Former NFL Player Launches Church in Minnesota

Former NFL Player Launches Church in Minnesota

Former NFL player, Kurt Ploeger, has launched a church in Minnesota called NorthLight Community Church.

He told The Christian Post he wanted to start a church after he met with two pastors who were also thinking of planting a church in the Rochester area.

“They had a vision for not just planting a church, but planting churches that would plant other churches, and a process of multiplication,” said Ploeger.

“Because of that shared vision, ultimately I interviewed with them, spent time with leaders from the boards of both churches, and that they called me in October of 2016 to come as a church planter.”

The pastors’ two churches were Calvary Evangelical Free Church and The Gathering, a church plant of Calvary. The two churches helped raise funds for Ploeger’s NorthLight church.

About 60 people attended the church’s inaugural service.

“A few of those were well-wishers, but most of them were people from the community. Some I know, some I didn’t know. And so we’re, we’re trying to build from there,” said Ploeger.

The new church is in the small, but growing town of Byron, where the population has jumped from 1,200 to 5,500 in about 20 years. Still, Ploeger said the city only has four churches and none are evangelical.

The church’s first service was Sunday at a primary school in Byron, Minn.

Ploeger retired from the NFL after playing for the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills,…

Focus on the Family Denounces John Oliver’s ‘Screed’ Against Mike Pence’s Daughter

(Screenshot: YouTube/LastWeekTonight)John Oliver on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” promoting his spoof book ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo’ on March 18, 2018.

Conservative group Focus on the Family has hit back against comedian and late night host John Oliver over a children’s book written by Vice President Mike Pence’s daughter, calling his mocking of the effort “vicious, vulgar, and vile.”

“Social media is abuzz today concerning HBO’s John Oliver’s Sunday night attack on Vice President Mike Pence and Focus on the Family. The ‘satirical’ late-night talk show host’s screed was not just vicious in tone, but also vulgar and vile in every sense of the word and way,” wrote Jim Daly, Focus on the Family‘s president, on Monday.

“Over the years, late-night television has devolved into a breeding ground for cynical, skeptical, bitter and so-called ‘humor’ that cuts people, attempting to both marginalize and tear down individuals and institutions with whom both hosts and often guests disagree,” he added.

The controversy stems from a book released by Pence’s daughter, Charlotte, titled Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President, with the title character being the family’s beloved pet rabbit.

The children’s book, which was…

Employers can provide paternity rights, say Christian Dads charity

The Government say they have heard evidence “that the current policies supporting fathers in the workplace do not deliver what they promise, despite good intentions”. A report from the Women and Equalities Committee is recommending higher paternity pay and 12 weeks’ leave for new fathers.

Mark Chester from Christian Dads’ charity Who Let The Dads Out told Premier he approved of the suggestions: “It’s easy to be critical and of course it’s good to review where we’re at but it’s really encouraging that we’re moving in the right direction for fathers and that fathers can balance work with being a dad.”

When asked if dads should get the same time off as mothers after the birth of their child he replied: “I don’t see why not, a child has two parents often and actually to give them both equal rights is a good thing.

“I’m sure there are challenges but I’m sure there are ways of working through it as well”.

He explained how, often, employers argue that it’s difficult to provide maternity rights but that they manage it because it’s the right thing to do: “I think the same is true for fathers, if we work through those challenges, the business will reap the benefits.”

Mark Chester said the most important thing was giving fathers flexible working, which he said is much more possible now that men are required to do gender-specific roles: “At one stage, fathers and men were needed…

Mississippi Passes 15-Week Abortion Ban, Becomes Most Pro-life State

Mississippi Passes 15-Week Abortion Ban, Becomes Most Pro-life State

Mississippi has become the state with the most restrictive ban on abortion after Gov. Phil Bryant signed a 15-week abortion ban bill into law on Monday, March 19.

As ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported, House Bill 1510 had already passed in the state Senate in the beginning of March. It then went on to the House for approval, and lastly, to Bryant’s desk.

Bryant, a Republican, was expected to sign the bill into law. “I have repeatedly said, I want Mississippi to be the safest place in America for an unborn child,” Bryant said at the time. “House Bill 1510 will help us achieve that goal, and I encourage the House to pass it and look forward to signing it.”

The National Review reports that Mississippi previously had a 20-week ban on abortion. The new law includes exceptions in cases of medical emergencies or “severe fetal abnormality,” although it does not include exceptions for rape and incest.

Mississippi has been known for being one of the most pro-life states, but this law solidifies the state’s commitment to life even further.

The state’s sole abortion clinic has already been strictly regulated. The clinic has filed a lawsuit challenging the newly-signed abortion ban in the hours since it was signed.

Catholics to Hold Conference in Rome to Address Church’s ‘Confusion’ Under Pope Francis

(Photo: Reuters/Max Rossi)Pope Francis waves at the end of the Wednesday general audience in Saint Peter’s square at the Vatican November 22, 2017.

A group of Catholics are planning to hold a conference in Rome next month in response to concerns they have about the direction of the Church under Pope Francis.

Known as the “Friends of Cardinal Carlo Caffarra,” named after a recently deceased cardinal who was opposed to the Catholic Church’s new direction under Francis, the group will hold a conference on April 7 titled “The Catholic Church: Where Are You Heading?”

“It’s subtitle, ‘Only a blind man can deny that there is great confusion in the Church,’ is taken from comments Cardinal Caffarra made in an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Foglio in January 2017,” reported the National Catholic Register on Tuesday.

“The former archbishop of Bologna, one of the signatories of the dubia — five questions sent to Pope Francis in 2016 aimed at helping to resolve the prevailing confusion, died in September.”

The conference stems from concerns mentioned by many within the Catholic Church over some of the statements within Pope Francis’ exhortation Amoris Laetitia, or “Joy of Love.”

In the exhortation, the pontiff seemed to loosen the standards for divorced and remarried couples…

Christian charities join forces to fill holiday hunger gap

Make Lunch and TLG (Transforming Lives for Good) are have come together as a new charity called TLG Make Lunch.

Its goal is to find more ways of providing for those who are eligible for free school meals but go hungry when school is not in session.

Tim Morfin, Chief Executive of TLG, told Premier the need is overwhelming.

He told Premier at the launch event of the partnership: “There are 1.7 million kids in receipt of free school meals and the question is “what happens to those kids when that food provision is taken away”?

“Research says one in three parents will skip a meal during the holiday time in order to provide food for their kids.”
TLG Make Lunch believes the key to solving problem lies within local churches. Its hosts lunch clubs in churches during the holidays.

Merle Baker has been running one in her church in Romford for five years.

“We pray, we have a series on a character in the Bible we’ll work on, there’s music, they do crafts, the make smoothies, we take them to the park, and they come home to a good hot meal,” she said.

Parents said the lunch clubs mean a lot more than just a meal. Monifa Cumberbatch, brings her children to the club and volunteers. She told Premier the loving Christian environment makes a big difference.
