(Screengrab: live.erlc.com)J.D. Greear, lead pastor of The Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, giving remarks at an Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission event titled “The Gospel and Politics” on Wednesday, August 5, 2015.

Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, Pastor J.D. Greear will be nominated for Southern Baptist Convention president, revealing that one of his focuses will be on racial and cultural diversity.

“We bleed missions. We bleed evangelism, and we bleed the Gospel of Jesus Christ … J.D. Greear will give us the opportunity to impact another generation while continuing to honor the former generation of Southern Baptists,” Florida pastor Ken Whitten of Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz told Baptist Press.

Greear is to be nominated at the SBC annual meeting in June in Dallas, with the 44-year-old megachurch pastor aiming to take up the role two years after withdrawing from the race in a closely contested election with current president Steve Gaines.

The main issue in that race was a debate between Calvinists and non-Calvinists over the decline in SBC baptisms. The non-Calvinists, represented by Gaines, were concerned that Reformed theology deemphasized evangelism. Greear represented the Calvinists. In a Christian Post interview at the…

Pope sends sex crimes expert to Chile to investigate bishop accused of cover-up

The Vatican said Maltese Bishop Charles Scicluna would travel to Chile “to listen to those who have expressed the desire to provide elements” about the case of Bishop Juan Barros.

The Barros controversy dominated Francis’ recent trip to Chile. Even one of his closest advisers, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, publicly rebuked thePope for his treatment of victims.

Bishop Barros was a protege of the Rev Fernando Karadima, a charismatic and politically powerful priest who was sanctioned by the Vatican for sexually abusing minors in 2011.

His victims testified to Chilean prosecutors that Bishop Barros and other priests in the El Bosque community saw Karadima kissing youngsters and were aware of his perversions, but did nothing about them.

After Karadima was sanctioned, Chile’s bishops were so intent on trying to stem the fallout from the scandal that they persuaded the Vatican to have Barros and two other Karadima-trained bishops resign and take a year-long sabbatical, according to a 2015 letter obtained by The Associated Press.

Francis stepped in and put a stop to the plan, arguing that there was no proof against them. He overruled the local bishops’ objections and in January 2015 appointed Bishop Barros to head the diocese of Osorno. Bishop Barros’ presence there has badly split the dioceses ever since, with both laity and priests rejecting him and protesting against his appointment.

The issue haunted Francis after he…

Highpoint Church Sets Date to Complete Andy Savage Investigation as National Group Calls for His Firing

(Photo: Facebook)Highpoint Memphis Church Teaching Pastor, Andy Savage.

Highpoint Church in Memphis, Tennessee, announced Monday that an investigation into the ministry of their Teaching Pastor Andy Savage, who confessed to a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old girl while he was her pastor 20 years ago, will be completed by March 1 as SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, called for his immediate firing.

Jim Pritchard, who serves as Highpoint’s administrator, told the Commercial Appeal that a separate investigation into the church’s procedures to protect children would not be completed before the assessment of Savage’s ministry.

Savage, who is on a leave of absence, revealed his past to his church earlier this month after his now adult victim, Jules Woodson, detailed in The Wartburg Watch how he coerced her into performing oral sex on him while he was her then 22-year-old youth pastor at Woodlands Parkway Baptist Church, now known as StoneBridge Church 20 years ago.

But the embattled pastor recalled the encounter very differently.

Christian charity joins call for government measure of ‘hidden hunger’

End Hunger UK, a coalition of anti-food poverty charities surveyed over 2,000 adults, which revealed shocking levels of “hidden hunger”.

Alison Inglis-Jones is from the Trussell Trust, a Christian network of food banks which has joined the End Hunger UK campaign.

Speaking on Premier’s News Hour she explained how hunger can be ‘hidden’ when friends and family don’t notice.

“Some people who are just living on the edge – who are in work, but are genuinely concerned that they may not have enough money to get through to see them through the next few days,” she said.

“So there’s obvious hunger – people coming to food banks but there’s hunger of people who are just getting by.”

Christian Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck, whose bill urging the Government to measure food insecurity will be read in Parliament on Friday, said: “Now is the time for the Government to sit up and tackle the growing issue of hunger in our country.

