Do President Trump’s Business Holdings Present a Conflict of Interest?

A recent report from Public Citizen, a liberal/progressive watchdog group, uncovered 64 instances of Foreign Governments, Federal Government Departments, Republican Candidates, and others using properties belonging to the Trump Organization. Among the names listed were the Republican National Committee, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Committee of 100, the Malaysian Government, and the Saudi Arabian Embassy. Proponents of the report argue that this indubitably shows a conflict of interest for President Trump.

However, tying President Trump to these actions is difficult considering that Trump relinquished control of his organization to his sons Trump Jr. and Eric via placing the organization into trust fund. What this shows is that, not only does Trump have zero power over his organization, but there is no way of knowing whether Trump had any sway in or cognizance of these business dealings. To prove a conflict of interest, one must prove awareness of those interests in question. Without providing evidence of cognizance, it is difficult to determine what Trump’s level of familiarity with these dealings was or whether they held any weight in his political decisions.

That being said, if these dealings genuinely demonstrated collusion between Donald Trump and the foreign and domestic governments and political organizations in question, then this raises serious questions of…

‘Christian’ mother of children kept in filthy conditions ‘perplexed’ at police interest

Riverside County sheriff’s Captain Greg Fellows described the reaction of 49-year-old Louise Turpin but did not know the reaction of the father, 57-year-old David Turpin.

The children, some of them chained to furniture, were described as weak and small for their age. Capt Fellows called it torture.

The abuse was discovered when a 17-year-old girl jumped out of a window and called 911 Sunday. The sheriff’s captain said officers had never been to the home and neither had social service workers.

Corona Regional Medical Centre chief executive Mark Uffer said his facility was treating seven of the adult children. Mr Uffer said they are small and clearly malnourished but were stable and very friendly.

Turpin’s father, James, said he was surprised by news of his son’s arrest.

James and his wife Betty said that they are considered to be a good Christian family in their community and that added that “God called on them” to have as many children as they did.

The pair also said their grandchildren had “very strict homeschooling,” and they would memorise long passages of the Bible, some of them aimed to learn the entire Bible.

James  said all 13 children were his son’s biological offspring and none were adopted.

David and Louise Turpin were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of torture and child endangerment. A court appearance is…

Queen Elizabeth Shares Amusing Princess Charlotte and Prince George Anecdote

Queen Elizabeth is not just the longest reigning British monarch. She’s also a doting great-grandmother to Princess Charlotte and Prince George. The British royal recently shared an anecdote about the two children from grandson Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton.

REUTERS/Matt CardyQueen Elizabeth is the great-grandmother of Princess Charlotte and Prince George.

The Queen was having a conversation with a mom and her kids at the Sandringham estate when the subject of siblings came up. Emily Clay, who was there to receive a signed Bible from the Queen, remarked that among her daughters, it’s the 6-year-old who would always look after the 10-year-old.

The royal then told Clay that the set-up is the same with her two great-grandkids. Queen Elizabeth said that Princess Charlotte, 2, is the one looking after her big brother, Prince George, 4.

The observation jives with the royal kids’ mother. The Duchess of Cambridge once remarked that it’s her daughter who’s actually the real queen of their household.

Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte recently started her first day of school at Willcocks Nursery near Kensington Palace. Her older brother, on the other hand, began preparatory school at Thomas’s Battersea last September.

The Cambridge kids reportedly don’t go to the same school because their parents recognize that they have different temperaments. Princess Charlotte is the type who likes to be in charge, while Prince George is the lively kid who enjoys the outdoors. Hence, they were sent to schools that fitted their personalities.

In other news, Princess Charlotte is also learning a second…

The Christian Baker Religious Freedom Case Isn’t the Only One before the Supreme Court

The Christian Baker Religious Freedom Case Isn’t the Only One before the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court will consider another case relating to free speech and religious freedom— this time in the matter of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates and the state of California.

California law, the FACT Act, requires pro-life pregnancy centers to place a notice in their centers advertising the state’s low-cost and free abortions available to qualifying women.

In 2016, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that the FACT Act is constitutional. Critics, however, said the act forces pro-life professionals to advertise state-sponsored abortions.

