winning the May elections quickly halted two major Chinese projects in order to start pulling the country out of the red.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative aims to invest up to $8 trillion in 68 countries to create a network of transportation, energy, and telecommunication infrastructure across Asia, Europe, and Africa. While cash-strapped countries initially cheered the inflow of Chinese cash, some are seeing their infrastructure fall into Chinese hands after they are unable to pay back the loans.

Take, for instance, Sri Lanka. Under the former pro-China President Mahinda Rajapaksa, China provided Sri Lanka hundreds of millions of dollars in loans to build the largely useless…

(Photo: Saddleback Church)Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren addresses the Purpose Driven Conference, which took place on June 28-30, 2016. The theme was “New Hope for Your Church.”

A former youth mentor at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California was convicted by a jury Wednesday of molesting twin teenage boys.

Thirty-three-year-old Ruven (Ruben) Meulenberg was convicted of two counts of lewd acts with a minor younger than 14 and three counts of lewd acts on children 14 or 15 in an Orange county court, according to the City News Service.

Meulenberg, who the church claims as only a volunteer, was accused of committing the molestations between May 2016 and May 2017 against the twin brothers he mentored at Saddleback Church Youth Center. The actions allegedly occurred both on and off of church property.

Deputy District Attorney Courtney Thom reportedly described for jurors earlier this month an incident that happened when Meulenberg took the twin brothers to a movie theatre. The youth mentor is said to have encouraged one of the boys to sit on his lap and proceeded to kiss the 14-year-old boy on the on the head, cheek and mouth.

Meulenberg allegedly asked the boy to switch seats…
