Open Heavens 2 July 2018 – Eternal Security: An Illusion II

Topic: Eternal Security: An Illusion II [Open Heavens 2nd July 2018, Monday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.2 Peter 3:17

Read: Ezekiel 33:12-20 (KJV)

12 Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.

13 When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.

14 Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;

15 If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.

16 None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.

17 Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.

18 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.

19 But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.

20 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

Bible in One Year: 1 Chronicle 23-25, Acts 20:36-21:16

MESSAGE:

Yesterday, we started reflecting on the doctrine of eternal security. We considered what this false doctrine teaches and the character of its teachers. Today, we will be looking at the truth of what God’s word says in contrast to this doctrine. If there was no possibility of falling away and losing one’s inheritance in Christ, the Holy Spirit would not have given the counsel we have in today’s memory verse. In fact, the Holy Spirit in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 also warns:

“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;”

Only those who occupy high position need to fear a fall. The “falling away” in this Scripture therefore refers to the falling away from grace of those seated with Christ in heavenly places. The possibility of a saved person falling is registered in these Scriptures and in several others (Galatians 5:4, Revelations 2:5). Also, in today’s Bible reading, God Almighty told Prophet Ezekiel the truth which disproves the doctrine of eternal security. The Lord is therefore warning everyone who chooses to live a godly life never to depart from the path of righteousness, or else his or her past righteous deeds will not be remembered on the day he or she departs to do evil.

Some people argue that nobody sends his child away to the lion because he or she sins, and so God will not judge His children for their sin. What such people don’t seem to understand is that you cannot equate the ways of God with that of mere mortal men. They fail to recognize that a person who continues to live in sin after being saved does not have the nature of God and is therefore not a child of God. This is made clear in 1 John 3:8:

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

Furthermore, while forewarning us of things to come in Matthew 24:12-13, Jesus Christ said:

“12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

In other words, the global increase in iniquity will not exonerate a backslider on the Day of Judgment. This is a lesson for those who think that because the world is changing, God should also change His standards (2 Timothy 2:19). Beloved, it would be immoral for God to accept from us what He did not accept from those who ran the Christian race before us. Don’t be deceived; there is no eternal security. The wages of sin is death: this is the truth of God’s word that is forever settled.

Prayer Point: Father, please uphold me to the very end, and keep my heart away from false doctrine in Jesus Name.

Hymn 12: Take My Life, And Let It Be

1.Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise,
Let them flow in endless praise.

2.Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3.Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose,
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Japan’s oldest Christian sites given protective UNESCO status

Collectively known as the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region, they have been added to the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The body said: “Together, they reflect the earliest activities of Christian missionaries and settlers in Japan – the phase of encounter, followed by times of prohibition and persecution of the Christian faith and the final phase of the revitalization of Christian communities after the lifting of prohibition in 1873.

“These sites bear unique testimony to a cultural tradition nurtured by hidden Christians in the Nagasaki region who secretly transmitted their faith during the period of prohibition from the 17th to the 19th century.”

The new World Heritage Site includes the remains of Hara Castle, a 17th structure which dates back to the Shimabara Rebellion – an uprising involving many Catholic peasants.

Though Japan can trace its Christian influence to the arrival of Portuguese Catholics in the 16th century, it was outlawed under the Edo Period (1603-1867) after the Rebellion.

Other attractions include the Oura Cathedral, Japan’s oldest-surviving church.

Nagasaki Governor Hodo Nakamura said: “We would like to give pride to residents and excitement to visitors through this heritage by engaging in preservation of the sites…

Gothic Surprise in the Small English Town of Beverley

(PHOTO: DENNIS LENNOX)Beverley, England

London may define England and arguably the entire United Kingdom, but small towns and villages remain the lifeblood of this country.

One such place is Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Surrounded by the countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds this relatively small town (population about 30,000) punches well above its weight.

Beyond its showpiece church, which rivals many cathedrals in both grandeur and size, there is also a pleasant city center with storefronts neither empty nor occupied by the thrift shops that plague too many of this country’s main streets or high streets, as they are called in British English.

