Billy Graham Devotional 27 April 2018 – God, Our Helper

Topic: God, Our Helper [Billy Graham’s Devotional Friday April 27, 2018]

I am like a sheltered olive tree protected by the Lord himself. I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever. — Psalm 52:8 (TLB)

Turn to your Bible and read the wonderful stories of men who were alone in godless surroundings but who, by the help and presence of the living God, made a marvelous contribution to their own times. Joseph was surrounded by sin and intrigue in Egypt. His master’s wife tried to seduce him. He was tested by imprisonment, but through it all he trusted in God and sought to know and do His will; and he stands today as a wonderful example of the keeping and strengthening power of God in the heart of a man who believed in Him.

Prayer for the day: In the dark days, I will put out my hand and You, loving Lord, will be there.

Russia Brings Forth Group Syrian ‘Witnesses’ in Attempt Disprove Gas Attack

Russia ratcheted up its efforts Thursday to try to disprove that a Syrian town was hit by a poison gas attack, bringing a group of Syrians, including an 11-year-old boy, to the global chemical weapons watchdog’s headquarters to denounce the reports as fake.

The U.S., Britain, France and their allies boycotted the event at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, branding it as “nothing more than a crude propaganda exercise” and an “obscene masquerade.”

The Syrians were flown to Europe to tell their stories at the OPCW and then ushered into a roomful of reporters at a nearby hotel where they all repeated nearly identical accounts: There was no chemical attack in Douma, near Damascus, on April 7. Patients who visited the hospital suffering from asphyxiation had inhaled only smoke and dust. There were no chemical traces or smells. Panic was sparked when first responders entered the hospital and began yelling that chemical weapons had been used.

One of them told reporters that the Syrians were in The Hague of their own free will and had not been put under any pressure.

The insistence by Russia and Syria that the chemical weapons attack was staged runs counter to witnesses and survivors interviewed by The Associated Press, some of them in Douma, who described being overwhelmed by a strong smell of chlorine.

The survivors interviewed by the AP in Douma after government forces took control of the town blamed rebels from the Army of Islam group of being behind the attack.

Other survivors who left Douma said the chlorine attack occurred amid government airstrikes…

Billy Graham’s Grandson Says He Will Continue His Grandfather’s Ministry

Billy Graham’s Grandson Says He Will Continue His Grandfather’s Ministry

William Graham, grandson of the late Billy Graham, says he will continue his grandfather’s ministry and preach “as if Christ is coming back in our lifetime.”

According to The Christian Post, Graham said his grandfather’s message is still needed.

Wiliam Graham is the oldest son of Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son. He also serves as vice president of the Billy Graham Evangelical Association.

“When you get up there and preach God’s Word, God’s Word does the rest,” he said, adding that people are “still looking for the same things in life.”

“The Gospel transcends culture, transcends language, transcends politics,” he said.

Graham said he’s not trying to be “the next Billy Graham,” but he wants to have the same “boldness” of his grandfather.

“He didn’t hold anything back,” Will Graham said. “I’ve always been bold, I think, but when you study my granddaddy, he took it to a whole new level.”

“We need to preach as if Christ is coming back in our lifetime,” he said. “It could be any minute. Are you ready?”

Billy Graham died on Feb. 21. William Graham says his grandfather’s ministry will continue to “be on the forefront of leading people to Christ.”

“We’re just now on the tip of the iceberg of some great things taking place,” William Graham said. “I don’t know what the future holds, but we want to be right in the middle of it, telling people about Jesus Christ.”

William took on the role of his…

Pakistan: Christian Mother Asia Bibi’s Appeal Case Will Finally Be Heard

Pakistan: Christian Mother Asia Bibi’s Appeal Case Will Finally Be Heard

Pakistan’s chief justice says he will decide, “soon,” the fate of Aasiya Noreen, a Christian woman whose 2009 conviction on blasphemy charges has fixated world attention on the country’s treatment of religious minorities.

Chief Justice Saqib Nisar told Noreen’s lawyer, Saif ul Malook, on 21 April that he would hear the woman’s appeal. Noreen, popularly known as Asia Bibi, has been imprisoned since 2009.

“Be ready, Saif ul Malook. I am going to fix your case soon and I myself will preside over the bench,” the Catholic news service UCAN reported Nisar as saying.

“Bibi’s family and everyone else who understands her ordeal, are ecstatic at the news that her appeal will be heard soon,” Malook told UCAN. According to Pakistan Today, the Chief Justice also said that all criminal appeals before the Supreme Court will be decided by July. The report did not explicitly mention Noreen’s case, but it is a criminal matter.

Noreen, a Catholic mother of five children, was arrested for allegedly making derogatory comments about Islam’s prophet, Muhammad, during an argument with a Muslim woman. She has been in prison ever since and was sentenced to death for blasphemy a year later.

During an appeal the Lahore High Court upheld her death sentence. She filed an appeal with Pakistan’s Supreme Court but her last appearance, 20 months ago, was adjourned…

Muslim Extremists Murder 39 Christians in Benue State, Nigeria

Muslim Extremists Murder 39 Christians in Benue State, Nigeria

Still shocked over a deadly attack on a Catholic congregation on Tuesday (April 24), Christians in Nigeria’s Benue state yesterday suffered another onslaught by Muslim Fulani herdsmen that reportedly left at least 39 people dead.

