If ever you needed proof that Christianity is under attack, this Bible billboard controversy is it. Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Southern California was forced to remove his billboard ads at local malls, all because he was shown holding a Bible!

Each year, for nearly 30 years, SoCal Harvest hosts a crusade. And Pastor Greg Laurie wanted to get the word out about the church’s free, 3-night event. So, he contacted a local billboard company to buy some advertising space in malls around the area.

The ads were up for about two weeks when the billboard company asked Pastor Greg to revise them.

“There was nothing overtly religious about it [the billboard image],” said John Collins, Harvest executive director.

In fact, with no markings on the Bible Greg held in the ad, it could really be any book. Yet, the billboard company reportedly received multiple complaints and one “serious threat” from folks finding the Bible “offensive.”

The Harvest team wanted to be good sports, so they changed the ad. They removed the Bible completely and simplified the billboard, so it just listed the dates and musical acts appearing.But apparently, the complaints continued. The company wound up removing the billboards completely and refunding Harvest their money.

According to The Washington Post, the White House made an announcement on Tuesday saying that it was deporting 95-year-old Jakiw Palij, who is a former Nazi camp guard.  

Around six million Jews and other Nazi adversaries were killed as a result of the Holocaust and this year marked the 73^rdanniversary since the camps were liberated. Thousands of Nazis and Nazi sympathizers have gone without consequences, but recently the number of people going to trial for these war crimes has risen. 

Before Nazi Germany was liberated by the Allies, tens of thousands of Nazi criminals disappeared and went into hiding. Some perpetrators left the country, some left the continent, and others elected to hide in German cities. 

On Tuesday, Palij, who was Polish born, was sent to Germany, and according to the Washington Post, the White House stated that Palij was the last known alleged former Nazi guard living in the United States. 

According to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Palij, who was living in Queens, New York, was arrested for his crimes on Monday and sent to Germany early Tuesday morning. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper in Germany reported that Palij was moved to a nursing home upon arrival.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States, has installed its first female African-American bishop.

The Rev. Viviane E. Thomas-Breitfeld was officially made bishop of the ELCA’s South-Central Synod of Wisconsin at a service held Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Janesville.

According to an announcement about the installation service, social justice was a major theme of the proceedings, emphasizing Micah 6:8, “To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

In keeping with the social justice theme, Thomas-Breitfeld said in a statement last month that as bishop she wants to pursue a greater welcome toward many different groups.

“I hope I can help the synod become more open to change, so we can become more relevant to all, especially people of color, LGBTQI, and young adults, many of whom are choosing to not attend church,” stated Thomas-Breitfeld.

Instinctively we all feel that human life matters. We cringe when we hear of a new act of violence. We are horrified when we read of crippling poverty. We want to help the least fortunate. But why? What is it about humanity that matters? 

I believe the Christian story gives us the richest, fullest expression of what it means to be human. This is especially important in an age when people are asking what this means and, in an age, when human dignity is assaulted through war, famine, violence, abortion, racism and other sins. Christians should care about human dignity. Here are five reasons why:

1. 
   The Bible gives a rich description of what it means to be human. The opening pages of Scripture make the radical declaration that, of all of God’s beautiful creation, we are his most prized creation. Moses takes great care to describe the way God crafted humans from the dust of the ground and breathed into humans the breath of life. And David, in Psalm 139, describes the intricate way in which God’s crafts every human life in the womb. 
2. 
   God has created each human in his image for his glory. Genesis tells us that humans reflect God. We were created after his image. This means humans have intrinsic value and worth. Humans were made by God with purpose, to both imitate him by ruling over creation and filling the earth with his glory.
