Professor Robert Hazell and Dr Bob Morris produced two reports on the topic: Swearing in the New King and Inaugurating a New Reign.

Morris told Premier’s News Hour that the oath Prince Charles will have to make when he transitions to King is outdated.

“We’re not saying the coronation itself shouldn’t be Christian, but there might be ways of responding to a situation where we’re no longer just Christians,” he said.

“We’re certainly no longer just Anglican Christians. A little over half the population is prepared to say it has no religious affiliation at all, and now of course we have the important number of people who belong to non-Christian faiths.”

He added that the oath requires Charles to swear to support a Church which is established only in England and not in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.

The report states that the new King could “make promises in tune with a more secular and diverse society and a more decentralised Union state”.

Another recommendation is that people of other denominations and faiths would attend the ceremony.

Morris said: “The coronation needs to reflect that greater diversity: it will define not just the monarchy, but the whole nation whom the monarch is to represent”.

Staff at the UK embassy in the Eastern European’s capital, Minsk, unveiled a rainbow flag last Thursday to mark International Day Against Homophobia – an annual initiative started ten years ago.

In a statement, the country’s Interior Ministry accused the UK of creating “problems where they do not exist”, adding that the Day has never been widely celebrated in Belarus.

It continued: “The reason for this is obvious – the overwhelming majority of Belarusians stick to traditional family values, including Christian ones. And such statements are a challenge to these values.”

The document went on to say heterosexual relationships were the “only way to reproduction” and it described relationships between same-sex couples as “fake” and “the erosion of the truth”.

Orthodox Christianity is the major religion in Belarus, but there are also significant Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish communities. Homosexuality is not illegal but it is considered taboo.

Belarus, which has been governed tightly by President Alexander Lukashenko since 1994, has been described as the last dictatorship in Europe.

In a video released by the UK embassy in Belarus last Thursday, the British Ambassador to Minsk warned that the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community “suffers greatly” in certain parts of the world.

Gemma Thomas died in November 2017, just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow.

Archbishop of Adelaide Philip Wilson was convicted on Tuesday in the Newcastle Local Court, north of Sydney, of concealing the sexual abuse of two altar boys by a paedophile priest in the 1970s.

The 67-year-old who has Alzheimer’s disease was released on bail and faces a prison term of up to two years when he is sentenced next month.

Wilson said he would stand aside on Friday after administrative arrangements were made to manage his archdiocese. He said he was still discussing the magistrate’s decision with his lawyers.

“While I do so, it is appropriate that, in the light of some of his Honor’s findings, I stand aside from my duties as archbishop,” Wilson said in a statement.

“If at any point in time it becomes necessary or appropriate for me to take more formal steps, including by resigning as archbishop, then I will do so,” he added. He has not said whether he is considering an appeal.

Wilson was once Australia’s highest-ranking archbishop as president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.
