Expelled Southern Baptist ‘Third Way’ Pastor Danny Cortez to Step Down From California Church

A California pastor who “changed” his mind on homosexuality has announced that he will step down from the pastoral role of the church he founded over 20 years ago, which was expelled by the Southern Baptist Convention in 2014 for blessing gay unions.

Pastor Danny Cortez announced during a church sermon on March 25 that he plans to resign from his position at New Heart Community Church in Whittier, California, later this spring. Cortez made the announcement public with a Facebook post last Wednesday.

“Last Sunday I announced to my church that I am stepping down from my pastoral role after 20 years at New Heart,” Cortez wrote.

“Abby and I have been so blessed to be part of a community that helped transform our lives in ways that are immeasurable. It’s been a beautiful, crazy, radical, mysterious, amazing, unbelievable and grace filled space. A space that has been willing to risk for the sake of love, for the sake of obedience to God. The people that make up New Heart are the most beautiful people we know.”

Organs left to collect dust as less people learn to play

Premier spoke to John Henderson, an organist in his twenties who plays at various churches across London, to see from his experience how popular it was among young people.

According to the survey, John is among the few under 30 who play in church. He said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the organ.”

Many organ teachers prefer students to have Grade 5 in piano already and it is often hard for those learning to find an organ to practice on frequently. However, John explained how it may also involve other factors: “I think it may just be to do with a decline in interest in music, not only in specifically organ music but in the choral music that the organ is normally used to support. I think a lot of churches and a lot of organists currently would have sung in church choirs as children or growing up in their teens and that really does cultivate a love for this beautiful, sacred music we all use to worship together.”

When asked what it means to the congregations he plays for he said: “I think it does mean quite a lot; to have a real instrument, to have someone leading the worship by playing the notes at the same time as congregation are singing, to have everyone united in worship together really is very special.”

There are also some signs of the instrument having a come-back: “There are new organ scholarship starting at parish churches which is very encouraging and…

Megachurch Pastor John Ortberg Calls Bill Hybels’ Misconduct Investigation ‘Poorly Designed’

(Photos: Facebook)John Ortberg (L), senior pastor of Menlo Church in Menlo Park, California, and Bill Hybels (R), founder and senior pastor of the multi-campus Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois.

Megachurch pastor John Ortberg insisted Monday that the investigation of multiple sexual misconduct allegations by several women against Bill Hybels, founder and senior pastor of the multi-campus Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois, was “poorly designed” and exposed the women to “grave risks.”

“I was approached over four years ago with disturbing information that I did not seek out. Along with others who received this information, I directed it to the elders of Willow Creek. The process that followed was, in my view, poorly designed and likely to expose any woman who came forward to grave risks,” Ortberg, senior pastor of the nearly 4,000-member Menlo Church in Menlo Park, California, wrote in a blog post Monday.

In an extensive investigation published by the Chicago Tribune last month, Hybels denied the sexual misconduct allegations against him, which include a consensual affair with a married woman, who retracted her claims. The Tribune report also alleged a pattern of behavior against Hybels that includes suggestive comments, extended hugs, an unwanted…

Christianity Would Collapse as a Joke If This One Word Is False, Says Max Lucado

(Screengrab: Gateway Church)Bestselling author and pastor Max Lucado preaches at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas.

Max Lucado, the popular best-selling author and preacher at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, has identified the one word on which all of Christianity stands upon, and said that if it turns out to be false, then the whole faith “collapses like a joke.”

“Three words in English. Just one in Greek. Egerthe. So much rests on the validity of this one word. If it is false, then the whole of Christianity collapses like a poorly told joke. Yet, if it is true, then God’s story has turned your final chapter into a preface,” Lucado wrote on Easter Sunday on Facebook.

The English translation of “Egerthe” is the phrase “He is risen.”

“If the angel was correct, then you can believe this: Jesus descended into the coldest cell of death’s prison and allowed the warden to lock the door and smelt the keys in a furnace,” the pastor said, referring to the angel who announced to Mary Magdalene and the other women who came to Jesus’ tomb following His crucifixion that He was no longer there.

“And just when the demons began to dance and prance, Jesus pressed pierced hands against the inner walls of the cavern. From deep within He shook the cemetery,” he wrote.

Pastor near London shooting calls for community to police itself – ‘It’s gone too far’

A 17-year-old girl has been shot dead in north London and a 16 year old boy shot in Walthamstow, he has life-changing but not life-threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made over the shooting, which comes amid concerns over rising violent crime in the capital.

So far this year, the Metropolitan Police has launched 47 murder investigations – eight in January, 15 in February, 22 in March and two in April.

