Cuba: Christian Man is Arrested, Told ‘Our God is Fidel Castro’

“Political police” allegedly beat a Cuban Christian man after his arrest last year for “pre-criminal social dangerousness,” according to a watchdog group’s report.

Watchdog group NGO Christian Solidarity Worldwide says that Misael Diaz Paseiro was arrested on Oct. 22. State security agents confiscated two bibles, crucifixes and five rosaries from his house.

“Misael, in addition to being a counter-revolutionary, you are also a Christian,” CSW quoted a police official as telling Paseiro. “You should look at us, we are revolutionaries and we don’t believe in your God. Our god is Fidel Castro.”

Initially, Paseiro was not allowed access to his bible while in prison. He also was not allowed to have a priest visit.

In response, Paseiro’s wife, Ariana López Roque, went on a 19-day hunger strike.

According to CSW, she ended her hunger strike after being told that her husband would have more rights while in prison.

In a report released this month by CSW, there were some 325 religious freedom violations in Cuba in 2017.

“CSW is deeply concerned by the growing number and severity of [religious freedom] violations reported by a wide variety of denominations and religious groups, which seem to show that the government is attempting to tighten its control over the activities and membership of religious groups,” the CSW report reads.

“It is essential that the…

Harassment at Messianic Jews’ Center in Israel Begins Anew

Harassment at Messianic Jews’ Center in Israel Begins Anew

After opposition shut down a meeting center for Messianic Jews in southern Israel last May, ultra-Orthodox Jews are harassing it again since it re-opened this month, sources said.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews protested the presence of the center in Dimona, Israel on Tuesday (Jan. 23) and threatened some of the Messianic Jews, followers of Jesus, according to advocacy group Middle East Concern (MEC).

“Protests have taken place the last two weeks after the reopening of the center at the beginning of January,” according to a MEC press statement.

The center, where Messianic Jews meet for conversation, coffee and tea, had been temporarily closed last year due to protests by ultra-Orthodox Jews on May 4, 2017, after which they damaged Messianic Jewish leaders’ homes, breaking windows and traumatizing two children inside one home, one of the leaders told Messianic news outlet Kehila News Israel.

“Because we bent down at the right moment, we were not hit by stones thrown at us,” Albert Knoester, elder at a Messianic congregation in Beersheba, said of last year’s attacks in an interview published by Kehila News Israel. “Apart from this damage, there was also psychological trauma to one of the families in Dimona, due to the demonstrations and also because their house was damaged by stones. But also through bullying, etc., their two young daughters were traumatized…

Christian doctors and other medical staff opposing abortion face serious disadvantage, lords told

Baroness O’Loan also claimed young healthcare professionals are leaving the UK as they cannot carry out certain tasks, arguing there is a need to “reestablish legal protection” for medical conscientious objections.

The Crossbench peer’s Conscientious Objection (Medical Activities) Bill – which is being supported by the Free Conscience campaign – would apply to the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, human embryo research and activity linked to preparing, supporting or performing an abortion.

But her proposal split the Lords, with Labour’s Baroness Young of Old Scone among those voicing their opposition and describing it as “unnecessary and potentially dangerous” given existing protections.

Lady O’Loan, moving her Bill at second reading, said: “It simply can’t be consistent with conscience to say ‘I cannot do this but I will you order you to do it’.

“If one delegates, supervises or supports an activity then one is not unreasonable in concluding that one shares moral responsibility for what happens.

PA

“And there’s a lot of evidence that medical professionals are suffering serious disadvantage and discrimination for their beliefs.

“A 2016 ad hoc cross-party inquiry into freedom of conscience and abortion provision specifically received many accounts by medical professionals who have experienced discrimination during…

Trump’s First-Year Report Card: How’d He Do on Issues Important to Evangelicals?

Trump’s First-Year Report Card: How’d He Do on Issues Important to Evangelicals?

In the days after Donald Trump’s surprise election in 2016, conservative evangelical Christians made clear their high expectations for the president they had helped put into office.

Has Trump met those expectations?

“When it comes to his very strong statements on life, on support for Israel, on the Iran nuclear deal, on religious freedom and on judges, we fully expect him to keep his pledge … to the American people,” Faith and Freedom Coalition founder and chairman Ralph Reed said at the time.

Fully 80 percent of white evangelicals voted for Trump.

Here’s a look at how he fared on some of the issues they most care about in his first year of office.

Evangelicals in the White House

Just this week, the Senate narrowly approved Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, a conservative Catholic, as U.S. ambassador for international religious freedom.

Brownback shares conservative evangelicals’ views on same-sex marriage and abortion. And he’s one of many high-ranking evangelicals in the Trump administration: Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Vice President Mike Pence are just a few with evangelical bona fides.

Other evangelical religious leaders have reveled in their “unprecedented” accessto the White…

Southern Baptist Convention Added to Sexual Abuse Suit Against Former Judge Paul Pressler

(Screenshot: YouTube)Former Texas state judge and lawmaker Paul Pressler, 87.

