Conventional wisdom may say “change the name, start fresh.” Today, we explain why that often is bad advice.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM KYLE

In a replanting situation, should we rebrand the church and change the name?

Episode Highlights:

  • When you change the name of a church, it typically gets changed to something generic and nondescript.
  • Quick fixes may change the results, but they typically don’t change the heart of the people in your church.
  • There aren’t any easy pathways to church replanting.
  • Changing a church’s name shouldn’t be the first thing you run to in a replant.
  • Christ will never give up on us. What Christ has started in us, He will finish.
  • It takes a lot of work to reclaim with a community the name of a dying or dead church.
  • Want to change the perception of your church in the community? Serve the community with abandon.

The six keys to revitalization after a split that we discuss are:

  1. Prayer is foundational, including repentance
  2. Deal with the anger and hurt
  3. Be patient, perhaps waiting a season
  4. Commit to pray for the other church
  5. Move resources and emotions from inward to outward
  6. Accept the reality of more departures

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing…

TREM’s Daily 7 December 2017 Devotional by Dr. Mike Okonkwo – Be Deeply Rooted

TREM’s Daily 7 December 2017 Devotional by Dr. Mike Okonkwo - Be Deeply Rooted

Topic: Be Deeply Rooted — Thursday December 7, 2017.

“As you, therefore, have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him; rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have Bible, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2: 6-7 (NKJV)

Beloved, the days are gone when as a believer you still play church. Today, the devil is out of his closet and is roaming the streets in full view, not being secretive about his person or assignment. The incidences of evil manifestations around the world are alarming. And just as the Bible said, the church is not left out. The prevalence of many wolves dressed as sheep, false prophets and teachers standing behind the sacred desk and desecrating God’s altars are alarming. The rather unfortunate thing is that many will be deceived by these false prophets and magicians and fall as prey to the enemy as the Bible says. So the question is, “How can you escape this corruption that is in the world today?” The answer is as is in the scripture above – be rooted and established in Him!

Apostle Paul admonished the Colossian church, having received Christ, to tow the path that He has laid down in general life conduct and behaviour. Here the believer is likened to a tree of righteousness. The word “rooted” in this context means “to become stable”.  So what was he saying? As a believer, recognise that Christ is your root and you derive all your life nourishment, and fruitfulness from Him, as long as you remain in Him.

Beloved, if you are going to be deeply rooted, continually built up and established in the faith then you must be taught. The book of Hebrews 10:25 (KJV) says, “Not forsaking the assembly of ourselves together, as the manner of some is…” Therefore, God in His wisdom has raised for you a platform where you can be equipped. Such that you are continually built and established in the knowledge of Him. Always be in the place where the word of God is preached undiluted, unadulterated, and the Holy Spirit is given absolute liberty.
