Christian Convert Describes Abusive Interrogation by Authorities in Iran – Urban Christian News

A 19-year-old Christian convert in Iran has described the abusive way in which she was treated by authorities as she was interrogated, with the questioning intently focused on trying to make her admit to “illicit” sexual relations with men.

Fatemeh Mohammadi, who served six months in the notorious Evin Prison for her faith, described how she was treated in a letter on Monday to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

Mohammadi, who was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran earlier this year on charges of “membership in evangelical groups,” “engaging in Christian activities,” and “acting against national security through propagating against the regime,” says that she was repeatedly asked about sexual relations by officials.

She replied to them, “I have never been involved in any relationship; you are slandering me. What you are doing is not right or moral.”

The young woman says that officials insisted they have evidence to prove their charges of sexual relations, but did not present any.

“No matter how much I insisted that I have never had a sexual relationship, they would not accept it,” she said.

She was moved in and out of solitary confinement while multiple interrogators mocked her and continued questioning her about perceived immorality.

“I was feeling very sick during that session, and felt an excruciating pain in my chest; I could barely breathe and started to cough incessantly,” Mohammadi shared.

Hillsong’s Joel Houston Calls Evolution ‘Undeniable,’ Sparks Debate

Hillsong’s Joel Houston Calls Evolution ‘Undeniable,’ Sparks Debate

Worship leader and Christian songwriter Joel Houston launched a social media debate this week then he defended evolution and said the Big Bang was God’s design.

Houston, who sings with Hillsong UNITED and is lead pastor of Hillsong NYC, was answering a Twitter question from a fan about the song “So Will I,” which references evolution in the line, “A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath; evolving in pursuit of what You said.”

“Evolution is undeniable—created by God as a reflective means of displaying nature’s pattern of renewal in pursuance of God’s Word—an ode to the nature of the creative God it reflects—and only ever in part—not the SOURCE!” he wrote on Twitter Monday. “Science and faith aren’t at odds. God created the Big-Bang.”

After pushback, he added additional thoughts.

“Context—things evolve, they change and adapt, I DON’T believe in evolution as a theory of SOURCE, I believe it’s merely a pattern of nature—created by God, reflecting Nature’s desire for renewal, survival, new life—from, through and ultimately to—God,” Houston wrote. “Let me also add—God is WAY bigger than we think. We can try box Him any way we like, with science, theology, a tweet or a song—HE IS UNDIMINISHED by our limitations.”

Later he added, “If God’s creative process was an easy working week, or finely crafted…

UK Government Says Transgender People Will Not Be Legally Entitled to Female-Only or Male-Only Bathrooms – Urban Christian News

The U.K. government has responded to a petition demanding that women be heard from when it comes to transgender people using single-sex spaces, by vowing that the latter will not be legally entitled to female or male-only bathrooms.

“Any GRA reform will not change the protected characteristics in the Equality Act nor the exceptions under the Equality Act that allow provision for single and separate sex spaces,” said the Government Equalities Office, speaking of the Gender Recognition Act.

“Providers of women-only services can continue to provide services in a different way, or even not provide services to trans individuals, provided it is objectively justified on a case-by-case basis,” it added, as reported by The Independent on Monday.

“The same can be said about toilets, changing rooms or single-sex activities. Providers may exclude trans people from facilities of the sex they identify with, providing it is a proportionate means of meeting a legitimate aim.”

An official petition to the U.K. government, which as of Thursday morning had over 12,000 signatures, demanded that women be consulted when it comes to changes to policies affecting gender.

“We call for women to be consulted on how to protect women and girls’ rights, safety, privacy and dignity,” asks the petition started by feminist groups, such as The Sex and Gender Ethics Society, A Woman’s Place UK, Fair Play for Women, and #ManFriday.

Scientist Who Helped Popularize the Label Explains Why

Bring up the term “Alpha Male,” and what usually comes to mind for most people is an intimidating leader, strong and perhaps a bit domineering. While some would even extend it to men who would bully and loom over others, it’s not the original meaning of the label, according to a primatologist who helped popularize the term.

Frans de Waal, a scientist who studied primate social behavior and helped come up with the term “alpha male” in the 1980s, recently took the time during his recent TED talk to clarify what the label really means.

Pixabay/12019In a recent TED talk, a primatologist explained how the popular perception of “alpha males” as brutish, harsh leaders is not exactly accurate.

In his research on chimpanzee behavior, “alpha male” was a term that has layers of nuance to it, and not just a general-purpose term for men who bully, intimidate and even harass their way to the top.

“I am actually partly responsible for the term alpha male because I wrote this book ‘Chimpanzee Politics,’ which was recommended by Newt Gingrich to freshmen congressmen,” de Waal began, as quoted by the Business Insider.

In fact, Alpha Males in the original sense of the term turned out to be more in touch with their sensitive side than what is now commonly thought. The same goes for the reverse — just because a man can overwhelm his peers does not mean he’s an Alpha, either.

“Someone who is big and strong and intimidates and insults everyone is not necessarily an alpha male,” de Waal explained, adding that the Alpha chimps in his original study got to the top by also being good at winning over the pack with…

Teacher’s Restoration of Church’s 500-Y-O St. George Effigy Faces Criticism as It Goes Viral – Urban Christian News

An arts and crafts teacher’s restoration of a 16th-Century wooden statue of St George in a Spanish church has been ridiculed by the town’s mayor as it has gone viral around the world.

