John Piper Explains How and Why You Should Read the Entire Bible in 2018

(Screenshot: YouTube/Desiring God)John Piper, founder and teacher of desiringGod.org and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary, giving remarks as part of a live video message on YouTube called “Together for Good?” on the evening of Thursday, November 30, 2017.

Many Christians make New Year’s resolutions to read the Bible more, and theologian John Piper is encouraging believers to read it daily, in four places, and study it from cover-to-cover within a year.

But the method of reading God’s Word isn’t nearly as important as the reason why Christians read the Bible, Piper says.

In a New Year’s Day “Ask Pastor John” post on Desiring God, the former pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, explained why he used the Discipleship Journal Reading Plan — a free resource available online — in 2017 and will be using it again this year.

“The way it works is — this is why I use it and why I recommend it — there are four different places in the Bible where you read every day,” Piper explained.

“By reading these four different places, you complete the entire Bible in one year. Two of those places are in the New Testament, two of them are in the Old Testament.”

Because the New Testament is much shorter than the Old Testament, the two daily readings from the…

Vicar quits residents’ group over trees dispute

Rev Chris Colledge from Dorset accused the association of endorsing vandalism for wanting to remove the rotting trees.

Rev Colledge of the West Cliff Residents’ Association told The Daily Telegraph: “The wildlife, birds and lovely trees make the area what it is.

“I cannot support criminal intention and activity.”

A homeowner is believed to have drilled into three trees in 2016 and put poison inside in a plot to improve their sea view.

Arboricultural experts from Bournemouth council confirmed the trees all tested positive for very high levels of the substance herbicide glyphosate, according to local reports.

Saplings planted next to the trees were also damaged.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting crime number 55160093780.

Police Kill Christians in Government Protests in DR Congo

Police Kill Christians in Government Protests in DR Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country in central Africa, has been experiencing severe unrest. Protests have erupted, resulting in loss of innocent lives.

According to The Christian Post, at least eight Christians were killed by police officers for joining in protests against the country’s current president, Joseph Kabila.

DR Congo police reportedly opened fire and deployed tear gas in several churches on Sunday to retaliate against Christians for joining the protests and carrying Bibles and crucifixes.

In addition to the eight people killed, dozens of others were arrested.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been embroiled in turmoil after Kabila refused to step down from power. The government then banned protests, alleging that it did not have the manpower to monitor them.

Kabila has been the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2001, when the reigns of power were transferred to him following his father’s assassination. Kabila claimed he would relinquish power after elections in 2017, but appears to have gone back on that promise.

DR Congo is a predominantly Catholic country, and religious leaders have been among the first to call the country’s government to task. They have also suffered the consequences of their opposition.

The Catholic Church reported back in June 2017 that as many as 3,383 people had been killed in the country…

Christian politician Ann Widdecombe set to enter Celebrity Big Brother house

The Mirror newspaper says the 70-year-old is a last minute signing for the show, which returns tonight.

To mark 100 years since women were given the vote the series will start with an all-female lineup.

So far it has been revealed that journalist Rachel Johnson, sister of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, will be among those to be welcomed into the house by returning presenter Emma Willis.

The new series will see the women “take part in a series of entertaining tasks and hidden experiments which will test their – and our – assumptions, challenge gender stereotypes and reveal fascinating truths about what it is to be a woman – and man – in the 21st century”.

Channel 5 has said male contestants will enter later on.

Widdecombe previously told Premier she would never do Celebrity Big Brother.

“I think there are lines to be drawn,” she said whilst taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.

“I always refused to do Big Brother and one year I did come under a lot of pressure to do it but I’m not interested, I disapprove, I think its voyeurism.”

The show begins at 9pm on Tuesday night on Channel 5.

