White House Displays Beautiful Nativity Scene with Baby Jesus

First Lady Melania Trump is spearheading Christmas decorating efforts at the White House. The theme for this year is “Time-Honored Traditions,” and included in that is a beautiful nativity scene.

In a video the First Lady posted on Twitter, viewers can see the nativity scene, which shows Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus with a crown, as well as other stunning Christmas decorations.

“The decorations are up!” Melania Trump tweeted, “@WhiteHouse is ready to celebrate! Wishing you a Merry Christmas & joyous holiday season!”

Included in the White House Christmas decorations is a huge 300-pound gingerbread replica of the White House itself, complete with Christmas wreaths in each window.

Other decorations, according to BusinessInsider.com include 53 Christmas trees, more than 12,000 ornaments, 18,000 feet of Christmas lights, and 71 wreaths. LifeSiteNews.com reports that there are also cookies, bows, candles, and other reminders of the holiday season.

According to the White House Historical Association, “The White House at Christmas traditionally has been a magical place for children,” and this year that tradition continued as the First Lady welcomed children of military service members to the White House to make Christmas wreaths.

President Trump has often reiterated that “We’re gonna start saying Merry Christmas again!” and the White House decorations seem…

Relatives of family killed in Texas church massacre sue US Air Force

Joe and Claryce Holcombe have alleged in their claim that the Air Force’s actions “directly caused this horrific tragedy,” as they failed to follow their own policies by not reporting the shooter’s criminal history to the FBI.

Mr Holcombe told CNN: “We want to see this sort of thing not happen again, and I think if the Air Force had have done its job properly this wouldn’t have happened.”

Crystal Holcombe, 36, and three of her children, Greg, 13, Emily, 11, and Megan, 9, were all killed, while her husband John Holcombe, was among the massacre’s few survivors.

His parents, 60-year-old Bryan and Karla Holcombe, 58; brother, 36-year-old Marc Holcombe, and Marc’s 18-month-old daughter, Noah, were also killed when Devin Patrick Kelley, opened fire at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, killing 26 people and injuring 20.

The family’s claim states: “Although (Kelley) undoubtedly ‘pulled the trigger’ that resulted in injuries and death of J.B. Holcombe and others, the failures of the US Air Force, and others, allowed the shooter to purchase, own and/or possess the semiautomatic rifle, ammunition and body armour he used.”

On Wednesday, the Air Force released a statement which said that it’s “review of its reporting processes to civilian law enforcement in the Devin P. Kelley case has prompted immediate actions to correct reporting deficiencies and prevent future occurrences”.

The review also found the error…

Archdiocese of Washington Sues D.C. Transit System for Banning Their Christmas Ads

Archdiocese of Washington Sues D.C. Transit System for Banning Their Christmas Ads

The Archdiocese of Washington has filed a lawsuit against the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority because the WMATA reportedly refused to allow the Archdiocese’s Christmas – to be displayed on transit vehicles.

According to The Washington Post, the WMATA alleges that the ad goes against company policy, which states, “Advertisements that promote or oppose any religion, religious practice, or belief are prohibited.”

However, the Archdiocese believes the WMATA is restricting their freedom of speech and maintains that the ad “conveys a simple message of hope, and an invitation to participate in the Christmas season.”

The ad shows a group of shepherds walking up a mountain and encourages Metro and bus passengers to visit a church this Christmas season. This is part of the Archdiocese’s annual initiative during the holidays, called findtheperfectgift.org.

Ed McFadden, Secretary for Communications for the Archdiocese of Washington, explained the case in these terms, making reference to the beloved holiday classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”: “To borrow from a favorite Christmas story, under WMATA’s guidelines, if the ads are about packages, boxes or bags … if Christmas comes from a store … then it seems WMATA approves.”

“But if Christmas means a little bit more,” McFadden continued, “WMATA plays…

3 Ways Congress Could Be Forced to Clean Up Its Own Act .

Last week, I asked my Twitter followers, “Do you believe that Congress will clean up its own act when it comes to dealing with members guilty of sexual harassment?” A staggering 91 percent responded with “No way!” while only 1 percent voted for “Absolutely!” (The other 8 percent chose “I think so.”)

If the lawmakers are the lawbreakers, this cynicism makes perfect sense. Yet Congress might be forced to clean up its own act, like it…

the number gay weddings at churches

Researchers at Leeds and York universities have concluded 182 venues have registered to hold same-sex weddings, while approximately half of those have actually hosted one.

They reported: “Over half of the places of worship that have solemnized a same-sex marriage have done so on only one occasion.

“Nineteen places of worship report that they have solemnized one same-sex marriage, eight report that they have solemnized two same-sex marriages, and four report that they have solemnized three same-sex marriages.

“Only five places of worship have solemnized four or more same-sex marriages, with the highest number of same-sex marriages solemnized in any place of worship reported as 10.”

The academics said the number remains “very small”, compared to the 40,000 places of worships currently prohibited from holding same-sex weddings.

