Baptist Church Builds 20 Tiny Homes for Recovering Addicts in Opioid-Stricken Community

A Southern Baptist church in one of the poorest communities in the United States plans to build 20 tiny homes to help accommodate the needs of recovering drug addicts in their quest toward sobriety.

Crossroads Community Baptist Church in McCreary County, Kentucky, and its pastor, Grant Hasty, are constructing a community of tiny homes that will assist a county that has been hit hard by the ongoing opioid epidemic in the U.S.

WBIR news reports that the project comes as 32 percent of McCreary’s population lives below the poverty line.

“When someone wants help and they don’t have a support system behind them on a regular basis to hold them accountable … that’s when they have issues of relapsing,” Hasty told the television news outlet.

The pastor explained that the church currently has about 13 acres of land on a horse farm, about half of which will be used for the development of the tiny homes. Along with helping the addicts stay clean, the program aims to incorporate a job training element to help them get back on their feet financially.

Program volunteer Vicki Kidd told WBIR that those…

Philippine Church leaders call for prayer and fasting after president calls God ‘stupid’

His profane remarks have set the leader on a collision course with Asia’s largest Catholic Church.

Archbishop Romulo Valles, who heads the country’s association of bishops, called for a day of prayer on 16th July to invoke “God’s mercy and justice on those who have blasphemed God’s holy name, those who slander and bear false witness and those who commit murder or justify murder as a means for fighting criminality”.

He asked Filipino Catholics to join bishops in three more days of fasting, prayer and almsgiving starting on 17th July.

His statement, which did not mention President Duterte’s name, added: “The Church respects the political authority, especially of democratically-elected government officials, as long as they do not contradict the basic spiritual and moral principles we hold dear, such as respect for the sacredness of life, the integrity of creation, and the inherent dignity of the human person.”

On Friday, Mr Duerte vowed to resign from his position if someone could prove God is real though a selfie.

“I just need one witness who will say, ‘Those fools at the church ordered me to go to heaven and talk to God. God really exists. We have a picture together and I brought a selfie’,” he said during the opening of a science and technology event.

A week prior he used an expletive to describe God and called him “stupid”.

Sutherland Springs church gets $3m in donations after Texas shooting

People from all over the world helped the Texas church to raise the funds after the church was demolished as it was deemed too painful to continue using it as a place of worship following the shooting.

Frank Pomeroy – the pastor at the church, recently revealed plans for a $3m project for a new site to draw the Sutherland Springs community back together.

He told ABC news: “Just as God was resurrected and brought back, he’s bringing Sutherland Springs back.”

The present sanctuary has been turned into a memorial to those killed in last November’s massacre.

The new plans for the church sparked controversy after families of some of the victims questioned how the church was spending donations, the Dallas Morning News reported in April.

There have also been non-monetary donations made to the church, including blankets, toys and other gifts.

Scientists Come Up With New ‘Phenotypic Age’ Blood Test That Can Identify People Aging Faster Than Normal

A newly developed blood test is showing that it can more accurately predict how long a person has to live by measuring elements other than an individual’s chronological age.

Researchers at the Yale University in Connecticut set out to determine the validity and effectiveness of a blood test that aims to measure a person’s “Phenotypic Age” instead of their chronological age.

The “Phenotypic Age” is different from the common measure people use because it is based on how old a body is according to nine different biomarkers.

The specific biomarkers used for the test were not identified.

In order to come up with accurate biomarkers, the scientists first sought to determine which clinical measures worked best in terms of predicting life expectancy after studying information from 10,000 people who participated in a study conducted from 1988 to 1994, The Guardian reported.

The scientists then took those earlier findings to identify the biomarkers they needed and they conducted a second study on 11,000 people between 1999 and 2010 to see how effective their test is.

With all the data in hand, the scientists concluded that if a person’s “Phenotypic Age” is significantly higher than his/her chronological age, then the individual in question is at greater risk of dying young.

That finding holds true across different age groups.

The relationship between “Phenotypic Age” and chronological age is even more noticeable among those aged 20-39. Within this group, the chances of an individual dying increased by 14 percent with every year that “Phenotypic Age” was…

YouVersion Bible App celebrates 10 year anniversary

Created by YouVersion, the Bible App was one of the first 200 free apps available when Apple launched the App Store on 10th July 2008.

