Churches ‘must plan for Divorce Day’

The Association of Christian Counsellors said clergy should anticipate the phenomena, which culminates in what has been dubbed Divorce Day – which falls on 8th January this year.

Vice chair, Sue Monckton-Rickett told Premier: “It is a fact; I think that lots of counselling agencies across the country in January do start to see people coming in – perhaps more than at any other time in the year – with relationship issues.”

The Association encouraged church leaders to organise talks by experts and themed sermons which address relationship issues, in the months prior to Christmas.

Listing other ways churches can support couples facing difficult times, Sue Monckton-Rickett said: “Being there for people, listening to their pain, listening to their sadness, being practically very much on the ground, trying to help people, sign-posting them to where they get other support.”

Money pressures, long work hours, domestic duties, not spending enough time together and a lack of physical intimacy are among the issues most commonly-cited by couples seeking to split.

A poll of more than 2,000 British people by the legal firm Slater and Gordon found financial strains could drive one in ten married couples to split this year.

HTC Hints New 4K Vive Announcement

REUTERS/Tyrone SiuA pair of HTC’s Vive Virtual Reality (VR) goggles, is seen during annual Computex computer exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan June 1, 2016.

HTC is teasing a new Vive-related announcement this Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018 press conference in Las Vegas. Many are expecting a possible 4K update to its Vive virtual reality headset, a significant upgrade to the 2,160 x 1,200 display being sported by the current headset.

HTC posted an image on Twitter on Saturday with special emphasis on the word “resolution.” Fans took this to be a hint for a newly upgraded headset that will supplant the original Vive headset which was released in April 2016.

In the current model, 2,160-pixel by the 1,200-pixel display is stretched across both eyes resulting in a less immersive experience. By getting up to 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), the current resolution would be doubled. Even if HTC settles for sub-4K resolution, it would still be a massive upgrade if it could stretch as far as today’s big-screen TVs.

In addition to the upgraded resolution, two of the rumors that have been floating with regards to the HTC Vive 2 namely more immersive controllers and wireless operation. However, the CES 2018 teaser seems to suggest a minor upgrade rather than a full blown new model.

That being said, all of these are still speculation so be sure to take it with a grain of salt. All will be made clear at the CES 2018 where HTC is set to make its big announcement regarding a possible upgrade to its Vive headset.

HTC’s quest to be competitive in the market dominated by big names such as Oculus and Sony…

Churches urged to raise awareness of alcoholism

Theresa John, who has been clean of drink and drugs for four years, said the Alcohol Health Alliance’s findings highlight how churches should help raise awareness of the issue.

Theresa, who works as an administrator at Victory Outreach Manchester – a church which operates recovery homes for those affected by alcoholism – told Premier: “Even within our own circles, whether it’s in work or church, we need to be training people that these guidelines are actually quite stringent.”

The poll of 2,000 people fond 84 per cent of people were unaware of the Chief Medical Officer’s advice that both men and women should keep their drinking to a “low” level, not exceeding more than 14 units per week.

The research, which the Alliance commissioned from the national polling firm OnePoll also found only three per cent of people were aware that an alcohol-free childhood is considered best.

Theresa John went on to say: “With my own personal experience, one of the things that I recognise is I didn’t know the guidelines.

“Some of the drinks I was consuming, although it may have been one can, the percentage of alcohol in them was far exceeding the units you were meant to have in one day.”

Fourteen units of alcohol is approximately equivalent to 6 pints of four per cent beer, six glasses of 13 per cent wine or 14 glasses (25ml) of 40 per cent spirits.

When asked, only ten per cent of the respondents named cancer when they were asked…

Bitcoin Could Herald The Arrival Of Quantum Computers

REUTERS/Jemima KellyAn interior view of U.S. bitcoin mining company Bitfury’s mining farm near Keflavik, Iceland, June 7, 2016.

Bitcoin could be the horn that sounds the arrival of a working quantum computer, albeit in a very unconventional fashion. Alex Beath, a Toronto-based physicist and pension fund analyst claims that the cryptocurrency could detect when someone creates a working quantum computer – by being mined out.

“The second someone creates a viable quantum computer, the NP-complete math problems at the heart of Bitcoin mining tech become instantly solvable,” Beath notes in an interview with Fortune. “In other words, one answer to the question ‘what’s the first thing you’d do with a quantum computer?’ is ‘mine all of the remaining Bitcoin instantly.’ Until that happens, nobody has a quantum computer.”

