The Maryland shooting and “Searching for God at Ground Zero”

“There’s nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.” This is how Phil Davis, a reporter at the Capital Gazette in Maryland, responded to yesterday’s shooting in his newspaper building as it happened.

The acting police chief told a news conference last night, “This was a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette.” CNN reports this morning that a gunman, armed with a shotgun, opened fire through the front doors of the newsroom around 3 p.m.

Four employees died at the scene; a fifth person died at a hospital. Three others were wounded.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Jarrod Warren Ramos. According to court documents, he filed a defamation suit against the newspaper in 2012 for an article describing his guilty plea in a harassment case. His case against the paper was dismissed.

As I watched the shooting in Maryland unfold yesterday, I began asking the Lord what I could say that I have not already said about similar horrific events in the past. My attention was drawn to a book in my library I purchased shortly after 9/11 but had not read.

James Martin is a Jesuit priest and writer. He was editor of a Catholic magazine in New York City when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. Searching for God at Ground Zero describes firsthand his experiences volunteering at the site in the days following the worst terrorist attack in American history.

His book led me to focus this morning not on the shooter in Maryland but on those who responded to his violence. In their presence and courage, I found encouragement from God.

“Working together for a common good”

Father Martin’s first encounter with the ruins of the World Trade Center was one of horror. He thought, “This is like hell. Full of immense sadness and terror and pathos.” His next thought: “And yet, here is grace. Everyone assembled at this place is dedicated to the work of rescue; everyone is…

Priest defends his gay marriage on Jeremy Kyle Show

Rev Philip Clements responded to claims he had been taken advantage of by Florin Marin after being left homeless when the pair split five months after tying the knot.

The 79-year-old former rector and boarding school chaplain had sold his home in Sandwich to buy a flat for the couple in the Romanian capital Bucharest – where 25-year-old Mr Marin is from.

After revealing he had moved back to England with nothing, Rev Clements was asked by ITV’s Jeremy Kyle whether he had been made a “fool” of.

Rev Clements said the couple – though still separated – were still trying to make things work, adding “Our relationship has been tested when I haven’t had money”.

Mr Marin, who met the elderly clergyman on a gay dating website three years ago, denied the idea he was a “gold-digger” who sought to take advantage of him.

Responding to anyone who criticised their relationship, Mr Marin said people should “mind their own business”.

ITV and The Jeremy Kyle Show

He added: “They don’t know me, they don’t know us.”

Asked by Kyle, “why did you marry him?,” Mr Marin replied, “Because I love him.”

Rev Clements said major cracks began to surface during their married life when Mr Marin chose to stay out late at nightclubs.

Students raise £1,500 to send cleaner and his Methodist minister wife on holiday

More than 230 people contributed to the gift so that 65-year-old Herman Gordon and his spouse Denise, 56, could travel to Herman’s home country, Jamaica.

In a note addressed to him, they said: “Dear Herman, on behalf of the students at Bristol, we would like to thank you for all the positive energy you have given to us throughout the years.

“You have brightened many of our days and we want you to know that we love and appreciate you.

“We have come together to give you a special gift as our way of saying thank you. Have a lovely summer.”

A crowdfunding page – describing Herman as “the epitome of happiness” – set up for him on JustGiving. It reached its target of £1,500 in five days.

Twenty-year-old medicine student at Bristol, Hadi Al-Zubaidi, who started the fundraising drive, told the BBC’s Newsbeat: “It just went crazy. I myself was shocked that he was this famous!”

“He spends the whole time being nice to everybody, it’s about time we were nice to him.”

In a video watched 35,000 times on Facebook, Herman, who has worked at the university for twelve years, was presented with a white envelope stuffed with money.

The footage showed him wiping his eyes and…

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional Friday, 29 June 2018 – The Spirit Of Discernment

TOPIC: The Spirit Of Discernment (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Friday, 29 June 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Ephesians 6:10-12

MEMORY VERSE: “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.” – 1 Corinthians 12:7

The MESSAGE:

There are two types of world: the physical world, which is a natural world of men and the spiritual world, inhabited by spiritual beings that are supernatural and these control the affairs of the natural world of men. This means that everything evil that happens physically is manipulated by unseen evil spiritual powers, in the spiritual world. Therefore, any problem or situation in the life of men is backed up by a power (Holy Spirit or demons).

