Low-Fat and Low-Carb Diets Usher In Similar Results, Study Finds
A new study recently found that low-fat or low-carb diets, when followed through, come up with basically the same results. What these findings suggest is that dieters could benefit from being less distracted about fat and carb counting and from focusing more on getting a healthy and balanced diet.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and was a randomized trial involving 609 adults which were considered overweight. They were then grouped into two, with one group doing a healthy low-fat diet, and the other going with a healthy low-carbohydrate plan.
Their weight changes after 12 months were monitored, and their family history of obesity and insulin tendencies were also taken into account.
What the researchers found could be something that runs counter to popular diet plan advocates, especially those who preach severely cutting down on carbs or fat. The two groups, whether on low-fat or low-carb plans, essentially displayed no significant difference in their weight loss progress.
Also tellingly, each participant’s genome or insulin levels did not significantly affect that person’s weight loss progress at all.
“It’s because we’re all very different, and we’re just starting to understand the reasons for this diversity. Maybe we shouldn’t be asking what’s the best diet, but what’s the best diet for whom?” Christopher Gardner, lead author for the study, said in…

Benny Hinn’s Nephew on How to Reach Loved Ones Deceived by False Gospel
The nephew of Benny Hinn, who is a pastor in Southern California, has shared practical advice for how Christians should engage with loved ones who are caught up in false teaching — like his uncle’s prosperity theology.
Costi Hinn, who rejected the teaching of his “Uncle Benny” after working alongside him for years, recently told Todd White, host of the Wretched podcast, that he was able to see the hypocrisy in the prosperity gospel after witnessing the authentic faith of his Baptist friends.
“I remember watching their lives,” he said. “I had relationships, and as I observed them live out their faith, I couldn’t find a lot of holes. There was pursuit of holiness, there was love for Christ, there was a passion for the Gospel. It was so different than me that at first I thought, ‘Oh, they don’t have the Holy Spirit.’ But as I began to see the fruit in their lives, I’m going, ‘Wow, maybe I’m missing something.’ And I started to question.”
Instead of berating him with insults and “flame-throwing,” Hinn said his Baptist friends simply asked him questions.
“They didn’t say, ‘Hey, you…

Joy as South Sudanese pastors banned from the UK granted entrance
The U-turn came after the North East Fife MP Stephen Gethins urged the Home Office to reconsider its decision which stopped the men from taking part in a Church of Scotland training programme.
He said the government must take a good look at how it deals with these kinds of applications in future.
He said: “Time after time visas are being denied to people with genuine reasons for entering this country. This costs them time, money and energy and while I welcome the fact that the Home Office has now granted access, it is simply not good enough that people have to jump through so many hoops to get here.
“I wish all those involved in the peace mediation programme well. This is a great initiative by the Church of Scotland on an area that has been so badly affected by conflict. The Government should be getting behind this work rather than adding more obstacles. “
Mr Gethins had urged the Home Secretary on Wednesday to personally intervene to ensure they could attend the “vitally important” mediation and conflict resolution workshops with nine other members of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan.
The programme is aimed at empowering faith leaders to help bring peace to the war torn African country, which became the newest nation in the world in 2011.
One of the pastors, Rev Orozu Daky, said he was “deeply disappointed” because it is was the first time he had ever been…

Former President Jimmy Carter Will be Liberty University’s Commencement Speaker
Former President Jimmy Carter will be Liberty University’s commencement speaker in May.
Carter will be the first Democratic president to speak at Liberty, a Christian university.
“I look forward to reaching out to this young generation of future leaders. I hope to inspire them as so many have inspired me throughout my life,” Carter said in a statement.
In 1990, former President George H.W. Bush delivered the commencement address, and last year, President Donald Trump was the commencement speaker.
About 50,000 people attended Trump’s speech, the school said.
Carter, 93, was president from 1977 to 1981. He and his wife started the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization that champions democracy and human rights. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
“I did not meet President and Mrs. Carter until early last year. I was so impressed with the president’s warmth, kind demeanor and humility,” Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. said in a statement.
In 2005, Carter released his 20th book, Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis. In the book, Carter argues that Christian fundamentalism has endangered the separation between church and state.
He says in the book: “The most important factor is that fundamentalists have become increasingly influential in both religion and government, and have managed to change the nuances…

Day of prayer for South Sudan and DRC as violent conflict devastates citizens
They asked Christians to pray for South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as both countries face violent conflict and famine.
Archbishop Justin said: “On my visits to both countries in recent years, it’s been impossible to describe the overwhelming scale of destruction. These conflicts are causing terrible loss of life. Huge numbers of people have been forced to flee their homes, which is tearing apart families and communities.”
The latest report on human rights abuses carried out during South Sudan’s civil war contains harrowing accounts of beheadings, mutilations, gang rapes and other atrocities.
In the document, released by a United Nations commission, one South Sudanese man is said to have returned home after hiding from government soldiers to find they had blinded his mother, gouging out her eyes with spears.
The woman had tried to defend her 17-year-old daughter from being raped by more than a dozen soldiers. Seventeen soldiers then sexually assaulted the teenager, while the family’s father was beheaded.
Untold tens of thousands have been killed in South Sudan since the conflict erupted in December 2013, just two years after independence from Sudan.
More than two million people have fled the country, the largest refugee crisis since the Rwandan genocide 24 years ago. Millions who remain at home face hunger.
Former bishop of South Sudan, Anthony…