More than 160 houses also were reported to have been set ablaze in heavily armed attacks that began late Tuesday night in the Guma area on predominantly Christian Tse-Umenge, Mbakpase and Tse-Ali villages. Dozens of Christians were wounded, and at this writing the total number of those killed was not confirmed.

The area is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) from the Gwer East area attacks that took place the day before.

A resident of Mbakpase, Alice Terwase, told Morning Star News that the herdsmen who invaded her community were dressed in military camouflage and armed with AK-47 weapons.

“The herdsmen destroyed more than 60 houses in our village, and three members of my community were also killed during the attack,” Terwase said by phone. “At Tse-Ali village, more than 70 houses were set ablaze and 21 Christians killed. All affected victims are members of NKST [Universal Reformed Christian Church, or Nongu u Kristu u i Ser u sha Tar] church, and the Roman Catholic Church in the affected communities.”

John Umenge, of Tse-Umenge village, told Morning Star News that more than 50 houses were burned down by the…

Lucozade retells story of David and Goliath in new adverts

The drink company has revamped the popular Old Testament Bible story of David and Goliath for its new ‘Energy Beats Everything’ campaign.

The TV advert shows David waking up from a hangover and his friend, Josiah, informing him that he insulted a neighbour by the name of Goliath the night before.

“You can’t call people giants,” David’s friend warned.

“It’s what got you into trouble in the first place.”

After Goliath turns up to David’s home ready to get revenge, David takes a few gulps of Lucozade Energy. The advert depicts David gaining the confidence and stamina he needs to venture out with a sling to defeat Goliath.

In addition to the one minute TV ad, a campaign poster shows David standing triumphant on top Goliath, with slingshot in one hand and a bottle of Lucozade Energy in the other.

Senate Confirms Christian Mike Pompeo as New Secretary of State

Senate Confirms Christian Mike Pompeo as New Secretary of State

The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm former CIA Director Mike Pompeo as the nation’s new Secretary of State.

CBN News reports that the Senate voted to confirm Pompeo 57 to 42. Pompeo will take over for Rex Tillerson who previously held the post of Secretary of State in the Trump administration.

As ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported, Pompeo is a Christian whose faith is central to his life.

“He said he was ‘brought to Jesus Christ’ during his early years as a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point by two of his classmates. He later became a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Wichita, Kan., where he served as a deacon from 2007-2009 and once taught Sunday school.”

Throughout the confirmation process, Pompeo’s home church prayed for and supported him.

“This morning, we want to pray for our dear brother Mike Pompeo as he goes through the confirmation process,” the Rev. Warren Snyder, Eastminster Presbyterian’s assistant pastor, prayed several Sundays ago.

“We ask that you would be glorified in his life, that you would be lifted up, that you would strengthen him and his wife (Susan) and his son (Nick) as he goes through this process. Give him strength. Help him to stand.”

It certainly seems that God has answered that prayer!

K-12 Students to Participate in ‘Day of Silence’ in Support of LGBT Rights

K-12 Students to Participate in ‘Day of Silence’ in Support of LGBT Rights

Friday, April 27th has been designated as a Day of Silence (DOS). On this day, students who are gay, trans, and bisexual and their supporters will go through the entire school day without speaking in order to draw attention to the LGBT cause.

The Day of Silence website describes the event this way:

“GLSEN’s Day of Silence, this year on Friday, April 27, is a student-led national event where folks take a vow of silence to highlight the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ people at school.

To start, K-12 students and educators should register their participation.”

Some students will even go so far as to put tape over their mouths to prove their point.

. writer Janet Boynes, who used to be a lesbian herself before coming to the Lord, questions the wisdom of exposing children as young as kindergarten and preschool ages to the LGBT agenda.

“Our society has made a dangerous move in going from tolerance to celebration of LGBT—especially when kids are celebrating harmful sexual behaviors that can have life-threatening consequences,” writes Boynes.

Some Christian families are choosing to keep their children home from school on the Day of Silence, while others are using this as an occasion to talk to their children about this issue.

“Whether you keep your children home or allow them to go to school on the Day of Silence, be sure to let your…

Megachurch Pastor Les Hughey Resigns After 7 Women Accuse Him of Sexual Abuse

(Screencap: YouTube/Highlands Church)Les Hughey of Highlands Church in Arizona in a sermon published online on February 18, 2016.

Arizona megachurch pastor Les Hughey has officially resigned as senior pastor at Highlands Church in Scottsdale, Arizona, after several women accused the church founder of taking sexual advantage of them decades ago as teenagers and young women.

In a statement released Wednesday, the church announced that Highlands elders accepted Hughey’s resignation effective immediately.

“Pastor Hughey’s resignation does not end the responsibility of Highlands Church,” Bob Wade, the church’s interim senior pastor, said in the statement. “We are committed to providing counseling and spiritual care. Further, we recognize the critical importance of treating any allegation of abuse or misconduct seriously and its victims with compassion.”

The resignation comes after three more women stepped forward this week to claim that Hughey treated them in sexually inappropriate ways over 40 years ago when he served as youth group leader at Scottsdale Bible Church.

The newest accusations followed The Modesto Bee’s reporting last week of four other women who accused Hughey of engaging in sexual abuse at Modesto’s First Baptist Church.

According to The Modesto Bee, a total…