In the decade since, it has been downloaded on more than 330 million devices and in every country of the world.

“We never could have predicted the results we’ve seen as millions of people around the world have read, listened to, shared and interacted with the Bible and each other in new ways,” said Bobby Gruenewald, YouVersion founder and pastor of Life Church.

In the last decade, people have used the app to:

  • Read 70 billion chapters of the Bible
  • Listen to 12 billion audio chapters of the Bible
  • Make 4 billion highlights, bookmarks and notes
  • Complete 2.4 billion Bible Plan days

“Early on, we discovered that proximity helped us engage with the Bible,” said Gruenewald. “As soon as I had access to the Bible on the phone that’s always in my pocket, my connection to it naturally became more frequent.”

The app, which initially launched with 15 versions and two languages, has since partnered with publishers and Bible societies to offer more than 1,700 different versions, including the text in more than 1,200 languages.

With smartphones propelling social media platforms to new heights, the YouVersion community quickly adopted social sharing features as they were added to the app.

New Complaint Against Megachurch Pastor Dean Curry Alleges Multiple Instances of Sexual Misconduct

A former board member of the multi-campus Life Center Assembly of God church in Tacoma, Washington, has filed a formal complaint with federal and state agencies alleging that Dean Curry, who was recently dismissed as the church’s pastor, previously engaged in multiple instances of sexual misconduct involving church members and employees.

Julee Dilley, who was elected to the Life Center Board in 2014 but left the church in 2016 over the way the church handled the investigation into those allegations, recently filed complaints to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the state Human Rights Commission, according to The News Tribune.

“This is a situation I never wanted to be in or thought I would be in,” Dilley said in an interview with The News Tribune. “I’m just a stay-at-home mom who wants to serve my church. This is about the welfare of the church.

“I see it as a move toward accountability. I’m seeking no gain — absolutely no gain. I love the church. I’m concerned about the welfare of the church. These are moral issues that have been long-standing and consistent.”

Dilley explained that she is a witness in the complaints filed against…

Prison ministry pastor backs government’s plan to give inmates phones

The £7m move is part of a £30 m package to reduce violence and crime in prisons and stem the flow of illegal mobiles.

Speaking during Premier’s News Hour, Pastor Philip Noel from Jesus House highlighted how the “luxury” item would increase the likelihood for prisoners to be rehabilitated.

“From a human being point of view or from a Christian’s, yes, it is a luxury but we’re not actually sending them in there to die we’re actually sending them in there hoping that the time will change their attitude to life and their fellow human beings,” he said.

“So we really want to make sure that we can do that responsibly and people need to have a voice before they start to hear the wrong voices and can come out worse than when they went in.”

The technology is already in place at 20 prisons, but the Ministry of Justice wants to extend the scheme to another 20 over the next two years.

All calls – which will continue to be paid for by prisoners – will be recorded with active monitoring introduced if there is any suspicion the service is being abused for crime. Only phone numbers on an approved list will be called.

Currently, most prisoners queue for public phones on the landings, which can be a trigger for violence, the Ministry of Justice said.

Explaining the importance of prisoners speaking to their families, Pastor Noel said: “You’ve got to consider those who are left behind….

Planned Parenthood: Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee Will ‘Wreak Havoc’ on Abortion

Planned Parenthood: Trump’s Supreme Court Nominee Will ‘Wreak Havoc’ on Abortion

Planned Parenthood executives say U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh would “wreak havoc” on abortion.

“There’s no way to sugarcoat it: With this nomination, the constitutional right to access safe, legal abortion in this country is on the line,” said Dawn Laguens, vice president of Planned Parenthood.

Kavanaugh could bring the Supreme Court to a conservative majority. He previously served on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C. His record includes enforcing restrictions on abortion and protecting religious liberty.

In response to his nomination by President Donald Trump, Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion organizations protested outside the U.S. Supreme Court.

“We’re rallying outside of the Supreme Court to reject Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s #SCOTUS pick who could wreak havoc on our health, rights, and communities for generations to come,” Planned Parenthood Action tweeted.

In New York City, at least seven people were arrested during a similar protest outside Trump Tower.

Pro-choice groups are worried a conservative majority on the Supreme Court could reverse the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

“It’s clear our constitutional right to access abortion is on the line. You don’t even need to take our word for it,” Planned Parenthood wrote on Twitter.

Said Cecile Richards, former president of Planned…
