Seeds of Destiny 11 August 2018: The Dangers of Strife and Bitterness

Topic: The Dangers of Strife and Bitterness [Seeds of Destiny 11 August 2018 Daily Devotional]

Scripture: Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Thought For The Day: Progress is arrested when strife is in place

One of the deadly enemies of destiny is the lifestyle of strife and bitterness. This also refers to competitive jealousy and comparison. Lot entered into strife with his uncle, Abraham who brought him out of obscurity. Absalom also strove with his father, David. Both Lot and Absalom ended in disaster.

Now, I will like you to take note of the following:
i) Progress is arrested when strife is in place
You stop moving forward in life when you agree to strive with your neighbour.

ii) Focus is distracted where strife is established
Whenever you agree to strive with someone, your focus is distracted; another person’s success becomes your focus when strife is in place and where there is no focus, disaster is inevitable.

iii) Competition equals limitation
You cannot become who you are meant to be if your focus is to undo, overdo or outdo someone else.

iv) The Presence of strife is the absence of God
The presence of strife equals the presence of hate because you do not strive with someone you love; and the presence of hate is the absence of God. So, anyone that strives with his neighbour and hates him has eliminated God from his life because God is love (1 John 4:8).

Beloved, my counsel is: deliver yourself from the lifestyle of strife because strife is a killer of joy, and your joy is necessary for your destiny fulfilment.
You cannot be joyful when you are in bitterness and jealousy.

Remember this: Progress is arrested when strife is in place.

Assignments:
1. Avoid the lifestyle of strife, envy, competition and hatred.
2. Be contented with what you have while working and trusting God for more, and live in love with everyone.

Prayer: O LORD, deliver me from the lifestyle of competition, comparison, strife and hatred. Help me to live in contentment and love, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

School Eliminates Pledge of Allegiance to Unite Parents, Then Changes Course

School Eliminates Pledge of Allegiance to Unite Parents, Then Changes Course

An Atlanta school eliminated the Pledge of Allegiance from its morning agenda, but then reversed course when parents spoke up.

Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School announced the original plan earlier this week in a letter from elementary campus principal Lara Zelski, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The morning Pledge had been recited when parents, students and staff were gathered together.

The school had eliminated the Pledge “in an effort to begin our day as a fully inclusive and connected community,” Zelski wrote.

“Over the past couple of years it has become increasingly obvious that more and more of our community were choosing to not stand and/or recite the pledge,” Zelski wrote.

The Pledge would have been recited among students later in the day when parents were not in the building.

But after the newspaper reported on the elimination of the Pledge, and a backlash followed, the school changed the policy back to the original model.

Zelski had said there were mixed opinions about the Pledge among the school community.

“There are many emotions around this and we want everyone in our school family to start their day in a positive manner,” she wrote. “After all, that is the whole purpose of our morning meeting.”

FAU’s Lane Kiffin Talks New Christian Faith: It’s ‘Never Too Late to Rediscover God’

FAU’s Lane Kiffin Talks New Christian Faith: It’s ‘Never Too Late to Rediscover God’

Lane Kiffin has built his reputation as a confident, outspoken football coach that some fans like to hate, but in a new column for Athletes for God he describes how he has been humbled – and has found Christ.

Kiffin was head coach of the Oakland Raiders prior to a one-year stint at Tennessee and then a short career at Southern Cal (USC), which fired him after a loss at Arizona State.

“I was pulled off my team bus, in front of the players at the airport at 3 a.m. to be told I had been fired hours earlier,” Kiffin wrote. “I don’t wish that feeling upon anyone. I wanted to die, because at the time I was defined by my job.”

But God had other plans for him.

“Just when I needed Him, God answered in a big way,” Kiffin wrote. “I don’t know if God is a sports fan or not, but I do know this: He loves a good comeback.”

A few years earlier, Tennessee chaplain Roger Woods had given Kiffin a copy of Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. It had a big impact.

“On the first page were four words that changed my life,” Kiffin wrote. “’It’s not about you.’ “That’s all Rick Warren needed to say. It immediately sunk in, and I’ve been telling my players and coworkers that line ever since. I had never heard that before but that is the purpose of life.”

Kiffin believes he had “too much success, fame and money in…

Jeff Sessions Cleared in Church Complaint, Perplexing Some Top Methodists

Jeff Sessions Cleared in Church Complaint, Perplexing Some Top Methodists

United Methodist Church officials in Alabama have dismissed a complaint signed by more than 600 church members in July that chided Attorney General Jeff Sessions for implementing the family separation policy along the border and attempting to justify it with Scripture.

But the logic of the decision, which cited a distinction between personal behavior and the actions of public officials, is not sitting well with some Methodist leaders.

