Each week brings the anniversaries of great milestones, horrid tragedies, amazing triumphs, telling tribulations, inspirational progress, and everything in between.

Here are just a few things that happened this week, Jan. 7-13, in church history. They include the Council of Trent, the death of the first female Quaker preacher, and a famous twentieth century martyrdom.

Topic: Preach the Word [Open Heavens 8th January 2018]

Memorise: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: – Matthew 28:19

Read: 2 Timothy 4:1-5 (KJV)

1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

MESSAGE:

You will observe that parents often pass across their most important instructions to their children at the time they about to leave the world. In like-manner, our Lord Jesus Christ, when He was about to leave this world, gave us the instructions contained in our memory verse today. The Body of Christ refers to this set of instructions as The Great Commission. Due to the place of this mandate in the heart of God, I always encourage my spiritual children to be guilty of the error of neglecting to act upon it. Not only must we do the work of The Great Commission, we must also do it right. We must be like a certain torch bearer at a railway crossing, whose responsibility was to warn people from crossing the rail lines whenever a train was approaching. He indeed waved the torch at the sight of an approaching train, but alas, the torch had no light in it. You can be sure the result of such error of omission would be catastrophic. It is terrible to not engage in evangelism, but it is much more terrible to engage in it as an empty routine. On the other hand, it is life-giving when we engage in it with all due diligence.

In 2 Timothy 4:2, the Holy Spirit gave us a template for what the mode of our evangelism and content of our message should be:

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

From this scripture, we understand that the gospel should be preached when it is convenient (in season), and also when it sounds offensive to the society we live in (out of season). We also understand from this scripture that our gospel message should contain reproof, rebuke, exhortation and doctrine. Many preachers today chose not to dabble into doctrinal issues because they would not want to be caught in controversies. You hear them saying, “I am sent to preach prosperity or deliverance and not doctrine!” One wonders whether they are preaching the same message given by the Holy Spirit to the early disciples, which put Stephen and James to death. Are they preaching the same gospel that landed and Paul and Silas in the midst of controversies and ultimately in jail? Should we, because of the fear of controversies, imprisonment or even death, fail to preach the word as we ought to? God forbid (Revelation 2:10)! I encourage you, if you have encountered the saving grace of Jesus Christ, to rise up for the salvation of others, in season and out of season, by preaching the unadulterated word of God to them.

Action Point: Organise a line of action on evangelism in your local assembly and ensure that the undiluted word of God is preached regularly through it.

Paula White Urges Followers to Sow ‘First Fruits’ Offering of Up to 1 Month’s Pay

Popular televangelist Paula White is urging her followers to donate a “first fruits” offering of up to their entire salary for the month of January to enjoy “blessings” for the rest of the year or suffer the “consequences” of failing to follow God’s command.

“Each January, I put God first and honor Him with the first of our substance by sowing a first fruits offering of one month’s pay. That is a big sacrifice, but it is a seed for the harvest I am believing for in the coming year. And God always provides!” White explains on her website.

She explained the difference between the tithe, usually 10 percent of earnings, and the first fruit donation.

“The difference between tithe and first fruit, first fruit is all of it,” she told congregants at the New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, Florida, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “All of what? Well, if you want to bring God all of one day’s salary, one week’s salary or one month’s salary, that’s between you and God. … I try to bring a month’s salary, but at the very least every year I give God a week’s salary.”

Speaking at the Passion conference he founded more than two decades ago, Pastor Louie Giglio spoke to tens of thousands of Christian youth about the working of the Holy Spirit and the unfinished work of the Church, which he said will help answer the most fundamental question about their lives.

In his message, Pastor Giglio encouraged the audience at Philips Arena in metro Atlanta to ask two questions: “What’s my purpose or calling, and can I get past my past?”

It’s a great thing to wake up every morning and know you’re living on a purpose, he told them, adding that it’s also important to get past your shame, guilt, disappointments, breakups in the family, and so on.

Giglio said Acts chapter 2 in the New Testament focuses on the finished work of Christ and the unfinished work of the Church, and can help them answer the two questions.

The pastor dealt with the second question first.

The World’s Largest Cathedral Is in New York and It Is Really, Really Massive

The world’s largest cathedral isn’t in Europe.

You would be mistaken if you thought St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome held that distinction.

It is actually the Cathedral Church of St. John Divine, seat of the Episcopal bishop of New York.

And as you might expect, St. John the Divine is massive. So much so that its official capacity is reportedly 4,500 people.

As its nickname St. John the Unfinished infers the cathedral is far from complete, though construction has been stalled for decades.

Nevertheless, it is truly magnificent — perhaps one of the most striking cathedrals I have ever visited, if only because of its shear size and blend of architectural styles.


When construction started in 1892 the design by architects George Heins and Christopher LaFarge called for the Romanesque Revival style, but by 1911 when Ralph Adams Cram took over following the death of Heins it had morphed into 13th century French Gothic.

While not intended the combination of two distinct styles actually made it like many of the great English cathedrals that seamlessly blend Romanesque or Norman with the later iterations of Gothic.

At St. John the Divine, the east end — the oldest part — is Romanesque Revival. The most visible element is the gigantic columns separating the high altar and ambulatory. The rest of the cathedral, including the nave, is typical of Gothic Revival, though there are also more modern additions.

Church of Scotland appoints ‘minister for farming’

Rev Chris Blackshaw, who was previously the Chaplain at the Cumbria Agricultural Chaplaincy, is a Methodist minister and has also worked hard at encouraging farmers to talk about their mental health and support each other. 

His new role will see him continue to support agricultural families and provide a bridge between them and the National Union of Farmers in Scotland. 

In a Church of Scotland statement they say: “The new role has been warmly welcomed by National Farmers Union Scotland and rural charity RSABI who say the perilous state of the ailing sector is taking a ‘serious’ toll on the health and wellbeing of many people who too often ‘suffer in silence’.”

Rev Chris responded to the role positively: “There are not many jobs I couldn’t do on a farm so this is the ideal job for me – showing people the love of Christ by walking alongside them.”

He said: “I go to the local market and call at farms to let people know I am there to provide support and share in celebrations and happy times as well.”

Chris added: “I have been very pleasantly surprised by the faith that exists amongst the farming community.”

Rev Chris Bradshaw  will continue to visit the weekly livestock mart and attend annual agriculture shows and hopes to host a lambing thanksgiving service on a sheep farm in the future.
