Passenger Who Fell Off Cruise Ship Treaded Water for 10 Hours Before Rescue – Urban Christian News

A passenger who fell off a cruise ship near the coast of Croatia treaded water for 10 hours before her rescue.

The 46-year-old British woman, Kay Longstaff, fell off a Norwegian Cruise Line ship around midnight Saturday, plunging into the Adriatic Sea. She told Croatian news channel HRT that she was sitting at the back of the deck before the fall. She was roughly 60 miles away from the Croatian coast.

Longstaff floated and sang to stay awake, rescuers said. The Croatian Coast Guard launched an air and sea search early Sunday morning.

She was rescued by the Croatian coast guard 10 hours after her fall on Sunday and taken to a hospital in the town of Pula. Longstaff was released from the hospital on Monday.

Why American Jewish Giving to Israel Is Losing Ground – Urban Christian News

American Jews donate at high levels to charity. One way they support causes in the U.S., Israel and other places is collective, often through large grant-making organizations.

In researching this organized philanthropy, I’ve observed that the proportion of Jewish institutional giving to Israeli causes has fallen since 2009. I believe that several factors, including demographic and social changes, a diminishing perception of Israel as being in need and concerns over the Palestinian-Israeli conflict have probably been driving this decline for years.

More recently, Israel’s increasingly conservative policies on social and religious issues, which are often at odds with what most American Jews support, might also be playing a role.

Muslim Pilgrims Gather at Mount Arafat for Pinnacle of Hajj – Urban Christian News

Some 2 million Muslim pilgrims gathered on Monday in the valley of Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia for a day of prayer that marks the pinnacle of the annual hajj.

Pilgrims stood shoulder to shoulder for an emotional day of repentance and supplication at the site Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon, calling for equality and for Muslims to unite. According to the hadiths, traditional collections of the prophet’s sayings and anecdotes about his life, Muhammad also reminded his followers of women’s rights and that every Muslim life and property is sacred.

Muslims believe prayer on this day at Mount Arafat, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the holy city of Mecca, is their best chance to erase past sins and start anew.

United Methodist Latino Caucus Backs Plan to Soften Church’s Stance Against Homosexual Acts

(Photo: Facebook/MARCHA – Metodistas Asociados Representando la Causa Hispano Americana)A logo for the Metodistas Asociados Representando la Causa Hispano Americana (Methodists Associated Representing the Cause of Hispanic/Latino Americans), the Latino Caucus for the United Methodist Church.

The United Methodist Church’s Latino-Hispanic caucus has endorsed a plan that would remove the denomination-wide position against homosexual acts and gay marriage.

The UMC will hold a special session of General Conference next February to determine what their official position will be on LGBT issues, as the debate has threatened to schism the mainline denomination.

At their assembly held earlier this month, Methodists Associated Representing the Cause of Hispanic/Latino Americans (MARCHA) voted 42-16 in favor of a resolution expressing support for the proposal, known as the “One Church Plan.”

The Reverend Eunice Vega,…

Australia Blocks Euthanasia in Its Territories – Urban Christian News

The Australian Senate came within two votes last week of allowing its territories to legalize euthanasia, but multiple lawmakers changed their minds at the last minute.

The bill would have erased a 1997 law prohibiting Australia’s territories from allowing euthanasia. Sen. Steve Martin, one of at least three Liberal Party senators to swing the vote 36-34 against the bill, said his conscience would not allow him to support the bill “without ensuring that appropriate safeguards were in place,” The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Last year, Victoria became the first Australian state to legalize euthanasia, shortly after New South Wales narrowly avoided it. But the 10 territories, over which the federal government has more oversight and control, have been barred from legalizing euthanasia since Parliament reversed the Northern Territory’s 1995 law allowing it.

Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, told me that a vote in favor of the bill would have made the legalization of euthanasia “almost automatic” in the Northern Territory.

“I think in the end, they had to make a decision, if we do this, if we vote this way, it essentially meant that the Northern Territory would once again allow euthanasia,” he said.

The Australian Capital Territory could also have legalized it. Catholic Health Australia CEO Suzanne Greenwood told Sight news this month that the dearth of palliative care specialists in the country made the bill dangerous. She cited recent data that showed only four specialists serve the 244,500 people in the vast…

(Photo: Facebook; Trulia)Paula Scarlett-Brown (R) and the $ 2.5 million home located in Flatbush, Brooklyn, owned by Pilgrim Church.

NEW YORK — The widow of Pilgrim Assemblies International, Inc. founder Archbishop Roy E. Brown is being evicted by the church her husband led for decades and her family claims she could become “homeless.”

Brown, who led Pilgrim Church in Brooklyn, New York, for decades before his death in June, was hailed by civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton as “a Pentecostal Church giant” on his passing.

Nevertheless, Paula Scarlett-Brown was recently given a 10-day notice to vacate a $2.5 million home located in Flatbush, Brooklyn, by Pilgrim Baptist Church.

