Viral Hot Water Challenge Leaves Teen With Burns

Viral Hot Water Challenge Leaves Teen With Burns

Every day it seems like there’s some new online challenge getting our teenagers’ attention. Some are fun and harmless, like dance-offs. Others can cause serious injury to our children. Here’s what you need to know about the Hot Water Challenge, a new, viral danger causing severe burns in the real world.

You may recall that not too long ago, teens were poisoning themselves when trying to eat detergent pods for the Tide Pod Challenge. Well now, we’ve got a whole new danger with the Hot Water Challenge.

This prank calls for throwing hot or boiling water onto an unsuspecting person, often when they are sleeping. It certainly seems like common sense would be enough to avoid this challenge. But it’s alarming how many teens are participating.

15-year-old Kyland Clark is speaking out, after becoming one of the unsuspecting victims of the Hot Water Challenge. And this prank left him with second-degree burns.

Kyland was visiting a friend when he fell asleep. Shortly before he did, the boys had been looking online at videos of the Hot Water Challenge. And while Kyland slept, his friend decided to pull the prank on him.

Kyland’s friend heated up water in the microwave. He then tossed it onto Kyland’s body as he slept. Kyland had to go to the hospital, where he spent a week being treated for burns to his face, chest, back, neck, and arms.

His mom was frantic when the call came in…

Open Heavens 10 August 2018 – Suffering as a Criminal?

Topic: Suffering as a Criminal? [Open Heavens 10 August 2018 Friday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.”- 1 Peter 4:15

Read: Romans 13:1-8 (KJV)

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

Bible in One Year: Job 30-32, Matthew 17

Open Heavens 10 August 2018 MESSAGE:

“Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”John 14:30

This declaration made by our Lord Jesus Christ shortly before going to the cross is very profound and significant to what He came to do for humanity. Prior to making this statement, in John 8:46 He also threw this challenge to the religious leaders of His time:

“Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?”

Without these credentials, our Savior would not have been qualified to redeem us. Glory be to God, we have a Redeemer who is without sin.

The early disciples were first called “Christians” in Antioch because they lived like Christ after being taught His ways (Acts 11:26). This is what the Lord expects from us today. As seen in today’s memory verse, it should not even be mentioned among us that one of us is suffering as a result of criminal acts. This is very important for us to note because some Christians think that they are born-again into lawlessness. This is a wrong idea of our liberty in Christ. The Bible says Christian should be law-abiding. It is an aberration when Christians are accused of tax evasion. Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us a perfect example in this regard when He paid His due taxes (Matthew 17:24-27). We should therefore learn from the Master. How would it have been if Jesus was genuinely found guilty of the offences cooked up against Him (Luke 23:4)? He would have been disqualified from carrying out the work of redemption, and we would still be in our sins today.

In today’s Bible reading, we are admonished by Paul to obey higher powers. His understanding of God was so profound that he knew that no person could come into power without God assenting to it. If God installs a government for reasons best known to Him, disobeying such a government in civil matters would amount to disobeying God. As a matter of fact, our leaders are described as ministers of God ordained for own for good. For us to live peaceably in this world, let us therefore heed this warning in Romans 13:4-5:

“4…But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

Prayer Point: Father, please give me the wisdom to give what belongs to Caesar to Caesar, and help me not to withhold what belongs to You from You, in Jesus Name.

Open Heavens 10 August 2018 Hymn 4: Trust and Obey

1. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus:
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

ERLC Apologizes for Video Equating Animals to Unborn Humans, Vows It Won’t Happen Again

Pixabay/DesignerTalkA cow similar to this one, except dead and stuff, is currently on display hanging from a ceiling of a restaurant in Adelaide, Australia.

The Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission has issued an apology for posting a video comparing animals to unborn babies, saying “only humans are created in the image of God.”

As the convention’s public policy arm often posts videos to help guide viewers on different moral issues of the day, the ERLC posted a 50-second video last week that featured Fordham University theology professor Charles Camosy.

