How to Deal With an Angry Church Member

Podcast Episode #446

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

I get asked this question on nearly a daily basis. Pastors from all over are wanting to know how to deal with angry church members.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Responding to anger with more anger just escalates the situation.
  • Sometimes people who are lashing out in anger just want to know they’ve been heard.
  • Social media is not the place to try to end a heated argument.
  • The visceral reaction is to argue with someone who is angry with us—the spiritual reaction is to pray for them.
  • Sometimes pastors make decisions that make church members angry. It happens.

The seven ways you can deal with an angry church member are:

  1. Don’t respond in anger.
  2. Listen and repeat.
  3. Consider bringing in a third party.
  4. Try to determine the source of the anger.
  5. Dispel any factual errors calmly.
  6. Offer possible solutions.
  7. Pray with the person.

Compromise Reached in German Government’s Standoff Over Migration – Urban Christian News

Chancellor Angela Merkel and her rebellious political allies broke an impasse over immigration that threatened to bring down Germany’s coalition government by agreeing on a compromise late Monday that both sides said addressed their concerns.

Merkel has been at odds for more than three weeks with Interior Minister Horst Seehofer over his insistence that migrants who have sought asylum elsewhere in the European Union should be turned away at Germany’s borders. Seehofer leads the Christian Social Union, the sister party to the chancellor’s Christian Democratic Union.

Merkel was equally steadfast in arguing that such a unilateral action would cause other countries to close their borders and jeopardize the passport-free movement that is a hallmark of Europe’s Schengen zone.

But the two emerged from about five hours of talks saying they agreed to establish “transit centers” on Germany’s border with Austria where asylum-seekers would be evaluated and, if it turned out they already had applied for protection in another EU country, sent back to that country.

Individuals who are rejected by those countries will be pointed back into Austria “upon agreement” with Vienna, according to the deal that Merkel called a “very good compromise.”

“The spirit of partnership within the European Union is protected, and at the same time it’s a decisive step to regulate and organize secondary migration,” she told reporters without taking questions.

It was not immediately clear whether Austria had already agreed to the provision. Whether the two conservative parties would be…

Australian bishop sentenced to year’s detention for child sex abuse cover-up

Newcastle Magistrate Robert Stone ordered Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson to serve at least six months before he is eligible for parole.

But Wilson will not immediately go into custody. Mr Stone will consider on August 14 whether Wilson is suitable for home detention. He could live with his sister near Newcastle.

Mr Stone in May found the 67-year-old cleric guilty in the Newcastle Local Court of failing to report to police the repeated abuse of two altar boys by paedophile priest James Fletcher in the Hunter Valley region north of Sydney during the 1970s.

Wilson faced a potential maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Survivors of abuse who protested against the church outside the court on Tuesday called on Wilson to resign as archbishop.

The sentencing was another step toward holding the church to account for a global abuse crisis that has also engulfed Pope Francis’ financial minister, Australian Cardinal George Pell.

Some lawyers said they expect many more clerics to be charged in Australia as a result of Wilson’s test case.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 3 July 2018 Devotional — Simplicity and Decisions

Topic: Simplicity and Decisions [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Tuesday July 3, 2018]

…but who honors those who fear the Lord; who swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved. — Psalm 15:4-5

Decision-making can be simple if we refuse to be double-minded. After making a decision, stand firm, let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” be “no.” Indecision and double-mindedness not only bring confusion and complication, but, as James noted, they also cause condemnation (see James 5:12).

If we believe in our hearts that we should do something and then allow our heads to talk us out of it, it is an open door for condemnation. We often labor over decisions when actually we just need to decide. Pray for God’s wisdom and guidance, and then make decisions without worrying about them.

Thankfully, you don’t have to live in fear of being wrong. If your heart is right and you make a decision that is not in accordance with God’s will and end up going astray, He will forgive you, find you, and get you back on course.

Prayer Starter: Father, help me to avoid complicating the process of decision-making. I thank You that You see my heart and You will correct my course if I take a wrong step. I thank You that I can simply follow what I believe You are leading me to do and trust You to protect me in the process. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional Tuesday, 3 July 2018 – The Word Makes the Difference

TOPIC: The Word Makes The Difference (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Tuesday, 3 July 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: John 1: 1-5

MEMORY VERSE: “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.” Jeremiah 15:16

The MESSAGE:

The Bible tells us about a wonderful mystery here in the Fire Scripture. The Word of God is the beginning of everything. The Word is the creator of all things. So, when you get the Word, you get everything. Since the Word is the beginning of everything then you ought to start everything with the Word. This is the secret of a life that flows with unspeakable joy.

A brother and a sister (church goers) met at a party and decided to start a relationship which ended in marriage. During the wedding reception, the husband was asked how he met his wife. He simply put it like this: she is beautiful and has a good job. Soon after the wedding, his wife lost her job and he began to harass her. He eventually left home and when he was asked why he left his wife, he said, “God did not join us together, we joined each other”. This situation could have been avoided if they had started building the relationship on the Word.