The formal dismissal of the complaint by the Rev. Debora Bishop, district superintendent of the Alabama-West Florida UMC Conference, where Sessions’ home church resides, came in a letter on July 30. It amounts to a final decision on the charges of child abuse, immorality, racial discrimination and “dissemination of doctrines contrary to the standards of doctrine of the United Methodist Church.”

Open Heavens 11 August 2018 – Your Help Comes from the Lord

Topic: Your Help Comes from the Lord [Open Heavens 11 August 2018 Saturday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”- Psalm 121:1

Read: 2 Kings 6:25-27 (KJV)

25 And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

26 And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.

27 And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?

Bible in One Year: Job 33-35, Matthew 18:1-20

Open Heavens 11 August 2018 MESSAGE:

An African adage says that it is not wise to weep in the presence of a person who has no capacity to console you. It is a waste of time and energy to shed your tears at a place where they will not give any help in your favor. The Holy Spirit provides direction to genuine seekers of true help on where to get help. In Psalm 121:2, He says:

“My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”

Those who have been seeking help where there is none will be wise to heed these words. Concerning such people, Isaiah 31:1 says:

“Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!”

There was once a serious famine in Samaria, such that women started killing their own children for food. As the king of Israel walked by on the wall of the city on a certain day, a woman saw him and cried out to him for help. The king’s response to her is a great lesson you must take to heart today. In 2 Kings 6:27b, he said:

“…If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee?”

What an eternal truth this is! Beloved, in your Christian walk, you must develop to a point where you can say, “My God is more than able to help me; if He will not help me, nobody else can.” This was the stand taken by the three Hebrew boys in Babylon. In Daniel 3:16b-18, they said to King Nebuchadnezzar:

“…O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”

You need to come to terms with two truths today. First and foremost, the almighty God is the Help that is very much present in the time of need (Psalm 46:1). Secondly, if the Almighty God cannot help you in your adversity, no “mighty man” or devil can help you. When the Lord sees that you consider Him to be your only source of help, He will arise for you speedily. I pray for you that the Almighty God will help you in the day of adversity, and you shall not be ashamed in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point: Father, please send your help to me today in Jesus’ Name.

Open Heavens 11 August 2018 Hymn 11: O God Our Help In Ages Past

1. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the op’ning day.

6. O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Be Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our eternal home.

Willow Creek Leadership Summit Goes on Despite Mass Resignations

Willow Creek Leadership Summit Goes on Despite Mass Resignations

SOUTH BARRINGTON, Ill. (RNS) — The Global Leadership Summit at Willow Creek Community Church began Thursday (Aug. 9) morning by addressing the elephant in the room: Its opening speaker was not the event’s accustomed headliner for 26 years, church founder Bill Hybels.

Instead, Craig Groeschel, senior pastor at Life Church, which meets across the country and online, opened the conference. He began by talking about why he had not backed out of his speaker’s slot despite a still-unfolding sexual harassment scandal that forced Hybels to step down from Willow Creek and that, just 12 hours before the summit’s start, prompted the mass resignation of the church’s board of elders and its lead pastor.

The leadership summit has long showcased Willow Creek’s success and the man who engineered its growth from a neighborhood house church to a 13,000-member, multicampus behemoth. Hybels’ conversational preaching, sharp marketing sense and charisma made the summit popular beyond those interested in copying his church building methods. Past speakers have included former President Bill Clinton and the U2 rocker Bono.

But in April, Hybels stepped down months ahead of his planned retirement, after a Chicago Tribune investigation revealed allegations against him of inappropriate behavior with women. Four speakers, including actor Denzel Washington, pulled out of this year’s…

Willow Creek Association President Apologizes for ‘Missteps, Mistakes, Slip-Ups’ in Hybels Scandal

(Photo: Facebook)Willow Creek Association president, Tom De Vries, addresses Global leaders.

Willow Creek Association President Tom De Vries apologized Thursday at the Global Leadership Summit for the “missteps, mistakes, slip-ups, blunders” made in not condemning sooner the alleged actions of Willow Creek Community Church founder Bill Hybels.

De Vries also encouraged leadership partners to help build constructive dialogue in charting a path forward.

On April 10, after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, Hybels resigned as pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois, and from his position as chair of the board of directors of the Willow Creek Association which produces the annual Global Leadership Summit.

In a statement described as a “family conversation” at the start of the summit at the megachurch Thursday, De Vries reiterated that Hybels’ connection to the organization since his resignation had been severed and admitted “we could and should have done better.”

“Bill’s engagement with the summit and the Willow Creek Association has been severed,” he said.

“There is no map for the journey we’ve been on. We’ve had missteps, mistakes, slip-ups, blunders not condemning Bills actions to a greater degree and more publicly; not showing…