For me, Beverley Minster with its medieval architecture and superb twin west towers was the big draw. Other visitors may, however, be interested in the several music, food and literary festivals held throughout the year. Then there are the quaintly named towns and villages of the Wolds — Bishop Burton, Sledmore, Fridaythorpe, Pocklington — that surround Beverley.

There is even a good chance you have seen the minster without knowing it. That’s because it has been used by filmmakers to double for the considerably more famous Westminster Abbey in London.

Beverley’s principal parish church is not a cathedral, despite there being a suffragan (or assistant) bishop of Beverley in the episcopacy of the Church of England. Rather, the minster designation is a British peculiarity, reflecting the church’s Anglo-Saxon origins. In those days, churches with a monastic or collegiate foundation were named minsters.

The present edifice is a 13th…

Nigeria violence death toll ‘exceeds 200’, prompting anti-Christian ‘cleansing’ warning

A group which monitors Christian persecution has re-iterated its concern the targeting of mainly Christian villages by Muslim-majority Fulani herdsman amounts to “ethnic and religious cleansing”.

There have been claims the bloodshed is being fuelled by cattle rustling and the displacement of communities stemming from a southward advancement of the Sahara Desert – and subsequent disputes over access to land.

But Release International said on Sunday “the picture of much bigger than that”.

Spokesman Andrew Boyd told Premier: “The effect of it is to displace many thousands of people.

“The interests that it serves is [sic] the interests of those who want to see the ethnic and religious cleansing of certain tribes, and the Christian faith from the north of Nigeria.”

Some local church leaders suspect the Fulani herdsmen may have been armed and supported thanks to collusion involving Islamist elements within the country’s military.

Equipped with guns and machetes, they have attacked ten villages near the regional capital Jos in the last fortnight.

Describing the recent violence, Andrew Boyd continued: “They’ll set fire to some of the house. The villagers flee the flames and they flee the bullets.

“They rush outside their villages where these guys are lying in wait with them – sometime with nets which they use to catch animals – and they’re then hacking them down with…

Creative Worship Services Drawing the Young, but Some Worry It’s Going Too Far

(Screenshot: Facebook)An aerialist glorifies God with her body at the Embassy Church International in Atlanta, Georgia on April 6, 2018.

At Embassy Church International in Atlanta, worship isn’t just hand-clapping, solemn hymns and shouts of praise anymore.

In the last five years, traditional liturgy has evolved into Holy Spirit-driven, multisensory events where fog, concert lights, prophetic paintings and aerialist performances are all used to help usher churchgoers into “incredible” encounters with God.

“We’ve had some incredible experiences with fog,” said Ajani Brown, Embassy Church International’s pastor of operations.

“We have very high energetic worship services where we experience just all types of healing [and] miracles. So not only do they (congregants) get a high level of creativity but they also get raw presence and raw glory,” he said. “We’ve had so many testimonies of people set free and delivered just by what we offer in our ministry and we’re excited. We are taking creativity really to the next level in the church.”

Embassy Church International began in a living room with just 12 people five years ago. They were mostly college graduates hailing from different Christian traditions. For almost two years, that fellowship was stuck at just 11 people. It…

Catholic teaching on homosexuality ‘evil’, ex-Irish President Mary McAleese says

The independent politician, who served as Ireland’s President between 1997 and 2011, said the Church’s stance had directly affected her son who is living in a same-sex relationship.

She was quoted by The Irish Times as saying: “My church’s teaching on homosexuality is, in my view, evil.

“It conduces to homophobia; homophobia is evil.

“It ruins people’s lives. It has ruined families’ lives. It has caused people to commit suicide. It has caused people to live in dark shadows.”

The 67-year-old spoke ahead of attending the pro-gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender [LGBT] Dublin Pride event at the weekend – which she attended with her son Justin and his husband.

She said her son had been left in “the shadows of self-doubt [and] of misery of being really frightened” when he learned the church “has a view of him that is inimical to the way God made him”.

McAleese also described treatment of the LGBT community by the Catholic Church as “unchristian” and “worse than uncharitable”.

