Church of Ireland to launch new devotional app

Users of the Daily Worship app will have access to Bible readings, prayers, canticles and services from The Book of Common Prayer. These will be available for each day of the year, covering five services: Morning and Evening Daily Prayer, A Late Evening Office, Compline, and Holy Communion.

The Most Rev Pat Storey, chair of the central communications board in the Church, said: “I am delighted to launch this new aid to our devotional life. It is a powerful thing for a community such as the Church of Ireland to be praying together, and using the same daily readings, through the vehicle of a smartphone application.

“This app aims to help us in our personal and communal prayer lives, and to bring us closer together as a church family, and to the God whom we worship.”

Daily Worship can be purchased for €1.09/99p on Apple and Android devices from 10th May.

What Does the Bible Say About Video Games?

Is there anything in the Bible about video games? The holy book has plenty to say about human pursuits, and its words remain as relevant as ever even when gaming technology seems headed to a level approaching that of “Ready Player One.”

People play games for many reasons. Some pick up the controller out of boredom, while others see it as a way to pick up some skills or even as a way to socialize. A select few even make a living out of it, with some of the top video game streamers earning half a million per month playing games before an audience.

Pixabay/congerdesignPeople are now comfortable with using gadgets and the Internet to look up their favorite verse from the Bible, even about modern trends like video games and social media.

However a person may approach video games, the Bible has a few guiding words to advise and inspire. The holy book has always taught people that their days on earth are precious, and given to them for a purpose, as Psalm 90:12 would remind the faithful.

12 So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Video games are a form of expression and an outlet, but like most forms of modern entertainment, they are also mostly a distraction in the daily lives of people. There’s so much news about the latest consoles and upcoming…

North Korea Releases 3 American Hostages Ahead of Highly Anticipated Trump-Kim Summit

It looks like North Korea was serious about changing its tune over relations with the rest of the world.

In a dramatic turnabout on Tuesday, the isolated regime agreed to release three American hostages — Tony Kim, Kim Hak-song, and Kim Dong-chul — ahead of the highly-anticipated summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. This is a huge win for the president, and, of course, a great outcome for the families of those held captive.

North Korea transferred the prisoners from labor camps to a hotel near the capital Pyongyang.

Early Tuesday morning, President Trump tweeted, “I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health. Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un. Date & Place set.”

Trump later said Pompeo would be back in the U.S. by 2 A.M. on Thursday.

Who are the three hostages?

Tony Kim, 59, taught for a month at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology in 2017. As he attempted to leave the country, he was arrested by that authorities on unknown charges.

Kim Hak-song also worked at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. He was arrested in May 2017, just weeks after Tony Kim, for allegedly committing “hostile acts.”

Kim Dong-chul has been imprisoned in North Korea since October 2015. The government there convicted him of spying and subversion and sentenced him to ten years of hard labor.

New Zealand Anglican Church backs blessing same-sex couples

It means priests will now be able to bless same-sex civil marriages or civil unions.

Same-sex marriages, however, are still not permitted to be conducted in churches.

The decision is likely to spark tension among Anglicans.

During a speech made at General Synod, Jay Behan, who is the Vicar of St Stephen’s Shirley, Christchurch, spoke against the motion, and said he couldn’t “live with it”.

“This issue has never been for conservatives, about bigotry, or about exclusion, or about hatred. It’s a difference of opinion over how you love,” he explained.

Anglican Taonga reported a speech from the other side of the debate, and said member Cruz Karauti-Fox, Manawa o te Wheke said: “I have many friends in the LGBT community. I myself am a part of the LGBT community.

“So for me, I am in fear. I am in fear that this Church will not push (this motion) through. I am in fear that I will go home and I will not be able to tell my friends, that I will not be able to tell my family, that my Church will accept civil unions.”

The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia’s governing body passed the motion in New Plymouth on Wednesday.

The Synod’s vote accepts the report and recommendations of the Church’s Motion 29 small working group.

Detrimental Defensiveness, Church Sickness #7

Church Sickness #7: Detrimental Defensiveness

Detrimental Defensiveness happens where the leaders are fearful to move forward because of memories of past conflicts and the presence of troublemakers and bullies.

Some highlights from today’s Rainer Report:

  • Church leaders are often hesitant to lead because they don’t want to deal with criticism.
  • “Peace at all costs” in the church often means the church won’t fulfill its mission.
  • Church members should be able to call out ungodly behavior and attacks on fellow members
  • We are involved in spiritual warfare. We cannot retreat.