“We know that 1.1 million food parcels are given out in Trussell Trust food banks alone but these figures are clearly the tip of the iceberg – the United Nations has estimated over eight million people in the UK are food insecure, approximately 2,000 food banks and food bank centres are in operation, rising levels of hospital admissions due to malnutrition cost the NHS £12 billion per year and there are record levels of in-work poverty.”

The coalition said its figures revealed a “hidden hunger crisis”…

Abuse survivor sues council and Catholic Church sect

Michael Murphy, known as Brother Benedict or Brother Ben, abused children in the 1970s and 1980s when he worked at St Joseph’s School in Tranent, East Lothian.

He was jailed for seven years in April 2016 at the High Court in Edinburgh after being found guilty of physically and sexually abusing eight boys.

The physical abuse he carried out included habitual and sustained physical punishment as well as the administration of electric shocks, the Crown Office said at the conclusion of the case.

The anonymous survivor, now in his 50s, is suing East Lothian Council and De La Salle Brothers and is seeking damages estimated at a six-figure sum for the pain caused by the former schoolmaster.

He said Brother Benedict “ruined not just my childhood but my adult life”.

He added: “He abused his position while working alongside the Council and the Church to fulfil his own sick desires.

“I hope now to be able to find the means to help me rebuild my life.”

Murphy, from Liss in Hampshire, also had a previous conviction for 10 earlier assaults on boys when he worked at St Ninian’s School, Gartmore, near Stirling, between 1960 and 1969 which resulted in a 12-month jail sentence.

He has been placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Kim Leslie, Partner and Specialist Abuse Lawyer at Digby Brown Solicitors, said: “Following the conviction of Brother Benedict we are now…

Tesla in Talks With Chilean Company Over Lithium Investment

REUTERS/REGIS DUVIGNAUSeen here is a production of lithium-ion automotive batteries in France.

Tesla is reportedly in talks with Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile, Chile’s largest lithium producer as a possible partner. With the electric automaker set to ramp up production of its Model 3, it is currently seeking more stocks of the metal which is a key component in the creation of rechargeable batteries.

The deal with SQM would likely result in the creation of a new facility that would help both companies in securing the supply of raw material used in lithium-ion batteries. This is according to the executive vice-president of the Chilean development agency Corfo, Eduardo Bitran.

“With an increasing supply of lithium, Chile is key for any company that wants to become global in electro-mobility,” Bitran told the Financial Times. “Being close to Chile or having a strategic alliance in Chile becomes a strategic factor for a company like Tesla.”

With electric vehicles quickly becoming mainstream, competition for Chile’s large lithium deposits will skyrocket as demand for the metal increases. By sealing the deal with SQM, Tesla not only guarantees a steady supply of raw materials for its batteries, it can also help the automaker lower its operating costs as the price of lithium continues to soar.

Chile currently holds 54 percent of the world’s lithium reserves, around 14.3 million cubic tones. This has the potential the South American country’s economy with a potential lithium mining industry projected to attract as much as $10 billion in investment and up to 10,000 new jobs for its…

Retirement Accelerates Drop of a Person’s Verbal Memory Function, Study Reveals

REUTERS/Regis DuvignauSeniors relax by the sea in Andernos, Southwestern France, June 23, 2010.

While retirement frees people from daily job responsibilities, a new study has found that it contributes to the fast memory decline.

A major British study that monitored 3,400 retired civil servants has revealed that short-term memory declines after a person retires from work. The study was conducted by researchers from University College London and Kings College London and participated in by volunteers who underwent regular memory tests over a 30-year period spanning the final part of their careers and the early years of their retirement.

The regular memory tests included checks on verbal memory and the volunteers’ ability to remember words and also tested the volunteers reasoning as well as their verbal fluency.

As the results of the study revealed, a retiree’s verbal memory function, which naturally declines as a person ages, experiences an accelerated drop, or 38 percent faster than those who have not retired yet. Experts opine that this can be attributed to the fact that retirees lack regular mental stimulation, which accelerates memory loss and dementia.

For Professor Cary Cooper, an expert in organizational psychology at Manchester Business School, the recently released results of the study are only an affirmation of the adage saying, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” Hence, he encourages retirees to actively use their memory so that they can avert or delay Dementia.

“It makes it more likely that dementia will set in earlier. We know the more cognitively active you are the more it…
