How Martin Luther King Jr.’s courage challenges us today

Fifty years ago today, at 6:01 p.m. EST, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m.

Redemption: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Last 31 Hours is a riveting narrative of the events that led to Dr. King’s tragic death. Written by veteran journalist Joseph Rosenbloom, the book chronicles the last thirty-one hours and twenty-eight minutes of Dr. King’s life.

Rosenbloom explains why the great civil rights leader was in Memphis and paints an extraordinary picture of his commitment and courage.

Why he came to Memphis

In 1968, Dr. King was working to mobilize what he called the “Poor People’s Campaign” in Washington, DC. His goal was to gather thousands of impoverished people of all races from all across the country. They would stage protests at our nation’s capital until lawmakers enacted reforms to eradicate poverty in this country.

In the midst of this massive effort, he was asked to divert his attention to Memphis to support a garbage collectors’ strike that had been ongoing in that city for weeks. Dr. King felt he owed these men and their families his support, so he and his leadership team made their way to join them.

Of course, he could not have known that an escaped felon named James Earl Ray was seeking to murder him. Ray had been discharged from the Army, but not before he acquired basic proficiency with a rifle. After escaping from prison, he followed a circuitous route that brought him to Memphis.

There he learned through television and newspaper reports that Dr. King was staying at the Lorraine Motel in room 306, his usual lodging when in the city. Ray rented a room in a run-down building across the street.

Dr. King and his group were planning a dinner that night at a supporter’s home. He walked from his room onto the hotel balcony and was talking with his friends in the parking lot below when Ray fired the bullet that killed him.

Often in history, the “White American Bible Belt” paid homage to racism while calling it “Jesus Christ,” according to prominent evangelical Russell Moore.

Delivering a speech at the MLK 50 Conference in Memphis, Tennessee, on Tuesday, Moore drew a parallel between America’s struggle for racial equality and the ancient Israelites being told to choose between serving God or serving Baal.

“Time and time again, when told they could not serve both, the people of God tragically often chose to worship Baal but to rename him God,” said Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.

“And time and time again, in the white American Bible Belt, the people of God had to choose between Jesus Christ and Jim Crow, because you cannot serve both, and tragically, many often chose to serve Jim Crow and to rename him Jesus Christ.”

Moore read Matthew 23:29-39 where Jesus denounced the teachers of the law for decorating the tombs of prophets and claiming that they would not have supported murdering the Old Testament prophets if they lived back then.

TOPIC: Check With The Word (Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries Wednesday, 4 April 2018)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 1 John 4:1-3

MEMORY VERSE:
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1

The MESSAGE:

The only sure way to know if visions, dreams or prophesies are from God is to check their consistency with the word of God. This is so because God does not contradict Himself. Consider someone who dreamt about getting married to an unbeliever. There’s no need to muse about such a dream because it definitely contradicts the word. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”

1 Thessalonians 5:21 says, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” In other words, subject all things to the light of God’s word. Don’t accept a prophecy, dream, vision or counsel that doesn’t measure up with the word. Just because you felt good about it doesn’t mean it came from God.

God’s word is the supreme authority –the sole standard –by which we examine whether the manifestation we see or experience, are from Him. Any vision, dream or prophesy that is not consistent with God’s word is not from God; such should be discarded.

A woman went to a false prophet because she was barren and her husband was about to throw her out. She narrated her plight to the false prophet who used diabolical means to diagnose that she needed deliverance and that the deliverance would be done by him alone in the night in His church. The woman agreed to all the dictates of the false prophet. On the day of the deliverance, the woman was alone with the false prophet in the church in the night. At exactly 3:00 am as she recounted, the false prophet undressed and said that his god instructed him to sleep with her; until this is done, there would be no solution. The woman obliged and her problem started. She suddenly noticed her tummy started bloating until she came to our service. What went wrong with this woman? First, she was overwhelmed with her problem and forgot to align the counsel of the false prophet with that of God. Second, she did not check the spirit resident in the false prophet. You will never fall to false prophets, in Jesus’ name.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
God’s word is the supreme mirror with which we examine all things.

PROPHETIC WORD:
The story of your life shall be that of God’s grace, favour and love, as you live by the word.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING
1. Dear Father, I thank You for giving me Your word, which is the supreme authority by which I live, in the name of Jesus.
2. I overcome the pressure to lower God’s standard for my life, in the name of Jesus.
3. I receive strength to operate according to God’s word, irrespective of challenging circumstances, in the name of Jesus.

EVENING
4. Any evil prophecy given concerning my life, I annul you, in the name of Jesus.
5. Every satanically inspired dream, I cancel you, in the name of Jesus.
6. Any evil prophet anywhere, giving evil prophecies concerning my life and family, be disgraced, in the name of Jesus.
7. My God-given dreams, visions and prophecies shall come to manifestation, in the name of Jesus.

‘Anti-apartheid’ church to hold memorial service for Winnie Mandela

Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Johannesburg’s Soweto area will host a service for Ms Madikizela-Mandela on 11th April.

