According to the Diocese of Bristol, the team at St Nicholas Church will be led by Rev Toby Flint, who is currently the lead pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton in London.

The church will focus on younger generations, as 60 per cent of the people in the city centre are between the ages of 15 and 29.

St Nicholas will partner with other churches and organisations as it gets involved in social action, including looking at ways to tackle homelessness, food poverty and youth unemployment.

Rt Rev Dr Lee Rayfield, acting Diocesan Bishop, said: “As Bristol becomes younger and more diverse, we want to make an impact on the city.

“We are excited about how St Nicholas will grow the Church and bring about social transformation.

“This is one way in which we will be developing our commitment to making more disciples, engaging younger generations and connecting with our communities in our changing city.”

St Nicholas closed as a church following bomb damage during the Second World War. It was leased to Bristol City Council and was rebuilt as a museum telling the story of Bristol and making reference to the church setting.

A central feature of the church is a large altar picture piece by William Hogarth originally commissioned for St Mary Redcliffe and subsequently passed on to the city.

Christian volunteers ministering to pop-up communities in Calais say vicars and pastors need repeat reminders to take the issue seriously.

The faith-based charity Seeking Sanctuary estimates that 800 migrants are currently living in the port town, 15 months since a make-shift settlement dubbed the Jungle was cleared.

Co-director Ben Bano, told Premier: “This issue is getting a little stale for some people.

“It’s difficult to get the kind of interest that was around last year, or certainly the year before, because people have almost got used to the situation; there’s a degree of donor fatigue.”

The royal couple began the visit by touring sections destroyed by a Second World War bombing, before exploring its modern replacement.

In his walkabout in the Cathedral Ruins, Prince William followed in the footsteps of his great grandfather King George VI, who visited the Ruins two days after the bombing that devastated the city in November 1940.

In the new Cathedral, the couple heard about how Coventry emerged from those dark days to join other cities that had suffered, to spread a message of forgiveness and reconciliation.

They also learned about how the cathedral’s work continues today in war zones around the globe and through organisations such as the Community of the Cross of Nails.

The couple then took part in the Coventry Litany of Reconciliation, a prayer aimed at healing the wounds of history and building a culture of peace.

While preparing to take the royals on the tour, Rev Cannon David Stone from Coventry Cathedral told Premier his aim was to make sure as many people could see the couple as possible.

“I think it’s all been very carefully worked out so as many people as possible can see the Duke and Duchess as they’re here,” he said.
