Rick Patrick, an Alabama pastor, publisher of SBC Today and executive director of the Connect 316 ministry, has apologized for a Facebook post mocking prominent evangelical supporters of women as the #MeToo movement rises in churches.

Patrick’s post came as prominent Southern Baptist leader Paige Patterson stepped down as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary on Tuesday amid his controversial remarks about domestic violence and divorce. The Washington Post also reported fresh allegations Tuesday that Patterson encouraged a woman who said she had been raped not to report it to the police and told her to forgive her alleged assailant.

In his controversial tweet which is now being heavily circulated online, Patrick appears to take aim at evangelicals who have been vocal supporters of women in light of the Patterson controversy, including ERLC President Russell Moore; Wade Burleson, lead pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Enid, Oklahoma, and Ed Stetzer, who is Billy Graham Distinguished Chair at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.

WASHINGTON — Pastor Greg Laurie asserted that recent geopolitical events suggest we are living in the last days, and he urged Christians to take every opportunity to share the Gospel.

One of the students who was injured in the horrific Santa Fe, Texas High School shooting last week said he survived by the “grace of God.”

The Christian Post reports that 16-year-old Rome Shubert was sitting in his art class when the shooter entered around 7:45 a.m. on Friday, May 18th.

Eight students and two teachers lost their lives in the shooting, and 10 others were injured. Although injured, Shubert thanked God his life was spared.

He told the Houston Chronicle that he did not at first realize that he had been shot in the back of the head.

“I was just scared for my life, and my adrenaline was so high I had no idea I was shot,” he said.

“I was sitting doing my work, and he [the shooter] walked in, tossed something on the desks behind me,” Shubert recalled. “And then three loud pops, and I jumped under my table and flipped it in front of me, and I guess he ran out in the hall, and I took off out the back door, and when I was running, I realized I was shot in the back of my head.”

Doctors later said Shubert had the “perfect scenario,” and that it was a miracle he was not dead.

As for Shubert, he said it was “Definitely [the] grace of God, I had an angel on my shoulder and He’s watching over me.”

The Southern Baptist Convention has now officially ended its ties with the District of Columbia Baptist Convention, after the latter refused to remove a church whose co-pastors are a married lesbian couple.

Interim SBC Executive Committee President D. August Boto said in a statement on Tuesday through Baptist Press that “the formal relationship between the SBC and the DCBC has come to an end.”

Calvary Baptist Church in Washington voted in favor of installing lesbian couple Maria Swearingen and Sally Sarratt as co-pastors in January 2017, which sparked the controversy.

The Executive Committee adopted a recommendation in February that gave the DCBC 90 days to “secure” the “removal of any churches from its fellowship that have demonstrated a faith or practice affirming, approving or endorsing homosexual behavior.” But no action was taken by the DC convention.

Approximately 6,000 people attended the United Methodist Women’s quadrennial Assembly, where leaders denounced the denomination’s recent voting down of an amendment to their Book of Discipline which said that God is not “male or female.”

Recently, the United Methodist Church announced that their annual conferences narrowly voted down Proposed Constitutional Amendment I, which included the claim that “it is contrary to Scripture and to logic to say that God is male or female, as maleness and femaleness are characteristics of human bodies and cultures, not characteristics of the divine.”

A group of female United Methodist Bishops were present for the Assembly’s closing ceremony, in which they spoke against the rejection of two proposed amendments to the Book of Discipline that centered on the issue of gender equality.

Bishop Cynthia Fierro-Harvey of the Louisiana Episcopal Area, one of the nine women clergy at the ceremony, noted that in response to the amendment’s failing, female UMC bishops “made a statement to The United Methodist Church that provided a glimpse into the need for equity and gender equality for women and girls in our churches and…

Former Southern Baptist Convention President Paige Patterson has agreed to resign from his position as head of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary amid various controversies, including comments he made years ago where he appeared to endorse having abused wives remain with their husbands.

“After much prayer and a more than 13-hour discussion regarding challenges facing the Institution, including those of enrollment, financial, leadership and institutional identity, the Board determined to move in the direction of new leadership for the benefit of the future mission of the Seminary,” stated SWBTS in a statement released Wednesday morning.

Patterson has accepted a “president emeritus” position with the seminary and will be allowed to live on campus as a theologian-in-residence along with his wife. 

“The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) board of trustees is grateful for the contributions Dr. and Mrs. Paige Patterson have made since his presidency began in 2003.”
