81 Percent of Protestant Pastors Say Their Congregation Mostly 1 Racial Group: LifeWay

About four out of five Protestant pastors have said that their congregations are primarily made up of one racial or ethnic group, according to a newly released report by LifeWay Research.

Eighty-one percent of surveyed pastors said they either “strongly agree” or “somewhat agree” with the statement “My church is predominantly one racial or ethnic group.”

Released Tuesday, the findings were drawn from a survey of 1,000 pastors from Protestant churches conducted over the phone from Aug. 30 to Sept. 18, 2017.

While still a large percentage, 81 percent is a decline from 2013, when 86 percent of surveyed pastors reported having a church that was “predominantly one racial or ethnic group.”

“Protestant churches are still mostly divided by race,” said Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research. “But they’re heading in the right direction.”

The report also found that 93 percent of…

Computer virus fall linked to people quitting porn for Lent

According to the Enigma Software Group (ESG), the number of malware infections detected by its software has fallen by 17-per-cent since 14th February when compared to weeks leading up to the Lenten season.

ESG spokesperson Ryan Gerding told ABC-affiliate WGNO: “It’s very common for people who participate in Lenten activities to curtail usage of things like social media and technology in general in the weeks leading up to Easter.

“They may also reduce the amount of time spent on adult websites, which are common sources of malware infections.

“We think the combination of those activities together help to explain why computer malware infections drop during Lent.”

The decline in the number of computer viruses being detected this Lent follows a 14-per-cent reduction seen by ESG last year.

The firm also found US cities with high Catholic populations saw greater drops than the national average, with 36-per-cent and 31-per-cent falls reported in Boston and New York respectively.

Remembering how Jesus was tempted in the desert by the devil for 40 days, many Christians fast or abstain from certain activities between Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday.

Many Christians agree God intended sexual intimacy to be expressed between a married man and women, and not through the use of pornography.

Once Typical of Rural Churches, This South Dakota Church Is the Last of Its Kind

(PHOTO COURTESY OF JOHN DAVIS/ABERDEEN NEWS)The deconsecrated Trinity Episcopal Church in Groton, South Dakota.

Rural America is full of old churches.

Many are little more than a small wooden structure erected by a long-forgotten congregation dating to when towns and villages formed around lumber camps, railroads and mining developments in the 19th century.

Sometimes the congregations stayed as the town or village incorporated and grew. The old wooden churches would often be demolished and replaced with something bigger and more permanent as the congregation prospered, either because the pews were full or there was generous support from a wealthy patron.

Elsewhere, entire towns and villages were abandoned as westward expansion continued across the continent. In other cases, rural population decline forced the merger of congregations. Sometimes a disused church was transformed into a museum, schoolhouse or a family’s dwelling.

One such example was highlighted last week by the Episcopal News Service, the official mouthpiece of the Episcopal Church.

The now-former Trinity Church — it was deconsecrated in 1975 — was built three years after railroad expansion resulted in the platting of Groton, South Dakota, in 1881.

The simple, but elegant structure is built in the Carpenter Gothic style to the designs of acclaimed church…