There are three types of power that can be responsible for any situation in our world today. These powers include the power of the Almighty God, which is a positive power, the power of the devil which is a negative power and the power of man which can be positive or negative. Therefore, the spirit of discernment, which is the ability of a man to identify the power behind a situation or distinguish between good and bad, is a necessity for every child of God to profit withal. Equally important is the spirit to discern prophecy which can come from God, from the devil or from man. The prophecy from God is a prediction through the power of the Holy Spirit about the future of a thing, a place, a situation or a person.

However, there is a satanic counterfeit to the spirit of prophecy, which is known as divination. In order to distinguish between prophecy from God and satanic divination, we need the power of discernment of spirit. Every Christian has a gift of discernment inherent in him, but many have failed to develop it. Such Christians run from one false prophet to another seeking for solution to their problems. You should develop this gift by living a holy life, reading the word of God and praying to God for the gift of discernment.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
Only those whose ears are tuned to the aerials of heaven can hear from the Maker.

PROPHETIC WORD:
Power to discern between good and evil shall fall on you now.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Anything in my life hindering discernment, come out and die, in the name of Jesus.
2. Spirit of discernment, my life is available, enter, in the name of Jesus.
3. Powers assigned against my discerning ability, die, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Open my eyes O Lord to behold Your glory, in the name of Jesus.
5. My vision shall not go dim, in the name of Jesus.
6. Arrows that fly by day and terror of the night, backfire, in the name of Jesus.
7. I shall behold and see the reward of the wicked, in the name of Jesus.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 29 June 2018 Devotional — Living Life on Purpose

Topic: Living Life on Purpose [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Friday June 29, 2018]

Two are better than one because they have a more satisfying return for their labor; for if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and does not have another to lift him up. — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

Are you living the life you truly want to live? If not, is it because you allow your life to rule you instead of you ruling it? When God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, He instructed them to subdue it and be fruitful. God has given us a free will and He wants us to use it to choose His will for us. When we make choices according to the will of God, He empowers us to live a life that is truly amazing.

What do you want to accomplish today? Pray, make a plan, stay focused, and go for it! Put your time into what you want to do and don’t let circumstances and people derail you. Fight for yourself! Fight for your right to follow your heart instead of being controlled by outside forces.

Be determined; be strong. Don’t be vague and thoughtless, but have a plan and work your plan. God, through Christ, has provided a way for us to live an amazing life, but we need to continually make choices that agree with God. You have one life to live, so live it fully and refuse to drift along, letting other people and circumstances make your decisions for you.

Prayer Starter: Father, show me Your will for me and help me be courageous enough to make choices that agree with You. I want the life that You want for me! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

RCCG Sunday School TEACHER’s Manual 1 July 2018 Lesson 44 – Life

TOPIC: Life [Sunday, 1st June 2018]

OPENING PRAYER: Father, let my life be hidden in your life. Don’t allow the devil to snuff out my life. (Scroll down for SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN)

Bible Passage John 15: 5-19 (KJV)

5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”John 14:6

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

From time immemorial, people have been asking: “Why was I born? Why did God make me? Why am I here? What is the purpose of life? What is the meaning of life? What is life itself?” Various people give various answers. Some say, “Life is the union of soul and body.” This may be true of humans, but not of plants. Some say it is the period between birth and death. This of course is not true, for life exists before birth and after death. Only Jesus has the answer-Jn. 11: 25;14: 6. The Bible speaks of three kinds of life: Physical life, which was given to man at the time of creation; Spiritual life, which is the new life that God gives to the believer in Jesus Christ. David Ibiyeomie: Truth About Character

Topic: Truth About Character

Character is who you are when no one is watching you. Character is predictable. The first fundamental truth about character is that it is a matter of the heart. You must embrace godly character so that you can experience lasting success. The root of character is in the heart.

