Church of Scotland issues transgender support booklet

A new 30-page booklet – being sent to every single Church of Scotland congregation – is also urging churches to be sensitive to the needs of those identifying as transgender or gender non-confirming.

Rev Norman Smith, Convener of the Church’s Mission and Discipleship Council, said: “It [the booklet] is not intended to make any kind of statement regarding the Church’s wider relationship with the transgender community, nor does it provide a theological explanation or understanding of transgender issues.

 

“The Church of Scotland exists to bring the good news of the Gospel to all the people of Scotland, with whom we have stood for many generations and continue to do so today.”

The material features testimonies from eleven people – including several who identify as transgender, as well as a spouse of, a parent and a minister of a transgender person.

The booklet details accounts of transgender people describing bullying by some Christians and pressure to conceal transgenderism over fears of how other church-goers will respond.

Rev Smith went on to say: “We want to help congregations support all in their communities, in the best way we can and this resource helps those who care for others do that to the best of their ability.

Harvard Economist Claim Bitcoin Will Drop To $100 In A Decade

Bitcoin has been surging and despite a recent drop, its price remains exponentially higher compared to what it was years ago. However, it’s inherent volatility has left its future hard to predict.

One Harvard economist believes he can see the future, and it’s grim future at that. According to Kenneth Rogoff, a former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, the cryptocurrency could drop to as low as $100 in the next 10 years.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Rogoff said that the likelihood of Bitcoin dropping to $100 is much higher than it reaching $100,000 within the next decade.

“I think bitcoin will be worth a tiny fraction of what it is now if we’re headed out 10 years from now,” Rogoff told CNBC‘s “Squawk Box.” “I would see $100 as being a lot more likely than $100,000 ten years from now.”

According to Rogoff, aside from the illegal usage in money laundering and tax evasion, the cryptocurrency’s actual uses as a transaction vehicle are very small. Government regulation will be the trigger for this eventual price drop although he stressed that it will take some time before a global framework of regulation can materialize.

Clearly, Rogoff does not share the sentiment of many Bitcoin enthusiasts who believe that the cryptocurrency would head “to the moon.” However, that doesn’t mean he’s wrong and judging from the recent problems the cryptocurrency is facing, he could be right on the money.

Scientists Discover How Virus Lurks Inside Cells

Scientists say that they have discovered one of the ways the HIV virus hides inside the cells of its victims. The experts behind the discovery are now working on utilizing their findings in creating a cure that could put a stop to the deadly disease once and for all.

The medical community has long been perplexed by how some infected cells can go dormant and evade detection for years. However, new discoveries made University of California, San Francisco researchers finally provide some answers.

They discovered that cells can spontaneously become dormant by refusing to make the virus like a normally infected cell. They are now working on a drug that can identify and kill these latent cells.

Currently, there are no drugs that can kill these cells or stop them from reactivating in the future. This means that even if the virus is virtually eradicated, latent cells can restart the cycle anew.

While viruses generally infect new cells in a continuous fashion, an HIV-infected cell can stop or postpone making the virus for a long period of time. This makes them harder for current treatments to target effectively and could be dangerous once they become active.

“We can’t even separate out uninfected from infected cells, let alone latently infected cells,” said Dr. Steven Yukl, from the University of California, San Francisco. Latently-infected cells are extremely rare – one in one million CD4 T cells – and we don’t know how to identify them.”
