Crisis Pregnancy Centers Win at Supreme Court; California Loses

The U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday sided with the pro-life community in reversing a lower court ruling that would have forced crisis pregnancy centers to promote abortions.

At issue was a California law, the Reproductive Freedom, Accountability, Comprehensive Care, and Transparency Act (FACT Act), that required licensed crisis pregnancy centers to notify women that California offers free or low-cost abortions. The centers also were required to give women a phone number where they could schedule an abortion. Further, the FACT Act required unlicensed crisis pregnancy centers to tell women the centers were not licensed to provide medical services.

Crisis pregnancy centers often are supported by pro-life organizations and churches and offer free counseling, pregnancy tests and ultrasounds to women. They also assist pregnant women financially.

Crisis pregnancy centers in California sued to overturn the law, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld it.

But in a 5-4 ruling by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, the justices reversed the Ninth Circuit’s opinion and sent it back to that court “for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”

“We hold that petitioners are likely to succeed on the merits of their claim that the FACT Act violates the First Amendment,” Thomas wrote.

The law, he said, raises the question of whether California was…

People Who Are Good With Money Always Splurge on These Smart Buys

Having a job and the means to earn money is a blessing that people could always be more thankful for, and spending on the right things will go a long way in making sure that one will have enough when the unexpected happens. The people who are good with their money go one step further than everyone else, though.

The things they decide to buy are usually the stuff that helps them be more productive, healthy and inspired. This habit feeds them into a self-fulfilling cycle that, more often than not, sets them up for success in their finances and life in general. As a rule, they are also prepared for everything from vacations to emergencies, according to Kimberly Palmer of Nerdwallet.

Pixabay/stevepbExercise and monthly gym memberships are some of the ways people splurge on their own wellbeing.

“A good rule of thumb to determine if you are overspending is to apply the 50/30/20 budgeting method, where 50% of your budget goes to needs, 20% to savings and debt repayment, and 30% to wants,” Palmer explained.

How one spends this 30 percent separates smart spending from mindless splurging. At the top of the list of those who are good with finances — products that help them earn more money, according to Business Insider. Similarly, Palmer recommends investing in services that save people time, as well.

High-quality cookware and kitchen appliances not only last for decades, they also save people even more money by nudging them towards cooking for themselves. They eat healthier and save so much that way, as Palmer pointed out.

“I always splurge on this,” she added.

Another avenue for spending that’s sure…

Billy Graham Devotional 27 June 2018 – Who Am I?

Topic: Who Am I? [Billy Graham’s Devotional Wednesday June 27, 2018]

What a glorious Lord! He who daily bears our burdens also gives us our salvation. — Psalm 68:19 (TLB)

Edward Dahlberg, the writer, observed, “At 19, I was a stranger to myself. At 40, I asked, ‘Who am I?’ At 50, I concluded I would never know.” This unexplored personal wilderness is the home of millions of people. Ninety-two percent of all Canadian university students, according to June Callwood, the Toronto sociologist, don’t really know who they are. The Bible says that man is an immortal soul. When God made man in the first place, He created him and “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). One’s soul is the essence, the core, the eternal and real person. And he will be restless until he opens his life to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Prayer for the day: Almighty God, knowing I am Your child is all the assurance I need.

End Times? Thousands are Having Microchips Implanted in Their Hands

End Times? Thousands are Having Microchips Implanted in Their Hands

Thousands of Swedish citizens are having microchips implanted under their skin to replace credit cards, keys and personal identification – an invasive action that is sure to draw concern from privacy advocates and perhaps End Times theologians, too.

Agence France-Presse reported that about 3,000 citizenshave taken the step out of a sense of convenience.

“Swedes have gone on to be very active in microchipping, with scant debate about issues surrounding its use, in a country keen on new technology and where the sharing of personal information is held up as a sign of a transparent society,” AFP reported.