The Southern Baptist Convention has been added as a defendant in a lawsuit alleging that former Texas state judge and lawmaker Paul Pressler sexually abused a former Bible study student he hired as a home office assistant for decades, starting when he was just 14 years old.

The 15-million member organization was added to the lawsuit on Jan. 12 after it was initially filed in a Texas court on Oct. 18, according to the Tennessean.

Gareld D. Rollins Jr., the plaintiff who is now in his 50s, accuses the SBC and seven other defendants, including Pressler and his wife, Nancy, of fraudulently misrepresenting to the public “that Pressler was a Godlike, sexually safe, moral, and great person of the earth who, as a magistrate, worked God’s wisdom and thus would not be sexually dangerous to minors.”

The lawsuit also names the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, its president, Paige Patterson, and Houston’s First Baptist Church as defendants, alleging they are liable for their professional, personal or denominational connections with Pressler.

The Christian Post reached out to the SBC for comment Friday and no one was immediately available. In a statement to the Tennessean, however, spokesman for…

Open Heavens 27 January 2018: Saturday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Fruit of the Spirit V

Open Heavens 27 January 2018: Saturday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Fruit of the Spirit V

Topic: Fruit of the Spirit V [Open Heavens Saturday 27 January 2018]

Memorise: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” – Matthew 5:44

Read: Acts 7:54-60 (KJV)

54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Bible in One Year: Exodus 9-10, Romans 2:12-3:8

MESSAGE

To conclude our reflection on the fruit of the Spirit, we shall today be considering temperance. To be temperate is to have self-control. Temperance enables you to remain cool, calm and collected in the midst of dire situations. Through the manifestation of temperance, you will save yourself the pain of hasty and rash pronouncements that you will later regret. Temperance will restrain you from overreacting in situations that could make you lose your integrity. It takes the restraint of the Holy Spirit to turn the other cheek to those who despitefully use you (Luke 6:29). To better understand temperance, just picture Stephen in excruciating pain and about to die, praying for God’s mercy on those who stoned him to death. This is the hallmark of a life full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:55). The Lord Jesus Christ also manifested this nature on the cross of Calvary (Luke 23:34). When He was arrested and tried, it was temperance that enabled Him to restrain Himself from putting up a defence. There would have been no redemption if Jesus Christ had defended Himself. Matthew 27:13-14 says,

13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.”

I reckon that in the course of His trial, the Holy Spirit would have continually brought to His remembrance what was written concerning Him in Isaiah 53:7-8. When you cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit, whenever you are faced with a situation of conflict, in order to restrain you, the Holy Spirit will remind you of who you are and where you are going. He will also put words in your mouth if there is a need for you to respond. This is how His nature of temperance is manifested in our character.

As we conclude our study on the fruit of the Spirit, you need to be reminded that walking in the Spirit is the process that brings about the manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit in us. The Holy Spirit is a Person and not a force, and so He will not compel you to fellowship with Him, even though He resides inside you. You need to yield yourself to Him and cultivate His friendship for His fruit to manifest in your life. Here is the key to walking in the Spirit, from Amos 3:3

“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

Your life needs to be in agreement with His principles for you to walk with Him. He is the Promise of the Father, and He is willing to abide with you if you will make your life habitable for Him.

Action Point: Take out time to sing to the Holy Spirit, and tell Him how much you appreciate His ministry in your life.

Hymn 2: I Need Thee Every Hour

1. I Need Thee every hour,
Most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford.

Chorus:
I need Thee, Oh, I need Thee,
Every hour I need Thee;
Oh bless me now, my Saviour;
I come to Thee.

2. I need Thee every hour;
Stay Thou near by;
Temptations lose their pow’r
When Thou art nigh.

3. I need Thee every hour,
In joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide,
Or life is vain.

4. I need Thee every hour;
Teach me Thy will,
And Thy rich promises
In me fulfil.

5. I need Thee every hour,
Most Holy One;
O make me Thine indeed,
Thou blessed Son.

Bishop slams ‘archaic’ marriage certificates

Home Office minister Baroness Williams of Trafford offered support to the Registration of Marriage Bill, which seeks to implement reforms to move from a paper-based system to an electronic register.

Such a change to the way marriages in England and Wales are recorded would make it possible to include mothers’ details – which are excluded under current rules.

Rt Rev Alan Smith told the House of Lords on Friday it was “archaic” to only allow a father’s name to be recorded – noting this has been unchanged since Victorian times.

While moving the draft legislation, he said: “The purpose of this Bill is to correct a clear and historic injustice.”

For the Government, Lady Williams said the changes would increase the security of marriage records as open marriage register books and blank certificates held in some 30,000 religious buildings can be a target of theft.

Parliament Live TV

Addressing the timetable for implementing change, Lady Williams told the Lords: “Subject to the successful passage of the Bill, implementation will involve – clearly amongst other things – affirmative regulations being made and system changes, training and guidance for local registration services and for those who solemnise marriages.

“I will aim to implement these reforms as soon as possible following royal assent.”

She added: “I know noble lords will recognise the…