“Please take notice, that the Owner and Landlord, Pilgrim Baptist Church, INC., is entitled to immediate possession of the premises known as and located at 1721 Ditmas Avenue, Brooklyn, New York (the ‘Premises’) based on the fact that the person who had a license to live on the Premises, Roy E. Brown, died and such license expired upon his death,” the notice, dated Aug. 15, said.

“Any and all license, if any, given to Paula Scarlett-Brown to occupy the premises by Roy E. Brown, the deceased holder of the license, has expired and terminated by virtue of death of Roy E. Brown. Your occupancy of…

Pope Francis Speaks Out about Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report

Pope Francis Speaks Out about Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report

In a letter to all Catholics, Pope Francis condemned what he called the “crime” of sexual abuse and cover-ups of those crimes.

“With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives,” Francis wrote.

“We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them.”

The pope’s letter comes a week after a Pennsylvania grand jury released a 900-page report about sexual abuse by clergy. The report reviewed Catholic church records of some 1,000 victims who claimed to have been abused by about 300 priest over the span of 80 years in Pennsylvania.

The report said that victims were both boys and girls, from prepubescent children to teenagers, “”But all of them were brushed aside, in every part of the state, by church leaders who preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all.”

The letter also comes after news broke that a cardinal, retired archbishop of Washington Theodore McCarrick, allegedly sexually abused and harassed minors and adult seminarians.

Francis said in his letter that “no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated.”

“While it is…

9,200 Make Decisions for Christ at Greg Laurie’s SoCal Harvest Amid Billboard Controversy

(Photo: Harvest Crusades)Thousands take to the field to answer the invitation to profess their faith in Christ at Greg Laurie’s 2018 Southern California Harvest at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on Aug. 18, 2018.

Over 9,000 people made professions of faith at evangelist Greg Laurie’s Southern California Harvest this past weekend even after billboards advertising the event were taken down over complaints about the Bible.

In its 29th year, SoCal Harvest went off without a hitch at Angel Stadium in Anaheim as over 100,000 people attended the three-night evangelism crusade and were treated to performances from top Christian music stars, stunts by motocross riders and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

However, the staple event of Laurie’s Harvest Ministries faced some resistance in the weeks leading up after billboards promoting the event were removed because they featured Laurie holding up a Bible.

In response, Laurie called on attendees to bring their Bibles in order to devote time each night for everyone to hold up the holy book and proclaim their belief in the Word of God.

Cathedral defends ‘inappropriate’ movie screenings

Two horror movies are set to be shown as part of the QUAD in Residence series.

A local cinema is using the church for a number of screenings starting with The Wicker Man and Don’t Look Now.

The films include a graphic sex scene, full female nudity and a Pagan sacrifice.

A number of local churchgoers have questioned the decision to show the movies.

But speaking to the BBC, the Cathedral’s Dean said the films won’t be “showing God anything that he hasn’t seen before”.

He also said in a statement to Premier: “We are looking forward to welcoming all those who want to enjoy these diverse special screenings and my hope is that it will encourage the people of Derby and Derbyshire to discover their Cathedral.

“Not all the films will be to everyone’s taste and some of them will provoke comment and engagement with serious issues, which is to be encouraged.

“For example, as well being a great film and example of superb story-telling, The Wicker Man is the story of a Christian martyr.

“Every culture tells stories to help it think about what it believes, and one of the primary ways our culture does this is through film.

“I believe people will be helped to think in relation to some powerful and sometimes disturbing movies, and the screenings will help to release other much-needed resources for the mission and ministry of the Cathedral in the city.”

Stay up to date with the…

Chelsea Clinton Claims that Abortion Added $3.5 Trillion to the Economy

Chelsea Clinton Claims that Abortion Added $3.5 Trillion to the Economy

Chelsea Clinton created a controversy last week by arguing that abortion has been good for women’s economic progress. She made the comments at a “Rise Up for Row” event in New York. The “Rise Up for Row” movement began after President Trump announced his appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to fill Anthony Kennedy’s seat on the Supreme Court.

Her comments came as she speculated about arguments that appeals to the economic benefits abortion could get pro-life Americans to reevaluate their opposition to Roe v. Wade. She told the audience: “Whether you fundamentally care about reproductive rights and access rights, because these are not the same thing, if you care about social justice or economic justice, – you have to care about this. It is not a disconnected fact – to address this t-shirt of 1973 – that American women entering the labor force from 1973 to 2009 added three and a half trillion dollars to our economy. Right? The net, new entrance of women – that is not disconnected from the fact that Roe became the law of the land in January of 1973… So, I think, whatever it is that people say they care about, I think that you can connect to this issue.”

Pro-life advocates pounced on Clinton’s comments as an example of the pro-choice lobby’s indifference to human life. In a series of tweets, Evangelist Franklin Graham responded to Clinton, arguing that…
