Muslim minister gives up Irn-Bru for Lent to help persecuted Christians

Humza Yousaf, Scottish Minister for Transport and the Islands, invited Twitter followers to vote for one of three food and drink ‘vices’ he should forgo during the six-week fasting period and the orange fizzy beverage was selected – ahead of chocolate and crisps.

Mr Yousaf has pledged to give the money he saves on the drink often described as ‘Scotland’s other national drink (after whisky)’, to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), a Catholic charity which supports persecuted Christians in Muslim-majority regions.

 

Nearly 2,500 people took part in the SNP member for Glasgow Pollok’s poll.

He tweeted: “Think I’ll join Christian friends doing Lent this year. Any money saved from not consuming my vice will go @ACN_Scotland who support persecuted Christians across the world.”

 

In another tweet, he said: “Should say reason I’m supporting @ACN_Scotland is because the persecution of Christians worldwide in some Muslim majority countries is something that deeply saddens me, and most Muslims.”

Petition to reinstate Brixton prison chaplain gets 20,000 signatures

The pastor says he was falsely accused of calling one inmate a “terrorist”, which he claims was part of a Muslim senior colleague’s campaign to end “Christian denomination” at the south London prison.

Mr Song, who started volunteering at the prison nearly 20 years ago after moving to the UK from South Korea, taught Christian courses such as the Alpha course in the prison, which led to many prisoners becoming Christians.

 

However, he said the prison’s senior chaplain since 2015, Imam Mohamed Yusef Ahmed, began scrutinising the material, claiming it was “too radical” and that the Christian views expressed were “extreme”.

The final decision to dismiss Mr Song was taken by the prison’s management, not Imam Mohamed.

Mr Song has made contact with the Christian Legal Centre, which is now considering legal action against Her Majesty’s Prison Service.

A spokesperson for Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service told Premier: “We do not comment on individual members of staff.

“However, we recognise the importance of faith and the positive impact that it can have on the lives of offenders, which is why there are multi-faith chaplaincy teams in every prison.”

The charity has urged people to sign the petition.

NASA to Send Million-Year-Old Rock Back To Mars

NASA will be sending a very old piece of Martian rock back home for the sole purpose of blowing it up. This is all part of a larger research mission which will pave the way for human visitation of Mars.

The ancient rock, named “Sayh al Uhaymir 008,” or “SaU008,” was once part of a larger meteorite that blew off the red planet and landed here on Earth millions of years ago. SaU008 was discovered in Oman in 1999 and one of just 200 known Martian rock samples that are deemed strong enough to survive the journey back to its origins.

“Every year, we provide hundreds of meteorite specimens to scientists all over the world to for study,” Caroline Smith, the principal curator of meteorites at London’s Natural History Museum – which provided the rock, said in the press release. “This is a first for us: sending one of our samples back home for the benefit of science.”

The rock will part of the 2020 Mars rover mission where it will be blown up to test the calibration process for the rover’s hyper-sensitive laser measurement device, dubbed “SHERLOC.”

SHERLOC was designed to examine rock and chemical features as fine as human hair and needs something to help it get its bearings on the red planet. In the past, NASA used materials such as rocks, metals and pieces of glass to help adjust similar technology.

    University in Oklahoma Reinstates Ken Ham Lecture


    Late last month, internationally renowned Christian speaker and author Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis was uninvited from speaking at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Today, UCO President Don Betz has invited the AiG president to give his talk “Genesis and the State of the Culture” on the Edmond campus.  


     


    Although campus activists put enormous pressure on the student body president to cancel the lecture at UCO’s Constitution Hall, President Betz has decided to restore Ham’s lecture for March 5. Joining Ham at the free 3 p.m. presentation will be Dr. Georgia Purdom from the AiG faculty; she holds a PhD in molecular genetics from Ohio State University. Dr. Purdom will speak on “Genetics and the Bible.” 


     


    Ham declared, “I’m thrilled my talk at UCO is back on again. UCO officials have definitely heard from many concerned state legislators, several local residents, and alumni about the denial of our right to free speech.


     


    “Furthermore, by moving my talk from the evening to the afternoon, we now have the opportunity to reach even more UCO students during the school day. UCO is a commuter campus, and many of its students might not have been able to attend in the evening.”

    Potential School Shooting is Averted after Suspect’s Grandmother Calls 911


    A potential school shooter was arrested this week after his grandmother notified police of his suspicious activity.


    TheHill.com reports that Joshua O’Connor’s grandmother notified law enforcement after she saw disturbing entries in O’Connor’s journal detailing how he planned to shoot students at ACES High School in Everett, Washington.


    O’Connor reportedly wrote that he wanted to carry out a school shooting that would be “infamous” and would cause the “biggest fatality number I possibly can.”


    The 18-year-old O’Connor had also written that he had been “reviewing many mass shootings/bombings (and attempted bombings) I’m learning from past shooters/bombers mistakes.”


    O’Connor’s situation raises the question of how much potential shooters are influenced by the actions of other shooters. His grandmother’s 911 call also came just one day before the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.


    O’Connor was also found to have an AK-47 and military-type grenades hidden at his home. He was arrested at school where police found him in possession of a knife and marijuana.


    Mukilteo School District spokesman Andy Muntz commended the grandmother for taking action and said this should encourage anyone who sees something suspicious not to hesitate to report it.
