Prayers offered after search for missing fishermen is scaled back

Duncan MacDougall and Przemek Krawczyk, who were named locally, were on board the Nancy Glen when it got in to trouble in Loch Fyne.

The alarm was raised by a third man who was pulled from the water by the crew of a passing boat at around 6pm on Thursday.

He told rescuers his vessel had capsized and there were two more fishermen in the water, off the Argyll and Bute coast.

Despite efforts of those on scene to keep it afloat, the 40ft fishing vessel has sunk.

A major search rescue was launched but more than 20 hours later the men had still not been found and the operation has been scaled back.

It is understood all of the Tarbert fishing fleet have also gone out to help with the search efforts.

A spokesman for Tarbert and North Kintyre Churches said: “This is a close-knit fishing community and everyone is absolutely devastated by what has happened.

“The Church of Scotland and Free Church of Scotland are working closely with Matthew Ramsay of the Fishermen’s Mission in Argyll to support the community and the emergency services personnel involved in the search operation.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this heart breaking incident.”

Julie-Anne Wood, head of maritime operations for HM Coastguard, said: “We are in regular contact with the missing men’s families.

“It is a very distressing time for them and the local community as a whole.

“The search will continue until dark tonight and will…

VISA Waging War Against Bitcoin By Rejecting It As Currency

REUTERS/Benoit TessierSouth Korea’s digital currency exchange, Bithumb, is still under investigation after an attack.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency by market cap, Bitcoin, is a commodity and not a payment system. This is according to VISA CEO Alfred Kelly who revealed that the company will no longer process transactions using the cryptocurrency.

“I don’t view it as payment system player,” Kelly said in a recent interview with CNBC. “We at Visa won’t process transactions that are cryptocurrency-based. We will only process fiat currency-based transactions.”

Fiat currencies, such as the US Dollar, are issued by governments as legal money. However, their value is not backed by any physical commodity but rather trust on the government issuing them.

Bitcoin was originally created and intended as a replacement for fiat currency in transactions. Unlike fiat currency, the digital currency is not issued by anyone but rather “mind” by powerful computers which solve certain algorithms. The miners then write those transactions to the online blockchain ledger, where all activity is recorded and shared with everyone.

Today, Bitcoin acceptance as a payment system has been rather limited thanks to its volatility. As bitcoin turnover grows, it also faces problems like high fees, astoundingly slow transactions and volatile prices making them unable to compete with established players like VISA which can process thousands of transactions every second with little to no fees.

According to Kelly, who became the company’s CEO in December 2016, Bitcoin today is a commodity that somebody could invest in, a…

RCCG Sunday School Students Manual January 21st, 2018 Lesson 21 — Integrity – Part 2

RCCG Sunday School Students Manual January 21st, 2018 Lesson 21 — Integrity - Part 2

TOPIC: Integrity – Part 2 [Sunday, 21st January 2018]

MEMORY VERSE: “And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?” – Job 1:8

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 39:1-13

1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.

2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.

4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.

6 And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.

7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

INTRODUCTION:
Men and women of integrity are very few, even among the so called children of God. Are you a man or woman of integrity? Can God vouch for you as He did for Job (Job 2:3)? King David in Psalm 25:21 affirmed by saying “let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.”

LESSON OUTLINES:
1. Biblical heroes of integrity
2. Scope and rewards for integrity

BIBICAL HEROES OF INTEGRITY
The Bible has records of people that exhibited integrity. They include among others Abimelech, the King of Gerar (Genesis 20:3-7), Joseph (Genesis 47:14), Samuel (1Samuel 12:3-4), King David (1Kings 9:4), Job (Job 2:3, 9-10), Apostle Paul (Acts 20:32-33) and our Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:30).

SCOPE AND REWARDS FOR INTEGRITY
As believers, we need to demonstrate integrity in all aspects of human endeavours. In speech (James 1:19; Proverbs 8:7-8), in time management (Ephesians 5:15-17; John 9:4), in finance (1Corinthians 4:2; Genesis 47:14), in relationship with the opposite sex (1Corinthians 5:1; 1Samuel 2:12, 22-23; Judges 16:1,4), in keeping promises and paying of vows (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5), etc.

Integrity, although costly, has great rewards. These include – God vouching for you (Job 2:3), keeps you from falling into sin (Genesis 39:9), brings peace (Psalm 37:37), guides one’s steps (Proverbs 11:3), preserves a man (Psalm 25:21-22), and brings generational blessings (Proverbs 20:7).

CONCLUSION:
God is pure and He expects His children to be pure too (Matthew 5:48, 2Timothy 2:19). No matter your claims, if you are not a man or woman of integrity, your Christianity is questionable. Remember that only the pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8).

QUESTIONS:
1. In what areas are we expected to show integrity?
2. Mention some rewards of integrity.

12 people seriously injured as mob sets fire to church

The British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) suspected the attack on Sehal Christ Church in Nowshera was done in revenge to the perceived murder of a forcibly converted Hindu woman.