The polychrome effigy of St. George, the patron saint of England and other nations, received a significant make-over at the Church of St. Michael in the town of Estella, but instead of praise has earned much ridicule, as The Guardian reported on Tuesday.

The church hired the teacher to freshen up the 500-year-old statue, but the result left the Roman soldier with a rosy pink face and a red-and-grey suit of armor, with observers around the world, including Estella’s own mayor, criticizing the new look.

“The parish decided on its own to take action to restore the statue and gave the job to a local handicrafts teacher. The council wasn’t told and neither was the regional government of Navarre,” mayor Koldo Leoz said.

Explaining his objections, Leoz continued:

“It’s not been the kind of restoration that it should have been for this 16th-century statue. They’ve used plaster and the wrong kind of paint and it’s possible that the original layers of paint have been lost.”

The mayor revealed that experts have been summoned to determine whether it is possible for the restoration work to be undone.

“This is an expert job it should have been done by experts,” he declared.

Two more Chilean bishops forced to resign following abuse scandal

Last month all of Chile’s active bishops offered to quit for collectively failing to protect children from paedophile priests.

The Vatican announced that Francis was allowing Rancagua Bishop Alejandro Goic Karmelic and Talca Bishop Horacio del Carmen Valenzuela Abarca to resign.

That brings to five the total of resignations accepted so far out of the 31 offered.

In the region of the Rancagua diocese, 14 priests have been accused of having had sex with minors. Bishop Goic had served as head of the Chilean church’s child protection commission.

Francis had already accepted the resignation of Osorno Bishop Juan Barros, once a top aide to Chile’s most notorious priest.

People Who Hate Stress Should Avoid These Jobs

Some people thrive on pressure, but there are others who can’t deal quite as well. For the latter group, some jobs just aren’t well suited for them — that means steering clear of careers in medicine, law enforcement, and some of the busier customer service occupations.

While there are individuals who can laugh off the stress and daily grind of even the most demanding of jobs, high stress is a serious issue that affects everyone and has become linked to the national issue with the skyrocketing rates of suicides in the country.

Pixabay/DarkoStojanovicNot surprisingly, many of the occupations considered prone to stress are in the medical field, according to data from the Occupational Information Network.

For those who understand themselves well enough to know that they can crumble under pressure, there are more than enough lucrative careers in science, tech and education well suited for them, as the Business Insider pointed out.

A high tolerance to stress, after all, is basically a requirement for some jobs given a high “stress tolerance” rating by the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), a US Department of Labor database full of detailed information on jobs.

Law enforcement jobs are high on the list, but so is rules enforcement. Umpires, referees and other sports officials have high-stress jobs that require split-second attention, all while bearing the complaints from players and fans.

Roles that deal with mental health are in the list as well, including counseling jobs, psychiatric nurses and aides, as well as social workers.

Customer service professions that bring people to deal with…

There are 2 GOP Senators Who May Block Justice Kennedy’s Replacement

There are 2 GOP Senators Who May Block Justice Kennedy’s Replacement

Legal observers on both the left and the right said Thursday if Senate Republicans stay unified, then Democrats will be unable to block President Trump’s nominee to replace retired Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

But will the 51 GOP senators stick together to form a narrow majority in the 100-seat chamber? Republicans could fail to lose one vote – with Vice President Mike Pence breaking a 50-50 tie – but a loss of two votes would doom the confirmation.

The two most likely GOP senators to flip could be Maine Sen. Susan Collins and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski — two women who are pro-choice on abortion and who could be hesitant to confirm a nominee who may vote to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Kennedy was pro-Roe and part of a five-vote bloc that backed legalized abortion.

“I view Roe v. Wade as being settled law,” Collins said Tuesday, according to CBS News. “It’s clearly precedent. I always look for judges who respect precedent.”

Could Collins back a justice who opposes Roe?

“I always look at judicial temperament, qualifications, experience, the ABA [American Bar Association] rating and their respect for the rule of law and the constitution,” Collins said. “Those are exactly the same criteria that I will apply to whomever the president nominates.”

Collins and Murkowski last year backed…

Teacher’s Restoration of Church’s 500-Y-O St. George Effigy Goes Viral, Compared to ‘Monkey Christ’

Church thief now studying Bible in prison

Derby Crown Court heard how Richard West, a 43-year-old father-of-four caused more than £12,000 of damage when he committed eight break-ins, between December 25th and January 6th.

He targeted the Central United Reformed Church, through a third floor window but unable to get into the safe, “all he could find to steal” was the wine and cakes.

His lawyer Adam Brown claimed his repeat offending was linked to returning to his drug addiction after his marriage fell apart.

Brown explained: “His heroin and crack cocaine habit saw him spending between £300 and £400 a day to feed his addiction but since his incarceration he is now doing Bible studies and going to the chapel at the prison.

“He bitterly regrets what he did and would like to apologise to the people he’s affected in person. He mostly regrets the burglary at the church which he acknowledges is the worst one and the effect it has had on those there.”

In its Victim Personal Statement, the church said: “It’s a disgrace that a church has been broken into. We have an elderly congregation which carries out a lot of work for charity and our cleaner is now afraid to go inside alone.

“This is an awful crime.”

Judge Jonathan Bennett sentenced West to 22 months in prison, describing him as a “one-man crime wave that caused enormous disruption”.

Other items West stole from different properties include roof tiles, cigarettes,…