Prayer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marriage

It calls for the couple to be blessed by God, and asks that “they may both live and grow in your love all their days”.

Harry and the American former actress will be married by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby in a religious service in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on May 19.

Ms Markle has only recently been welcomed into the Anglican faith.

She was both baptised and confirmed in a secret ceremony conducted in March by the Archbishop, who described the proceedings as “beautiful” and “very special”.

The prayer reads:

God of love,

send your blessing upon Harry and Meghan,

and all who are joined in marriage,

that, rejoicing in your will

and continuing under your protection,

they may both live and grow in your love

all their days,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Newlywed becomes 8th Egyptian Christian woman to be kidnapped since April

Vivian Adel Youssef, 18, from the village of Dafsh in Minya Governorate, married Hanna Emad on 19th April and moved to his village in Minya but has not been seen since she went to school.

Emad told the World Watch Monitor: “When I reached the school, I didn’t find her there. Her mobile phone was switched off.

“I searched for her everywhere – in her school, in the nearby streets, in the hospitals of Samalut – but I didn’t find her. I checked with her relatives and friends but none of them saw her that day.”

While he has reported his wife missing to the police, Emad has not received any information about her so far.

Youssef’s disappearance follows similar incidents that have left some family members fearing Christian women and girls are being abducted by Muslims with the aim of converting them to Islam to marry them.

Emad said that he did not believe his wife would run away from him.

He explained: “‘There wasn’t any dispute between us. I’m sure that Vivian was kidnapped.

“She is very religious and has a very strong relationship with God, and she loves me very much.”

Syrian State Media Says Israel Attacked Just After US Quit Iran Deal

Syrian state media accused Israel of launching missiles at a target near Damascus on Tuesday, shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he was quitting the Iranian nuclear deal, a move that had prompted Israel to go on high alert.

The Israeli military said that, upon identifying “irregular activity” by Iranian forces in Syria, it instructed civic authorities on the Golan Heights to ready bomb shelters, deployed new defenses and mobilized some reservist forces.

Israel’s top general, Gadi Eizenkott, canceled a scheduled appearance at an annual security conference and was conferring with Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman and other national security chiefs, officials said.

Trump’s hard tack against the nuclear deal, while welcomed by Israel, has stirred fears of a possible regional flare-up.

Within two hours of the White House announcement, Syrian state news agency SANA reported explosions in Kisweh, south of Damascus. Syrian air defenses fired at two Israeli missiles, destroying both, SANA said.

A commander in the regional alliance supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Reuters that Israel’s air force had struck an army base at Kisweh without causing casualties.

Asked about those statements, an Israeli military spokeswoman said: “We do not respond to such foreign reports.”

Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have been helping Assad beat back a seven-year-old rebellion. Israel has…

Advice from a man without arms

This headline caught my eye: “I was born with no arms and thought I was a hopeless mistake–and then this happened . . .”

Daniel Ritchie is a husband, a father of two, and a Christian speaker and writer. He is also a bit unusual in that he eats with his feet, drives with his feet, and brushes his teeth with his feet. As he explains, “I do everything with my feet because I was born without arms.”

People have not always been sympathetic. He has been called names. He remembers a rude kid at Disney World. And the time he and his parents were asked to leave a restaurant because of the way he has to eat.

Daniel writes that, as a teenager, “The words of others began to warp my perception of the value of my life. I felt like damaged goods, broken and unlovable. Isolation and darkness were beginning to sweep over me. I started to hate myself and other people.”

A shift in perspective changed everything

Then he found a verse in Scripture where David prayed to God, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well” (Psalm 139:14).

Here’s how God used that verse in Daniel’s soul: “I sat in my room and let that verse wash over me. Wonderful are your works God. You have taken your time to make me just like I am. I am not an accident or a genetic mutation. I am, by all accounts, different by design” (his emphasis).

AT that moment, Daniel Ritchie made this transformative discovery: “I was no longer who people said I was. I was who God said I was.”

When he learned to love himself as God loves him, he learned to love other people the same way. Now he invites us to join him:

“That change in my perspective, the realization of that truth, has altered the scope of my entire life. And I believe it’s only that perspective that can change how we relate to one another in our increasingly vitriolic and divided culture–a culture where many demand that their differences are celebrated,…
