Paris Knifeman’s Path From ‘Reserved’ Student to Terrorist

Khamzat Azimov, who kept his beard short over a youthful face, was not considered a major threat despite being on France’s two watchlists for suspected extremists since 2016.

“It was his relatives who alerted the security services, as opposed to his behaviour, actions or ideas” which might have drawn scrutiny, a source close to the inquiry told AFP.

Yet on Saturday night the 20-year-old described by neighbours as a quiet student spread terror throughout a bustling area of restaurants and theatres just a short stroll from the historic Paris opera house.

Former classmates from his Strasbourg high school described Azimov as a religious and “very discreet” student who liked video games and sports.

The eastern French town where he grew up is home to a large community of refugees from Chechnya who fled the Muslim-dominated Russian republic during two bloody separatist wars against Moscow-backed forces.

One ex-pupil told AFP: “Khamzat was quite calm, he kept himself to himself, he didn’t have a problem… He did Ramadan, he paid attention to girls.”

The man who declined to be identified added that Azimov “had a distinctive manner and was in contact with Syria where he wanted to go. But after the bac (exams) he left all that, he wanted to make a living.”

Another former pupil described a “normal student, not excellent but not bad either”.

“We knew he was Muslim but he did not show it,” the young woman added, saying he never talked about his birthplace Chechnya or the wars there.

– Family fled Chechnya –

Investigators have taken Azimov’s parents into custody…

‘We must not stop until she is home’, MP marks 15th birthday of girl held captive for her faith

Leah Sharibu was among 110 youngsters kidnapped by Boko Haram in the north-eastern village of Dapchi on 19th February this year.

Last month, the children were freed – all of them except five who died in the incident and Leah, who refused to denounce her beliefs in exchange for her freedom.

Dame Caroline Spelman MP, a Christian and the Conservative MP for Meriden, wrote in a blog: “On her 15th birthday, we must stand in solidarity with Leah Sharibu, the courageous young girl who is surrounded by terrorists renowned for their extreme brutality, yet refuses even to pretend to convert in order to regain her freedom.

“We must call ever more strongly for her release and safe return. And we must not stop until she is home.”

Mervyn Thomas, chief executive of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) – an organisation which has been highlighting Leah’s plight – wrote on Twitter: “It’s Leah Sharibu’s 15th birthday today, but she won’t be celebrating with her family.

“For three months, she’s been held prisoner by Boko Haram. She hasn’t been released as she refuses to convert in exchange for her freedom.”

He’s a Major-League Pitcher — and a Plumber — Whose Faith Helps Keep Him Focused

He’s a Major-League Pitcher — and a Plumber — Whose Faith Helps Keep Him Focused

It’s not hard to stay humble when you’re unclogging a toilet.

Or when you’re throwing gopher balls to Miracle League ballplayers swinging for the fences.

At least that’s how Detroit Tigers ace Michael Fulmer, who works part-time as a plumber in the offseason and serves as a mentor to adults with developmental disabilities, describes his approach to living out his Christian faith.

“It’s a way for me to stay levelheaded,” said the 25-year-old right-hander of his part-time gig with Cyrus Wright Plumbing in his home state of Oklahoma.

Fulmer has emerged as one of baseball’s top young pitchers, winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2016 and earning a spot on the AL All-Star team in 2017. He has a 3.46 ERA in 58 career starts, and his fastball regularly touches 97 mph.

If you’re not a baseball aficionado, simply consider this: Now in his third season, Fuller will earn $575,000 this year.

In a Religion News Service interview during the Tigers’ three-game series with the Texas Rangers earlier this week, Fulmer said his goal — win or lose — is “to preach the Lord’s name.”

As Fulmer stepped to the mound at Globe Life Park for his start Monday (May 7), he couldn’t help but notice a special group of fans in the right-field corner.

Birmingham Pastor Slams Local Megachurch as Racist, Tells Blacks to Get Out of White Churches

(Screenshot: WVTM13)Pastor Michael Jordan of New Era Baptist Church in Birmingham

A controversial longtime Alabama pastor, the Rev. Michael R. Jordan, of New Era Baptist Church in Birmingham, slammed the Church of the Highlands, the state’s largest church, on Thursday as racist and “hypocritical” while alleging that their motives behind a planned church plant in the city to help fight crime are not “pure.”

“Whites left the inner city. Whites carried their churches with them, they moved to the suburbs. White folk have proved they don’t want to live next door to us, or be our neighbors, or worship with us,” Jordan told WVTM 13. “Now they want to plant a white church in a black neighborhood under the umbrella of supposedly to fight crime? The real reason Church of the Highlands wants to put a white church in a black neighborhood is they have too many black folks at their main campus and they want them to leave and come to a church in their inner city.”