Baptists, Lutherans, Unitarians, the United Reformed Church, and other designated religions – included Buddhists – were included in the study.

The academics conclude that same-sex couples wanting to marry in a religious setting face a “significant disadvantage”, compared to heterosexual couples.

Study co-author, Dr Silvia Falcetta, from York’s Department of Sociology, said: “This report shows that same-sex couples are at a significant disadvantage to different-sex couples, because same-sex couples are more likely to live in an area where there is no scope to be married in a place of…

NBC fires Matt Lauer for ‘inappropriate sexual behavior’

Matt Lauer has been a fixture on American television for more than two decades. He began his career at NBC News as a news anchor on the Today show. In 1998, he became co-anchor of that program and has continued in that capacity for nearly twenty years.

Lauer has co-hosted the opening ceremonies of several Olympic Games. He has appeared on numerous other television shows and has interviewed presidential candidates and global celebrities. He has been one of the most recognizable and successful figures in American culture.

This morning, NBC News announced that he had been fired for “inappropriate sexual behavior.” NBC News Chairman Andy Lack released a statement to his employees that begins:

“On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”

Lauer’s Today show co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb announced his firing at the beginning of this morning’s broadcast. Near tears, Guthrie said, “All we can say is we are heartbroken; I’m heartbroken.”

She described Lauer as “a dear, dear friend” and added that she was “heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story.” She continued, “How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly?”

As you discuss this developing story with friends and colleagues today, please remember three biblical principles.

Private sin never stays private.

Jesus warned us, “Nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light” (Luke 8:17). He added,…

Zimbabwe flag protest pastor cleared of subversion charge

Evan Mawarire – who launched the #ThisFlag protest campaign on social media – was found not guilty by High Court judge Priscilla Chigumba after state prosecutors failed to prove their case.

He appealed to the country’s new leadership to drop other prosecutions of people who demonstrated against former president Robert Mugabe.

The ruling came as Zimbabweans wait to see whether new President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former deputy of Mr Mugabe, follows through on pledges of democracy after years of violations of basic freedoms.

There are still some Zimbabweans “in prison for political reasons, in terms of having stood up against the regime” of Mr Mugabe, Mr Mawarire said outside the courthouse in Harare, the capital.

“Many are still appearing in court over the next few weeks and I want to urge this new government and administration to drop those charges and let those people go, because they did not commit any crime at all.”

Mr Mawarire, who stood in the dock with a Zimbabwean flag, said he was “absolutely elated” at his acquittal but claimed it was too soon to tell whether it reflected a trend towards more independence in the judiciary, which was often subject to political pressure during the Mugabe era.

“It could be evidence of a freer Zimbabwe but I think also this case had no legs from the beginning,” Mr Mawarire said.

“I think that a lot more needs to be seen for us to determine whether this is a free judiciary going forward.”

10 Mistakes Churches Make at Christmastime

By Jonathan Howe

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. Some would even say it’s the most wonderful time of the year. While it still has its wonderment, Christmastime has a tendency to be stressful as well—especially in the church. Unfortunately stress can lead churches to plan poorly and make unnecessary mistakes. Here are ten such mistakes to avoid in your church this Christmas:

  1. Missing the focus. This may seem basic, but please keep the birth of Christ as the focus in your church this year. Everywhere people turn at Christmas, they see Santa, presents, and all the other material trappings of the holiday. The church should be one place where people can be reminded of the true reason to celebrate—the coming of the Christ.
  2. Decorations outpace invitations. We talk a lot about outward focus vs. inward focus on the blog and podcast. This is the Christmas version of that tension. While nothing is inherently wrong with decorations, when members are more focused on what the church looks like than whom they’re bringing with them, there’s a problem. Remind your people that it’s more important to focus on who’s in the pews than what’s on the walls.
  3. Scrooge serves on the greeter team. Jim Collins’ popular “seat on the bus” paradigm fits well with volunteer teams. Make sure you not only have enough people volunteering for Christmas services (because you’ll likely have larger crowds), but also make sure you have the right people in the right places. No one wants to meet Scrooge…

North Korea missile reports prompt prayer plea

A Christian peer who founded a parliamentary group to monitor North Korea also encouraged believers to pray that China might exercise wisdom as its key mediator.

Co-chair of the group, Lord Alton, told Premier: “Wisdom should be at the forefront of the situation on all sides in dealing with North Korea.

“Simply increasing the retoric and name-calling makes a dangerous situation even more dangerous.”

Officials in South Korea and the United States have been monitoring the trajectory of the missile, which Seoul claims launched from an early north of Pyongyang early on Wednesday.

Urging North Korea to adher to cease actions which might esalate tensions, China aso said it was “seriously concerned” by the apparent latest missle launch.

The test was condenmed as a “provocative action” by Russia, which warned the move could damage efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis.

Lord Alton added: “I am not surprised that they [the North Koreans] have cranked up the rachet, this is something that they have done seriously.”