The reason majority of the people are frustrated and in bondage today is simply because they started life undertakings before discovering the word that supports them. Beloved, before that marriage, that business, that ministry started, did you seek the word of God? The reason the world and some believers alike are in a state of confusion is because they have neglected the power source of life which is the word of God. Some have seen it, but did not eat it. However, Jeremiah found the words and ate them and it was joy and rejoicing unto him. The word brings light, wisdom, success, joy and strength unto them that find and eat it. Before you embark on the project, first find the words that align with it, eat it and digest it. Confess the words on the project and the light of God will spring forth upon it bringing to you joy and rejoicing.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
If you empty yourself of the world and fill yourself up with His word, then all will be added to you.

PROPHETIC WORD:
The word of God shall be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your your path.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Thank You Lord for this wonderful morning, in the name of Jesus.
2. My Father and my God, give me a word for each day, in the name of Jesus.
3. This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad on it, in name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. My Father, any time I have not sought for the counsel of Your word before embarking on any undertaking, please forgive me, in Jesus’ name.
5. Father, let Your word lighten my path this day, in Jesus’ name.
6. Lord Jesus, light of the world, shine on me and let Your glory be revealed in my life, in Jesus’ name.
7. Father, give me a brand new beginning of success, favour, anointing, in Jesus’ name.

Teens Open Heavens 3 July 2018 – Saint or Sinner

Topic: Saint or Sinner [Teens Open Heavens 3, July 2018]

Memorise: For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh.) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Romans 7:18

Read: Romans 7:18-25 (KJV)

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Bible In One Year: Job 26-28, Acts 11

MESSAGE:

Not everyone who appears to rejoice with you over an accomplishment or promotion is sincere. In fact, many people mean the exact opposite of their good wishes. It is only in the Kingdom of God that you can have those who will genuinely rejoice with you. If you claim you belong to God’s Kingdom and still find it difficult to rejoice at the rise or elevation of others, the law of sin is still very strong in your life.

A genuine child of God will sincerely rejoice with those that rejoice, and sincerely mourn with those that mourn. If you know that doing this doesn’t come easy to you, you have to start praying earnestly for God to arrest your heart and make it broken and tender.

Action Point: Pray that every devourer pretending to be a friend of your family should be exposed.

Hymn 13:

1. Is your life a channel of blessing?
Is the love of God flowing through you?
Are you telling the lost of the Savior?
Are you ready His service to do?

Chorus:
Make me a channel of blessing today,
Make me a channel of blessing, I pray;
My life possessing, my service blessing,
Make me a channel of blessing today.

2. Is your life a channel of blessing?
Are you burdened for those that are lost?
Have you urged upon those who are straying
The Savior who does on the cross

3. Is your life a channel of blessing?
Is it a daily telling for Him?
Have you spoken the word of salvation
To those who are dying in sin?

4. We cannot be channels of blessing
If our lives are not free from sin;
We will barriers be and a hindrance
To those we are trying to win.

TREM Devotional 3 July 2018 by Dr. Mike Okonkwo – God’s Gift of Righteousness

Topic: God’s Gift of Righteousness [TREM Devotional Tuesday July 3, 2018]

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”2 Corinthians 5:21

What an awesome love! Christ has saved everybody in the world. But now, it is left for every man to receive the gift. You must receive what has been offered. The fall of man has so messed up our minds that we find it difficult to receive what has been freely given to us. He who knew no sin became sin. The reason he became sin is for us to be made righteous. We have been made to receive His own righteousness as a gift. We have been made to have right standing. He became sin for us so that we can have His DNA in order to stand before Him with no sense of inferiority, condemnation, judgment or guilt. From this awesome position, you come to a knowing that when you rebuke the devil, he will obey you. He became sin for you so that you can stand before him knowing that when you open your mouth in prayers, you’re guaranteed of answers. That is what righteousness is all about.

Listen, why do you think, Jesus cried ‘Father, is there another way for me to pay this price?’ For the first time, He had a taste of sin. And when it dawned on Him what He was going to carry, He asked if there was another way.

So it is an insult to His finished work for a believer, after Christ has paid that supreme price, to turn around and think that he can add to it. The price or the sacrifice you want to pay to satisfy Him is too cheap. It is not good enough. There is nothing under the sun that is qualified to pay for sin. Only the blood of Jesus!

Your blood is stained with sin, so it cannot cleanse anyone from sin. It is only the pure and holy blood of Jesus Christ; the Lamb of God that cleanses from sin. Thank you Lord for the blood! Hallelujah! He became sin so that we can become righteous. What is your problem in becoming righteous? What’s your problem in accepting what He made you?