Camosy, who has previously argued that Christians should become vegans, stated in the video that “nonhuman” animals “merit our serious attention” and went onto to equate mistreated animals to unborn human babies in danger of being aborted.

According to the Washington Post, Camosy stated:

“[Animals are] also vulnerable. They’re also voiceless. They also are pushed to…

IDF Says War in Gaza Is Approaching and Communities Near Strip Could Be Evacuated – Urban Christian News

A senior army official warned Thursday morning that Israel was nearing a full-blown military confrontation in the Gaza Strip after hundreds of rockets were launched overnight by Palestinian terror groups, adding that the government could begin evacuating communities near the coastal enclave in preparation.

“We are rapidly nearing a confrontation,” the IDF senior officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Hamas is making serious mistakes, and we may have to make it clear after four years that this path doesn’t yield any results for it and isn’t worth it.”

Authorities said over 150 rockets and mortar shells were launched at Israeli communities since Wednesday evening. The barrages by the Hamas terror group continued throughout the night and into Thursday.

According to IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, at least seven people in total were injured in southern Israel by the Gaza rocket attacks, including a woman who was seriously injured when a projectile struck her home in the Eshkol region of southern Israel.

In response to the attacks, the Israeli army said, it struck over 140 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip overnight.

The military said its raids targeted training compounds as well as weapons-manufacturing facilities and storage warehouses. The air force also targeted sites from which rockets were being launched, including a car that the army said was being used by a cell of terrorists. One Hamas operative was reportedly killed in the airstrike. Unconfirmed reports claimed he was the relative of a senior Hamas commander.

Hamas said a 23-year-old pregnant…

Ely cathedral flying rainbow flag is ‘blasphemy’, priest says

Rev Gavin Ashenden, who is also a former chaplain to the Queen, made the comments following Mark Bonney, the Dean of Ely revealing that the cathedral would join others marking the start of the city’s new Pride Festival.

In a statement sent to Premier, Rev Bonney said: “I am very pleased that Chapter agreed to my request to fly the ‘Pride’ flag from the Cathedral tower on 11 August when Pride in Ely holds is first  festival. I am pleased first of all to lend my backing to this community event because it celebrates the breadth and diversity of the community in which we all live.

“I am also very conscious that Christians have not always been perceived as being as supportive and inclusive as some of us would wish, and so I am pleased to fly this flag as a sign of the kind of inclusion that I wish to promote at the Cathedral.”

In a blog post, titled ‘Ely cathedral and the great apostasy’, Rev Ashenden said: “The Dean of Ely has adopted the secular values of a culture that has set its face against Christianity, and is waging a war against Judaeo-Christian culture. Sexual ethics have always been at the heart of the Christian’s struggle with sin, the world and the devil. But it seems the Dean of Ely is not over concerned with either sin, or the distinction between the Church and the world, or the struggle with evil.

“But then more and more cathedrals see themselves…

Ancient Statue Discovered During Road Work – Urban Christian News

A second sphinx from the time of ancient Egypt has been discovered, after workers accidentally dug up the renowned artefact during road works.

Engineers came to a halt after stumbling upon the a large statue, which they described as having a “lion’s body with a human head”.

They soon realised they retrieved the world’s second Egyptian sphinx, which originated as far as 2500 BC during the reign of the Pharoah Kafre in Egypt.

Mohamed Abel Aziz, the Director General of Antiquities, said the structure has yet to be removed from the ground, and remains embedded in soil until it can be properly excavated.

Members of the public can now visit the site where the sphinx was found, Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani said.

The Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt is the largest and most famous sphinx in the world, and is situated at the Giza Plateau, on the west bank of the Nile River in Egypt.

It was carved from the bedrock of Giza plateau, made out of limestone, and is said to be one of the world’s largest single-stone statues.

The ancient Egyptians regarded the sphinx as a symbol of royalty, and pharaohs would have their heads carved into stone which are then placed on their tombs.

