Mark 8:17, “And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?”

Text: Matthew 16:1-12; Mark 8:11-21

Just a few days before this instance, hardened hearts caused Jesus’ disciples to be amazed when they saw Jesus walk on the water to them. Here, Jesus’ statements reveal some of the characteristics of someone with a hardened heart.

First, a hard heart keeps us from perceiving spiritual truths. This is why everyone in a church service hears exactly the same message yet, some will receive while others won’t. It’s not the Word that is the variable, but rather the condition of the hearts. A hard heart stops spiritual perception.

Second, a hardened heart stops us from understanding spiritual truth. When a person doesn’t understand God’s Word, Satan finds no resistance when he comes to steal it away.

Third, a hard heart keeps us from remembering. This isn’t to say that we can’t recall facts or scriptures. As related in Mark 8:19-20, the disciples remembered the facts of the two miraculous feedings, but they had forgotten any spiritual lessons they might have learned. Likewise, some people can quote scripture or remember what the sermon was about, but they can’t perceive the spiritual life in the message or retain what they did perceive.

A hardened heart blinds us to any spiritual perception and keeps us thinking only in the natural realm. Small faith and a hardened heart are the same. Hebrews 3:12-13 parallels an evil heart of unbelief to a hardened heart. It takes great faith to keep our heart sensitive to God. Seek Him with your whole heart today.

More and more I am becoming aware of the truth that people change people as much as ideas change people. The power of personality is strong. One could find many illustrations to prove that often personality is greater than the idea. Such is the case with Christianity. The secret of the power of Christianity is not in its ethics. It is not in Christian ideas or philosophy, although Christianity has a philosophical set of ideas. The secret of Christianity is found in a Person, and that Person is the Lord Jesus Christ. Men have discovered other philosophical and ethical systems, but they have not found another Jesus Christ. No one in history can match Him.

Prayer for the day: When I tell others of Your love, help me to hide my personality in Yours, Lord Jesus.

Topic: Nobody Likes Me [Our Daily Bread 26 Saturday May, 2018]

Read: Psalm 142, Bible in a Year: 1 Chronicles 28–29; John 9:24–41

No one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life. Psalm 142:4

As a child, when I felt lonely, rejected, or sorry for myself, my mother would sometimes attempt to cheer me up by singing a popular ditty: “Nobody likes me, everybody hates me. I think I’ll go eat worms.” After a smile came from my downcast face, she’d help me see the many special relationships and reasons for gratitude I truly did have.

When I read that David felt no one cared for him, that ditty rings in my ears. Yet David’s pain wasn’t at all exaggerated. Where I had feelings of loneliness typical for my age, David actually had good reason to feel abandoned. He wrote these words in the dark depths of a cave where he hid from Saul, who pursued him with murderous plans (1 Samuel 22:1; 24:3–10). David had been anointed as Israel’s future king (16:13), had spent years in Saul’s service, but now he lived “on the move,” always fearing for his life. In the midst of the loneliness David felt, he cried out to God as his “refuge” and “portion in the land of the living” (Psalm 142:5).

Like David, we can cry out to God when we feel alone, giving voice to our feelings in the safety of His love. God never minimizes our loneliness. He wants to be our companion in the dark caves of our lives. Even when we think no one cares for our life, God cares!

Prayer: Lord, You are my friend when I feel alone. Thank You for being with me in the dark caves of life.

God is our friend in seasons of loneliness.

Insight:

The heading to Psalm 142 says, “A maskil of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.” But we might also call this song “David’s cry.” The poetic imagery woven into the lyric rings with authenticity because it flows out of David’s actual experiences. Twice he fled to a cave in fear for his life. Few of us can identify with that situation literally, but nearly all of us can relate to David’s metaphorical cave of loneliness and despair. When he uses words like “cry” (v. 1) and “complaint” (v. 2), we know how he feels. His “spirit grows faint” (v. 3), a “snare” has been set for him (v. 3), and “no one is concerned” (v. 4). David even sees his dilemma as “my prison” (v. 7). Yet he knows the trustworthiness of the One he cries out to, and he anticipates a day when “the righteous will gather about [him]” (v. 7). He will not always be desperately lonely.