The plans for the service come as South Africa declared ten days of national mourning for the anti-apartheid activist and ex-wife of Nelson Mandela who died after a long illness.

 

The office of President Cyril Ramaphosa also announced a “special official” funeral with military honours will take place at Orlando Stadium in Soweto three days later.

Ms Madikizela-Mandela’s house in Soweto has been visited by mourners since she died on Monday aged 81.

Women’s league members from South Africa’s ruling party sang outside the home on Tuesday and Julius Malema, an opposition leader, spoke to a crowd of supporters, saying South Africans must “bid farewell to a giant”.

The South African flag will fly at half-mast at official locations and at South African diplomatic missions abroad during the mourning period, which will end on April 14, according to Mr Ramaphosa’s office.

A £20,000 reward offered over fatal shooting of ‘avid church-goer’ in Hackney

Abraham Badru, 26, was gunned down in Hackney, east London, on 25th March after opening the boot of his car to look for a drink, police said.

Paramedics and police were called to the scene in Ferncliff Road, but Mr Badru was pronounced dead.

Churchgoer Mr Badru had previously received a bravery award for intervening in a sex attack on a teenage girl and his family said the pain of losing him is “unbearable”.

 

They added: “Abraham hates confrontation, he has never been involved in any fight be it physical or verbal, not to talk of being involved in a gang or condoning gang violence.

“An avid church-goer, a God fearing young man, this is why it’s hard to comprehend why anyone would want to hurt him and cause a void that could never be replaced or recreated, why would anyone lurk and wait to carry out such a brutal attack?

“He steered clear from trouble, loved life too much to risk it in any way. He just wanted to be happy and continue to make his parents happy and his loved ones.

“Abraham has been snatched from us; he didn’t die of an illness, a freak accident, or of natural causes, no death is ever easy but he died because he was shot.

Be not afraid or dismayed…for the battle is not yours, but God’s. — 2 Chronicles 20:15

Not everyone is willing to pay the price required to be close to God. Not everyone is willing to simply take the time required or make the investments needed for spiritual growth. God doesn’t ask for all of our time. He certainly wants us to do things we don’t consider “spiritual.” He designed us with bodies, souls (minds, wills, and emotions), and spirits, and He expects us to take care of all these areas.

Exercising our bodies and caring for our souls takes time and effort. Our emotions need to be ministered to; we need to have fun and be entertained, and we need to enjoy being with other people. Our minds need to grow and be renewed daily. In addition, we have a spiritual nature that needs attention. To stay balanced and healthy, we must take time to take care of our entire being.

I believe the whole issue of intimacy with God is a matter of time. We say we don’t have time to seek God, but the truth is that we take time to do the things that are most important to us. Even though we all have to fight distractions every day, if knowing God and hearing from Him is important to us then we will find time to do it. Don’t try to work God into your schedule, but instead work your schedule around time with Him.

Getting to know God is a long-term investment, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get instant results. Be determined to honor Him with your time and you will reap the benefits.

Prayer Starter: Father, I can’t live without You. Help me to put You first in my life and take the time to develop a deeper, more intimate relationship. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Topic: Be Loyal [Kenneth & Gloria Copeland, Wednesday April 4, 2018]

…Them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. – 1 Samuel 2:30

God honors those who honor Him. He’ll never forget the seeds of loyalty you sow. He’ll multiply them and give them back to you in a harvest of blessing. And Malachi 3:17 says when He makes up His jewels, you’ll be forever among them.

Forever. Think about that for a moment. By honoring God with your life and your lips, you’re stepping into a realm of blessing that will literally take an eternity to explore.

Once you begin to get that kind of eternal perspective on things, you’ll see that it’s grossly immature to get mad at God when temporary things don’t work out exactly how and when you want them to. You’ll see that your loyalty must be first of all to God, that you must seek first His kingdom—even when things seem to be going wrong. The Bible says that if you’ll do that, all these other things will be added unto you.

God never forgets. He’ll never forget that in the heat of the battle, when others were giving up and saying, “Hey, this faith stuff doesn’t work!” you were still honoring Him by standing firm and speaking His promises.

So determine in your heart today to be loyal toward God in every word you speak. Make up your mind once and for all that nothing in your life is as vital as honoring Him. Keep honoring Him and speaking words of faith.

It will work deliverance for you in this life, and in eternity you’ll sure be glad you did.

In God’s economy, you must go down into the valley of grief before you can scale the heights of spiritual glory. You must become tired and weary of living alone before you seek and find the fellowship of Christ. You must come to the end of self before you begin to live. The mourning of inadequacy is a weeping that catches the attention of God. The Bible says, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” The happiest day of my life was when I realized that my own ability, my own goodness, and my own morality was insufficient in the sight of God; and I publicly and openly acknowledged my need of Christ. I am not exaggerating when I say that my mourning was turned to joy, and my sighing into singing.

Prayer for the day: In the valleys I have been drawn closer to You, my God and Comforter.