Rev Nims Obunge from Freedom’s Ark Church in Tottenham and the Chief Executive of Peace Alliance, which tries to bring peace to marginalised communities, told Premier:  “A 17 year old girl being shot, being killed on our streets – it’s gone too far.”

He explained that this was the final straw: “We’re calling for a meeting of churches, communities, all kids who want to be part of the solution…we just want to work together, we’re desperate to get to the core of this. “

Rev Nims Obunge said in his community there was a rivalry between Wood Green and Tottenham: “In my neck of the woods there is a lot of revenge going back and forth and social media has played a significant role in the way young people carry out acts of violence – they have filmed it and put that up on social media.”

However, he highlighted how the trauma that rivalry brings was a situation Christians could help people with: “We have an opportunity to share the power of…

Bible publisher complains after Cuba returns NIV Bibles

According to Marti news, 17,000 New Independent Version (NIV) Bibles were returned by the Religious Affairs Department of the Communist Party but the King James Versions were not returned.

The NIV is a translation in more modern language, using a ‘phrase by phrase’ method, while KJV is more traditional in its vocabulary.

Esteban Fernández, executive director in Latin America of Biblica, the publishing house which promotes the NIV, told Mission Network News that Cuba returned thousands of Bibles to Miami, and that it wasn’t the first time.

He said: “We believe that we need something really strong and easy to get into the head and people’s hearts.”

Missionaries say many Cubans find it hard to understand the language of the KJV.

Fernández also said that many people in Cuba are sharing one Bible between six people.

Religious charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) explained on its website that the Cuban Office for Religious affairs “is focused almost entirely on controlling and restricting the public and private manifestation of religious faith, not on upholding and protecting the religious freedom of Cuban citizens.”

A report by the US Department of State on International Religious Freedom said the office for Religious Affairs in Cuba “continued to require a license to import religious literature and other religious materials. The government owned nearly all printing equipment and supplies and regulated printed materials, including religious literature,…

Bible Answer Man Explains Why Jesus Ignored Mother of Demon-Possessed Daughter, Called Her a ‘Dog’

(Screenshot: Facebook/Bible Answer Man)“Bible Answer Man” Hank Hanegraaff in a podcast on March 5, 2018.

Hank Hanegraaff, host of the “Bible Answer Man” podcast, has tackled a challenging Bible passage posed by a listener who questioned why Jesus initially ignored the mother of a demon-possessed daughter, and even called her a “dog” in the book of Matthew.

In Matthew 15:21–28, a Canaanite woman pleads with Jesus to show mercy on her and her daughter, but He initially does not reply. When the disciples urge Jesus to leave, the woman kneels before Him and asks for help again.

“It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs,” Jesus replies.

When the woman persists and says that “even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table,” Jesus hails her faith, and heals her daughter.

A listener to Monday’s podcast, a man named Lucas, asked Hanegraaff if he can shed light on Jesus’ attitude, and why at first He seemed to ignore the woman and even referred to her as a “dog.”

ISIS Murders 4 Members of Pakistani Christian Family on Easter Monday

The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for an attack in southwestern Pakistan on Easter Monday when four Christians from a single family were gunned down while they were traveling by rickshaw in Quetta city.

CNN reported on Tuesday that IS has hailed a “covert unit” of its militants who “managed to target a number of the combatant Christians.”

The radical group says its fighters “shot them with a pistol, which resulted in the killing of four of them, and all praise is due to Allah.”

Police officials confirmed that armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the family when they were returning home from a bazaar. A young Christian girl was also wounded in the attack, but unlike the other members of her family, namely her father and three cousins, she survived.

Provincial police official Moazzam Jah Ansari told Reuters that the incident “appears to be a targeted attack.”

Call for better protection for Christians as Egyptian president re-elected

It’s reported Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has won 92 percent of the vote in preliminary results.

But his only opponent Mousa Mostafa Mousa won’t be too unhappy – having publicly backed Sisi to win a second term.

Just 23 million of the 60 million eligible voters turned out.

Release International, which campaigns on behalf of persecuted Christians around the world, says that while life is somewhat easier for Christians in the capital Cairo – believers in other parts of the country are under increased pressure from extremists,

Calling for action, Release chief executive Paul Robinson said: “While thousands of Christians have been driven out of countries such as Iraq and Syria, Egypt remains a bastion of the Christian faith in the Middle East, but that enclave is under pressure.

“Release International is urging President al-Sisi to protect Egypt’s Christians, treat them as equal citizens and grant them full religious freedom.

“Mr President, Christians should no longer be driven from their homes, their churches must no longer be targeted for shootings, bombings and arson, and their families must be afforded the protection of the state. Please intervene to prevent this epidemic of kidnapping.”