During a public interview given at the Missionary Society of St Columban in County Meath, she also criticised the Pope for not being progressive enough regarding the role of women in the Church.

Dublin’s annual Pride parade drew tens of thousands of people to the streets, including Ireland’s first openly gay prime minister, Leo Varadkar.

Woman succeeds woman as president in first for Methodist Church

Rev Michaela Youngson became the first woman to succeed a woman President of the denomination as she took over the reins from Rev Lorraine Mellor.

Marking the start of her twelve-month tenure with a symbolic gesture repeated each time a new President is inducted, Rev Youngson was presented with a Bible used by John Wesley.

‘Radical grace’ has been named Rev Youngson’s theme for the year, reflecting her passion to see the Church reflect God’s grace in its hospitality and mission.

During her Presidential address before Methodists gathered the University of Nottingham, she said: “God’s grace is radical.

“It goes beyond what is only fair, to a prodigious reckless generosity. It is prevenient grace, which flows from the Lover’s desire to see the beloved flourish, to be whole and to live in delight.

“We need to let go of our tendency to ‘niceness’ and, prompted by just how uncomfortable God’s grace is, make a nuisance of ourselves again in the market place and in the public square, refusing to remain silent in the face of systems that reinforce injustice, and oppress vulnerable people.”

The Methodist Conference of Great Britain

Rev Youngson – who will receive support from the new Methodist Vice-Presdient Bala Gnanapragasam – was first ordained in 1997.

The Methodist Church remains one of the largest Christian denominations in the UK, with approximately 188,000…

Asian Economies Discuss Trade Pact Amid Rising Protectionism – Urban Christian News

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday called for an early conclusion of a regional trade pact that ensures free and rules-based commerce in the face of an increasingly protectionist United states under President Donald Trump.

Japan co-chairs the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, with Singapore, and seeks to take leadership in shaping the pact as an alternative to a Pacific Rim free-trade grouping that Trump abandoned early this year.

In his opening remarks to a meeting of 16 Asian trade ministers, Abe said a pact among the countries that together make up half the global population has an enormous growth potential.

“As we are faced with concerns of the rise of protectionism in the world, all of us in Asia must unite, and our future depends on whether we can keep hoisting our flagship principle of free and fair trade,” Abe told the meeting in Tokyo. He said RCEP is increasingly getting more attention from the rest of the world amid concerns of protectionism, so “Let us be as one and achieve a free, fair and rules-based market in this region.”

Trump, who says he prefers bilateral deals, has pulled the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, leaving the remaining 11 countries from Chile to New Zealand to work on a revamped version of that pact.

Trump has imposed high tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and has threatened to add automobiles to reduce America’s trade deficit. He has singled out China’s products, prompting fears of a trade war.

Japan, already hit by increased U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, has told the World Trade…

Ex-cabinet minister Aitken ‘humbled’ to become prison chaplain

The ex-Tory MP was ordained at St Paul’s Cathedral and his ministry will focus on prison chaplaincy.

Ahead of his ordination celebration at the Old Bailey he joked that his first return to the famous London court building since being jailed there 19 years ago would be a happier occasion.

The newly-named Reverend Aitken, who was sentenced to 18 months in jail in 1999 after admitting perjury and perverting the course of justice, told the Press Association: “Well I won’t have to leave by the back door in handcuffs this time round.”

Speaking outside the cathedral in central London, wearing his religious garb in the hot sunshine on Saturday, he said being ordained was like “a new life”.

The 75-year-old said: “I’m honoured, humbled and delighted and still slightly surprised.”

His wife Elizabeth, daughters Victoria and Alexandra and other family and friends attended Saturday’s service where 32 people were made deacons.

John Stillwell/PA Wire

The former politician said Iain Duncan-Smith, Jeffrey Archer and Diane Abbott were among a crowd of 200 expected to join his party at the nearby Old Bailey.

Also among the invitees were former prisoners he had befriended during the 211 days he spent behind bars.

He said: “Call it a gathering of soulmates and cell mates because I’ve got six old Belmarshians (attending the celebration).

“I call them that because I…