DCLM Daily Manna 3 July, 2018 by Pastor Kumuyi – Real Conversion

Topic: Real Conversion [DCLM Daily Manna Tuesday July 3, 2018]

Text: Mark 10:13-16 (KJV)

Key Verse: “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein” (Mark 10:15).

MESSAGE:

Children are the greatest gift to parents. When they are young, they offer the best company. Their laughter is contagious; their questions are sincere; their trust is absolute and they often tell the truth. Also, they do not have evil intentions or keep list of offenders.

Children were brought to Jesus, as He taught in the coasts of Judea around Jordan, by their mothers who joined the crowd. But His disciples rebuked the women. Perhaps, they thought Jesus was too busy to be disturbed by little children. But He rebuked them and asked them to allow the children to come to Him. He further revealed that conversion is incomplete until one possesses the humility and simplicity of children.

What special characteristics in children are highlighted in our text as evidence of conversion? The children brought to Christ were described as ‘little children’ in their state of sincere innocence who hadn’t reached the age of accountability. They do not have ulterior motive and diplomacy of adults.

No wonder the Scripture reveals that of such is the kingdom of God. This implies that making it to heaven requires the innocence and simplicity of children. You must repent of all your sins, ask the Lord to pardon you of all the wrongs you have committed and believe in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross to atone for your sins before you can have this real conversion characterised by childlikeness.

Thought For The Day: The nature of children is the vibrant element of a true Christian.

Seeds of Destiny 3 July 2018 by Pastor Paul Enenche – God’s Principal Demand On His Children

Topic: God’s Principal Demand On His Children [Seeds of Destiny Tuesday July 3, 2018]

Scripture: My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. Proverbs 23:26.

Thought For The Day: Anyone or anything that has your heart has your life.

It is God’s delight to see His children seek after Him with the whole of their hearts. Many people think that when we appear before God in church to worship Him, the first thing God wants from our lives is our money or offering. Others think that God is a task-master who is always making unnecessary demands on His people. That is not true! To clear this misconception, there is a need to understand God’s principal demand on our lives.

Now, what does God want from your life?
Your Heart!
Our anchor Scripture reveals that what God wants from our lives is our heart; He wants to own your heart and your life. God wants you to make Him the topmost priority of your life. To succeed with God on earth and in eternity, your life must revolve around Him.

Unfortunately, today, there are many people who set other things as priority over God in their lives, and then God becomes secondary; they give their hearts to the pursuit of money, alcoholism, tobacco, sports, drug addiction and immorality. That is not right.

Beloved, anyone or anything that has your heart has your life. When Samson gave his heart to Delilah, she took his life. A man who gives his heart to alcohol or to cocaine addiction, risks being ruined by that alcohol or cocaine addiction.

Beloved, what is the centre of your life? Can you confidently say that God is the centre of your life by the way you live?

My counsel is, decide to make God the Centre of your life today. This is what He requires of your life.

Remember this: Anyone or anything that has your heart has your life.

Assignments:
1. Read today’s message again.
2. Give God your heart completely and make Him the Centre of your life.

Prayer: O Lord, I relinquish the ownership of my heart and life to You. I ask that You become the Centre of my life, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Kenneth & Gloria Copeland Devotional 3 July 2018 – God’s Discipline

Topic: God’s Discipline [Kenneth & Gloria Copeland, Tuesday July 3, 2018]

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? – Hebrews 12:6-7

There’s a terrible misunderstanding among believers today about God’s method of disciplining His children. They’ll point to some kind of disaster—a tornado or a car accident—and say, “I guess God sent that catastrophe to teach us something.”

No, He didn’t! A loving God doesn’t send death and destruction on His children to instruct them. He doesn’t unleash His bad dog to bite us on the leg, so we’ll learn to wear our boots!

How does He chastise His own? With His Word.

Second Timothy 3:16-17 says, “Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness, (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose and action), so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work” (The Amplified Bible).

If you’ll look in 2 Corinthians 7, you’ll see an example of this. There the Apostle Paul talks about a situation in the Corinthian church that needed correction. That church had gotten out of line and had to be disciplined.

How did Paul do it? Not by asking God to send an earthquake to shake them up! He did it by writing them a letter. He wrote them a word of reproof that hurt so badly they would have preferred being beaten with a stick. It cut deep into their spirits and brought them to repentance.

Your heavenly Father loves you and because He does, He will chasten you. But He’ll do it with spiritual, not fleshly tools. He’ll use the spirit-power in His Word to chasten unbelief and purify your spirit in such a way that you’ll come out strong, not weak and condemned.

So quit bowing down to disasters and start subjecting yourself instead to the Word of God. Yield to the Word. Let it correct you and trim away the flesh and the lusts that lead you astray. Remember, the sword of the Spirit is two-edged—one side is for Satan and the other side is for you. Let God use it to keep you in line!

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 7