The charity said Seema Devi died after battling an illness but following a local newspaper reporting that her uncle suggested she didn’t willingly convert from her Hindu faith to Christianity, locals began to believe her husband murdered her.

Christians attending the church for prayers were beaten by the mob that later turned their attention to Christian run businesses, causing “thousands of pounds worth of damage”.

A local Christian named William Masih, told BPCA officer Pastor Naresh: “I am totally shocked by what happened I saw innocent Christians flee from the church and saw two Christian shops being looted before they were razed to the ground.

“The violence was unwarranted and has left much fear amongst local Christians, we already feel marginalised.

“Despite Police witnessing the attack we expect little justice and the perpetrators of the violence will probably escape capture by the police.”

BPCA said the exhumed body of Seema was also set on fire as part of a Hindu burial ritual.

Wilson Chowdhry, Chairman of the BPCA said: “This attack on Innocent Christians highlights the increasing hatred towards non-Hindus in an India that has become increasingly polarized under the Narendra Modi regime.

“Despite having signed the UN…

Why CAR-T Cell Therapy is a Promising Cure for Leukemia

REUTERS/National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health/HandoutCancer cells are seen in this undated handout image.

CAR-T cell therapy may be the long-awaited effective cure for leukemia.

In August last year, the FDA finally approved CAR-T cell therapy treatment after an additional 50 more patients who had been subjected to the trial went into remission. Patented under the brand name Kymriah, CAR-T therapy treatment is now available to other children and young adults under the age of 25.

“Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy cure a little over half of people who develop cancer. But that means almost 600,000 Americans die of the disease every year. With the approval of CAR T, we’re taking a first step toward a completely new approach to curing cancers that have been incurable,”opines Steven A. Rosenberg, MD, PhD, chief of the surgery branch at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and one of the pioneers of the process to use a patient’s own immune system to defeat cancer.

CAR-T cell therapy is a type of cancer treatment that involves the process of using a patient’s T cells, a type of immune system cell, and altering them in the laboratory so that they can attack the cancer cells. These cells come from the extracted blood of a patient, and a certain protein in these cells bind to a gene for a special receptor referred to as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR).

The innovative cancer treatment is no panacea at this point in time, though, as it is only approved for the treatment of ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia), specifically those patients aging between three and 25 years old and…

Church bells to be protected from noise complaints under new rules

Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid, told The Daily Telegraph: “Churches have been part of British life in towns and villages for centuries.

“Their bells should not be silenced by new housing going up which is why planning policy will be strengthened to ensure it will be up to developers building new properties nearby to identify and tackle noise problems.”

The promise follows the bells at St Peter’s Church in Sandwich, Kent being silenced between 11pm and 7am in November 2017 after a single neighbour complained.

Almost 3,500 people signed a petition to keep the bells ringing, which for the last 238 years, had rung every 15 minutes between 11pm and 7am.

Becky Clark, the Church of England’s director of Churches and Cathedrals, welcomed the new rules.

She told The Telegraph: “The Church Buildings Council – the body which helps dioceses maintain church buildings – supports the continued use of church buildings as places of worship, including proclaiming their presence through the ringing of bells.

“We maintain a register of historic bells, some of which date back to the 13th century, and provide grants to help with their care and conservation. Bell ringing has been part of Christian worship for a thousand years.”

Putin takes subzero dip in icy lake to mark Orthodox Christian feast

Russian television stations showed the 65-year-old Mr Putinapproaching a hole cut in the ice on Lake Seliger in north-western Russia before dunking himself in and crossing himself.

Mr Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the president had dipped in icy waters on the Epiphany before, but Friday marks the first time he has publicly done so.

In Orthodox tradition, water blessed by a priest during Epiphany week is considered holy and pure, and believers attribute healing powers to it.

Authorities set up bathing sites for believers all over Russia, including some areas in Siberia where temperatures dipped below minus 30C.

‘Hallelujah, I’m feeling a lot better’ teacher says before mystery death

Peter Farquhar, 69, was looked after in him Maids Moreton home by two former students as his health deteriorated in the final months of his life.

Ben Field, 27, a church warden, and friend 31-year-old Martyn Smith, a magician were arrested this week on suspicion of his murder and the murder of his neighbour Anne Moore-Martin, 83, who also died suddenly after a short illness 18 months later.

A friend of Mr Farquhar told The Times that he had described his former students as being like sons and appreciated their care.

Mr Farquhar, a Christian, emailed friends in October 2015 to say that, while he had been through an “awful patch” and endured a spiritual battle, he was feeling a lot better.

A coroner ruled in 2015 that his death was an accident after a post-mortem examination concluded “acute alcohol intoxication”.

Field from Towcester, Northamptonshire, Smith from Redruth, Cornwall, were arrested on suspicion of two counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to murder, two counts of suspicion of fraud by false representation, conspiracy to defraud and one count of burglary.

They have both been released on bail until 13th February.
