Papal conference to work on eradicating slavery

In a speech on Thursday, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster said it will be a time to “build partnerships of trust between police forces and resources of the Catholic Church”.

The Santa Marta conference will take place in Vatican City from 8th – 9th February with police chiefs and Catholic church leaders from more than 30 different nations.

Nichols added: “In many cases the religious women in the Catholic Church, are the ones that actually know what’s going on. These are brave, courageous women who spend their time on the streets, looking people up.”

Nichols explained the importance of collaboration in eliminating modern day slavery.

“If we can get cooperation, then not only are victims rescued, but also traffickers are arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

“I met a 60-year-old Afghan woman who for the last 30 years had been in domestic slavery in a house in London and for those 30 years, she had slept only and always under the kitchen table.”

The Santa Marta Group is an alliance of international police chiefs and bishops from around the world working together with civil society in a process endorsed by Pope Francis, to eradicate human trafficking and modern day slavery.

The Pope describes trafficking as “an open wound on the body of contemporary society”.

According to Anti-slavery.org, only 1 per cent of enslaved people in the UK have the chance of seeing their exploiter brought to justice.

Open Heavens 2nd February 2018: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye — Divine Favor I

Open Heavens 2nd February 2018: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye — Divine Favor I

Topic: Divine Favor 1 [Open Heavens 2nd Friday February 2018]

Memorise: “Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment cometh from the LORD.” Proverbs 29:26

Read: Esther 5:1-3 (KJV)

1 Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

2 And it was so, when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, that she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

3 Then said the king unto her, What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.

Bible in One Year: Exodus 22-23, Romans 8:1-17

MESSAGE

Today’s Bible text tells a bit of the story of Queen Esther, who was divinely favored. From her experience, we can learn quite a few things on divine favor. For example, you will observe that she put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house before she was granted favor. Why did she put on her royal apparel? Apart from the rule that she could not come before the king uninvited, it would also have been rude, uncomplimentary and indecent for the queen to have attempted to approach the king in her night dress or kitchen overall. Today, what used to be our mother’s underwear is what some women wear to parties, and even to their workplaces. No wonder divine favor is alien to many of them. It’s been said that you will be addressed the way you are dressed. To obtain divine favor in the sight of God, you need to be clothed in your royal apparel of righteousness which Christ gave to you when you received salvation (Revelation 1:5-6, 19:8). You will also observe that when the king saw Queen Esther, the sight of her produced divine favor, as he then held out to her the golden scepter that was in his hand. When your time of favor comes, the first thing is that you will be identified for attention. My prayer is that the Almighty King of kings will look in your direction and identify you for His favor today in Jesus’ Name. In Genesis 18:1-5, Abraham was sitting in front of his tent, just relaxing at home, when favor located him. After his show of hospitality, the carriers of favor wiped away his tears of so many years as they declared these words to him in Genesis 18:10:

“…I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son…”

The Lord will cause His favor to produce declarations that will wipe away your tears in Jesus’ Name. Our memory verse indicates that the favor Queen Esther enjoyed was actually divine in nature. Indeed, before appearing before the king, she had first sought the Lord’s favor, and this was what later manifested itself as favor with the king. Esther 4:16 says:

“Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.”

I therefore encourage you to seek the Lord’s favor and stop cutting corners. Live a life that is pleasing to the One who has the heart of those who must favor you under His control, and you will not be denied your rights in Jesus’ Name.

Prayer Point: Father, please send help to those who must favor me today, and compel them to release all my blessing that You have kept within their custody in Jesus’ Name.

Hymn 12: Take My Life, And Let It Be

1.Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.

2. Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3. Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Flatimes’ Notice Board: Please do not prolong your salvation if you have not repented. Many are going home daily and tomorrow maybe too late.

Christians tell Ofsted not to use liberalism as a cover for secularism

She says some community leaders see schools as a way to “indoctrinate impressionable minds” and bring children up with narrow horizons.

Premier spoke to Simon Calvert from the Christian Institute, who were specifically referenced by Spielman as a group with “conservative” views.

Calvert said: “I don’t quite know what she means – she was talking about voices within Anglicanism and the Christian Institute is not an Anglican organisation.”

“We have of course disagreed with Ofsted in the past and we’ve been public in our criticism in some of the things they’ve got wrong, they’ve obviously remembered we’ve done that but I didn’t think it was terribly relevant really for her to mention us in that setting.”