Does an emotional cave imprison you today? Consider writing out your thoughts in raw honesty and giving them to God. How might that kind of honesty change your prayers? Tim Gustafson

Once you make up your mind to keep the commands of Jesus and begin to allow the Word to dwell in you richly, the Name of Jesus will become far more powerful to you. It will become more than just a word. It will become a force that will cause every circumstance and every demon that tries to stand in your way to bow its knee to your command.

I tell you, the Name of Jesus works. There is far greater power in it than any of us have yet realized.

My faith is so set on the authority of the Name of Jesus that there are times I just say, “In the Name” and the power of God comes on the scene.

In fact, I’ve discovered that the Name of Jesus—just the Name alone—is effective when spoken by a Word-abiding believer. Revelation 19:13 says the Name of Jesus is the Word of God! So, when an evil spirit is trying to bring sickness, poverty, depression or any other garbage into my household, I don’t have to quote every scripture I know to stop him. I can just point my finger at him and say, “Jesus!” That’s like throwing the whole Word of God in his face at one time!

Discover for yourself what the exalted Name can do. Begin to speak it with confidence and authority. There is power in the Name of Jesus.

Text: Exodus 2:1-10 (KJV)

Key Verse: “And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months” (Exodus 2:2).

MESSAGE:

Many years ago, there lived in London, England, a master musician, who adopted a street urchin. Each day, the musician took the boy to his studio and taught him. Over the years, the boy grew to become a genius in music. He made his first operatic appearance at the age of twenty-one. Music lovers within the country came to see him play. The master musician said to the young man, “Son, do not pay any attention to the people. Fix your eyes on me.” Each time he played, the crowd went wild with enthusiasm, women threw bouquets at his feet; but he failed to notice them. His eyes were fixed on the old master who was standing on the top gallery.

Moses was born at a troublous time in the history of the Israelites. His parents found him a goodly child and hid him three months from Pharaoh’s rampaging army. At three months, when they could not hide him any longer, they put him by the river’s brink and set his sister to watch. Through divine arrangement, he was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter but trained by his parents to fulfil the purpose of his life as the eventual deliverer of Israel.

It is never the will of God for Christian parents to have ungodly children. From an early age, there is need to teach our children that the Christian life should be lived as though they are in a race which must be won at all cost. Let every conversation endear them to holiness which qualifies for heaven.

The master musician in our introductory story, instructed the young musician to focus on him and not on the public. Christian parents should point their children to Jesus. “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2).

Thought For The Day: It is better to have the womb shut than raise ungodly, vagabond children.

Scripture: The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil. Proverb 19:23

Thought For The Day: Whatever makes you guilty makes you vulnerable to evil.

Our anchor Scripture makes it clear that the fear of God brings satisfaction in life. The fear of God also makes a person escape evil.

Job is a practical example of someone who feared God; he was perfect in all his ways, and as a result of his fear for God, God made a hedge of protection around him (Job 1:10). This means, the fear of the Lord is a shield against the visitation of evil; the fear of the Lord establishes a Divine shield of protection around a person.

Now, what happens where the fear of the Lord is absent? Two things are imminent:

1. The Absence of the fear of the LORD is the violation of the conscience
It is the absence of the fear of the Lord that establishes a person in a life of guilt. And, whatever makes you guilty makes you vulnerable to evil.

2. The Absence of the fear of God makes people to hurt others without feeling
When the fear of God is absent, someone can hurt their wife, husband, sister, colleagues, etc. without feelings. The absence of the fear of God is the reason people defraud and injure others without human feelings. Where a person exists like that, he is vulnerable to destruction. Judas Iscariot, Achan and Absalom, all died because of the absence of the fear of God in their lives.

Beloved, my counsel is, ensure your conscience remains healthy; live perpetually in the fear of God.

Remember this: Whatever makes you guilty makes you vulnerable to evil.

Assignments:
1. Maintain a conscience void of sin, guilt and offence.
2. Do not hurt or defraud people.
3. Live permanently in the fear of God.

Prayer: I receive the grace to live in Your fear in order to maintain a conscience void of sin, LORD, in Jesus’ Name