David French, an attorney who filed an amicus brief in the case, says the NIFLA “should win its case 9-0.”

“Pro-life professionals, as part of their daily lives, are forced not only to be messengers for an ideological point of view (that it is appropriate for the state to provide abortion access) but even to abet a course of action (calling the listed phone number) that can culminate in the death of an unborn child — the very thing that pro-life pregnancy centers exist to prevent,” he said in his amicus brief.

French said in another case Supreme Court ruled in a New Hampshire case that the state couldn’t force people to transform private property into “billboards” for the state’s “ideological message.”

“The Court ruled that the First Amendment ‘protects the…

New guide helps Catholic women get quicker marriage annulments

The revised 4th Edition of ‘A Guide to the Annulment Process’ is supported by the Marriage and Family Life Office at the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

It was first published in 1998 with the goal of de-mystifying the annulment process, “making it easier to understand, and hopefully less stressful”.

The 4th Edition now takes into account a document issued by Pope Francis in 2015 which gives a more streamlined and readily accessible way of proceeding with an annulment.

According to NBCW, the pope’s emphasis on mercy in the document, “The Gentle Judge, our Lord Jesus, the Shepherd of Souls”, is central to the new procedures which help reduce the time taken to process a case, and assist diocesan bishops to use their judicial power for the good of those in their care.

In his foreword, the Rt Rev Peter Doyle, Chair of the Bishops’ Committee for Marriage and Family Life, described the 4th edition as “a resource to assist all those in our communities whose marriages have failed, and those accompanying them; and restore to them, with the mercy of God, hope and confidence on the journey of faith in the light of the Gospel.”

The National Board of Catholic Women is a forum in which Catholic women of England and Wales come together to share their views and concerns at local and national level.

NBCW president Maureen Meatcher said she hopes the booklet will help women…

There’s Room for Compromise on FEMA Helping Houses of Worship

There’s Room for Compromise on FEMA Helping Houses of Worship

Disaster relief is the latest front in our never-ending conflict over church and state. Specifically, the question is whether Federal Emergency Management Agency aid should be available to help houses of worship rebuild when disaster strikes.

Earlier this month, FEMA issued new guidelines removing restrictions on such aid. This flies in the face of a 1971 Supreme Court decision, Tilton v. Richardson, which said it would violate the establishment clause for religious colleges or universities ever to use a facility they built with public funds for religious purposes.

But last year’s Trinity Lutheran decision, which said a church could not be barred from applying to a public program to resurface its playground, opened the way for a challenge to Tilton. Three Texas churches harmed by Hurricane Harvey sued to obtain FEMA rebuilding funds, a federal judge turned them down, and the churches took their case to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Now, of course, the legal challenge will come from the other side — as in the church-state separationists who filed a brief supporting FEMA’s prior position: Americans United, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Anti-Defamation League and the Baptist Joint Committee.

The Trump administration, which embraces any religious rights claim not made by Muslims, will be defending the new FEMA rule.

In the meantime, however,…

Perry Noble Lashes Out at ‘I Am Praying for You’ Text, Calls It Condescending

Expand | Collapse
(Photo: Perry Noble Facebook)Former NewSpring church pastor Perry Noble in this photo posted on July 20, 2017.

Pastor Perry Noble, now of Second Chance Church and formerly of NewSpring Church in South Carolina, has hit back against a text message that someone was praying for him, and explained why it provoked “real, pure anger.”

Noble wrote on Facebook Monday that the text that got him riled up read “Hey Perry, I just wanted to reach out and let you know I am praying for you.”

The former megachurch pastor did not reveal who the text was from, but admitted that he felt “anger…real, purge anger….confusion…disbelief.”

“Why? Because the person who sent me the text has not spoken to me in 18 months; in fact, they ignored my calls to them during that time — and I know for a fact they have gossiped, even told flat out lies about me!” he explained.

“So why in the hell did they text me to tell me they are praying for me? It’s quite simple (and, unfortunately the reason far too many ‘Christians’ tell others they are praying for them!),” he stated, before suggesting a number of reasons.

Noble argued that sending such a sentiment helps relieve a person’s conscience, including in cases where they don’t actually care about the subject.

“It places them in a place…
