US Figure Skating Couple Dedicates Performance to Victims of Florida High School Shooting

United States figure skating couple Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim used their Thursday skate at the Winter Olympics to honor the 17 people killed in the Valentine’s Day shooting in Parkland, Fla.

The married couple did not qualify for an Olympic medal, but they said they told reporters after the skate they were skating for those killed in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“I think I kind of put pressure on myself today, because I wanted to honor those who are lost and skate really well for them and kind of have somewhat of a happy moment for our country,” she said after their performance.

“[U]nfortunately, [there were] too many mistakes today,” she added. “It was one of our lowest scores. And I think I’m maybe just being too tough on myself, but [I] wanted to lift the spirit of those who are probably mourning right now.”

The couple heard about the shooting hours before their skate.

“We’re still privileged and lucky to be doing what we’re doing and it’s so sad that 17 people died from the United States,” Scimeca-Knierim said. “I told Chris today that the world is so much bigger than us.”

Scimeca-Knierim didn’t think she would even have the chance at the Olympics. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with a serious gastrointestinal condition. She lost 80 pounds. She told reporters her faith helped her compete…

Tim Challies Warns Christians the ‘Bible Is Very Clear’ Not to Marry Unbelievers

(Screenshot: YouTube/Tim Challies)Tim Challies of Grace Fellowship Church in Canada in a YouTube video on February 15, 2018.

Christian author and Pastor Tim Challies of Grace Fellowship Church in Toronto, Ontario, has warned that Christians should not marry unbelievers. His advice is part of a broader discussion on the topic: “What’s wrong with Christian dating?”

“The Bible makes it very, very clear that a Christian can only marry another Christian. You may not marry somebody who is an unbeliever. You should not marry somebody for whom you’re not certain whether they’re a believer or not. So absolutely, the first thing is, is this person a believer in Jesus Christ? Do we share faith?” Challies advised Thursday in part two of his message on Christian dating.

“And you know, it can sound very easy, it can sound — that person’s almost there, or that person really loves me, and he’s promised he won’t interfere, or that kind of thing. You may not do it,” he asserted.

“And there’s very good reasons for that. These things may be easy now when you’re really in love with one another and you know, you’ll do anything to marry one another. It will at some point get more difficult and there will inevitably be consequences for marrying an unbeliever.”

As for Christians who have found…

Teetotal Bishop has pint named after him

The dark, strong, porter with chocolate and caramel hints has been named ‘Bishop’s Porter’ after Bishop Tony Porter, the Right Rev Bishop of Sheffield.

The idea started when a friend of Tony’s and church warden, Ian Raynor, saw a guest ale on a chalk broad.

Raynor said in a statement: “It was described as a porter and I immediately thought of Bishop Tony who I know quite well. I rang him to check to see if he was ok with the idea and then got in touch with the brewery.”

The local Hucknall Beer Festival is held in a centre associated with the church, so it seemed a local collaboration would be a good idea.

Bishop Tony received the idea willingly and told Premier: “The real reason is I’m a real supporter of small, local business. My daughter started a cafe in Aberystwyth and employed a lot of people, my son and his wife have a business…it’s really tough to run a small business.”

“The guy that runs it, Anthony Hughes, started this 5 years ago and the bottom line is people in Hucknall have got jobs because of this man and I want to support it.”

When asked if people are excited to try it, Bishop Tony said: “I’ve been having texts from all over the place…I’ve got to buy a few bottles so I can distribute it to people who want to taste it.”

However, Tony will not be trying it himself: “No, I decided as a teenager that I wanted to be an athlete and I was brought up…

New Renders Reveal Nokia 7 Plus Design

Reuters/Lehtikuva LehtikuvaThe headquarters of Finnish telecommunications network company Nokia is pictured in Espoo, Finland

Notable mobile reporter and leaker Evan Blass revealed the possible first look into Nokia 7 Plus, the brand’s first Android One device, which is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) later this month.

Nokia 7 Plus is a fresh take on last year’s Nokia 7, but with a few notable twists that should keep consumers excited.

Based on the leaked renders, Nokia 7 Plus will come in two new color options — one in black and white with copper highlight, and another in chocolate brown, also accented by copper highlights. The upcoming model still sports relatively substantial bezels, unlike many recent releases that are going for the bezel-less look. Still, this is Nokia’s first 18:9 display combined with curved corners.

An Android One stamped is seen on the back of the device. The circular module just below the camera could possibly be a fingerprint scanner, which is also seen in the second-generation Nokia 6. The rear camera itself is rumored to be a double Zeiss lens camera.

Consumers would see a hardware upgrade with the 7 Plus as well. Last year’s Nokia 7 has midrange features with a Snapdragon 630 and 4 GB of RAM. Nokia 7 Plus, according to rumors, will run on Snapdragon 660, with other specs mostly similar with those of its predecessor, as well as 64 GB built-in storage.

As an Android One device, 7 Plus will run on an unmodified version of Google’s OS. Android One is said to be the “purest” form of Android. That means less bloatware and more software…

Open Heavens 17th February 2018: Saturday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye — Greater Works Than These

Open Heavens 17th February 2018: Saturday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye — Greater Works Than These

Topic: Greater Works Than These [Open Heavens 17 Saturday February 2018]

Memorise: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12

Read: 2 Kings 2:9-15 (KJV)

9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.

