Christian group welcomes waste-tackling measure in new budget

Chancellor Philip Hammond announced on Wednesday that single-use plastics such as packaging and polystyrene takeaway boxes could be taxed to tackle waste.

While a tax isn’t set in stone, the measure shall be considered.

It’s hoped a tax on single-use plastic will help prevent pollution in the world’s oceans and protect the environment.

Responding to the Chancellor’s announcement, Tearfund’s Senior Associate Joanne Green said: “As we’ve seen on our TVs recently plastics are increasingly being found in the stomachs of whales, dolphins and fish, and microplastics have been found in both fish and sea salt for human consumption.

“This has potentially serious but as yet unknown consequences for human health.”

Green also drew attention to how better waste management services can help developing countries.

She added: “Two billion people in developing countries do not have any waste management services whatsoever.

“Increasing waste management services would help tackle the half of marine litter which comes from developing countries, as well as directly improve public health in developing countries: reducing diarrhoeal diseases and eliminating the estimated 270,000 premature deaths a year attributed to open burning of waste.

“I want the UK Government to use some of our aid budget to extend waste collection in developing nations to save lives and reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans.”

The Government has said that the…

Pope Francis to visit Baltic States in 2018

A spokeswoman for Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite confirmed the trip to the Baltic News agency in the country’s capital Vilnius.

She said: “In principle, we have the decision, we’ve heard it. Officially it will be announced in December.

“The occasion is beautiful because the Baltic States will celebrate the centenary.”

She added that the visit is scheduled for autumn of 2018 but the Vatican is yet to announce the exact dates for the trip.

It will be the pontiff’s first visit to the Baltic nations since his election over four years ago but the second time a pope has visited.

Pope John Paul II visited all three Baltic states in 1993.

More than 75 per cent of the nation’s nearly 3 million inhabitants are Catholics.

The three Baltic nations declared their independence from Russia in 1918 but were incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940 and remained part of it until 1991.

Open Heavens 24 November 2017: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Obedience Must Be Total

Open Heavens 24 November 2017: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Obedience Must Be Total

Topic: Obedience Must Be Total — Friday 24, November 2017.

Memorise: For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. – 1 Samuel 15:23

Read: 1 Samuel 15:16-24 (KJV)

16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?

20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

Bible in One Year: Psalm 44-49, Micah 1, Hymn: Sing Hymn 14 – Take My Life

MESSAGE:

In our walk with God, total obedience is the key to success. If you will walk with God, then you must be prepared to obey Him completely. If you decide to obey some instructions, delay your obedience to some or even flout some others, you will definitely have problems with God. If you doubt this, ask King Saul. From his experience, we can see that partial obedience is the same thing as full disobedience before God. Saul was sent on a mission by God with specific instructions which were clearly spelt out to him with these words in 1 Samuel 15:3:

“Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.”

You are reading Open Heavens 24th November 2017: Friday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Obedience Must Be Total

But when he got to the point of executing the instructions of God, he obeyed some, ignored some and outright disobeyed some. 1 Samuel 15:9 says,

“But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.”

He ignored and disobeyed some of God’s instructions because he wanted to remain in the good books of his soldier. What was the end result of this act? He was rejected and abandoned on the throne, while God chose a replacement for him. May God never reject you!

A further lesson here is that it’s not everyone rejected by God that He dethrones immediately. After Saul’s rejection, he was still on the throne for years, while God was already relating with David as king. During this period, how did Saul rule over the kingdom? As a lunatic of course! Today, like Saul, many leaders and pastors have been abandoned by God in the position they occupy. Although such people still maintain the status quo, the power to help them succeed is no longer available to them. Never be carried away by anyone occupying any position. It is only God who knows those who are standing and those He has rejected on their thrones! Are you in obedience? Do you obey God completely? Beloved, obey every instruction you are given by God completely, and you can be certain that all will be well with you.

Key Point: Disobedience robs you of the spiritual standing you require to succeed in your walk with God to a place of higher glory.

Hymn 14: Take My Life

1. Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.

2. Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3. Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Government minister tells Christian charities they’re free to speak openly about faith

With concerns that some would miss out on funding or face punishment, many charities have been wary about how explicit they can be about the faith element of their work.

Speaking at the Raising Funds for Christian Charities and Churches conference in London, Crouch acknowledged there had been problems in the past but she wanted that changed.

“I know that some of you here feel that successive governments and local authorities have wanted to applaud all the good things that you do as Christians, but discourage you from speaking openly about the faith that motivates you,” she said. “I assure you that that is not the intention and I encourage you to challenge anyone in government who makes you feel you need to suppress your faith.

“I very much appreciate that, for so many of you, the inspiration to do such amazing acts of service in your communities comes directly from your Christian faith.”

She also gave an assurance that no Christian organisation would face discrimination when it came to government contracts and grants.

She said: “I know that some faith organisations feel they miss out on commissioning opportunities.

“I want to make it clear today that any organisation, religious or otherwise, is eligible to apply and be considered for government funding.

“We want to make sure that funding is awarded to those who are best placed to deliver positive outcomes for our citizens. Churches have exceptional local…

Five Major Types of Church Revitalization

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Every church is different. As such, every church revitalization project is different. Sometimes it’s more than just context though—it’s methods as well.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM MIKE

What would you advise a church of 30 adults to do in a denomination where outside revitalization help is not available? There is no way to pass off the property to another congregation. And no outside congregation close enough to help

Episode Highlights:

  • Relocation is not a silver bullet for church revitalization.
  • Usually in a merger revitalization, there is a dominant church, so it functions more like an acquisition.
  • Other churches in your area are your co-laborers, not your competition.

The five types of church revitalization are:

  1. Organic revitalization
  2. Relocation revitalization
  3. Leadershift revitalization
  4. Merger revitalization
  5. Acquisitional revitalization

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of existing churches while simultaneously increasing the birth rate of new churches. Frank Pomeroy, whose daughter was killed in the mass shooting at First Baptist Church on 5th November has told NBC he will continue to play Christmas music because: “She would want the holidays to proceed – it was her favourite time of the year.”

Frank Pomeroy’s daughter, Annabelle, was 14 years old and one of 26 people who were killed.

He was away on the day and was notified by text that there had been a shooting.

He had to return to identify his congregation members’ bodies and has recently finished presiding over funerals for each of them.

Christian charity warns Rohingya refugees may be unwilling to return

Catholic aid charity CAFOD said it is concerned about the possibility of the forcible return of the Rohingya unless their safety can be guaranteed.

Speaking during Premier’s News Hour, Chris Bain, director of CAFOD said: “Probably the Rohingya community – before they start to go back – would probably want to have some reassurances that when they do get back … to their lands and their villages … that there would be some hope of peace and harmony with the Buddhist population in the Rahim state as well.

“I would say it’s going to take quite a lot of reassurances and quite a lot of support and certainly the involvement of the UN community before people will move back.

“It’s a good sign because it is important but there are so many other conditions that need to be laid down first.”

More than 620,000 Rohingya have fled since violence escalated in August.

Amnesty International accused Myanmar of imposing apartheid on its Rohingya Muslim population.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis will meet the head of Myanmar’s army and Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, during his tour of the two countries next week.

World Vision

The trip is so delicate that Reuters reports some of the pontiff’s advisors have warned him against even saying the word “Rohingya,” to avoid igniting a diplomatic incident that could turn Myanmar’s military and government against minority Christians.

A Myanmar official has…
