Facebook Flags Christian Satire Site the Babylon Bee for Putting out ‘Fake News’

The Babylon Bee is a Christian satire website. The website describes itself as “Your trusted source for Christian news satire.” Most people who read the website’s articles know they are tongue in cheek, but recently Facebook failed to understand that the site was satire.

Facebook flagged the Babylon Bee for supposedly proliferating “fake news,” due to its article “CNN Purchases Industrial-Sized Washing Machine To Spin News Before Publication.”

According to Relevant Magazine, the Babylon Bee’s site owner Adam Ford shared the notification they received from Facebook:

“A page you admin (The Babylon Bee) recently posted the link (CNN Purchases Industrial-Sized Washing Machine To Spin News Before Publication) that contains info disputed by (Snopes.com), an independent fact checker. Repeat offenders will see their distribution reduced and their ability to monetize and advertised [sic] removed. Learn more here: https://fb.me/fact-checking-help.”

Snopes.com apparently fact-checked the Babylon Bee’s CNN story, concluding that it was false, but completely mised the satire.

Facebook has since apologized for the mistake, stating, “There’s a difference between false news and satire. This was a mistake and should not have been rated false in our system. It’s since been corrected and won’t count against the domain in any way.”

Andy Savage Remains on Leave as Investigation ‘Wraps Up,’ Church Says

(Photo: Facebook)Highpoint Memphis Church Teaching Pastor, Andy Savage.

Embattled Highpoint Church Teaching Pastor Andy Savage will remain on leave as the church wraps up an investigation of his ministry sparked by his public confession that he had a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old while he was her youth pastor.

The Tennessee church had initially announced that the investigation, which is being conducted by an independent counsel, would be completed by March 1. But in an announcement Sunday, it said the investigation is now “wrapping up.”

The full statement reads: “We want to update you regarding Andy Savage. The investigation is wrapping up and the initial findings give us assurance that we can begin the long process of moving forward as a church. Just as the culture around us is waking up to the suffering expressed by the courageous voices of the #metoo movement, we are taking very seriously our commitment to fully understand how our church should minister to the needs of the people we impact. Andy Savage remains on leave. We will release further updates as the situation requires.”

Savage was forced to publicly discuss his past in early January after an online uproar over revelations by his now grown-up victim, Jules Woodson, who told The Wartburg Watch how…

Bishop gives 10 commandments for robots

The Bishop of Oxford, who sits of the House of Lords select committee on AI, urged the Government and the technology industry to take the ethical implications of AI advancements seriously.

Speaking at the event ‘Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: Innovation, Funding and Policy Priorities’, Rev Steven Croft detailed his modern commandments for robots, which focus on data protection, ethics, criminal subversion and restrictions AI’s power “to destroy.”

Rev Croft said he became concerned about the power of AI after reading an article in The Times about a robotic vacuum cleaner.

Writing in his blog he explained: “The robot will use AI to navigate the best route round your living room.

Bishop Stephen's Blog

“To do this, it will make a map of your room using its on-board cameras.

“The cameras will then transmit the data back to the company who make the robot.

“They can sell the data on to well known on line retailers who can then email you with specific suggestions of cushion covers or lamps to match your furniture.

“All of this will be done with no human input whatsoever.”

His commandments include: “The primary purpose of AI should be to enhance and augment, rather than replace, human labour and creativity.” While another states: “Governments should ensure that the best research and application of AI is directed towards the most urgent…

Who hold the title for most Oscars lost?

The Shape of Water won last night’s Academy Award for Best Picture. Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwall, and Allison Janney won the acting Oscars. Their victories were predicted by many.

But who has lost the most Oscars? The answers may surprise you.

Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Katharine Graham in The Post. This marked her twenty-first Oscar nomination. She has won three while losing eighteen.

She is nowhere near John Williams, however. The iconic composer of musical scores for E.T., Jaws, and the Indiana Jones and Star Wars series has been nominated an amazing fifty-one times, including last night for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But he holds the record for the most Oscars lost, with forty-six.

Meryl Streep and John Williams have clearly enjoyed astounding artistic success. But their perseverance has been as important to their careers as their talent.

No attribute is more essential for Christians who wish to serve Jesus in a culture like ours.