11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;

14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

Bible in One Year: Leviticus 13; 1 Corinthians 4

MESSAGE

When Elisha requested for the double portion of Elijah’s anointing, he was simply asking for the ability to do greater works than what his master had done. Here is Elijah’s response to his request:

“And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.” – 2 Kings 2:10

One lesson we should quickly learn from this response is that any child of God asking God for more of His gift or blessings is actually courting higher responsibilities. Asking for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit required great faith on the part of the upcoming prophet. In the same vein, it requires faith from us to believe that we can do greater things than Christ did. As far as Elisha was concerned, nothing could be allowed to come between him and the anointing for greater works. He therefore, keenly watched and followed the footsteps of his master. As they took a walk and talked, a chariot of fire and flaming horse parted them. Elisha beheld this, and he cried out to signify that he saw everything and had met the condition Elijah laid down for him. He tore his clothes and picked up the mantle that fell from Elijah while he was being transported to heaven, signifying that he was ready to change his old garment to a new one for a new life of greater exploit. I have good news for you: someone greater than Elijah is now present with us, and His name is Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. He came to die for our sins and to rescue us from all forms of damnation. Bible testifies that He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38). To be able to do what He did and even greater things than He did, you must decide to follow Him all the way, just as Elisha did with Elijah. In order to be intimate with Jesus Christ, doing His bidding is not optional. After Elisha got the double portion of Elijah’s spirit, other sons of the prophets had to acknowledge the beautiful thing that had taken place in his life, and they all bowed to him. A greater experienced awaits those who give their lives to Christ, because demons will begin to bow to them. This is just part of the Lord’s promise to us (Mark 16:17-18).

What is expected of us, therefore, is to abide in Him and follow His way of life and the ideas He brought from His Father, even if this requires our having to suffer for him. 1 Peter 2:21 say:

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:”

Prayer Point:  Father, please count me worthy to do greater works that my Master did while on earth, and let Your Name be glorified through me.

Hymn 2: I Need Thee, Oh, I Need Thee.

1. I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.

Chorus:
I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh, bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee.

2. I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby;
Temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh.

3. I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain.

4. I need Thee every hour; teach me Thy will;
And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.

5. I need Thee every hour, most Holy One;
Oh, make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son.

Flatimes’ Notice Board: Please do not prolong your salvation if you have not repented. Many are going home daily and tomorrow maybe too late…There is still hope, JESUS LOVES YOU!

Religious studies voted among least important subjects

It is considered the fourth least important subject in a poll, just above Drama, Classics and Latin.

Only twelve per cent polled think RE is ‘very important‘, with the majority saying either ‘not very important’ or ‘not at all important’.

Premier spoke to Professor Trevor Cooling from the National Institute for Christian Education Research at Canterbury Christ Church University.

He told Premier News Hour: “I think it reflects the current lack of understanding that there is in society in general about the place that religion and belief play in people’s lives and it seems to me we need to work hard at improving that understanding.”

Elaborating on why RE may has lot its value he said: “We live in a very secularised society and an increasingly materialistic society and one of the things that came out of the YouGov poll was the very, very high value on things like Maths and English and Science… that reflects a society where we seem to value the things that have scientific feel to them.
“We’ve lost sight of the other dimensions of human life which comes from the creative arts in subjects like History and Religious Education.”

Professor Cooling said he fundamentally disagrees with the merge of religious education into other subjects, such as citizenship or ‘world view’ classes, something which is on the table.

Premier also spoke to Alistair Lichten from the National…

Built-In Image Stabilization and Improved Video Features for the Best of X-Series Yet

Fujifilm websiteFujifilm X-H1

Fujifilm unveils X-H1, its most advanced X camera series to date.

Fujifilm X-H1 is arguably the brand’s most lauded release since X-T2 in 2016. The brand’s X-series is already known for its unique image processing, with the X-Pro 2 and X-T2 previously converting many professional Nikon and Canon users to Fujifilm’s mirrorless line.

The X-series’ ability to produce commendable images that would rival full-frame competitors is its main selling point. Now, though, Fujifilm should be able to convert more pros with X-H1’s five-axis in-body image stabilization, the first for its mirrorless cameras.

This means that it does not matter what lens is attached to the body, the camera itself would help it capture images with optical stabilization. A new flicker reduction option helps it take great images under fluorescent and mercury lighting.

To add to that, Fujifilm X-H1 is going all the way with its advanced video shooting ability, as compared to previous releases. While Fujifilm is known for its great images, the same could not be said for its videos, until now.

X-H1 features DCI 4K (4096 by 2160) as well as Rec.2020 color gamut at a bit rate of up to 200 Mbps. With the setting at 1080p, it could record slow-motion videos of up to 120 fps. A new film mode, called Eterna, increases flexibility in post-production by using muted colors.

A microphone input jack is available, although its improved built-in mic should do the trick in natural setting.

Fujifilm XH-1 is the first top-end model in the X-series that sports a touchscreen LCD, which can be tilted in three directions….
