Report: 40 Percent of Births in U.S. Occur out of Wedlock

A report from the Senate showed that about 40 percent of births in the United States happen out of wedlock.

The hike in non-marital births is likely a result of “moral, behavioral, and social changes” since the “Sexual Revolution overhauled the American landscape,” said Robert VerBruggen, deputy managing editor at the National Review.

The Senate report, “Love, Marriage, and the Baby Carriage: The Rise in Unwed Childbearing,” was released this month. It was prepared by the vice chairman’s staff of the Joint Economic Committee at the request of Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah).

Meanwhile, the report found that “shotgun” marriages have fallen. In the early 1960s, 43 percent of unwed pregnancies led to “shotgun” marriages. Today, that number is 9 percent.

“We ridicule this norm, because we forget that it had the benefit of protecting the interests of children in having relationships with both parents,” said Jennifer Roback Morse, president of the Ruth Institute.

“The most just solution for the child, is for the parents to marry each other, and work together for a lifetime for the good of the child, and their whole family. We accept injustice to children as the price we are willing to pay for adult sexual freedom and ‘gender equality.’”

The report also said that falling abortion rates has contributed to the uptick in births outside of marriage.

“Further societal…

Russell Moore Says Charlie Brown Kept Him From Quitting Ministry in Face of Church Hypocrisy, Sin

(Screenshot: Baylor ISR)Russell Moore is president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said the character Charlie Brown kept him from quitting ministry when facing church hypocrisy, sin, and deep depression.

“On my desk where I do most of my work there stands a Charlie Brown bobblehead figurine,” he said of the beloved character, who made his debut in the Peanuts comic strip in 1950.

“I take that little comic strip figure very seriously because he kept me in ministry on two very different occasions in which I was ready to quit,” he said in a blog post Wednesday.

The first occasion, Moore recalled, was early on in his ministry, when he found himself “in a deep depression after seeing things about the underbelly of church life that I wished I had never seen: hypocrisy, backbiting, cover-up, and Darwinian power politics.”

One night he was thinking about whether he even wanted to go back to church, let alone serve in ministry, given what he knew about human depravity, including his own, when he turned on the TV and saw “A Charlie Brown Christmas” playing.

It was the words of Luke 2 in the King James Version, as recited by one of the characters,…

“It’s obviously a journey and a challenge,” she admitted. “Women know how to get stuff done. They know how to suck it up, and they know how to plow through. And a lot of times we had to put our heads down and do what was needed for the circumstance, especially me, as a…

How to Navigate Life With God’s Wisdom From Proverbs (Interview)

(Photo: Godwell Andrew Chan)Timothy Keller, author of Making Sense of God: An Invitation to the Skeptical, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NYC.

A new daily devotional book from Tim Keller, one of the most esteemed pastors in the United States, draws upon the book of Proverbs to help Christians navigate life with God’s wisdom.

“When you actually want God to direct your life — you want to know how should I be spending my money, how should I be regarding my money, raising my children — obviously there’s good stuff all through the Bible on all these things, but there’s really no place that gives so much attention to every area of life” than the book of Proverbs, said Keller in a phone interview Tuesday with The Christian Post.

Keller’s latest book, God’s Wisdom for Navigating Life: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Book of Proverbs, which he co-authored with his wife, Kathy, is a companion of sorts to their previous devotional, The Songs of Jesus, in which they wrote daily meditations on the Psalms.

And though the two books are right next to each other in the Bible and in many people’s minds they go hand-in-hand because of how they entertain wisdom and spirituality, writing a daily devotional on the Proverbs proved more challenging, the author explained.