Speaking of her call for “muscular liberalism” in the face of some religious schools promoting their views over others’, Calvert said: “muscular liberalism shouldn’t mean some kind of aggressive secularism – and that’s the danger. Of course we would like to see Ofsted led in a way that does promote the great British tradition of genuine liberalism.”

He added: “She doesn’t seem to reflect a full understanding of what liberalism really is – which is freedom to disagree, freedom to have different points of view”.

“I think a lot of Christian educationalists are concerned about the direction of travel…they are day-in day-out helping to run schools…they don’t feel they get much credit for it they feel that instead senior educational figures talk about Christian…

United Methodist Church Membership Passes 12.5 Million Worldwide; Continues to Shrink in US

(Photo: Facebook/United Methodist General Conference)Delegates meet at the United Methodist Church’s 2016 General Conference in Portland, Oregon.

The United Methodist Church is growing globally while declining in the United States, passing the 12.5 million-member mark, according to recently released statistics.

Drawing from annual conference journals sent to the UMC General Council on Finance and Administration mostly from 2016, the UMC saw its numbers grow compared to five years earlier.

The statistics were used to determine the number of delegates each annual conference will send to the 2020 UMC General Conference.

Delegates for the denomination’s 2020 legislative gathering will represent a diverse national background, according to the United Methodist News Service.

“The 2020 General Conference in Minneapolis will have 862 delegates — half clergy and half lay. Of those delegates, 55.9 percent will be from the U.S., 32 percent from Africa, 6 percent from the Philippines, 4.6 percent from Europe and the remainder from Concordat churches,” reported UMNS.

The largest single delegation, according to UMNS, will come from the North Katanga Conference in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 50 people being sent.

The African presence in the UMC has become increasingly notable…

Levi Roots tells the Church to get entrepreneurial

Speaking at an event organised by the Pentecostal Credit Union (PCU), to promote economic development and enterprise within African and Caribbean church congregations, Roots said there were simple steps churches could take to be more business savvy.

“I’d say get an accountant! I do think that’s one of the most important things in business,” he told Premier.

“You need to protect those areas and that’s one of the things that most businesses will fall down because you’re not looking after the pennies.”

His comments followed Bishop Wayne Malcolm, known on social media as the “Business-Bishop”, telling attendees of the event how “Godly” being entrepreneurial is.

Bishop Malcolm explained: “You are no more like God than when you are creating an enterprise.

“God is in the business of creating.”

He also said for some young black and minority ethnic (BME) people, being an entrepreneur would be their only escape of poverty.

Roots told Premier the Church is vital in inspiring these future business owners.

“As an entrepreneur I think inspiration is one of the biggest things that you need because you need to try things and to fail and to learn… and that’s what an entrepreneur does,” he said.

“I think the Church teaches that – how to inspire, not just you but everyone.

“There’s no greater form of how you gather inspiration than through the church.

“I learned that from a very…

Is God on Facebook? CBS Hopes So, in Possible New Show

A smarty-pants atheist friends “God” on Facebook — and God friends him back.

The Prosperity Gospel Has Disabled 2 Continents, Africa and Latin America

(Screenshot: Facebook/Bobby Schuller)Hannah Schuller speaking with evangelist Nick Vujicic at Shepherd’s Grove church in California on January 28, 2018.

Evangelist Nick Vujicic warned that the prosperity gospel has “disabled” two entire continents, namely Africa and Latin America, in a recent message urging people to go back to the basics of the Gospel.

Vujicic, known as the limbless evangelist because he was born without arms and without legs, answered several questions on the importance of evangelism when interviewed by Hannah Schuller, the wife of pastor Bobby Schuller, at Shepherd’s Grove church in California.

The preacher argued in a video posted to Facebook on Sunday that evangelists need to go back to focusing on the “original Gospel,” without “adding or subtracting” from it.

“The prosperity gospel has disabled two continents as we speak — Africa and Latin America,” Vujicic warned.

“It is time that we go back to the basics.”

A number of nations in South America, especially Brazil, which is experiencing a growing evangelical movement, have also seen a rise in prosperity gospel preaching, with charismatic leaders offering hope to people with economic troubles.

A Washington Post article from October 2017 featured experts on Pentecostalism in Latin America, such as…