Mike Huckabee a “shameful choice” for CMA Foundation

Mike Huckabee resigned last week from the CMA Foundation, an educational arm of the Country Music Association. The former Arkansas governor has long been a champion of putting the arts in schools, which is the mission of the Foundation.

Why, then, was he forced to resign?

One gay advocate’s protest is an example of many others: “Huckabee speaks of the sort of things that would suggest my family is morally beneath his and uses language that has a profoundly negative impact upon young people all across this country. Not to mention how harmful and damaging his deep involvement with the NRA is. What a shameful choice.”

What about Mr. Huckabee’s position on homosexuality was so objectionable to so many?

He believes that marriage should be “uniquely between a man and a woman.” And he supports the Federal Marriage Amendment, which “defines marriage as between one man and one woman.”

I suspect that this…

Children need lessons for avoiding debt, Justin Welby group demands

The Just Finance Foundation wants to see financial education lessons become a compulsory part of school curriculums in the UK.

Executive director, Rowena Young told Premier: “Children are starting to develop their fundamental understanding, attitudes and behaviour towards money as young as seven.

“We’re working in some primary schools across the UK but really we’re [saying] that every child needs access to that sort of education.”

Just Finance is suggesting that money skills become incorporated into existing personal, social, health, and economic education (PSHE) classes in schools.

Leaders say the classes are particularly pertinent, given growing levels of financial insecurity and problem debt in UK.

Ian West/PA

Citing figures by the Financial Conduct Authority which show 40 per cent of UK adults have less than £100 in savings, Just Finance says problems with managing finance are becoming “a mainstream issue”.

Explaining how the lessons would work, Rowena Young said: “It’s about really understanding the dynamics of money and where it’s going, and it’s [about] thinking through the importance of putting a little bit away for things that are coming up in the future, not just living in the here and now.”

Cardinal Pell faces australian court on sex abuse charges

Wearing his clerical collar, George Pell attended a hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court to determine whether prosecutors have sufficient evidence to put him on trial.

The cardinal’s committal hearing before Magistrate Belinda Wallington is scheduled to take up to a month, with testimony of alleged victims to be suppressed from publication.

Pell arrived by car and was flanked by police and one of his lawyers, Paul Galbally, as he walked through a large group of media and into the court security screening area.

He remained silent as he entered.

He emptied his pockets before walking through a security metal detector and a security guarded frisked him in a routine procedure.

Other security guards ensured the public kept their distance from the 76-year-old cleric in the foyers of the seven-floor downtown court house in Australia’s second-largest city where he was once archbishop.

Pope Francis’ former finance minister was charged in June of last year with sexually abusing multiple people in his Australian home state of Victoria.

The details of the allegations against the cardinal have yet to be released to the public, though police have described the charges as “historical” sexual assault offences – meaning the crimes that are alleged to have occurred decades ago.

The case places both the cardinal and the Pope in potentially perilous territory.

For Pell, the charges are a…

Cheaper MacBook Air to be Released in Q2 2018

AppleCurrent line of MacBook Air from Apple

Reports say a lower-priced MacBook Air will be released later this year.

Apple has not had any substantial upgrade to the MacBook Air, with the latest model released three years back. This year, according to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is hoping to boost sales of the device by giving it a cheaper price.

“We expect Apple (US) to roll out the new MacBook Air with a lower price tag in 2Q18,” Kuo wrote in his research. “We forecast total shipments of MacBook models will grow 10-15% YoY in 2018 (vs. 0-5% YoY decline for the NB industry), up from 15.5-16mn units in 2017.”

The analyst did not mention whether there will be any hardware or design changes to the cheaper MacBook Air.

Since its last model release three years back, Apple has cut back on available models, completely discontinuing the 11-inch model. The 13-inch model got a minor upgrade in June after getting an option to add a bump to the base processor.

Back in April, it also received new 1.8 GHz Intel processors.

Critics are wondering whether Apple will finally upgrade the gadget’s current 1440 x 900 non-Retina display and the ports that are still missing a USB-C.

Currently, MacBook Air still sells at $999. If the rumors are true, this should become substantially lower between April and June this year. An announcement is expected at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in 2018. More details and rumors should be revealed before that time.

The lower price could be a bid to celebrate the MacBook Air line’s 10th anniversary this year.

Apart from the cheaper MacBook Air, Kuo also…