Ulrika Celsing, a 28-year-old Swede, has a microchipin her hand. To enter her work, she waves her hand in front of a box and then types in a code, AFP reported. No key or physical ID card is needed.

“It was fun to try something new and to see what one could use it for to make life easier in the future,” she said.

The chip also has replaced her gym card, AFP reported. Sweden’s national railway allows people to use microchips in place of tickets. Patrons can board the train by having their hand scanned.

Futurism.com’s Victor Tangermann expressed concern over the technology, which uses near-field communication (NFC) and “can be hacked with the use of a specialized reader and a lot of coding skills.”

Christian communities in Nigeria being ‘hunted down’ as violence intensifies

According to research by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Muslim Fulani herder militia have perpetrated at least 106 attacks on communities in central Nigeria in the first quarter of 2018 alone, claiming 1,061 lives.

However, Dr Khataza Gondwe from the charity told Premier the clashes between the two groups in the past doesn’t reflect the recent attacks in the Middle Belt region since Thursday that left 86 people dead.

She explained: “As long as you frame it as a clash, that implies that there’s mutual violence.

“However the violence that happened over the weekend in Plateau state for example… this was attacks on people in their homes or as they were coming back from a funeral. You cannot describe those as clashes.”

Nigeria is set to launch a major security operation to quell the spike of violence in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari warned against reprisals after the “deeply unfortunate killings across a number of communities” in central Plateau State as the military and police tried to end the bloodshed, saying “no efforts will be spared” to find the attackers.

However, footage from Jos showed angry people waving machetes and sticks shouting at passing security forces as they weaved around overturned and burning vehicles.

Marvel President: Future Films Will Include LGBT Superheroes

Marvel President: Future Films Will Include LGBT Superheroes

The president of Marvel Studios says future films will include lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender superheroes, although he’s not giving any hints as to who it will be.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige made the comments during an interview with The Playlistwebsite, which had asked him about the absence of LGBT characters in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The Playlist reported the exchange:

Playlist: “When are we getting a Gay, Bi, LGBTQ, out character in the MCU?  Is it even in the works?”

Feige: “Yes.”

The Playlist: “That’s the answer?”

Feige: “Yeah, that’s the answer.”

The Playlist: “It’s not someone we’ve seen yet, I’m guessing?”

Feige: “Both.”

The Playlist: “Both?”

Feige: “Both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen.”

The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood said Feige’s last answer “likely confirms” that Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok is bisexual – a theory which Tessa Thompson (who plays Valkyrie) and the director said was the case, even if the scene in question was cut from the film.

Other films in development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe include Spider-Man: Far From Home and Captain Marvel.

Marvel Comics have had gay characters for more than 25 years. The first major character to come out as LGBT was Northstar in 1992, who was married in 2012.

Pope’s visit to Ireland sees high demand in ticket registration

The Pope chose the Republic of Ireland as the location for the tri-annual event World Meeting of Families between 21st-26th August.

It’s a gathering for families which aims to celebrate, pray and reflect upon the importance of marriage and the family as the cornerstone of life, society and the Church.

The team running the event say they have had an unprecedented amount of interest. At 5am on Monday morning, they released 500,000 tickets for the closing mass in Phoenix Park in Dublin and by 5pm the same day 285,000 were gone.

Tickets for Pope Francis’ visit to Knock Shrine, a Roman Catholic pilgrimage site, were fully booked in less than five hours.

4,000 people on facebook though have said they are ‘interested’ in an event called ‘Say no to the Pope’, with 1,100 people clicking ‘going’.

The group have said they are peacefully protesting the Pope’s visit and are registering for free tickets but will not turn up.

One user posted: “Keep up the good work everyone! This isn’t about depriving people of faith their right to worship.

“This is a peaceful protest against a truly corrupt organisation which has caused incalculable harm to a great many people and which continues to do so; which has permitted child abuse and which obstructs and perverts the course of justice on a massive scale in order to cover it up.”