Mark 3:20-23 -And he said, that which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Character cannot be changed until you change your thoughts. Whatever that has been displayed outside begins from within. So, your thoughts determine your actions and your actions determine your habit. If a man wants to change his character, he has to consciously work on his thoughts. Until the inside is taken care of, the habit will not stop. No habit can stop until it is dealt with on the inside. It is the heart that matters most in character.

The second fundamental truth about character is that it is your true beauty. Your true beauty is not in your clothes, make-up or look; it is much more in your character. That is why character is the most important part of lasting success. To lack character is to be naked.

Another fundamental truth about character is that character is not a gift; it is consciously cultivated. You cultivate, nurture and build character. It takes a conscious step because that is what determines your lasting success.

Below are attributes of a godly character:

Honesty: 2 Cor. 8:21 – Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
Honesty is the state of truthfulness. Nothing empowers people like truth. Honest people tell the truth. They are straight-forward and do not cheat. If you are found to be dishonest, you will lose respect with people. Let God trust you and let men also trust you. Let your boss trust you too.

Discipline: 1 Cor.14:40 – Let all things be done decently and in order.
1 cor. 6:12 – All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

Discipline is bringing yourself under a law; it is self-control. Discipline is willingness to take orders. Discipline affects all aspects of life; even punctuality to duty. You have to discipline yourself in timing, attitude, and accountability. There is no serious minded man who will not respect time; don’t do business with anybody who does not have respect for time.

You should discipline yourself when it comes to money. You don’t use money meant for feeding to buy clothes; that is lack of discipline. If you are given money to keep, don’t touch it; keep it as it was given to you.

You should also be disciplined with sleep. I have never seen a successful man who sleeps too much. All successful men don’t sleep too much. Poor people sleep too much. Poverty is not about physical cash; it has to do with the mindset.

As you do these, may God cause you to succeed like never before in Jesus name –Amen!

Floodwaters Reach Near Entrance of Thai Cave Where 13 Are Missing – Urban Christian News

Floodwaters have reached near the entrance of a Thai cave despite attempts to drain the water so rescuers can search farther into the complex for 12 boys and their soccer coach now missing for a sixth day.

An effort to drill a hole from outside seemed to succeed initially, causing water to gush out. But the chambers and passageways that lead farther into the cave remain flooded, thwarting rescuers’ advance.

Ekchawin Longpinit from Thai Underground Water Department said the team that dug until 1 a.m. to a depth of 30 meters (98 feet) did not found any wells that would successfully drain water. About a dozen workers were drilling at the same spot Friday morning.

Officials are also trying to find hidden shafts in the mountainside that might offer access.

DCLM Daily Manna 29 June, 2018 by Pastor Kumuyi – Don’t Keep God Away

Topic: Don’t Keep God Away [DCLM Daily Manna Friday June 29, 2018]

Text: Psalm 107:1-9 (KJV)

Key Verse: “They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in” (Psalm 107:4).

MESSAGE:

Billionaire founder of Microsoft Corporations, Bill Gates, was criticised by Christians across the globe when he made this comment: “…In terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient. There’s a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning”. To him, going to church on Sunday to worship and serve God in truth and in spirit is a waste of time.

As humans, we try to solve our problems ourselves and keep God away until the situation is aggravated.

When the situation further worsens, and life is now at risk, we begin to cry unto God for deliverance. The people involved in the Bible passage for today appeared to have started a journey attempting to cross the wilderness into a city of habitation without asking for guidance or direction. Missing their way in the vast wilderness, they wandered from place to place, but in their pride and self-confidence, they kept relying on their human intellect until they became hungry and thirsty and their souls fainted within them. That was when they called upon God, who in His mercy delivered and revived them, leading them to the city of habitation.

Many people have discovered that their keep-God-away attitude is a recipe for paralysis, because man was created by God and depends on Him for his sustenance. But many times, we want to run our “show” ourselves. We believe going to church and worshipping God is a waste of time. Therefore, we go to work for extra pay on Sundays. We trust in our wisdom, training and money to solve every problem that confronts us until we get into a problem that our money and knowledge cannot solve. We should make God our companion at all times by regularly fellowshipping in His presence and seeking the counsel in His word in every situation we find ourselves.

Thought For The Day: Seek God while He may be found.