Beath’s off-the-cuff observation also underscores a serious problem: the rise of a new era of computing. Once it arrives, the system that created vast cryptocurrency fortunes will also be the one to collapse it.

This threat to Bitcoin and other software systems that use the same type of encryption is that they are vulnerable to a quantum-based attack. This was predicted years ago and Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin even wrote about how to defend against such attacks.

However, unlike in 2013 when Buterin’s report was published, tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, and IBM are making huge breakthroughs in quantum computing. At the rate they are going, it is certainly possible to create a working quantum computer before the last Bitcoin is mined.

Currently, engineers are hindered…

Dying woman’s ‘life advice’ goes viral

“It’s a strange thing to realize and accept your mortality at 26 years young. It’s just one of those things you ignore. The days tick by and you just expect they will keep on coming. Until the unexpected happens.”

This is how a dying woman’s letter to the world begins.

Holly Butcher was from Grafton, in New South Wales, Australia. She was an athlete, representing her state in squash and hockey. But she developed Ewing sarcoma, an extremely rare form of cancer, and died last week.

Her family then posted her letter on Facebook. It is making global headlines today.

Holly notes that life is “fragile, precious and unpredictable and each day is a gift, not a given right.” She advises us to “work to live, don’t live to work” and to “do what makes your heart feel happy.”

She realizes that time spent on small frustrations–“You might have got caught in bad traffic today, or had a bad sleep because your beautiful babies kept you awake, or your hairdresser cut your hair too short”–is time wasted: “I swear you will not be thinking of those things when it is your turn to go.”

And she notes that life is not in our control: “I don’t want to go. I love my life. I am happy . . . I owe that to my loved ones. But the control is out of my hands.” However, this is in our control: “Tell your loved ones you love them every time you get the chance and love them with everything you have.”

Facing death can bring great clarity to life.

Two men who “walked with God”

I have been thinking recently about Enoch, a man who “walked with God, and he was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). According to the English Standard Version Study Bible, “walked” translates a Hebrew verb that “conveys a sense of an ongoing intimacy with God.”

What does it mean to “walk with God” in this way?

A few verses later we read, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9)….

The New Normal for Church Security

We recently experienced a new tipping point for church security.

A tipping point is the critical juncture in evolving developments that leads to a new and, often, irreversible state. We call that new state “the new normal.”

In church security we have witnessed two major tipping points. Though child sex abuse in churches was not new, it reached a new level of awareness and response when Pope John Paul II called an emergency meeting with the U. S. cardinals in 2002. We knew then the issue was serious and pervasive.

We reached a second major tipping point in November 2017 with the church shootings at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Among the 26 people killed were nine members of one family. Church leaders and members across the nation began to realize that if it can happen in Sutherland Springs, it can happen anywhere.

I recently conducted a social media survey to ask church leaders and members to share what their churches were doing for church security. I then went to the Church Answers community (ChurchAnswers.com) for more in-depth responses. Here are some realities of the new normal as articulated by these respondents:

    • Church security measures have shifted dramatically. We learned that while church security measures are not new, there has been a noticeable change since the November 2017 shootings. Many churches instituted church security measures for the first time. Even more implemented additional security measures after the 2017 shootings.
    • There is a resistance to…

Rapist John Worboys ‘found God’ in prison

The former London taxi driver, who was convicted in 2009 of 19 offences including rape, is also said to be reading his Bible every day.

A prison source told the Daily Star: “Worboys is seriously misguided and I believe is potentially still a danger to women.

“He thinks he is born again since embracing religion and that he has been forgiven.

“He says he is a changed man – but how can this be proved?”

According to the newspaper, the 60-year-old became a believer after attending Church of England services at the maximum security Wakefield prison in West Yorkshire.

The source went on to say: “A cynical person might think he’s done this as the best way of getting parole.

“He then shows remorse, admits his guilt and fulfils the requirements of the Parole Board.”

Worboys could be free within weeks after a three-person panel at the Parole Board approved his release, concluding he no longer posed a risk to the public.

On Sunday, it emerged a review by the Justice Secretary David Lidington will investigate how the Parole Board for England and Wales makes its decisions, following shock among some of Worboys’ victims at news he will be released so soon.