Open Heavens 3 January 2018: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – The Overcomers

Open Heavens 3 January 2018: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – The Overcomers

Topic: The Overcomers — Wednesday 3, January 2018

Memorise: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. – Joel 2:32

Read: Revelation 21:1-7 (KJV)

1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

Bible in One Year: Genesis 5-7, Revelation 21:18-3:6, Hymn: Sing Hymn 3: What Can Wash Away My Sins

MESSAGE:

Since the advent of sin into this world, life has become a battle for mankind. In the battle of life, one is either an overcomer or a victim. My prayer for you is that you will live the rest of your life as an overcomer in Jesus’ Name. Today’s memory verse expressly reveals to us the secret of overcoming in the battle of life:

“…whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered:”

However, the truth in this verse of scripture throws up this question:

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?” Romans 10:14

Therefore, before you can overcome by calling on the Name of the Lord, you need to first believe in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ and in His finished work on the cross of Calvary. When you believe this and you confess so with your mouth, you become “born of God”. Here is what the Bible, in 1 John 5:4-5, says about those who are born of God:

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

Living the reality of being an overcomer in this world means that you daily experience the victory that Christ has obtained for you over the enemies of your body, soul and spirit. It means living your life everyday as having been delivered from the power of sin, and when you overcome sin, you have invariably overcome death, which is at the pinnacle of the battle of life. James 1:15 says,

“Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

Are you under any siege in the battle of life? Has life dealt you so many blows that you do not have the will to go on? Don’t give in to depression, and don’t contemplate suicide. This is a great time for you to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, through genuine repentance. In prayer, call upon the Name of Him That is able to save, and you will overcome! Are you saved but still living under the shackles of this world? It is time to realise who you are, shake yourself up from the dust of pity and begin to enforce the victory that Christ has won for you!

Action Point: Call on the Name of the Lord convening any area of life where you have been experiencing defeat.

Hymn 3: What Can Wash Away My Sins

1. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Chorus:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

2. For my Cleansing this I see
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
For my cleansing this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

3. Nothing can my sin erase
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Naught of works, ’tis all of grace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

4. This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Israeli Prime Minister Takes Stand for Persecuted Iranian Christians

Israeli Prime Minister Takes Stand for Persecuted Iranian Christians

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he stands with Christians in Iran.

“We stand with you, brothers and sisters,” he said. “The world stands with you.”

The supportive statement comes after Iran’s foreign minister tweeted a “hypocritical” tweet days before Christmas.

“A very happy and peaceful Christmas to all. May Christ’s universal message of peace be embraced in the coming year,” he said.

Netanyahu says, however, that the Christmas greeting is hypocritical because Iran has been ranked as one of the world’s harshest persecutors of Christians.

“I wonder what the Christians jailed this month in Iran would think about that tweet,” he said in a taped message posted on his Facebook and Twitter pages.

In Iran, house churches are considered illegal and government security raid the churches regularly. Many of the worshippers and leaders are imprisoned, while bibles are confiscated.

“Imagine praying quietly in your home, surrounded by your family—and all of the sudden, armed thugs burst in and drag you away to prison. They torture you merely for practicing your Christian faith. Welcome to Iran. Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ while jailing Christians in your own country is the height of hypocrisy,” Netanyahu said.

This is not the first time that Netanyahu has brought awareness to the persecution of Christians in Iran.

In October, he told…

Francis Chan says churches can feel like zoos

In a sermon called ‘Unleashed as a Family-Raising and Releasing the Next Gen of Kingdom Builders’ at the Chinese Missions Convention, the Christian author said: “A few weeks ago I was in Brazil and I was having lunch with a pastor out there.

“He’s a Korean guy but his church in Brazil is not just Koreans, they had Brazilians, Portuguese speaking, mixed services.”

Chan expressed how he had been impressed with the Brazilian pastor’s mixed services of all nationalities.

But the Korean pastor said: “It still feels kinda like a zoo”.

He compared his church to the film Madagascar where a zebra wants to be in the jungle rather than a cage where people bring him food.

In Chan’s sermon he agreed with this analogy and said: “This pastor was saying our church is so much like that – it feels like a big zoo.

“We’ve got these animals and the only way they survive is if someone feeds them.

“It’s a great picture of the church where you have these people that have so much power inside of them but all we want to do is keep them in these cages.”

He explained that churches often have a “children’s ministry cage, a youth min cage, a singles cage and a married couples cage”.

“The reality is you were made for something more,” he added.

“I felt like I was that lion inside the Chinese cage sometimes growing up.”