On April 29, Chris Hodges, founder and leader of Church of the Highlands, which is one of the largest churches in America, announced a new innovative church plant to be launched this fall in one of Birmingham’s most violent neighborhoods.

Hodges, who explained that he had consulted with city officials about the church’s…

Christian Groups Speak out against Supreme Court Gambling Decision

Christian Groups Speak out against Supreme Court Gambling Decision

Some Christian conservative groups say they are planning to challenge a Supreme Court ruling that ended a federal ban on sports gambling outside of Nevada.

The Supreme Court’s ruling came this week, reversing a 1992 law that banned sports betting in every state except Nevada.

Jake Grassel, the executive director of Citizens Against Gambling Expansion, said the group is planning a “vigorous challenge” to the bill.

Just a few weeks ago, Grassel’s organization joined with the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition and the Catholic Conference and Minnesota Family Council to help defeat a fantasy sports bill on the House floor.

Grassel says expanding sports gambling could lead to more gambling addictions and a negative influence on youth.

“You’re going to normalize gambling for kids because they’ll be inundated with advertising during sports games,” he said.

Many states have already been pushing for legalized sports gambling. Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington, had been working to bring legislation to legalize sports gambling in Minnesota. With the ruling, he says it’s a chance for the state to provide a “safe, fair and regulated sports gambling experience.”

“This is like Sunday liquor sales on cocaine,” he said. “That’s how excited people are going to be.

“It’s highly unlikely we’ll be able to pass legislation in five days, but what we can do is…

United Methodist Church Corrects ‘God Isn’t Male or Female’ Amendment Mistake

(Photo: Facebook/United Methodist General Conference)Delegates meet at the United Methodist Church’s 2016 General Conference in Portland, Oregon.

Days after the United Methodist Church voted down an amendment to its Book of Discipline that would have said God is not “male or female,” the denomination says there will be a revote as the text had an error.

The amendment that failed to pass on Monday was centered on gender equality, but a sentence “that should not have been included in the amendment was removed by a vote of 746–56” was “inadvertently included in the version that was distributed,” the denomination said in a statement.

That sentence reads as follows: “The United Methodist Church recognizes it is contrary to Scripture and to logic to say that God is male or female, as maleness and femaleness are characteristics of human bodies and cultures, not characteristics of the divine.”

The text, as approved by the General…

Christians encouraged to be more generous in local communities

Organised by charity Share Jesus International – the free campaign called Prompt instructs participants to prayerfully ask God a weekly question and then look out for opportunities and situations that arise where they can follow through with the challenge.

Andy Frost, Director of Share Jesus International and project lead on Prompt told Premier there are simple things we can do to be more generous.

Speaking during Premier’s News Hour, he said there are questions Christians should ask themselves: “What God-given characteristics can I affirm in a stranger this week? Who needs to hear what I read in the Bible this week? Or who needs my help this week?

“The idea is that we ask God the question and look for God’s prompting during the everyday of life.”

Each Monday the campaign team will send out an email and text including a question to those who are taking part to encourage them to act on how they feel God is leading them.

Frost told Premier an example of how he has been prompted to speak to someone he usually wouldn’t.

“Every week there are things we can do to share our faith. Recently, I became aware there’s a lady I walk past each day that’s homeless.

“Often I walk past her but I’m prompted and challenged by God [to think] ‘how can I speak about God’s hope in her difficult situation?'”

Both individuals and churches are being urged to sign up to this year’s Prompt…

Security Camera Appears to Have Captured a Guardian Angel

Security Camera Appears to Have Captured a Guardian Angel

A pastor in East Jordan, Michigan has posted photos that appear to show a guardian angel above a vehicle. The pastor says the wispy outline in the photo is evidence of God’s protection.

The pastor’s church, Jordan Rivers, posted the photos to Facebook with the caption:

“Last night at the Thorman’s house, the security camera recorded this snapshot. Glen Thorman is the fire chief for East Jordan …( they attend Jordan Rivers) Yep folks… It’s an angel. I guess there is no question who is watching over their residence while they sleep, and yes, they pray that The Angels of the Lord will surround them and their property….These photo’s [sic] have not been altered in anyway. The second photo, the security camera also shot because the angel was moving away. The camera is designed to photograph anything in motion or unusual…. lots of tears today when they opened the security on their camera …WOW!”

Some believe the object captured by the security camera was only a moth, but the pastor and his church are convinced it is a sign from God, and that the temperature at the time the photo was taken was too cold for a moth to be out.

“We have studied the photo from all possibilities. This ‘Being’ is behind the truck with translucent wings. We checked the temp at 12:49 am for this location. 46* was predicted in town, 39* degrees at the Thorman’s perhaps lower, but the average…
