Bible unscathed in church petrol bomb attack

Members of the Baptist church in Kyrgyzstan are said to have been “inspired” by the text’s survival, which has been described as an “amazing sign”.

Paul from Operation Mark, a Christian ministry operating in Kyrgyzstan, said: “This is an amazing sign.

“This happened once before when Communists set fire to a Pentecostal Church during the night.

“The Bible and that building survived too, and there is no doubt the church in Kyrgyzstan will survive – and continue to preach the gospel.”

The Evangelical Christian Baptist Church in the north-eastern town of Kaji Say was doused in petrol before being pelted with Molotov cocktails.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred in the early hours of last Wednesday, but there is already speculation Muslim militants were to blame.

Release International, a charity supporting believers around the world who are facing pressure for their faith, warned that opposition to churches in the Muslim-majority nation is growing.

The organisation said the attack may have been in revenge for a series of outreach meetings held by the Evangelical Christian Baptist Church.

Christian MPs react to Trump cancelling UK visit

President Trump confirmed he will not travel to the UK to open the new American embassy, and hit out at the location of the $1.2 billion (£886 million) project.

His announcement prompted a wave of tweets from MPs, who suggested they did not want him to come in the first place.

Christian and Labour MP Stephen Doughty told Sky News Trump’s visit could have caused a dangerous situation.

He said: “I think Britain has a great tradition of very non-violent and peaceful protests but, on the other hand, there were some very serious concerns already raised about the types of disorder and division that could be seen if Donald Trump came here.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan suggested the real reason why Trump cancelled his…

Zambia bans church services to combat cholera epidemic

The Zambian government announced that all gatherings would be stopped to combat the infectious disease which has been spreading at an alarming rate since October 2017.

The Council of Churches in Zambia, Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia, and Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement praying for God’s peace during the national crisis.

Their ‘Statement of National Dialogue’ read: “We pray for God’s peace, comfort and encouragement during this time of national crisis.

“We pray for the various teams working on the ground to fight the cholera outbreak so that this may be overcome quickly and life may be restored to normal.”

The Zambian bishops’ conference has also decided to suspend the “sign of peace” in a bid to curb the epidemic.

Meanwhile, riots have erupted in a slum in Lusaka, with people violently protesting against the government’s ban on street vending. This has also been done in order to contain the spread of the deadly disease.

Nvidia Partners With Volkswagen, Uber For Self-Driving Cars

Reuters/Robert GalbraithThe logo of technology company Nvidia is seen at its headquarters in Santa Clara, California

Nvidia is partnering up with Volkswagen and ride-sharing company Uber to develop self-driving cars. This was announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show and stems from the recent advances made by the graphics chipmaker’s artificial intelligence platforms.

According to the company, the key to their partnership was the Nvidia Xavier processor – touted as the world’s most powerful system on a chip (SoC). In addition to their partnership announcement, the company also revealed that there will be samples of the chip for select people in the first quarter of this year.

“The complexity of future cars is incredible,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at a press conference this week. “It begins with Xavier, which can do deep learning, computer vision and high-performance computing at highly efficient levels.”

Nvidia says that the Xavier chip can do 30 trillion operations each second on just 30 watts of power. The company also claims that the actual size of the chip is much smaller than what’s currently available with the example showing Xavier working on a board that’s not even as big as a license plate.

While Nvidia might be a household name for many when it comes to gaming thanks to their top-of-the-line GPUs (graphics processing units), they have also branched out from their core business becoming a top player in the field of cryptocurrencies and SoCs.

Prior to their partnership, Uber has been using Nvidia’s GPU computing technology since its first test fleet of Volvo SC90…

Robin Roberts: My sister saved my life

Sally-Ann Roberts has worked for a New Orleans television station for forty years, twenty-six of them as co-anchor of its morning show. She will be retiring next month. Why is this story making national news?

Because her sister is Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts. And because, as Robin explained, “the only reason I’m here living, is she was my bone marrow donor.” When Robin was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder in 2012, her sister’s sacrifice saved her life.

In other words, Robin Roberts is alive because her healthy sister made Robin’s problem her problem.

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof reports that every day, the number of people in the world living in extreme poverty goes down by 217,000. Every day, 325,000 more people gain access to electricity; 300,000 more gain access to clean drinking water. In another fifteen years, illiteracy and extreme poverty will mostly be gone.

Since 1990, the lives of more than 100 million children have been saved by vaccinations, breastfeeding promotion, diarrhea treatment, and other simple steps. These remarkable advances were facilitated by people who did not have the problem they set out to solve.

In other news, a sophomore basketball player at the University of Texas is generating headlines today, not for what he has done on the court but for what he must now do off it. Andrew Jones has been diagnosed with leukemia and has begun treatment.

His jersey now occupies a spot on the Texas bench. A halftime video offered tributes from nearly every UT team. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and West Virginia coach Bob Huggins have voiced their encouragement.

None of them has Andrew Jones’s disease, but he has their support.

Burial held for 72 Nigerian Christian farmers killed by Fulani herdsmen

Sobs could be heard in many videos shared online from the thousands of residents who attended the ceremony held in Makurdi, Benue State capital to see the procession of coffins with crucifixes on them.

The clash between the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic militants – groups of semi-nomadic herdsmen and Christian farmers happened on New Year’s Day.

The governor of the state, Sam Ortom said during the service that the herdsmen “went on a rampage wielding machetes”.

He also claimed the killings were done to intimidate the state government to repeal a controversial ban on open cattle grazing implemented in November, which Fulani herders have complained targets them unfairly.

Mr Onoja said that herdsman had a “misconception” the law was against them.

He went on to say: “[Until now] Fulani herders have been a law unto themselves.

“We want them to adopt ranching. These clashes result from the encroachment of cattle on farmers’ land.”

Some of the residents told local news reporters they were worried about the effect incessant attacks on farmers in the state would have on the state’s economy which heavily relies on agriculture.

Violence between Christian farmers and Fulani herdsmen has
