David and Louse Turpin are scheduled to appear in a courtroom in Riverside for a conference about their case.

They have pleaded not guilty to torture and other charges and each is held on 12 million US dollars (£8.6 million) bail.

The couple were arrested in January after their 17-year-old daughter escaped from the family’s home in Perris, California, and called emergency services.

Authorities said the home reeked of human waste and evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest sibling weighing less than six stone (37kg).

The case drew international media attention and shocked neighbours who said they rarely saw the couple’s 13 children outside the home.

Those who saw the children recalled them as skinny, pale and reserved.

Authorities said the abuse had been going on for so long that the children’s growth was stunted.

They said the couple shackled the children to furniture as punishment and made them live a nocturnal lifestyle.

David’s parents, James and Betty Turpin, told ABC News they were “surprised and shocked” by the allegations and could understand “any of it”.

They said that they are considered to be a good Christian family in their community and that added that “God called on them” to have as many children as they did.

Andrew Birks, who was ordained a Church of England priest last year, was one of five officers investigated after 40-year-old Sean Rigg collapsed and died at Brixton police station in August 2008.

Mr Rigg, who had paranoid schizophrenia, was arrested in Balham and taken to the station in a police van driven by Mr Birks.

At an inquest in 2012 jurors found the primary cause of Mr Rigg’s death was cardiac arrest and were critical of the way he was restrained by police.

Mr Birks was suspended with pay during an investigation by the police watchdog and Metropolitan Police bosses refused to let him leave the force – because by doing so he could avoid any potential disciplinary proceedings.

London’s High Court heard on Thursday the IOPC, previously the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), initially concluded Mr Birks had no case to answer over Mr Rigg’s death.

Sean Rigg who died in custody in 2008, as Andrew Birks, one of five officers that have been investigated over the death of Rigg has claimed that his prolonged suspension is unlawful.

But the watchdog renewed its investigation following the inquest and his resignation, which had previously been accepted by senior officers, was blocked.

Colin Pritchard changed his name to Ifor Whittaker after he was handed a five-year sentence at Northampton Crown Court in 2008 after admitting abusing two children in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, between 1979 to 1983.

The 73-year-old was jailed for 16 years at Hove Crown Court on Thursday after being found guilty of abusing a third boy between 1987 and 1991 while he was the vicar of Sedlescombe in East Sussex, police said.

He was convicted of seven offences including inciting the child, aged between 10 and 14, to commit gross indecency and buggery.

A jury also found him guilty of conspiring with fellow vicar, close friend and convicted paedophile Roy Cotton to commit acts of indecency.

The pair had already been arrested by Sussex Police in 1997 on suspicion of sexually abusing children and were released on bail.

Cotton retired in 1999 and the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case. He died in 2006.

These details emerged in a critical independent report by Roger Meekings in 2012 which revealed how Cotton had been convicted of indecent behaviour with a child in 1954 while training for the priesthood.

He was thrown out of theological college but then readmitted and ordained in 1966 – the same year he attended with Pritchard.