The user also cites misogyny, homophobia and hypocrisy as reasons…

‘Duck Dynasty’ Star Debates Pastor on Guns, Violence and Evil

(Photo: Pure Flix Digital)“Duck Dynasty” star Missy Robertson and the Rev. Pat Mahoney — a signee of the Prayers and Action petition, a document that calls for American lawmakers to “pass common-sense gun laws” and for believers to commit to prayer — recently joined PureFlix.com’s “Pure Talk” to hash the issue out.

Everyone agrees that gun violence in America is a deadly problem, but there’s a deep divide over how to solve the tragic conundrum. While some herald the need for heart change and the battle against pervasive evil, others believe increased gun control is the answer — and still others see the solution as a mixture of thoughts, prayers, and legislative action.

Real Also: Candace Cameron Bure Responds to Those Who Mock Prayer

“Duck Dynasty” star Missy Robertson and Rev. Pat Mahoney — a signee of the Prayers and Action petition, a document that calls for American lawmakers to “pass common-sense gun laws” and for believers to commit to prayer — recently joined PureFlix.com’s “Pure Talk” to hash the issue out.

Both Robertson, whose famed family is known for being hunters, and Mahoney, who has become involved in causes like March for Our Lives, agreed that prayer is powerful and that God holds the ability to change hearts.

“We’re backing away from good versus evil and there has to be good if there is evil,” Robertson said. “No matter what side of the [gun violence] issue you are on, we all agree that that is … evil behavior. Well, if that is evil, there is an opposite and that is good.”

Watch the powerful discussion below:

Robertson went on to explain that God created the…

Here’s How to Make the Most of Summer Vacation Travels

Here’s How to Make the Most of Summer Vacation Travels

When she was 12, Anjali Mitter Duva spent a year living in India with her Indian father and Jewish American mother. During a school vacation, the family traveled to Rajasthan, a desert region in the northwestern part of the country. After a long, uncomfortable train ride, they reached the medieval city of Jaisalmer, where a young teenager’s angsty frustration with family travel was quickly transformed into what she describes as pure awe.

“It’s completely gorgeous, with a stunningly blue sky and everything else in shades of orange, yellow, ochre and sandstone,” said Duva, who lives in Arlington, Mass. “Everything is super-saturated.”

In that stunning environment, Duva was particularly captivated by a local girl performing a sacred dance called kathak.

“I had been plucked out of my life for this year,” she recalls. “And here was my counterpart, this other 12-year-old girl. I remember this feeling of what made me be me, what made her be her, and how we were both there at the same place at the same time.”

That awe stayed with Duva. Nearly two decades after her trip, she published her first novel, “Faint Promise of Rain” (She Writes Press, 2014), set in the desert of Rajasthan and featuring as its protagonist a young Hindu dancer.

Travel, psychologists say, can change lives, especially when it’s to destinations that elicit awe and wonder. The feelings that…

French president in Vatican meeting with Pope Francis

The two men spoke for nearly an hour in the pope’s library in the Apostolic Palace.

After they emerged from their closed-door talks, Mr Macronput a hand on Francis’ shoulder, and then kissed him on both cheeks.

Francis reciprocated the warmth, gripping the French leader’s arm and then shaking his hands vigorously and smiling broadly as he said goodbye. He also shook hands with Mr Macron’s wife, Brigitte.

As is his custom with guests, Francis gave Mr Macron a medal depicting St Martin of Tours, who gave his cloak to a poor man.

Francis had ushered the French leader into his studio, where the two men chatted for a few minutes before the media were escorted out of the room.

Last week, the pontiff urged nations to welcome all the refuges they can properly manage. Italy is angry that France sends back migrants who illegally enter France from Italy.

France recently criticised Italy’s new populist government for refusing to allow docking by a private rescue ship with more than 600 migrants aboard. Spain eventually gave the ship safe harbour.

Mr Macron’s visit was strictly Vatican-related, with no meetings scheduled with Italian leaders.