This was known as a way to mark their relationships with Sekhmet, the solar deity, which was believed to be a lioness.

‘The Catholic Church has blood on its hands’ says abuse survivor

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse found monks covered up criminal offending at Downside and Ampleforth across 40 years.

Responding to the report in a statement released by legal firm Slater and Gordon, the victim said: “I was vulnerable, broken and needed help from the church when I was a child.

“I trusted them to help but instead my life was destroyed and I was handed a life sentence of suffering by my abuser and those who failed to act against it.”

They added: “Many people who were abused by clergy have ended up taking their lives or lived lives of self destruction because of the unbearable pain they have suffered.

“The Catholic Church has blood on its hands as a result.”

“The findings leave no doubt that there must be mandatory safeguarding reporting, nothing less. The church must cease to be its own judge and jury. The network of collusion and cover up amongst clergy has to end,” it concluded.

Richard Scorer, a lawyer from Slater and Gordon who represented several victims from Ampleforth and Downside at the inquiry, said: “The abhorrent and disgraceful abuse in the Catholic Church has once again been laid bare by this inquiry.

“This familiar and shameful story of cover-up has been told time and time again, and is a devastating indictment of an organisation guilty of gross failures on child protection.

“It is clear that the Catholic Church is woefully…

Survey Says Pet Owners Are Happier, Wealthier, and More Fit – Urban Christian News

If you think pets are the pits, you may not be living to your potential. A new survey finds that people who own pets are happier, earn more money, and exercise more frequently than those who don’t.

In a poll of 1,000 British dog and cat owners over 55 and 1,000 people in the same age group who don’t have any pets, researchers calculated that pet owners were twice as likely to consider themselves a success. In fact, 9 in 10 owners agreed that their furry family members were good for their health and well-being. The belief makes sense: the survey showed that pet owners log nearly twice as much exercise, getting a good sweat about five times per week, versus just three time a week for the non-owners.

“The many benefits of pet ownership also include the cardio-vascular exercise of dog-walking, and even the light housework associated with feeding and clearing up after our beloved animals,” says psychologist and author Corinne Sweet in a release.

The survey, commissioned by McCarthy & Stone, a leading retirement housebuilder in the United Kingdom, might make you wonder more about the seemingly sadder lives of the non-owner group. That’s because the researchers claim pet owners surveyed were more likely to be married, have a child, hold a college degree, and work the “perfect job.”

But perhaps most shockingly, having a cat or dog is somehow linked to a higher salary. Pet-loving participants earned nearly $5,200 more per year than their counterparts.

And owners proved to be more philanthropic too, volunteering for charities more frequently than the other group.

But…

Prayers said for nine-year-old girl killed by cliff rock fall

Inside was a candle, a books of poems and a tribute which read: “Please remember in your prayers the young girl who died on Wednesday in a tragic accident.

“Remember also all her family and all affected by this incident.”

It is not the first rock fall tragedy to happen along the British coastline.

Villagers living close to where the girl – who has not been named – have said the cliffs there are notoriously unstable.

It is understood the youngster was visiting Staithes with her mother when the tragedy happened on Wednesday, just on the other side of the sea wall to the harbour, at the eastern of the village.

Owen Humphreys/PA Wire

The scene was around 100m beyond a prominent red sign, screwed to the rock face, which warns of the dangers of the cliffs.

But people who live in Staithes said visitors are often not aware of the constantly crumbling nature of the shale rock, saying youngsters often hack it with hammers looking for fossils.

North Yorkshire Police said the girl died after suffering serious head injuries at around 4.45pm on Wednesday.

Owen Humphreys/PA Wire

A spokesman said: “Sadly, despite the efforts of the emergency services, the girl died at the scene from her injuries.”

“The beach was reopen on Wednesday afternoon and some people laid flowers on the harbour wall, close to the scene.”

A single sunflower was…
